This sounds like a nice replacement for my dedicated 5.1.2 home theater in the living room. As my wife is tired of looking at speakers everywhere, I am looking for a different solution.
@@hatoraidcowboy naw. Just looking for now. Trying to find out how much in Canadian. And my surround locations aren’t ideal either. Not sure how this would work with the Nakamichi.
Nice review Sir! Any thoughts on Dragon vs Samsung Q990c? I just received a Q990c last week, my first sound bar ever, and it sounds great, the setup alone is worth the admission, it took less then 5 minutes. It does not sound as good as a full set of good speakers, size does matter, and where u really noticed the difference is in the mids and warmth of the system or lack their of. Small speakers just can't produce great mids, that being said, this is still an outstanding system and am not returning it for the price I paid. Thanks
@hatoraidcowboy They stated an October delivery. I do have a stand-alone theater room that was initially wired for a 7.2.4 system, but the price for this was quite compelling compared to a complete system. I had to give it a try and based on reviews it does not sound like I will be disappointed.
Thanks for covering this, absolutely loved your review and would love to hear updates after break in (if that is applicable to the dragon and after it’s dialed in even further). I’m dead set on a projector for my new house but not sure if I should go Dragon (when it’s next applicable) or start my separates journey and for on an emotiva processor with arendals and maybe emotiva or monolith amplifier. If your arendals setup with the emotiva are a 10 out of 10, what would you rate the dragon out of 10? Really appreciate all your work!
Thank you! In the “soundbar” niche I would say the Dragon is a 10/10. While the height effects arent always perfect, what it had accomplished with only two rear surround speakers, a couple of subs and a soundbar is astonishing. I would always pick my Arendal setup and processor 100 times over but if I had to go soundbar I wouldnt hesitate to go with the Nakamichi
Got my limited edition a couple weeks ago I still have not got it dialed in because the settings are quite extensive I didn’t like the default 200hz on the subs so I’ve put it at 120hz and 1 in the front left and 1 on the rear right for better imaging I can say if you have an Xbox series x and we’re going crazy with the atmos lag this thing fixed that issue for me I did use a tape measure for all the speakers but I’m still trying to get the bass right like the settings in the OSD for bass volume and the bass settings on the app so far the sound is ridiculous especially with the first part of ready player one during the first car race..WOW!!! I’d like to know after you dialed it in what your bass settings are on??

My only issue is if i was to go with this setup, i will be running a front laser short throw projector which means the spot where i would use for the soundbar is where the projector sits. Anybody have a idea where to place the soundbar or the projector?
Thank you for your awesome review! I have the Samsung q990c and I loses connection with its speakers often/randomly. I was wondering if you've been able to watch a full movie and if you've been able to see any speakers issues losing connections. Kind regards!
Awesome video. The Dragon is not only breathing fire but throwing out fireballs of thunderous sound. Great to see! Do you think a Samsung HW-Q990C holds up for its price? In my country, I’m getting the Samsung Q990C for about $900. Do you think it’s a good deal or should I look for some other options? My budget was only around $500 but given the Samsungs are on sale, was tempted to buy those. Once again, awesome content. And subscribed!
Thank you and thank you for subscribing! I havent heard the 990C, but it seems like a good system. My advice is start small if you’re on a budget(like I did) see if you like the 990C. If you do use that while you save up for an upgrade 😎
@@hatoraidcowboy That's a wonderful suggestion. Start small, build big. Not just in sound bars but in life as well I guess. Small but meaningful steps. If possible, can you review soundbars that are a bit budget-friendly, say around $1000? The mass market is between the $500-1000 range as it hits the sweet spot when paired with a decent TV, say an OLED. That would be awesome to see. Keep up the good work.
@user-fj1ms8rw1d Unfortunately I dont have control over that stuff LOL Companies would have to be willing to send me their products. Sometimes they do sometimes they dont. This just happened to be my coworker’s system. But I’ll keep it in mind! Thanks for all the support!

