  • Lost Horse Mine is a great hike in Joshua Tree National Park that takes you to an amazing stamp mill in the middle of the park. The hike is 4 miles round trip just to the mine or 6.5 miles for the full loop. It is a good way to get an introduction to the park's history and a fun spot to explore. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Really nice video, Josh! I'm surprised you and your dad didn't see any wildlife -- we took a snack break at the foot of the stamp mill area and were practically attacked by chipmunks looking for a handout. :)

That is awesome! But yea, I haven't really seen much wildlife out in Joshua Tree myself.

hot weather. Thanks for the memories, we always head for Joshua Tree when we visit Palm Springs!

Maybe my attention was focused on the amazing views in your video, but did not see any tailings or waste rock anywhere, which I usually see at abandoned mines. I always love trying to seek out the actual mines. I’m sure they probably plugged it for safety. Perhaps that structure you pointed out was the old mine...
Anyway, that is for sure one to add to my list. Love that stuff!!! Great video as always!!

I was hoping you'd hike up to the top and overlook the desert.
I've hiked it once before and found that view to be like looking back in time. Nowhere can you see a man-made object. Just miles of openness. So rare in Southern California.
Thanks for letting me re visit the hike.

Thanks for the tour. I just hiked part way up, but it was too late in the day and very windy for the 75 year old me. I intend to get an earlier start next try and make sure I have plenty of water. Other hikers coming down reported seeing rattlesnakes on the trail. The one structure you pointed out was probably the water holding reservoir. The mill was steam powered and ran 24/7 so it required a lot of water which was piped over from a well at Ryan's ranch. Also the area was completely deforested for burning wood to create steam. I read that the mine shaft was capped with concrete, but that collapsed when mine shafts below began to cave in, so they filled in in again with the expanding foam as is used for insulation. I read that after the mine closed, Johnny Lang (who made the original claim) came back and lived in a cabin somewhere in the area. He hiked out of the area to go for provisions and died along the way. I understand he was my age so if I came down that trail I can see it doing him in! 🙂 William Keys (who later had a shootout and killed Worth Bagley) and a couple workers found his body when they were building the road to Keys View. You can find online a photo of them burying Johnny Lang (note, of course this is not the musician guitarist of the same name). Coming up the road to Keys View, just before the sign indicating the Lost Horse MIne Trail, you can find his grave with headstone on the right side of the road. I read that it was dug up twice by grave robbers looking for gold, or a map to Johnny's gold treasure trove. So the park has actually moved the grave stone to another location. JT Nat Park has a colorful human history, even if on the destructive side. I'm sure many of you reading this are familiar with the Gram Parsons story of his Manager stealing his body after he died at the Joshua Tree Inn and burning it at Cap Rock! See the movie "Grand Theft Parsons". They probably should make a film about Johnny Lang and his Texas cattle ranching family!
Fortunately plenty of natural beauty remains for the rest of us to enjoy!

If you have an offroad wc, the short trail to Ryan Ranch (not Ryan Mt.) is really accessible too. The trail used to be the road to the ranch and is fairly wide for a trail.

I used to love hunting around 29 Palms for old mining sites in the 60's. I lived near there. I don't know if the USGS topo maps are still available but you could find the mines on the maps. We'd look for the garbage dumps at the sites to look for antique whisky bottles. Never found any, but did find a couple of old glass power line insulators.

It's on my bucket list, but as an outta-shape retiree (older than you dad, i think), I've got to be careful...i do want to do this hike----but I'll try to find a time when a younger friend can go along. So the dirt road to get to the parking lot should be fine with a normal Sedan like a prius? And how early would be best to get there? Is it as crowded as Hall of Horrors and Ryan Mountain?

The high wall structure seen starting at 6:12 was likely a cistern. Stamp mills required water to process ore.
