They stopped counting at 1.6 million people. First concert that allowed western music after the end of the Cold War. This concert is very significant in history.
Wow Life is NOW and forever SHALL Be. I never knew that about it being the first western music after the Cold War. Thank you sooooo much!!
Metallica was the opening act
Holy shit 1.6 million people? Incredible...

If I would let you guess this crowd size you would say 3 million...kid.
But it was ~175k Queen Knebworth
If I would let you guess the size of the crowd just from these images you would say 3 million people are there...you unexperienced kid

GO TO SCHOOL!!!
Typical band: We sold out Madison Square Garden!" Metallica:"That's adorable. We sold out Moscow."
🤯 HELL YEAH‼
The Moscow show was the monster of rock their a few other bands
Moscow 🇷🇺 russia that is
@@robs4382 ACDC
The helicopters tho!!😂
I was a 16yo boy in the soviet bloc at that time, it was a historic moment. There's no other drug like freedom.
I love watching reactions to this, and how most of the people reacting don't even understand the significance of what they're watching at the moment. :D
This video always brings tears to my eyes. These suppressed people being “allowed” to watch a concert, even under the watchful eyes; yet they are having the time of their lives.
Americans take so much for granted!
This was a rock festival & this was over 1.6 million Russians enjoying Rock music for the first time as this was either before or just after the fall of the Soviet Union. Even seeing the Russian guards joining in the crowd is priceless and Metallica wasn't even the headline act I believe AC/DC was & Pantera was also there rocking out. It's definitely a moment in history captured in video.
Yes, that was during the final summer of the collapsing Soviet Union, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain and German reunification in 1989/90, and yes, AC/DC was the headliner.
Pantera was actually the opening act.
Russian historical archives have registered 700,000 people attending this Moscow
concert. I'm quite sure this ist incorrect, but NOT 1 million people incorrect. FYI...The
largest concert event in history ist Rod Stewart who performed for a "known" counted
attendance of 3.5 million people at Copacabana Beach on New Year's Eve (1994).
The next "known" largest concert event ist the American Philharmonic who performed
for 800,000 people in New York City (1986)...If the information I found ist correct?
I have compared a photo of 1 million people to the images of the Moscow concert
und it appears the Russian's estimate of 700,000 people ist more accurate, und
possibly even much less people (600,000?), but we may never know for sure.
All I know ist that a photo of 1 million people looks almost 2 times larger than the
images of the Moscow concert. 1 million people ist a lot of people. :-)
I'm trying to find images showing all 3.5 million people at the Rod Stewart concert.
No matter, the Russia concert would have been quite awesome to witness, but I would
have attended to see AC/DC mostly, except I was only 9 years old in 1997. :-)
Auf Wiedersehen aus Wiesbaden :-)
1.6mil is a false, bloated audience number
500-600k was the more realistic audience attendance numbers
@@wesfroman4902 They are listed on Wikipedia as having played at this concert along with AC/DC, The Black Crowes and, of course, Metallica. I had to check, too, cuz I wasn't positive, either.
EDIT: I just read that the Russian heavy metal band, E.S.T., also played at this concert. The date was Sept. 28, 1991. I've only been listening to heavy metal for about a year now, although I'm 64 yo. I was raising kids when these really heavy metal bands began coming up. I missed a whole lot of wonderful music because I was busy with "Life", and also because I had a preconceived notion that this type of music just wasn't "good" -- in fact, it was considered "the devil's music" in my circle back then -- but I've been enjoying playin' catch-up the past year! Blessings to you, Wes....🌟💫💛
That what freedom looks like
I don’t always listen to Metallica, but when I do, so do my neighbors...
In post-Soviet Russia the whole city listens!
Exactly
Ain’t no other way
James Hetfield's voice at its peak
Harvester Of Sorrow is so badass from this one. Scenes of the Russian soldiers trippin out and adding to the chaos. They had never seen anything like it and were going a little off not knowing what to do.
