Excellent explanations.
I enjoy playing 4AD but with the amount of material scattered across many books this is definitely a game in need of a Hitchhiker’s Guide to help navigate the options. Thanks for another great video !
It's true. I've been waiting for nearly two years for the supposed 2e core book, and Andrea hasn't given much in the way of an update.
Great video! Thank you so much for this. When I first got into Four Against Darkness and saw the wide variety of supplements available for it, I did a bit of research and grouped them into publications that would take my game in the direction I was interested in (party based, old school, fantasy, dungeon, town and outdoor adventures). Your recommendations are spot on and a great way to get started. I plan to make my way through most of the premade fantasy-focused adventures as well.
As a relatively new player of this series, I couldn't agree more with your choices. Excellent job! I have purchased a BUNCH of books with no regrets, but if I would've seen this video beforehand my focus would have been better. Thank you!
You’re welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Many thanks. This is the very question I've wanted answered.
Bring back the hook! Edit YES! 7:20 hook! :)
I love 4AD, but it aint half a difficult one to tackle due to the massive pile of supplements. I'd say Base game, 4 against the abyss, All the twisted books and wayfarers guide is a great starting place.
Really helpful video thankyou. I got in early on 4AD but haven't touched it for some time and had no idea that there had been so many new expansions!
This is a great video, I fully agree! 👍👏
Twisted Dungeons and Twisted Minions are both still two of the best expansions (like yourself I bought the pdfs all those moons ago) as you can set up basic themed adventures, good for players that don't want zombies popping out of one room directly next to a hoard of goblins that somehow have immunity to undead attacks.
Thanks for doing this one, I see 4AD everywhere on the solo roleplaying subreddit
2024 and no sign of any revision of the Core book, they continue to release new books and new similar games. To purchase physical copies from Amazon is $20-25 AUD and the pdf's have stayed round the same price. I would agree that the is kind of cheap, but as you get into it and play a few games, you can get caught and amass a fair bit. I just got the OSR Dragon-slayer because of this game, I loved the old school feel, but wanted a good physical Hard cover kind of left me wanting more. so to clarify this little game got be back to the gaming table playing. (M1 Barrowmaze 30% completed)
You make a super valued point about the books adding up. I have over 20 now… & I really does bother me that there is no 2e for the main rules
@@GeekGamers01reminds me of the classic traveler the small box and the 3 little black books, as a kid I could actually afford it, not sure how much I collected but it was a stack. I feel this follows in with that idea, every pay get a few ebooks. What I think was the best thing was it got me back into gaming.
Long time fan of your work. Hope to try d100 dungeons too. But I finally took the plunge and bought my first 4 books for 4AD. 4AD , Abyss, twisted minions and hoards. But where do you get these in print? I can only find pdfs.
Glad you enjoy my work and thanks for saying so. In terms of the books-not sure what country you are in but Amazon US has some and drviethrurpg has, at times, offered print options. You could try Lulu.com as well as the Ganesha Games website since sometimes he puts up a variety of links to print editions. GL and I hope you enjoy the game! You picked up a good set of 4 books.
Best advice... buy everything.
Hard to disagree! (& that’s basically what I’ve done it seems!)
wow you are amazing i was thinking on that ...ty
Theres also Four Against the Great Old Ones, which i think recently got a new supplement .
Yes I discuss that book in the video. I dislike it.
@GeekGamers01 ah, my apologies. I missed it. And I cannot seem to find it in the video. Which section is it in?
@@GeekGamers01 Actually, I think you cut that section. The only standalone games you mention are Four Against Mars and Four Against Fear.
It is not a section of the video… somewhere I mention that I don’t care for that game. I did not discuss it further than that.
Great overview, thank you!
I sometimes miss a story arc when playing 4AD. Which books would you recommend if I wanted to introduce a stronger narrative element into the game?
Great question and glad you enjoyed the video. There are some books that have built in stories… I’m not a fan of that style of play so not sure what to recommend but I believe at least one of The Lantern zines that go with this game includes some short stories that you can play out.
@@GeekGamers01 Thank you, have just looked it up (Lantern issue #1). Looks like it might be worth trying out, thanks for the suggestion!
Holy cats! I didn't know that there was that much available for the system.
And I don’t even have it all!
Great video - thanks! Would the Pixie book allow for play in the animal world - mice, etc?
I looked though the book and it's not an animal world. The emphasis is playing in Faery world. If you want to play something different than being in a dungeon, I would recommend Court of the Pixie King.
Great video - thanks. Would you please do the same for 40k?
Glad you enjoyed the vid but your request for 40K will have to be fulfilled by some other Tuber. I don’t know anything about it! :)
Are there any derelict spaceship crawlers out there that are in the same vain as Four Against Darkness
You might look at Derelict Delvers which I talk about in this video: ruclips.net/video/_Ia91xUy-sc/видео.htmlsi=zzAYOudWboyGcemx
A great little game that you can expand as much as you fancy, but its crying out for a second edition of the core book ... the current version is a real mess and could be a barrier for new players.
Completely agree!
