    Format:
    When Runesmith is talking normally and not playing a character it will be formatted as normal text.
    Ponnukio: “This is speech from Runesmith when he’s playing a character in a skit. The name of the character speaking will be before any speech.”
    [Ponnukio: These are actions from a character. The name of the character will be before the action.]
    ||This will be used to explain sets during skits.||
    (This will be comments from me.)
    You ever look at a weird segmented piece of wood full of words and think;
    Old Man: “If only I could read so I could hear the secrets you keep inside my own head.”?
    Well that’s stupid throw it away because today’s sponsor audible tells you words better from that sound that you put in your head. With a massive library of fantasy short stories, novels, educational pieces, and audible originals. You can listen all the time anywhere no matter what you’re doing. You get a free credit each month that you can slap onto a book and own it. No matter the price. Also regardless of the price you get a free audiobook when you sign up and I recommended The Silmarillion so you can learn about the elder days of middle earth. Narrated by the one and only Martin Shaw. That’s over 14 hours of free content that you get just by starting when you go to Audible.com/Runesmith or texting Runesmith to 500500. So go to this url right here with my name that I just said and enjoy inspiring fantasy. And also look at my stupid video.
    You know who your character is. But where did they come from? Well that’s an easy question to answer because they came from pages 127-143.
    ||Cuts to Logan/Runesmith staring at the camera with an awkward smile sitting down at his desk. The shot stays for a few moments before zooming in closer to his face and playing a short clip from a song that says “I hate myself.”||
    Really though the first thing you think about after you pick your class is who the heck you’re gonna be playing. And who a person is is defined entirely by what they’ve experienced and to what extent they choose to be affected by those experiences. Someone who spent two weeks out of 16 years watching anime can immediately choose to define themselves by the obsession and dedicate their life to one punch man. And someone who spends five years cultivating wealth can still feel empty and devoid of meaning. Relating more to an urchin than a king. There’s also that one guy who took a 7 hour acid trip ||Cut to Logan/Runesmith on the ground looking high AF|| and achieved buddhahood ||Cut to Logan/Runesmith out in the wilderness stoically standing with a bow strapped to his back and an arrow in his hand.|| and then spent 10 years as a hermit before being eaten by a crocodile.
    ||A menacing growling sound comes from behind Logan.||
    [High Hermit: Quickly turns around in fear and shock]
    But no one heard about him and he’s in the past. Just like your background. Let’s do this via the alphabet.
    The Acolyte; Someone who knows the ins and outs of all sacred rights, local gods, their elders wahzoo’s, and the will of the powers that be.
    ||Cut to a Holy Knight, background irrelevant.||
    Holy Knight: “This and butt stuff is like 90% of my job.”
    Acolytes are the incredibly powerless sidekicks to those who actually wield divine power like y’know clerics and warlocks. They aren’t that but they can be because-because you picked your class already so you probably did both. These guys can come from a wide range of faiths. From the divine and righteous servitude of Moradin to the fiendish fanaticism brought on by the guild master rakdos. Or the gutter sworn knights of box who worship a-a literal cardboard box.
    ||Cut to Holy Knight walking, stopping just before a sage with a large floppy wizard hat under a large stone bridge looking structure.||
    [Sage: Holds out his hand]
    Sage: “Hold there traveler. Tell me, what is a box?”
    [Holy Knight: Kneels down]
    Holy Knight: “A box is that which contains all that is, was, and shall be.”
    [Sage: Lifts up the front of his hat]
    Sage: “You have done well brother of the box. Proceed and witness the glory.”
    [Sage: Gestures to his left.]
    [Holy Knight walks to the Sage’s left sectioned off part under the bridge, unable to be seen from where he was.]
    Holy Knight: “It’s perfect, it’s more beautiful than anything I could have ever imagined. It’s a box.”
    ||Cut to a cardboard box surrounded with candles. (He’s right, it’s beautiful beyond comprehension. Logan please remove this section of the video, I had to make a wisdom save to not instantly go insane after seeing pure perfection. One could say I failed the save considering the fact that I’m typing this all out...)||
    Faith comes in all shapes and sizes. Having a god to worship is a real stress reliever. But all acolytes get an incredible boon. Help from the boys. As part of a buddy group your homies have your back whenever you visit a temple with shared faith or a shack with other people huddled around a box or an underground ritual ruin. They’re there for you and only you. Your stupid disgusting heretic party members can wait out in the rain while you sing chants in reverence of granny toe fungus. And all these traits that you gather from your time there can be summed up as tunnel vision, a holier than thou attitude, and a vast ignorance of all other types of life’s people lead. That’s actually very true I write that before and then I went back and checked the traits and stuff. Look, I’m uncomfortably right.
    The charlatan. The lovable bastard that everyone has bitter memories of. But there’s just something about him that keeps you coming back. This is also known as Stockholm Syndrome. Caused by a nice ass, a chiseled jawline, and a silky smooth voice.
    ||Cut to Logan in front of a blank wall.||
    Dumb Dumb Idiot Runesmith: (He says this in a voice that sounds like a Sesame Street character) “Hi!”
    If you’re a charlatan you are a literal ass. A big juicy dump truck that spouts out bullshit and gains everyone’s admiration and kisses. Each one peddles their own falsities that cause the ignorant to blindly hand them cash. Like a devil’s contract or a politician. Just rancid behavior. But they all have fanatics. Some good examples include Lando Calzone, Handsome Jack, Whole Horse, every political leader after a nations third birthday, the Wizard of Oz, and history and fiction is riddled with them. They all get the benefits and burdens a false identity. Similar to how you perceive me as the Runesmith or how George Miller created so many characters he lost track of himself. They also have favorite schemes. Cheating chance, embezzlement, life manipulation, rapid identity shifts, that fun cup game that you can play in alleyways, and telling people that that thing on the shelf is an ancient family heirloom that brings good luck and guidance. When the thing is actually just an elastic sticky hand that costs 1/8th of a cent to manufacture. As they say fool me once shame on you, fool me twice what the fuck that’s so mean what about my feelings y’know, fool me three times and come here you clever dick let me kiss that kiss that handsome mug with a healthy smidge and a homo.
    The Criminal. They have the skills that last guy lied about and use them for the same reason. Criminals work entirely for personal gain or the benefit of their faction. Regardless of what regulations are enforced or who gets hurt. They don’t apologize to the fall guy. But for good reason in their own mind. Every waking moment is a test of skill and perception to a criminal. And people who can’t keep up deserve to lose because of it.
    ||Cut to Unidentified Commoner Logan (UCL) playing a card game on a porch with a currently unseen person.||
    UCL: “Do you have any old maids?”
    ||Cut to a criminal Logan with an eyepatch||
    Criminal: “No. Go fish.”
    [UCL: Puts down his cards]
    Criminal: “I don’t think you understood me, I meant go swim with the fishes.”
    UCL: “That’s not how the game-“
    [Criminal: Whips out a totally legit gun that isn’t just finger guns and shoots UCL right in the head.]
    Criminal: “He should have known my last card was a volcarona. And he paid for his ignorance, as all men should.”
    I’d say about 80% of criminals have more honor than your dime-a-dozen lawmaker and each one is likely to have their own laws made by no one but themselves. There aren’t over the counter methods to committing crimes so each one needs a criminal contact. Be it a guild, a reliable bar tender with a keen ear, the boys once they get back in town, or Bentley and Core (Kore?) because I’m a PlayStation two kid.
    Core (Kore?) is the bad guy, I meant Torn (Torm? Don’t make fun of me I’ve never played the game he’s talking about. How the hell do I spell these?)
    Yeah I kinda realized which is worse there. I hope you enjoyed my cynical look at types of people. I want to do more of these so I’ll stretch these out a bit and it’s fun. Also if you didn’t know I have a solid chunk of new merchandise and a total of 16 homebrew subclasses on my patreon. Go look at it, I’ve been doing a lot of work maybe. Oh yeah dude Stibbles Codex is nearing the end of the editing process and we’re still on track to ship in November. So you can preorder that if you want. And also go take a big old donger you jib clocker this is my channel and I’ll post what I want and you can’t tell me what to do because I’m having fun making it. Get kill hauled by a kielbasa before I crack a cold one over your glabella. Okay for real now get lost I love you.

