I’ve heard that the mattresses pair really well with the IKEA mattress toppers. I’ve read reviews from ikea that the foam mattresses alone are just ok but with the toppers are a massive improvement!
I have that bed in my office. 5 full-sized bed pillows along the back and sides, and then 6 throw pillows in front of them. My guests have a choice of how firm a pillow they want to use, which they all seem to love. I bought one of the more expensive mattresses, and everyone comments that it's an amazingly comfortable mattress, though I haven't ever slept in it as a bed (fell asleep on it as a couch a couple of times, and hadn't meant to). I use the drawers for my linen storage. Overall, I love it and think it's one of the best IKEA purchases I've ever made. Pricey, but WORTH it!
Looking for this or something similar in my office too. Currently it doubles as a guest bedroom along side my office (work, play, and music recording) and it’s a pretty small room where we have a queen bed in there. Definitely gets kinda tight. Also when on zoom meetings it feels somewhat unprofessional just having a bed in the background. Having it set up as a sofa and having the extra room seems amazing. But now arguing with the gf on what style/color we get 😂
the ikea polyurethane mattresses are ranked #1 by consumers associations in Germany and Switzerland. mine, Even after 8 years, still in pristine shape.
@@bstr-ey6wl as my previous comment states I was looking into this daybed, and I ended up getting it along with the firm meistervik mattresses. I don’t mind them one bit, I haven’t slept on them yet but a love it for laying down for a few minutes and sometimes even a bit longer. I’ve had guests complain about it but these are very firm mattresses, these definitely aren’t for those with a preference of softer mattresses. I can probably add a think memory foam topper to get a happy medium between firm and soft, but otherwise I do like it and serves a good purpose as a larger bed when company is staying over and while looking better, taking up less room, and being functional for normal uses otherwise.
My HEMNES bed was 10yrs old when I sold it and Guess what? I bought back the same HEMNES design haha. Really loved the Daybed so I wanted to make sure I have a new one that can last me many years again. But there’s a huge difference in size with the new one now. It’s now 10cm shorter at the width and longer at the length. I think it’s to help accommodate the taller people situation like what Tina pointed out. I got 2 spring mattresses so I don’t have any back problems sleeping in it for that many years (got new spring mattresses later on when I realised the old mattresses don’t fit the new bedframe anymore) but the only drawback was that the stacked mattresses got pretty high... I have to kinda climb onto the bed lol. Of course when family or friends came for a sleepover the stacked mattresses became a normal height pulled out.
Rose Waters how do you usually sleep with it? I keep mine pulled out cause I have a baby and she doesn’t sleep overnight in her crib. So I have had it pulled out for a year. I have the newer foam it’s 150 but one mattress got so flat I’m feeling the wood and it’s pissing me off. I was thinking to change the bed to the other hemnes one with drawer it’s a regular queen but I do love this day Bed.
A D hi, I mostly slept with mine closed unless if there’re friends or family over. Perhaps mostly having the mattresses stacked up help prolong the mattress life? But it may also be because I went for the more expensive range with springs in it so it’ll never go flat to the wood. The one that IKEA recommends for the Daybed is simply a foam mattress so definitely not for prolonged use. (Edit) Change the mattress and keep the Daybed! 😁
Rose Waters hey. I have a foam it was 150. Cheaper than the spring in Canada. I’ll end up getting the two springs. It’s 1cm higher than the foam I have. How is it stacked ? Is it super high? But comfortable ? Or it’s hard? I will probably keep mine open just cause baby sleeps with me. And this is a king size bed? Cause queen doesn’t fit. Queen sheets that is.
Jorreca Hi Jorreca, in my opinion spring mattresses are always better as they last longer giving firmer support. However this also depends on which version Hemnes daybed you’ve gotten. IKEA’s current version doesn’t fit a regular single anymore so the only choice available in 80x200cm now would be foam. Hope this helps!