Let's say you had a bit more of a budget what would be a step up from something like this Can you add extra Subs to the same system? Also would a larger room help with the rear channel so it's not so close to the couch or the listener
I dont believe you can add more subs to this system. Not sure if that’s a feature that could be added via firmware update in the future. With more money I would just go separates.
No way. As good as the Dragon is, like I said nothing can replace individual channels. But the Dragon bridges that gap between soundbars and standard Home Theaters. I love what the Dragon is doing but I’d still choose my Arendals.
@hatoraidcowboy thanks for your response. I do have one more question about the Arendell speakers. Considering the additional cost, do you think the Perlisten R series is worth the upgrade over the Arendel?
@@hatoraidcowboy I would like to see the return of home theater in a box, it would better the performance of the soundbar yet still simple emough for regular folks.
@@hatoraidcowboy nothing as good as the Nakamichi though... I mean just imagine the Dragon with LCR, that would have brought it to a totally different level. Still waiting for a 3 meter long soundbar with left and right at least 2.5 meters apart. LOL!
What are your thoughts on the Nakamichi dragon? Do you think it bridges the gap between soundbar and a normal home theater setup with individual speakers?
I would say for 85-90% of the content that we watched the Atmos effects were extremely convincing. It also depends on how well the Atmos mix is. But I still feel like an AVR with individual speakers and proper in ceiling or ceiling mounted speakers will always beat the Dragon….But man does the Dragon do a really, REALLY good job of bridging that gap.
I have a Sonos ARC, sub, 2 Sonos ERA's for rears. The sound is awesome. HOWEVER, they have started losing connection to Alexa, & to the TV. AND the new app update SUX big time. I am looking to replace the system with something else. That is why I am here. Maybe Nakamichi?
I have the dragon but still have not dialed it in. Mine states 1of 500, not sure if all of the early release models are numbered the same or if they actually have 2, 3, 4 of 500.
They say the Dragon can reach 125db that's much louder than individual speakers with a receiver can reach so is that where the Dragon earns its money? What do you think?
Not for me…Loudness is not indicative of a good product. Where the Dragon shines to me is tricking your brain into hearing sound and atmos effects where there are no speakers
I would say the Sonos Era 300s technology Blows away the rears on that Nakamichi! but man that Nakamichi soundbar is a beast… ain’t nothing touching that!!
@@bobwalters9151 Wow I would really like to hopefully see some YT videos cover this comparison. Overall, I think the Sonos is good but I've heard that the ARC needs a revision or upgrade to compete.
It's kinda hard to give an opinion when one's not listening in person! To my ears and bear in mind audio coming out of my smartphones speaker, I actually think it sounds tinny and bright. If it does in deed sound that way... personally there's no way I would be binge watching with this thing. As we all know 2 channel stereo playback is where sound bars fall by the wayside. No imaging, no stereo separation but more importantly no enveloping sound stage. Excellent video though and BTW what a beautiful well thought out cinema livingroom. Bravo to all concerned 👏
Thank you! It can sound a little bright on the treble but as I said in the video, a youtube video wont even come close to doing this thing justice. But it definitely doesnt sound tinny. Huge sound coming from the Nakamichi Dragon
Great review by the way, another couple of questions. Are the speakers wired or wireless? Our tv is right above the bedroom so my wife is constantly telling me to turn it down at night. I wonder if the two sub woofers may make the system too loud. What do you think? Have you also reviewed another system that you might recommend if you think the Dragon may be too loud? Thank you! @@hatoraidcowboy
Thank you! Everything is “wireless”…..Wireless in that there are no speaker wires but each speaker including the subs do need to be plugged in for power so you’ll need an outlet near each speaker and sub. Unfortunately I havent heard anything comparable in the way of soundbars.
@@hatoraidcowboy People today are more into having space, simplicity and saving a buck. Not that the dragon is inexpensive, but soundbars in general are cheaper than traditional setups. Only hardcore home theater enthusiasts are super concerned with a full blown home theater configuration. Today’s consumers are not the same as back in the day. Just like how people consume media is not like back in the day. Times change and so does technology and philosophy
@@hatoraidcowboy A bike, scooter or skateboard can not “replace” a car but you see more n more people than ever before commuting to work or wherever because it’s cheaper and more convenient to do so. How many people truly have the space and money for a full blown home theater in 2023?? A soundbar can give nice enough sound to enjoy movies so it definitely can “replace” speakers. Some people swear by records being the best but you seen what tapes and CDs did to vinyl. Oh wait, digital basically wiped out CDs lol. Things change my man
@paulrevere1479 I’m assuming you have a soundbar? I think you’re taking my general statement as offensive. I was stating a fact because some people are saying the Dragon is better than a typical Home Theater setup and its not.
@@hatoraidcowboy I have been into home theater for 35 years or so. Not offended and I have both traditional speakers and a soundbar. It’s not about what’s better, it’s about what is better for the consumer. Your home theater can’t compete with Dolby Cinema or IMAX but you still love your system right? Movies on digital are technically not better than disc but people prefer for the most part to choose digital over disc these days. You’re confusing “best” with convenience. I’m a projector guy but I won’t tell someone their TV is less than a projector if that’s what they prefer. The Dragon for those who want the Dragon can and will replace speakers. Just saying
