  • I am a a small animal veterinarian who share the cases I see. Here’s why a good, thorough physical examination with your vet is so important for your pets health. Every cat needs to have their nails checked every month. Older cats too often have overgrown ails that can grow into the foot pads and cause painful infections.

Poor ol' baby 💔 senior kitty nails have to be checked regularly, they're thick and brittle and aged kitties can't usually scratch as much to file them down (most have arthritis and just move less preferring a warm spot to sunbathe than anything requiring much effort in my experience). My senior rescue goes in 1-3x a year for checkups and bloodwork at minimum, she's 14 now and last bloodwork was the best it's been since she came to live with me at 9 yrs old. Her next appt is Monday, hoping everything comes back normal 🤞 she takes meds for arthritis and has well managed asthma so routine vet visits are part of her pain management.

I thought I had been doing a good job of keeping up on trimming my old boy’s claws, but one day I noticed one of his claws was starting to grow thick and into his pad. Thankfully I was able to trim it before it broke the skin 😢

PS: one of my cats got concerned with the sound of the video 🥺

My kitty usually sheds nail shell casings and the nails are then shorter, but recently he’s had 2-3 that don’t seem to be shedding. He’s 17 and not sure he’d let me touch them. They don’t appear to bother him other than he keeps snagging them on rugs, but I’m wondering why they’ve gotten so long. This has never happened before. I can only take him to the vet if absolutely necessary because he has bad car and vet anxiety and IBD, which has flared up before due to stress from a vet visit ☹️ (Edit to add: He does go in every 6 months because he’s a senior and on Prednisolone, so he needs to be monitored closely.)

Seems like you cut the nails into the quick or a little short. Poor old cat. Its good they are getting trimmed for sure.

she certainly didn't cut it too short. The blood was released from the pocket where the overgrown nail penetrated the paw.I'm glad she/he received the treatment from this very nice veterinarian.

Why dont you give the cat something to kill the pain before you go cutting her nails. This was the worst part of the video.

This cat is 19 years old. There is not an injectable pain medication that is safe enough. A topical wouldn’t penetrate the thick crusting infection and a ring block hurts too. The 1 second of discomfort trim the nails gives her the rest of her life pain free. Have you ever gotten a Novocain injection for a dental procedure. That hurts too

@@kristamagnificoDVM I understand you see this kind of pain daily and are as careful as possible to cause no harm. It is hard for us on the outside to see something scream in pain because many of us know what it is like to have a doctors disregard our pain even for a few seconds. Trauma from painful experiences stay a life time even after the pain stops.

That's horrible. the owner should relinquish ownership to the vet or a rescue who can place it with an owner that will give it the proper care. There is absolutely no excuse for this. I keep an eye on my 18 year old kittys nails. Also there are people that will come to your home and trim the nails if the owner can't do it on their own.

@@Spikypotato. Agree! It should be common knowledge for a cat owner ,especially in the case of a 19 year old cat that nails need to be checked as they naturally grow just like human nails but due to the fur cat nails aren't as visible.

@@kristamagnificoDVM Hi again doc, would you consider to make a monthly reminder on your social media like ”Time to Check your cats claws&paws!” or something…? ❤ If it could be a monthly thing people do, a habit…maybe a slogan they remember, like ”pay the bills, check the nails”.
❤and it costs nothing. the pain of this poor kitty, that could have been avoided so easyly, haunts me😭