When I first bought this daybed, about 8 years ago, I thought that the mattresses were very comfortable. I'm only 5 feet tall, so I only bother pulling it out when a friend stays over, which means I normally use both mattresses on top of each other. When they started sagging, my back really hurt. I found that moving them frequently helped. They will go back to their original shape, if you don't keep sleeping/sitting on the same area all the time. (Unless the design has changed since 2015) I think it's sitting that does it, tbh. Also, you can machine wash the mattress covers to freshen them. When I moved to a new flat, I did the same as Tina and got the removers to take the daybed apart and put it together again. This is the only piece of furniture I've not been able to put together myself. And it's definitely a two person job, at least! As my new studio flat is much bigger, i was able to get my IKEA double bed out of my parents' garage, so the daybed is mostly used as a settee now. I use it all the time because I need to have my legs raised and supported. I have big cushions that I find better for my back than sitting on a chair, so my experience is different from Tina's here. But I do wish that it didn't have the lip at the top of the backrest, as it would make it easier to get comfortable! I would recommend this daybed, as mine has lasted well, but I think that the metal ones could be easier and lighter, which could be a consideration, especially if you think that you might need to move a few times.
My wife and I bought this as our main bed. We have it stretched out and it provides plenty of room. We started out with just two mattresses, and that was OK, but after about 9 months or so we bought two more mattresses. It is very comfortable, was not very expensive, stretched over time, and we love it. The one drawback is having no fitted sheet for the mattresses. Overall the comfort of the bed overcomes that minor flaw.
I’ve also had the hemnes for a while too, about a year. Honestly a great bed. As you said, it’s very versatile and I’ve gotta admit having a king sized bed to myself is pretty awesome. The drawers go back far and are HUGE, you can store blankets pillows and clothes or really whatever. Not many problems for me, but I also used the cheapest IKEA mattress that would fit with this lol and I’ve had no problems. I can pretty much sleep on anything anyways. I’d say that this is perfect for me. However the assembly and disassembly was probably the only somewhat bad thing about this. I’d say to not attempt doing it unless you’ve assembled a lot of IKEA stuff. My dad is a mechanic with a whole lot of tools and had already built two beds, a desk, and several chairs and even this was quite difficult for him. Assembly took about two days for him, but probably would’ve been shorter with someone helping lol I’ll help him next time since we’re moving soon. A big factor as to why this piece is so hard to assemble is the size of it. Regardless if you will use the pull out feature or not you still have to build it I believe. The frame pieces are huge too. It doesn’t take that long to disassemble though. BUT! Depending if you’re using this extended or not sometimes it can be very difficult to pull out the trundle thing on carpet and since it is also very heavy I’d suggest you put some kind of flat surface on the bottom but definitely not carpet where you’re rolling it out. This bed is great for bedrooms, guest rooms, and living rooms:
Kayla Sharayne no, I use separate twin sheets, and it works just fine. However, king sized sheets would work if you plan on permanently leaving it in its extended size! In fact I think king sheets would be slightly larger than the mattresses when left next to each other :)
A great review. My friends have this in their apartment. 3 of us can easily sit comfortably while watching tele, or playing on our laptops etc. They’ve not mentioned the issue with the mattress, but they’ve only had it since about middle of last year. It fits in extremely well with your studio apartment Tina.
We have this daybed in our guestroom/office. It is usually in the king size configuration. To make it more comfortable, we use a king size mattress topper. Assembly was complicated and took my husband 2 days. Our wall to wall carpet makes it difficult to open/close. I would buy it again.
This is by far one of the most helpful well made videos I have ever come across RUclips or otherwise. I am interested in getting this daybed for the living space look yet functional sleeping space and you answered all my questions. Thank you. You are awesome!
I assembled this by myself with a bad back and it took 8 1/2 hours (and then a few days to recover lol). Overall I LOVE this bed & it's versatility, though I do agree about the mattresses. I flip and change mine out regularly to help with the sagging issue (and I'm a 5'2" plus size gal).
Hi Eva can I ask , have you used other mattresses , say one with heavier weights than Ikea's Asvang(the one comes with this bed)? As long as the size fits, is it okay to replace with our own mattress?