I wouldn’t classify this sound bar as 11.4.6, instead I would classify it as 11.2.6 because there is only 2 separate sub In closures. What’s the name of the movie after ready player one?
There are 4 physical subs 2 in each box facing opposite directions and isolated form each other. You can enable 1,2,3, or the best way all 4. The previous 9.2.4 only had 2 physical subs, thus the 4 is actually more accurate IMO
I had the Sony HT-A9 and upgraded to the Dragon. The Dragon is VASTLY better. It is not close. Louder, punchier bass, better height effects, and a more convincing sound bubble (I hesitate to call the Dragon a “bubble,” because it envelopes the entire room). But my favorite part may be that you can turn off the 360 processing and output pure stereo for listening to vinyl, or output 5.1 or 7.1 when listening to legacy surround mixes. The Sony always upmixed.
I got the Sonos but it wasn’t doing it for me. Switched from full size speakers, Sonos sounds too much like everything came off of a small tiny box. Returned the Sonos and ordered the dragon. Hopefully the dragon will live up to all this hype and the price tag.
@@keithskoglund10 decided to take the money and build a nice sonus Faber system instead of this system. At the end of the day, soundbar just can’t match full size speakers during my tests.
@@bossmani594 gotcha, if you have the budget then it’s definitely the better performing option. I ended up with the Dragon and dude, it makes the Sonos system sound like a child’s toy. This sounds really really good, and I had high end focal systems in my car previously.
If I didn't know any better, I would probably recommend this. But since I "know" better and have a dedicated 5.2.4 system, I wouldn't recommend this, unless you're absolutely limited on space and refuse to deal with wires. The deal breaker for me is the bass. It seems to me that people with massive subs like a Hsu, SVS, Rythmik, etc, would not want to downgrade in the sub department. Sure, I can agree that the surround aspect is amazing on the Dragon. But if deep bass is important, I wouldn't want to compromise by getting the Dragon. And at $4k, I wouldn't even consider it for a bedroom setup...at this time. Thanks for the review!
I would never trade my current Home Theater for the dragon. Or any surround sound setup. The Dragon is great for limited spaces or WAF. In its own niche which is Sounbars, this thing is fantastic and cant be beat
@@hatoraidcowboy Agreed. It's in a class if it's own in the soundbar world. I can see and hope that other companies start making their own versions so that prices will come down and I can snatch one for my bedroom... On sale... On Black Friday. 😁
@@hatoraidcowboy No. I tried all the good music that I like in various genres and in ALL Naka settings, compared side by side with smaller and cheaper KEF + micro sub and also Bose l1Pro and was amazed how mediocre the Nakamichi sounds. those who have dedicated theater room can have a full system so they don't need a bar, those have just have normal use living room would like mix use, the subs are dirty and made for large explosions, they reveal location and create zones in the room where its too much too little because it's open and not closed sub (pro for movies con for music) . I'm not complaining because they are great for movies, but not many reviews and no one really telling it as it is about music.
@@hatoraidcowboy don't compare to Sonos , put something good side by side and let me know. I used KEF ls50WII plus kef 62 sub (half of the size of one oak sub and weigh like 4 oak subs), I also compared to Bose L1Pro 8 tower.
I have arc, 2 subs, and era 300 rears and it’s still not to my liking. Certain parts sound good but nothing fixes the lackluster sound from the arc itself, specifically dialogue. Just bought the dragon today to replace sonos. If Sonos didn’t limit user settings or features I may have stuck with it, but not allowing you to pair additional front speakers and have the arc act as a dedicated center channel is why I’m leaving Sonos.
Still doesn’t improve arc audio, which isn’t good. Sonos should allow us to use 4 era 300’s instead of arc…but as with Sonos, you have zero options and can’t adjust anything to your liking.
Great review, i'm going to check out more of your content. There is only one bummer aspect to this system other than its lack of availability in Australia is that every speaker requires power sockets. In a bedroom with only two double plug points, plus with a ton of items already plugged in, having so many additional power points to accommodate is potentially risky if I can't get an electrician in to add more connections.
Solution to most of you power plug in problems. Purchas a decent Power Conditioner like what I have the Panamax Line is very good. Then you can plug 11 components of power usage into the Power Conditioner, and it only has one electrical plug into the wall socket.
Not how that works on the Dragon since most of the speakers arent physical speakers…plus I dont have access to the Dragon anymore, its not mine and not my home lol
@hatoraidcowboy i would want one coz it save money and space plus efforts tomset up coz a full of speakers plus whatever is required even cables to link up a home theater system ain't cheap and lots of tedious setup and room adjustment blah blah blah but the nakamichi's straight out of the box!!!
meant to bridge the gap between AVR? i don't know about that statement.. at its current price i just dont think its worth it. a 9.2 AVR and bottom of the barrel klipch costco specials will still blow the dragon out of the water with 2x the height effect and channel separation at half the price..
Pricing aside, there is a huge gap between soundbars and home theater setups. I didnt even mention price because that wasnt the purpose of the video. The purpose of the video was to see how close it can perform compared to an individual speaker setup for those who cant have a home theater setup in their home. I dont care about the price, I care about functionality. Whether its worth the asking price, that’s a whole different topic.

