Keep in mind Blade Runner is the same universe as Star Gate, and Kurt Russles movie Soldier. Off world conflict is a must here. Same world as Escape From New York and Escape from L.A. . All set in the same franchise world. Along with the Alien/Predator movies all in the same world.

That's the realisation K comes to at the end, Wallace and the replicant freedom movement are the manufactured lies, Deckard and his daughter must find their own way, because without their love for each other they might as well not exist at all.

The reason that the music sounds similar is that composer Hans Zimmer deliberately sought out a (by this time increasingly rare and very expensive) Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer (also known to musicians, roadies, and service technicians worldwide as "the hernia in a box" due to its ludicrous weight of just over 200 lbs), which Vangelis used extensively in the original soundtrack.
Also, although re-recorded by Zimmer for BR2049, the Tears in Rain cue from the original film was used for K's death scene, as Zimmer thought that he could not improve upon the composition.

My much older/more experienced guitar player (36) talked me out of it. "Every time you move it and turn it on, you have a different synth." So glad I listened to him.

"Blade runner" is actually a holdover from the original film script. A blade runner was going to be someone who ran black market medical supplies like scalpels or blades. In fact 'Bladerunner' was a novel by Alan Nourse that got licensed by the studio at about the time Ridley Scott was in pre-production on 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep' by Philip K. Dick. Someone in the marketing department decided the title was a more mysterious and marketable one than the Dick novel. So they did a switcheroo. They may have asked David Peoples and Hampton Francher to fold some of the plot details (about the black market drugs) in to the screenplay for the finished film, but that never happened.

Yeah. Usually sequels that aren't part of the original source material (as opposed to Lord of the Rings) are dismal compared to the originals. If it's sci-fi or action, it is usually just a no-heart, formula-driven vehicle for a movie that's louder with more explosions than the original, which is what the studios want. So, the "Fast and Furious" franchise, the John Wick films, Hangover (different genre, but same idea, grosser and more obnoxious for it's own sake)..... not a sequel in any of those that adds anything of value beyond the original.

There is a little known novel called The Blade Runner, it's a science fiction novel about a future where people who cannot pay debts have their organs harvested and the harvesters are known as Blade Runners as they are a cross between a bounty hunter and a surgeon. While the 1982 movie was in pre-production and still didn't have a title one of the producers mentioned the book to Ridley Scott and he loved the name so much he asked the studio to buy the rights just so he could use the name for his film.
The 2010 movie Repo Men with Jude Law and Forest Whittaker was partly inspired by the book.

  • @DonGeritch
    @DonGeritch 3 года назад +16

The title Blade Runner was in one of Hampton Fancher's screenplay drafts, that he removed after some rewrites. However, Ridley Scott came across it and loved it, and when he asked why did Hampton edit it out, he admitted that he stole it from a book called weirdly enough Blade Runner: A Movie, by William Burroughs. And so they just had to get Burroughs' permission to use it because it's a banger title, and so they did.
As to the meaning behind it - here's my interpretation:
The line between a "real" human and a replicant is as thin as an edge of the blade. And so Blade Runners are those who tasked to walk this line and keep it sharp, to not let it get blurred (which, evidently, doesn't quite work out).

Some things about this movie that I love:
    1. It is subtly implied that Wallace did not named Luv, but it is just a manerism of him, to call people "Luv".
    2. The only thing that Wallace Corp. had of Rachel image was her eyes... and they did it wrong. LOL
    3. The movie make us be invested in Joi and K romance, but all this time Joi was just a product telling a customer what he wanted to hear to keep him satisfied.
    4. Villeneuve played with the "Replicant Deckard" concept, but chose to leave the question opened.
    5. The movie is basically a gradual peeling of layers of deceptive appearances. Cells within cells, interlinked.

I truly enjoy this film _so_ much more than the original, which I know is controversial, but Villeneuve truly doesn't miss. A lot of it comes down to the protagonists and their relationship with the plot. Deckard has no personal stakes in his mission, and his role as Blade Runner is more beat cop than detective in terms of how he helps the plot unfold; which is to say, I don't think he does much. Roy Batty is far and the way the unsung protagonist, despite being positioned as antagonist.
K, by contrast, propels _everything,_ and the primary mystery is directly connected to him. His stakes are existential, and his drive to affirm a memory that is not his own adds a lot of weight to his journey. I get a real sense of K's emotional journey throughout the film, whereas intrigue with Deckard comes tacked on in the Final Cut with the unicorn origami to suggest that he's a replicant.
I think this may be one of the most meaningful sequels I've ever seen, to the point where I feel it elevates the original and furthers its themes in such rich ways.

The climactic Sea Wall scene was the most sonically gratifying sequence I’ve ever experienced in a theater in recent memory. This is how you do a sequel for a movie that is 35+ years old.

I think Luv had some feelings for K. We can see it in that scene where he goes to the Tyrrell headquarters and she show him that spherical memory device. She tries very subtly to create a connection with him, but when he also very subtly deny her approach, she goes back to her disciplined manners. Replicants seem to desperately try to feel and live human emotions, although in concealed way (this is an aspect I love in this story).

"why did he stab her?" She was a new model. His whole monologue was talking about his quest to make replicants who could reproduce. She, the new model, was another failed prototype, in his robotic drone eyes. That's why they were so eager to find the child, so they could examine her/him to try and solve that puzzle. It was another way Rachel was unique.

I'm surprised nobody's talking about whether Deckard is a replicant, since it seems like THE Blade Runner topic. Natalie doesn't bring it up in either video and I don't think she's even thought of the possibility. Toward the end Natalie says Deckard's child is half human.

The first Blade Runner film subtly implies that Deckard could be a replicant (his eyes are reflective, like Rachel's and the artificial owl's were. Also, Gaff left the origami unicorn at Deckard's apartment, suggesting that he knew that Deckard had dreams/reveries of a unicorn in the forest, which he'd only know about if Deckard told him (he didn't) or they if were implanted memories (which were an experiment to make replicants more peaceful) and therefore listed on a profile of Deckard that Gaff had probably read, etc.)
Anyway, that's a super-roundabout way to point out that if Rachel and Deckard were replicants, then their child would be a person conceived and born without any human parentage. So, maybe the movie is asking whether or not Ana is human. And maybe what it even means to be human, at all.
Then again, Blade Runner 2049 never tries to endorse or refute if Deckard is a replicant. But still, the film challenges you to consider the implications it brings up, and because of that, it sticks with you.