Hey! Great Video I’ve never seen a video from you, but I enjoyed watching this one. So I’m from Germany, so it might be a little bit different (and I’m sorry for my English 😅). I got this bed when I was around 7 years old. My old bed was too little for me so I got this one. I‘m 14 years old now and I’ll turn 15 in 3 months. So my bed is pretty old now. For me, it works perfect. I once thought about getting a new bed, but since I’m into a sustainable and minimalistic lifestyle, I never thought about it again. This bed is great and I never found a bed, that’s this practical for me. I love that I can turn it into a big bed, if I want or need to and the storage is really practical. I have the mattresses, which you can get with the bed and for me, they worked good so far, because you can also wash the covering, so it won’t get smelly or disgusting. Sure, when I got the bed, I wasn’t really heavy, I was just a child but I mean, as a child you jump around and dance and do whatever in beds, so I wasn’t super careful 😂. One thing, which I am really sad about is, that the frame (idk if you can call it like this) got wet. It rained and the window was open. The bed is made out of wood, so it’s not in the best condition anymore but it still works good. All right, this comment shouldn’t get too long so that’s it from me. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I don’t know how you do it. I change my bed linens between 2 to 3 times a week. I just know if I tried to flip my mattress that often my arms would turn to dust.
I've been looking for a bed that takes up less space for quite a while now and just fell in love with this one. I've been doing research and I agree that the mattress is going to be an issue. I guess the only sensible way of going about this is changing it every 3 years or so. You said you've had yours for about 4 years, well now they have a way thinner one split in two, that you can zip together but this is my main concern for sure. 4 years is awesome though!!! I bought this random mattress off amazon and it got flat in a little bit over a year. Thanks for the video Tina, take care now!
I bought the 6 inch Lucid mattress for this bed which has been great for the last 6 years or so and very comfortable. It is slightly smaller than a regular twin though. I've moved and taken the bed apart 3 times and put it back together which hasn't been too hard, but takes less time after the first time bc you can keep some of the pieces attached to the larger parts. I recommend holding onto the manual even though they have it online. It's handy to have the hard copy when moving.
I've had this bed for the last 4/5 years :) i like it a lot, it's cosy, good to lounge around in and the amount of storage is great. but you're right about the foam mattresses not being great for your back, and when i pull it out for sleepovers i find a single mattress is too thin you can feel the wood planks beneath lol. im moving soon and will be buying a new bed and higher quality mattress (i actually got an ad for that mattress while watching this video lol) instead of bringing it with me, thanks for everything hemnes...
Thank you for taking the time to do this review! I’m thinking about getting it for my daughter’s room that can also be good for sleepovers or if we have company in. This helped me a lot!
I have watched this video and the new one where you have transformed the apartment. WOW oh WOW you did a fabulous decorating job. What is it that you do for a living? Where is this fabulous apartment? I love your channel.
This was very well done! I’m think about buying this bed for our family of 4, soon to be 5. We live in a condo, 3bd, with no built-in closets, no dryer (we live in Asia so that’s common here) so need one room designated for clothes & dry rack, therefore, space is tight. I love the look and versatility. Thanks Tina!
I love my hemnes bed, have had it about 5-6 years now; it’s in my guest room, it’s used for watching tv and occasional overnight - I have the two foam mattresses that I flip, rotate and switch top and bottom regularly so no issues
Maureen Campbell I bought this bed for my parents who are coming from overseas for 1 month, do you think that when the bed is open double, those mattresses will make them uncomfortable, at least when it is close, it has two mattresses to support the back but I’m not sure when it is just one mattress
@@heidykatheryn8279 I'm worried about this myself. The bed will rarely be used... Only a couple of nights a year when my Mum comes to visit. She can sleep on it as a single or double, but the main reason we want this bed, is for if our neighbours are being noisy as we work early mornings. This bed will be in our attic room where it's much quieter, but my partner and I, both in our 30's are wondering if it'd be comfortable enough to sleep on when extended for both of us. We used to share a single bed when we first moved in together, but that was on a divan style bed. How have you been finding it so far? x
@@VenomousCatastrophe it’s been surprisingly very good. My parents are a little bit fussy with mattresses and they slept there for 2 months very comfortably. Sometimes I have naps there and it’s very comfy :)
@@heidykatheryn8279 That's great news! Thanks for getting back to me. This is looking like our winner. :-D We'll go and see it in person before buying, but it was the longevity we were mostly concerned about. Thanks again. x

I love this bed, it's cute for my tiny bedroom, the drawers are much needed in my space, but the big thing I don't like about it - it's HEAVY and practically stuck in whatever place you initially put it. Mine is on a carpet, and I cannot even move it out a couple inches to clean behind it. There's a thick caking of dust and dirt behind it that I cannot reach. I would also need to have someone take it apart and put it back together when I move, because I don't want to give it up for now.