Great review of the DRAGON, it’s def a beast. Question: what wall mount is he using for the rear surround speakers?
Thanks!

This sounds like a nice replacement for my dedicated 5.1.2 home theater in the living room. As my wife is tired of looking at speakers everywhere, I am looking for a different solution.
I’m curious how it will sound in an open floor plan like a living room.
That’s the main reason I purchased the Nakamichi dragon and just cannot wait to put my hands on it. Hopefully mine will arrive in November
You’ve already preordered?
@@hatoraidcowboy naw. Just looking for now. Trying to find out how much in Canadian. And my surround locations aren’t ideal either. Not sure how this would work with the Nakamichi.
Sorry. Naka is not shipping or sending to any other country (for now) besides the US and China I believe. @@mustangfred2006
Thanks
Thank you. I have not had a chance to hear the Q990c so unfortunately I can’t compare the two. Congrats on your purchase!
Didn’t realize Nakamichi was still around..when I heard nakamichi dragon, I was thinking the cassette deck😂

Best review yet for the Dragon! Mine arrives in October.
Wow thank you!! Come back and let us know what your experience and thoughts are.
I am waiting on my Dragon as well. Can't wait!
@devarrioraines5018 Noice! When are you getting it?
@hatoraidcowboy They stated an October delivery. I do have a stand-alone theater room that was initially wired for a 7.2.4 system, but the price for this was quite compelling compared to a complete system. I had to give it a try and based on reviews it does not sound like I will be disappointed.
Great review! 👍. Cant wait for mine to arrive in november
Thank you!
Thanks for the review! Waiting for my unit. Decided to build a dragon inspired entertainment unit. Almost finished, ready for my system to arrive.
Congrats! When is it supposed to arrive?
Hi, thanks for the overview. Are there any measurements? FR and max SPL before compression?
Unfortunately I dont have that info
Its my coworker’s Nakamichi so I dont know what his bass setting is on.

Soundbar for the room. In shared space, living room. Tv for the whole room to the right, and to the left, I have 32" samsung 4k tv. Vividstorm floor rising screen sits behind the tv, and rises up when I want big screen mode. Since it is cinegray light rejecting (like, not sure if the use cinegrayspecifically), can use it with main tv and 9verhead lights on.......with the settings I told you about on avs forum, dynamic mode on the ls12000 is great. The dragon would bring great sound to the great visuals
Would it have been worth the cost if they had given the option to add two more of the surround speakers or would have just been overkill ?

My only issue is if i was to go with this setup, i will be running a front laser short throw projector which means the spot where i would use for the soundbar is where the projector sits. Anybody have a idea where to place the soundbar or the projector?