Creeping Death is unreal on this show too
@@rediron44 creeping death was insane during this one
You nailed it directly on the head of the nail girl- it IS about a nightmare(s)- this LIVE version was a must- the official video shows you the actual nightmares- ❤️✌️
The exact number is an estimate and it was a free concert. The actual concert is a huge part of rock history.
I was at the UK leg of this Monsters of Rock tour, still got my ticket. At this show they stopped counting at 1.7 million and let everyone in, estimates for this point were over 3,5 million. Freedom is a strong drug. Oh yeah, now a proud Texan
As a Metallica fan hearing that opening music no matter where it’s used gives you chills
I still have my Metallica shirt from when that album came out... Gahh I'm getting old...
Right!
Birth school metallica death . Same here it's a bit holy now though lol
Loved The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly intro!
What an experience that must have been!
Please do "creeping death" by mettalica same concert. Best song of the show. You will love it.
Metallica was on is prime when James had the Lion King style
I thought he looked like the Lion from Wizard of Oz
"on is"
I miss the days when Rock Stars looked like extras from Sons Of Anarchy or 70’s porn stars.
1.6 million people at that show. Crazy! The people of the Soviet Union were so hungry for this music after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dismantling of communism as they knew it.
false
@@RoverWaters What's false? This is a well-known concert and the size of the crowd shows you just how the people felt about being able to see these groups after the fall of the iron curtain. You have a different story?
В советском союзе была любая музыка и фильмы иностранные , но на западе пропаганда, несла и несет вечно бред и наче на военный бюджет и демократию денег не дадут 🤣.
I knew you'd love this one ! Next Metallica - Sad But true , straight heavy and one their best .
There's more people in that concert than in Iceland 😂
They stopped counting at 1.6 million, so that makes it at LEAST 6 times the iceland population 😵😵
They stop counting after 1.6 million!!...and you should've let the video continue into there next performance 'Creeping Death'...but if it didn't let you, you should look it up and check it out!!
fairytale...
They sold 600,000. But said so many people showed, they just stopped counting.
Also they played ANTARCTICA. The documentary is called freeze am all.
Legend has it, some people are still trying to leave that concert.
😂😂
I want a time machine so I can go to that gig. Great atmosphere
The wall went down and the artists went in to perform an epic concert
One of my all time favourite bands!!! Was waiting for this...1.6 million showed up!!! please try until it sleeps...or unforgiven. No one I’ve seen has ever done until it sleeps. 🖖🏻🇨🇦🥰💥
your reaction to the amount of ppl that were there, is just like most reactors. i was 21 when that happened.
i ❤️ your halloween marathon i’ve seen them in 81, 94 & 01
3 shows 3 decades ...each very different
rolling stones song you must listen to is
Can’t You hear me knocking 🔥🔥🔥
you will❤️❤️❤️
They're were 1.6 million people there!!
That whole album is insane....one of my favorite is Wherever I May Roam
Love Metallica! Classic banger. Give Orion a listen -- it's an instrumental and they shred it.
This was one of the first "Western" gigs in the Eastern block after the fall of Communism. Incredible atmosphere, relief, hope, love, everything in this... Good vid Jayy
This was before the fall of communism
Great reaction....you go down that Metallica hole...you be listening for the rest of this year! Greatest heavy metal band in history...still kicking AZZ!
The ticket booths where you go to buy concert tickets for this performance, after 1.6 million tickets every single ticket booth ran out of paper to print out the tickets
This was a rare even in history because Russia at those times is not only Russia but The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. Ruled by a dictator at those time Mikhail Gorbachiv. This was their first concert and a short experience of the people of USSR of what freedom was before the collapse of USSR later that same year.
Imagine almost 2 million people joining together for one thing they all love...absolutley amazing
This concert was such a major event after the break up of the USSR , this was seriously huge deal
Funny seeing this crowd post covid metallic one of the greats
1.5 million ppl. Awesome reaction.
This is my favorite Metallica song. Since you are new to listening to them try Nothing Else Matters. It is a total change from this energy. You will love it also.