It took me 4 hours, by myself, to assembly the bed enough to sleep in it, and another 2 to finish it. I agree, it would be worth paying for assembly. I purchased mine without the mattresses since I already have a couple of twin futons I could put on it. Although they aren’t very comfortable even with tatami underneath. I was considering getting the mats they usually come with but now I’ll reconsider. I appreciate your review
Very good review. I was reluctant to buy it, considering other options, but this daybed looks great, perhaps thanks to your review. One word of advice, though : flip your mattress every three months or, even better, each time you change your sheets. Flip it all the way round and upside down. It’s all the more necessary as the ones you own have poor reviews.
I’m around 5’10 (177cm) and I really really want this bed. I got kinda sad when you told be that you found yourself kicking the wood panel sometimes and that made me very disappointed :(. When I looked at this bed at their website it said that the bed was 202cm long. My mother was concerned that the exact same thing that happened to you was gonna happen to be since I’m so tall and it’s not fun to not fit in your bed (so we got happy when it said that the bed was 202cm long). I seriously love this bed tho and I can’t see me buying another.
Can you give me the dimensions for when both beds are out? I have a very tight space and am trying to measure how far out the bed would go if I tried to extend it.
I just got it !! And I already had the mattresses from a previous double bed that I had so it wasn’t that expensive! This is a very good bed for small rooms .

Sleeping on stack of matresses could cause back pain for me personally. I changed the matresses into the good firm one and sleep only on one matresse. And the other matresse I just put it between wall and bed with special cover to protect it. And since then, no more back pain.
Great and helpful video, Tina! Great timing! Helped me decide that this really isn't for me as aesthetically tempting it is. I'm already suffering with a mattress that gives me back pain or really uncomfy. How's your back pain? Hope it's better.
i have a "regular" mattress on my sons bed and it sleeps well. Like Tina mentioned, there is a two inch difference in the standard mattress and IKEA's, however, that is easily masked by tucking the comforter underneath the mattress for a neater look, if that makes any sense. I've slept on my sons bed to see how well it slept with the standard mattress and i could have honestly stayed in it! Very cozy and comfortable. BTW, I am not what you'd consider a spring chicken either-hope this helps.
It looks like her problems with the mattresses have more to do with a lack of regular rotating and flipping than an actual quality issue. Other commenters have pointed this out, so I hope she looks into that.
I just bought this and I’m excited! I got the thinner mattresses from IKEA b/c I still have my tempeurpedic mattress pad for my double bed in college and I’m going to put that on top when people sleep on it
Hi Tina, I've been contemplating a daybed for my living room to serve as a couch, bed for guests, and bed for myself when I want to nap in the living room. I really like the Hemnes, especially with the trundle. However, I currently rent, which means I'll eventually move out. In that regard, the Brimnes looks like it would be a lot easier to take apart to eventually move. Do you think the Hemnes would be a challenge to deal with during a move? Thanks!
Just bought a used one, I am so thrilled, and really enjoyed your video. And for the info about the mattresses - it came with one, so I'll buy a higher quality one for the second! Thank you!
Thank you! I am getting this bed soon when I re do my room🥰 i will most likely use a normal mattress (single) as I have another spare one for when guests come over,(doubt it will work but worth a try) I really love the look of it on how aesthetically pleasing it is!!
Nice review, am planning to buy a Hemnes day bed including two husvika firm mattresses. Your review helped with the tiny details that are really important, Thanks!
I have this bed but in the raw wood version. I really wanted the white version but it didn't go well with my room. I just wish it had the full frame around instead of just planks. As for the assembly, I think we must've done something wrong because it is really hard to slide back and make it a single bed again, so we keep it as a double for most of the time. It is kinda squeaky after about a year which again might be my fault. And as for the mattresses, we bought different ones than they have on display with this bed, even more firm ones and they are fine so far. Great video!
I"m tempted to do this, but dragging a giant twin matress and storing it when not in use sounds like a pain, but then again I only would need to do that for a sleepover i assume?
