Using Volca Sample with Keystep Pro is possible!

  • I'm so happy. I was able to solve a big issue that I solved with the Keystep Pro and finally I can jam the way I want.
But let's start at the beginning.
I've always wanted the ARTURIA Beatstep Pro, but somehow I couldn't bring myself to do it. Ultimately, it would only have been about the Volca Sample and the investment was too high for me. I was all the more happy about the gift from ARTURIA, the Keystep Pro. But what was my disappointment when I found out that the drum session does NOT work like the Beatstep Pro, but only uses one MIDI channel.
Now one or the other says: What the heck, the Volca Sample 2 can do it. It's correct. But there may be musicians who don't want to buy a new Volca sample just because of that. And I now have the solution for that: MIDI routing.
There are various ways to route MIDI signals, I used the MIDIHUB here because it's the easiest way.
All incoming signals come from the DRUM track on MIDI channel 10 and are then routed from MIDI 1 to MIDI 10 and from C4 to A4. This makes it possible to use the original volca sample at the keystep as well.
The file for the MIDIHUB can be found here:

Most of the Time I am using the Specular Reverb v3 for my jams.
Sometimes the NTS-1 with the Cathedral Preset or just the iPad.

It is nice to see your hands getting more space on the bigger keyboard, while you also keep the control over the sounds by twisting the Volca knobs. I am happy you solved the issue.

Was about to comment, then I read the description. Indeed, the Sample 1 doesn't support Single-Channel MIDI Mode, which makes the decision between the Sample 1 and 2 pretty hard: Sample 1 has Pajen firmware and Vosyr, Sample 2 has Single-Channel MIDI, twice as much sample memory, and samples can be loaded through USB (if the damn software works, which it doesn't half of the time). MIDI Routers are useful for other things as well (e.g., if you have different drum machines that want different notes for their pads and you want to use a single controller - I have a Volca Beats and Alesis SR-16 and the Toms are triggered differently), never a bad idea to pick one up :)

The KeyStep Pro is a very powerful tool fo sequencing external gear. Heck, I even purchased the 37 only because of the strum feature and I use it more than the Pro. Thank you for the wonderful video.

loved what you achieved! When I clicked on the link and downloaded and tried to open its asking me for a app to use, I don't have one that works, what did you use? Sorry if this is crazy simple, I'm a brand noob and just getting my feet wet:D
or if my question isn't even formulated cohesivly, can you point me in the right direction? Topics, websites etc an I can do the research of course. Just having the hardest time in the world getting an idea on where to start.

I love how you try to fix things easy. That is you great and you have my full respect. So I suggest that you don't have the midihub by blokas ... Then the only way for you is to change the firmware to the unofficial by pajen (Google it). But be careful. Read the description. Watch some videos about it.

How? Got my volca drum going thanks to your video. But would rather use my sample. Also managed to get my nubass working in track 2 once! can't make it happen again and can't find any help anywhere on how to setup the 2nd synth!

    • @Volcaniced
      @Volcaniced  2 года назад

to change the outgoing channel press and hold the Track Button (Track 1- 4) and change the Channel with the knob on the right side of the Display. To use the sample with wiht the Keystep you rather need the "Midihub" by Blokas or you going to install the unsupported Firmware by Pajen (just google it). But you are doing tis on your own risk.

How is it on Beatstep Pro?
Does motion sequencing work on the KSP knobs? I have a vague recollection of a subreddit on motion only working on the BSP/KSP knob assignments with the KVS2 in 10 midi channel mode...

Hey everyone ..salutations. I'm fairly new in the world midi and especially drum mapping. I have a keystepnpro and the older sampler. I just got it ! Don't know if it has all these cool firmware updates that seem to be the bees knees yet. But I'd like some of u to explain it to me as aunly as possible. What do I need to make these two things work together? Help me! Lol I just need some one o write down the steps one by one.
    Thanks hopefully in advance.

      Two possibilities:
      1. You own the Blokas MIDIUB then you can use it to map notes and make the Volca Sample work on the Keystep Pro. (MIDIHUB is around 150 EUR +). Then you can use my Patch for Volca Sample + Keystep you can find here: patchstorage.com/keystep-pro-2-volca-sample-2/
      2. You get the firmware from Pajen, which is a custom firmware that is loaded onto the Volca Sample via the audio cable. However, this will void the warranty and no one can take responsibility if something goes wrong. You can find the Pajen firmware here: ranzee.com/volca-sample-unofficial-firmware/
