Why Chicken Nugget Demand Is Flat

- If you’ve lived in the United States for the last 40 years, chances are high you’ve had a chicken nugget. They’ve long been a staple for families - Americans ate 2.3 billion servings of them in restaurants last year, according to The NPD Group.
But Americans’ favorite processed meat could be losing favor with consumers - data shows that chicken nuggets are appearing on menus less often, and demand in restaurants declined from 2017 to 2018, according to NPD. Nuggets are even seen less often on the kids’ menu, where they’ve long been a mainstay for busy parents, according to Datassential.
Consumer preferences might be changing for three reasons: health concerns, media attention and new competition.
Chicken nuggets aren’t seen as the most wholesome protein option. When CNBC did an informal poll in New York’s Times Square, no one knew exactly what is in a chicken nugget. The products have also been at the center of bad press, including a debunked “pink slime” photo allegedly showing what nuggets are made of, and recent recalls.
Nuggets are also considered a classic, which means that they’re not likely to benefit from any product innovation.
Customers also may be buying more chicken strips. They’re seen as a more wholesome, grown-up version of chicken nuggets and are available more widely on menus. Restaurants have realized that customers are willing to pay a bit more for them, which means they have a higher profit margin.
“I don’t really see how they’re going to make a comeback in the future because it’s not a product that most restaurants, especially in fast food, drive their innovation around,” said Dean Small, CEO of Synergy Restaurant Consultants. “Chicken nuggets are an incremental purchase, it’s like an add-on.”
Chicken nuggets have become an American staple, especially among kids. However, due to recent controversy around the bite-sized snack, demand for nuggets in restaurants and grocery stores is flatlining.

They're fat because they ate too much, not because of mcdonalds. Calories in, Calories out. Only fat people who blame anyone but themselves for being fat deserve to stay fat.
@@casperd2100 MCDonald's meals and other fast food meals, especially in the USA, are far more heavy in calories than other food, and that still plays a role. And I'm not sure if it's the case in the USA, since I'm French, but I know that here, MCD's sandwiches are small and don't fill you up at all. Please read Good Calories, Bad Calories.
i don't know why people are so squeamish. You can argue that it actually is more environmentally friendly to use the whole chicken, including the parts we typically just throw away, when companies make these nuggets. It allows for less waste of the chicken, leading to fewer chickens needed for consumption. And as long as there are no proven negative health effects from eating all edible parts of a chicken, then I don't see the problem...
They just said they're full of fat and clearly the smaller the size the worse it is for you. In no universe are random bits of animal and fat covered in bread crumbs and fried ever going to be good for anyone.
@@cupguin I should have been more clear on this, but when I'm referring to negative health effects, I'm not really referring to the fact that they're fatty. Many foods are fatty but don't get nearly the same scrutiny. Rather, nuggets seem to be attacked more through irrational chemophobic-like arguments, as if ground up chicken is somehow endowed with super-negative health effects, loaded with carcinogens and etc, beyond the fact that they're just fatty (which many "natural" foods are as well). Point being that there's nothing inherently immediately dangerous about nuggets beyond the standard fact that they are fatty, which no one is keeping secret. The arguments against them always just seem to boil down to "look at this slime they're made out of" for pure shock effect, rather than providing any concrete evidence on why it's actually bad.
@@robertprewitt7777 Was thinking the same thing, eating various parts of the animal vs just muscles is probably a good thing.

When timers go off, I would "waste" whatever is on the trays. I have never been in a workplace where friendship is more valued than getting the job done. So much time is wasted just by gossiping. I only saw a handful of hard workers, everybody and even some of the Managers just didn't care anymore.
Now I can't recall my experience with them before 20 years ago, but I will say that the McDonald's variety of nugget has a unique taste and texture profile, in fact it has the best tasting breading out of all fast food varieties when compared to Burger King Wendy's Sonic and even Chick-fil-A which will I will explain later.
Currently Wendy's has a grainy muhly breading with an uninspired meat filling, but their variety of sauces more than makes up for it post 2004.
Burger King had Supreme chicken tenders but have since discontinued them for the 10 for a dollar variety of nugget they have now which is less desirable than even current McDonald's nuggets especially since McDonald's variety nuggets come across as extremely dry and anemic.
Chick-fil-A has never been the same since they shifted from moist peanut oil to a vegetable oil frying method that loses moisture much quicker especially since they use real cuts of whole chicken with minimal breading and no moisture absorbing fillers.
I haven't had any of them in a while so I can't think of anything else