I appreciate this video. A while ago, was at Ikea and I fell in love with the bunk-style elevated bed with a sofa underneath. I live in a small single room/basement in San Francisco, so space isn’t that plentiful, I sought to maximize my space as much as possible but also to be able to enjoy it like a nice room/home as well. However, after four years of using the bed. I’ve come to dread the west and tear and constant dealing of the metal frame. Not to mention that I had to shave a feet off of the actual bed itself in order to be able to fit in my room. I then sought out to purchase a daybed frame to replace both the bed frame itself and the sofa I inherited from a friend. And plus to eliminate the need to bust out the air mattress every time I have a sleepover. What I was concerned about the daybeds was the rumors I’ve heard. And yes you did cover that in your video where you mentioned that the Hemnes isn’t ideal for someone over 5’6”, I appreciate that because I’m 5’ 10” and would probably have to use the extended form 75% of the time.
Hi Tina! I just purchased this bed after watching your video and I absolutely adore it. The only issue is that I noticed it squeaks more than I would like. Do you have this problem and if you do, do you know how to make it squeak less? Thank you!
Excellent! Really enjoying your informative videos! Question: Do you have a "Day in the life of Tina" video? Maybe grocery shopping or night life? Might be neat to see! Best wishes!!!
i had this when i was 13-15 (after being passed down from abt 3 ppl) and its still my fav and i miss it so much LOL all of my friends that came over LOVED it and sleepovers were super easy to the point where we fit ten ppl lolol
I just got my ZINUS twin bed and mattress. Its in my living room. It's got storage underneath. Now when my daughter or sister spend the night,I won't have to sleep on my air mattress!!! 😀 I'll buy a couple body pillows for sitting.

@@rosewaters2533 hi, im late but i have a question. do you think having the spring matress work better than foam ones?

You've just reminded me of the nightmare I used to have, trying to get a sheet over this when it's stretched out!
How's it faring now?
@@sea7710 we still use it and love it as our main bed.
thank you so much!! @@soonerfan61
SomeoneNamed Me do you use king size sheets?
Kayla Sharayne no, I use separate twin sheets, and it works just fine. However, king sized sheets would work if you plan on permanently leaving it in its extended size! In fact I think king sheets would be slightly larger than the mattresses when left next to each other :)
i know im late to reply but the HEMNES bed has a reputation for being ikea's hardest furniture piece to put together
A great review. My friends have this in their apartment. 3 of us can easily sit comfortably while watching tele, or playing on our laptops etc. They’ve not mentioned the issue with the mattress, but they’ve only had it since about middle of last year. It fits in extremely well with your studio apartment Tina.
Thank you Nadine! Yes the bed is great for lounging, so much space!
Is it still working?
We have this daybed in our guestroom/office. It is usually in the king size configuration. To make it more comfortable, we use a king size mattress topper. Assembly was complicated and took my husband 2 days. Our wall to wall carpet makes it difficult to open/close. I would buy it again.
Agree! in my case, having a rug makes it impossible to open lol
i dont even know why this video was recommended but god was it interesting
Flipping a mattress is not a hack it is what you are supposed to do!
after sleeping my whole life on couches and finally having a real bed, it feels like a hack to me.
My mum just bought me this bed and we are assembling it today!😁I’m so excited😂
thoughts?
This is by far one of the most helpful well made videos I have ever come across RUclips or otherwise. I am interested in getting this daybed for the living space look yet functional sleeping space and you answered all my questions. Thank you. You are awesome!
I'm not even looking for a good day bed but I still enjoyed this video very much. Great work :-)
I assembled this by myself with a bad back and it took 8 1/2 hours (and then a few days to recover lol). Overall I LOVE this bed & it's versatility, though I do agree about the mattresses. I flip and change mine out regularly to help with the sagging issue (and I'm a 5'2" plus size gal).
Floor sleeper but I’m still here for this🙌🏻😄
Had mine for 3 nearly 4 years and I love it!! Haven’t found a better bed. I also love the 3 drawers underneath they’re massive!
Is the mattress thin when you make it a bigger bed
Hi Eva can I ask , have you used other mattresses , say one with heavier weights than Ikea's Asvang(the one comes with this bed)? As long as the size fits, is it okay to replace with our own mattress?
Hey! Great Video
I’ve never seen a video from you, but I enjoyed watching this one.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience Milou!