I havent heard the 990C, but it seems like a good system. My advice is start small if you’re on a budget(like I did) see if you like the 990C. If you do use that while you save up for an upgrade 😎

That's a wonderful suggestion.

Can you add extra Subs to the same

Would you replace your Arendal setup with this?
@user-rs7ko1md3v I havent heard the R series yet. I’m supposed to get some in for review though.
@hatoraidcowboy Thanks. I am looking forward to your review of the R series.
The only problem I have with soundbars is the left and right channels are not far enough apart or I would be all over this.
That’s fair. It does a pretty good job though. One of the reasons I say soundbars will never replace individual speakers

😂 LOLLLL
What are your thoughts on the Nakamichi dragon? Do you think it bridges the gap between soundbar and a normal home theater setup with individual speakers?
How close would you say the Dragon is to a normal AVR and some very basic towers. Are the the Atoms channels very convincing?
I would say for 85-90% of the content that we watched the Atmos effects were extremely convincing. It also depends on how well the Atmos mix is. But I still feel like an AVR with individual speakers and proper in ceiling or ceiling mounted speakers will always beat the Dragon….But man does the Dragon do a really, REALLY good job of bridging that gap.
Ok thanks for answering
Great review I’m subscribing lol
I plan on getting for my family after I move into our new home...
Looks like they all say 1 of 500.
Jbl 1300x , Samsung q990c or this ine what are the best in bass and sound , i like to view movies and play games + some music
I havent experienced JBL or the Samsung
They say the Dragon can reach 125db that's much louder than individual speakers with a receiver can reach so is that where the Dragon earns its money? What do you think?
Not for me…Loudness is not indicative of a good product. Where the Dragon shines to me is tricking your brain into hearing sound and atmos effects where there are no speakers
Fair enough thank you!
FINALLY!
Maybe Sonos would be a bit better with the new Era 300 rear modules? Or would probably still get torched by the Dragon.

I didnt get to listen to any music while I was there.
@@hatoraidcowboy thanks I really appreciate your detailed review and honest opinions. Great job I will continue to watch your reviews.

What do you mean a soundbar will never replace a speaker setup? If someone chooses a soundbar then it just replaced the speaker setup.
Some people say that the Dragon is the future of home theater and that it will replace individual speaker placement
Just saying

There are 4 physical subs 2 in each box facing opposite directions and isolated form each other. You can enable 1,2,3, or the best way all 4. The previous 9.2.4 only had 2 physical subs, thus the 4 is actually more accurate IMO
@basictekkk Yea I forgot you can activate as many subs as you want. Really cool!
Wonder how this compares to Sony HT system?
Same here!
They aren't in the same league 🤔 That's like comparing a Honda Accord to an BMW M5 competition 🤔 You already know the outcome!!!!
@@natiahs That's all I need to hear on the topic
@natiahs Great point, the Dragon has an exceptional bubble effect enveloping you in immersive sound. 100% agree
I got the Sonos but it wasn’t doing it for me. Switched from full size speakers, Sonos sounds too much like everything came off of a small tiny box. Returned the Sonos and ordered the dragon. Hopefully the dragon will live up to all this hype and the price tag.

How can dragon system being used with projector instead of TV?
Pretty sure you can still use a projector. It uses hdmi
It sounds like a good system, but the obvious thing of it all as you need the room to properly appreciate anything with 11+ channels of sound.
Its a 5.2.4 at best

Thank you! Yea you do need a lot of outlets. You’d almost have to have the perfect outlet setup already or add additional ones like you said
Solution to most of you power plug in problems. Purchas a decent Power Conditioner like what I have the Panamax Line is very good. Then you can plug 11 components of power usage into the Power Conditioner, and it only has one electrical plug into the wall socket.

meant to bridge the gap between AVR? i don't know about that statement.. at its current price i just dont think its worth it. a 9.2 AVR and bottom of the barrel klipch costco specials will still blow the dragon out of the water with 2x the height effect and channel separation at half the price..
Pricing aside, there is a huge gap between soundbars and home theater setups. I didnt even mention price because that wasnt the purpose of the video. The purpose of the video was to see how close it can perform compared to an individual speaker setup for those who cant have a home theater setup in their home.