Their performance at the 20th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert in NY is a really a great performance of Enter Sandman. The sound and video quality is excellent.
This occurred around the time the Soviet Union and communist rule ended.
Baby GRRL! You don't EVEN KNOW!!! Badass live music, with 10k folks plus? Most AMAZING feeling EVER!!
Any live/concert versions of songs will go on longer than studio version.
Apart from all the times that they are the same or shorter...
can you imagine the support staff. 'ya boss, all set up for 1/2 mill ppl, their are gonna and hear a great show' then 3 times that amount crash the party. they didnt even set up large screen tv's for this. so am sure many didnt 'see' the band, but they sure heard them :)
Tina Turner "Proud Mary" live from Wembley Stadium is a great one.
The other night you were saying you wanted to hear "Proud Mary"; live version I went searching for one myself!!!!, came across the aforementioned "Wembley Stadium concert and watched the entire thing... Was so awesome!!!!!
Wish I was there, I'd be jamming with them in the crowd, seen as young cats,🎤👍😎🤘🥁🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥
For those not old enough to remember.... This was during the time of the Fall of the USSR/the Iron Curtain and the end of Communism....The Soviet Union was just "Russia" again. It was also the end of the "COLD WAR" and with it....the end of the very REAL threat of Nuclear War. 1.6 million people came from all over the WORLD, hence all the different countries flags waving in the crowd. This was a MOMENTOUS occasion where people from all over came to celebrate not only the music, but the Russian citizens new-found Freedom. It was 1st time they were able to enjoy, (openly and freely) "Western" music, esp. Rock music!!! Everyone, world-wide, was able to breath a collective sigh of relief.... Peace :)
something to remember the old ones and learning the young ones!
You really need to go to a concert first chance you get. They are crazy but amazing.
That animalistic persona of James Hetfield is the reason I am so mesmerized by him lolz
Samesies
This was filmed in 1991. The Berlin Wall had only come down recently at that time, and many Russian youth were getting their first experiences with live Western music.
There were approximately 1.3 million people.
i’ve ❤️ your halloween marathon
i’ve seen them live in 81. 94 & o1
you will ❤️ can’t you hear me knocking
it’s 🔥🔥🔥
In this concert was 1.6 milion people 🤘🤘🤘 CRAZY ... google it it's insane 🙃 good times ... ...
Whooo weeee! Get ready Jayy girl! Let’s get it! Push play😉. ❤️✌️
0:49 yup😂😂😂😂
The claim is that 1.6 million attended this concert!
I's a FACT Sir... This was the "Monsters Of Rock" concert. AC/DC opened the show. It was a MOMENTOUS occasion. This was the year of the "fall" of the "Soviet Union", the end of Communism, and the end of the "COLD WAR" and with it the end of the VERY real threat of NUCLEAR WAR. People came from all over the WORLD(notice all the diff countries flags waving in the crowd) to celebrate not just the music but the Russian citizens new found freedom... the world breathed a collective sigh of relief. Also, it was the first time the Russian people were allowed to enjoy(freely/openly) "Western" music esp., "ROCK" music.... Huge deal all the way around. Peace :)
@@michaelgilbert197 how you going to have the headlining act open the festival?
1.6 Million people....and this is only 3rd on the all time list of crowds at an open air concert. #1 is Rod Stewart at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a crowd of 3.5 Million in 1994. #2 was Jean Michel Jarre in 1997 also in Russia, like that Metallica show, with 3.5 Million.
Love you girl....listen to you almost every day
You ain't never seen a crowd like that well all I got to say is welcome to rock and roll
I was present at Metallica's show at Perkins Palace in Pasadena CA. August 1983.