Your english is not bad, please stop saying that.
I flip my mattress every time I change my sheets. Both vertically as well as horizontally.
Meaning how you arrange the two mattresses...in the video she shows that it fits two ways on the expanded frame.
I also suggest rolling the mattress for a couple of hours. It helps distribute the fluff or whatever is inside
Enjoy your new bed! 4/5 years is not bad :)
Heidy Katheryn I’ve slept on it myself and it’s pretty comfortable even with only one mattress layer!
Thanks again. x
I get firm twin mattresses from Asian furniture store! they are much better for the back support and it's been 2 years still super comfortable! They are also cheaper as long as you haggle lol
Great video, thanks for your help!! One of the best review videos I’ve ever seen by the way - detailed content, organized, concise.

I wonder if someone could put it together on a sturdy base with wheels
Daybeds aside _dUDE HER SKIN IS GLOWING LIKE- HOW_
It took me 4 hours, by myself, to assembly the bed enough to sleep in it, and another 2 to finish it. I agree, it would be worth paying for assembly.
I purchased mine without the mattresses since I already have a couple of twin futons I could put on it. Although they aren’t very comfortable even with tatami underneath. I was considering getting the mats they usually come with but now I’ll reconsider. I appreciate your review
i saw the thumbnail and was like... wait.... THATS MY BED??? anyways i love this bed
I have that bed and I’ve had it for 5 years still 💕 it
Thank you so much. I want this bed but I was a little hesitant and now because of this video I feel very well informed and less hesitant on buying it.
I have had mine for 4 years and I did not buy the fold out beds but i might buy them for my birthday.
LunarPlayz_YT123 :3 what mattress did you use?
THIS VIDEO IS A LIFE SAVER!!!!!
I wish this was longer. I am almost 6 feet.
OH MY GOD! U ARE AMAZING! THANK U SO MUCH for this video! Valid information!
Can you give me the dimensions for when both beds are out? I have a very tight space and am trying to measure how far out the bed would go if I tried to extend it.
It's a good idea to flip your mattress anyway. Warm wishes from Minnesota! ❤️❤️❤️ May your pencils always be sharp and your colors never bleed.
Girl get a bed topper.
A what?
A mattress topper that adds a layer of cushion and support.
I did and it's so much better now way more comfy
For this bed I’d recommend two Malfors matresses
Good stuff.. I am watching this video after purchasing it, have not assembled it yet. But your video is really informative.
I just got it !! And I already had the mattresses from a previous double bed that I had so it wasn’t that expensive! This is a very good bed for small rooms .
What mattresses do you use?
@@JaylahCatlin Hi sorry for the late answer, i use mattresses that i already had from a previous double bed that i had. its this ones www.ikea.com/fr/fr/p/malfors-matelas-en-mousse-mi-ferme-blanc-10272284/?cid=fr%7cps%7cgo%7c--&gclid=CjwKCAjwlZf3BRABEiwA8Q0qq-QXb8hQz0NePZlhHrKB4w_IKpY0VZVPf4ztA-P7HE5nmfkPjWewLhoCYhoQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
“Lounging around for hours doesn’t seem like a good idea anyways” - said no mother ever

Thanks for the review, I am thinking to buy one myself. Your review really helps!
Great, I'm glad!
Thanks!
I’m getting one soon, I don’t have a small space, they are just so functional 😅

Will

Did the mattresses work ok?
And when stacked?
Thx for warning me about the matrasses.
I wish they sold a black version of this bed
I love the mattresses they really help with my Back 😊
did you get the mattress it came with
I have this bed but in the raw wood version.
Thank you for your honest review.
Big fan! Getting this for Christmas since I'm I'm need of a new bed🥰

Excellent Review!
Thank you for sharing your experience.
I"m tempted to do this, but dragging a giant twin matress and storing it when not in use sounds like a pain, but then again I only would need to do that for a sleepover i assume?
Do u think it would be a good idea to get twin mattresses from other brands if the mattresses start to sag?

How’s the soft mattress going after another 5 years? In case you wanna change yours, Ikea has a firm version mattress called Vannareid.
Is the bed squeaky? Thank you!
Thank you for making this. I am about to move in to a new room so this definitely helps!!
Thank you!