    I had a background for my tiefling rouge back in an old DnD campaign a while ago, and even made a small little quest out of it. Here's what I can summerize as best as I can.
    So my tiefling rogue was born and grew within a rich family that owned a large winery, one of the best vineyards in the country. Through his life he enjoyed the finer things but as time went on, life with nobles and living the rich life gotten boring very quickly. He got into thieving when he once visited one of many nobles via taking a priceless faberge egg, the noble had hundreds of them so they wouldn't notice if one went missing. The excitement of it all got to him and eventually it grew onto him, starting off with some minor pickpocketing during parties and street gatherings, to sneaking inside houses and taking whatever that interested him.
    He didn't care about the value or worth of the item, but more for the thrill and enjoyment and would sooner or later return the stolen items by placing them back somewhere in the owners household or shop as though they misplaced it. Eventually though his father would catch word of his exploits and one day he came up to him and gave my character a choice; either to stay only for the local authority to be called, or be given one night to say his goodbyes and leave. Obviously my character chose the latter.
    It wasn't until during the campaign me and my friends needed some funds and I hatched the idea for a heist of my own father's vineyard. We go in, steal enough gold and then some for our adventures, and head out. It was pretty difficult, almost died from traps and high security, but we made it out with a good sum of gold and to make it all the more sweeter we even managed to pin it all against a rival vineyard.

  • @Sandwich1414
    @Sandwich1414 4 года назад +9

    One thing I find odd about backgrounds is that they, in some cases, have this disconnect between the character's default starting level and the background's context.
    Your character could be a soldier in a war, a guild artisan, a folk hero, a gladiator, a knight, an urban bounty hunter, or a sage (whose description says "Your efforts have made you a master in your fields of study") but still only be Level 1. I guess these backgrounds are for higher level characters, and I guess for some backgrounds like the Sage or Acolyte, you're putting principles and ideas into hands-on practice in the field, but if you're a knight , an investigator, a mercenary VETERAN, or a gladiator, how exactly are you Level 1? How are you a knight but barely more powerful than a goblin or a common bandit?
    I suppose it depends on the age of your character, their race, their skill, your backstory to the character that frames that background in your own character's context , and what level your DM decides you start at, if any backgrounds are off limits to new character, and how your DM utilises your backgrounds during play (since Wizard's published adventures rarely utilise your backgrounds). But I think some of the default backgrounds have enough subtext or context in them to have this disconnect between the background and the fact that you're only Level 1; you can be a respected artisan, a member of the guard, a gladiator, a knight, an urban bounty hunter but in the greater game context of levels, you're just small change.
    It reminds me of when people make giant epic backstories for their characters and they're only Level 1 - if that's how you work and write characters, that's absolutely fine but I feel as players we're supposed to be creating that backstory together as a group, letting everyone build their character in a shared storytelling experience.

Sometimes, I see video from this group of people and choose to ignore it or delay watching it, and when I do that, I occasionally look at the poster and see your name/pic, and add it to my queue immediately.
    You have never posted an uninteresting video in all the time I've been watching.