This was during the fall of the Iron curtain & the end of USSR's communist regime over eastern Europe. Prior to this time, most of western music was outlawed. So for many of these people, it was their first time hearing this type of music other than what they could get on the black market or heard on underground radio. Metallica was part of this music festival called Monsters of Rock. Pantera & AC/DC were part of it also. It took place in September of that year at Tushino Airfield, a former site of Soviet military exercises. I got this concert on DVD for my husband for his last b-day... Another great song by Metallica (same concert) is "Creeping Death" - crazy high energy & Kirk's guitar skills are beyond human. Many other RUclipsrs have reacted to that one. It's a must see!
Some artist now days think they live like a Rock Star, no these guys are the true meaning of living like a Rock Star, and alot of other bands in the 80's and early 90's.
Interesting to note that all this time later VA Tech still uses this as their entry song for football
I really like your little smile and other expressions in this reaction. Especially the smile 3:08 to that guy who noticed that he was on the big screen. :)
OMG I just realized you finally did Metallica LOL I cannot wait to see the reaction I haven't watched it yet.
Creeping Death same concert 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Another of the greatest performances is the Freddie Mercury tribute. They kicked all the ass in the stadium...and GNR didn't clown lol.
This concert was just after the end of the Cold War. In Moscow, this was the first time people could play, or listen to, metal music in public without being arrested and executed for it. Metal was a serious underground thing, not because it wasn't popular, but because it wasn't legal under the USSR. So when Metallica announced they were doing a concert, EVERYONE came to see what they had been missing.
Most people forget or don't realize.... pantera was there too. 2 of the biggest bands ever. 1 place. I would've gave both my right eye to be there
Those 👀! I love it!!
New subcriber here!!.....Love the way you get into the music.......God Bless
Happy to have you
You NEED to hear the smooth jazz version. Just search Enter the Sandman smooth jazz. Trust me, you will be GIGGLING.
Enter sandman is a phrase that's been around since the 50s. The sandman would come put his sand into your eyes and make you fall asleep. That's why you wake up with crust in your eyes. This song treats the same man as if he's a nightmare character. This concert supposedly had over 1 million people at it in Moscow. I've seen Metallica about four times when I was younger. Not nearly as many people but they did sell out every place that I saw them play.
you nailed it --- it's just a song about childhood nightmares.
the original video for 'enter sandman' is a collage of typical bad dreams that kids have: falling, snakes, etc.
Domination by Pantera from the same show in Moscow. You'll be amazed by the guitar
Absolutely beautiful ❤️
Imagine playing n looking out at THAT MANY PPL YO 🙏
The crowd was so Loud that we heard them in stockholm🤣
I saw Metallica live one the Enter Sandman Tour in Seattle. It was intense!
This is where you could safely use the term "a sea of humanity"
in the song, he talks of putting his son to bed, during the spoken part, thats his actual son saying the prayer
this is the Metallica fan base, they continue to sell out every show still 40 yrs later, the legends. I loved your enthusiasom of the crowds and how hard they played, I have seen Metallica all over the world in 40 yrs of following them, they play this hard at every show, if you have never been to their show you need to experience it 1 time in your life...........nothing like it ever
That is James hetfield ,Jason newstead ,kirk hemmit ,and lars Ulrich the drummer
One point six MILLION!! The helicopters were there to provide a little ventilation!
Over 1.5 MILLION people there, Jayy
Who are you??? Lol I'm so glad that I came across you. It makes me so happy watching your appreciation.
this gig is rocking
Nothing Else Matters with the San Francisco Sympathy Orchestra is my all time fav Metallica song & that's gunna be my funeral song lol, love from Straya mate ❤❤❤
You got to go to a rock festival one time. Last one I went to was 3 days with over 125,000 ppl each day. Madness
Yes girl, go for it, ya'll cute.

🎸💯🤯 Metallica Rules‼🔥
"Nothing Else Matters" next⁉️
The low flying choppers were to provide some air circulation for that amazing crowd‼
Fiddlesticking? Hey, anybody up for fiddlesticking?

Watch creeping death from same show..dope performance n you see the military up close n a dope solo 💯💯💯
There was 1.6 million people there, They say in a documentary about this concert this concert helped bring down Russia and defeat communism
1.6 million people.
