Just starting a new job with a great company that builds and maintains ponds. My new boss suggested that I watch a couple of videos by The Pond Digger on RUclips to gain some knowledge, understanding and terminology. I ended up watching all 21 segments of Building a Fishpond and loved it! Eric does a great job taking his time and explaining procedures. Kept me interested and excited to see the final pond. I plan to check back in and watch more videos. Thank you!!

The rock we used on this koi pond was called La Cresta. We purchased it at a local rock yard here in Southern California. We used a less expensive rock below water level you will see in the next Koi Pond Design video when we get it posted. Thanks for watching.

No you do not need a company manufactured filter for your pond. You could easily manage a 500 gallon pond with aquatic plants if you keep a conservative fish load. You will have limitations but No is the answer to your question.

We are posting the second video as soon as we can showing the pond drained to get you up close and personal with a couple important Pond Design elements for koi.
The flagstone path over the koi pond was just finished a couple days ago. The final plantings won't be finished until spring so a final glamor video won't happen for several months. But we do have more good things to come. Stay tuned!

We cycle all ponds big or small the same way. Once we get the pond up and running we add a conservative fish load and inoculate the biological filter with beneficial bacteria for 14 days. Feed the pond sparingly during the initial cycle, test the water for ammonia & nitrite as needed and take it slow. Typical cycle takes 4 to 6 weeks. Sometimes faster with the introduction of aquatic plants!

If your pond is leaking the waterfall foam is not the best solution as it is not a water proof product. If the plastic rigid pond is new than your issue is likely somewhere in the waterfall to pond transition. If you don't have a skimmer than you will need to cover your pond in the fall when all the leaves drop and have a good net to use for manual skimming as needed. Best of luck to you.

Nice looking pond. I like the square rocks. Looks good without being the stylish "natural look'. I'm building on a steep bank where I have to do 'stone masonry'. I can't possibly make it look like it just happened that way in nature. It 's still going to be beautiful!

  • @ThePondDigger
    @ThePondDigger  13 лет назад

@Arteolike After the pond is constructed the pond is vulnerable to dirt flowing in from heavy rain. The pond is all grown in now with ground cover surrounding the pond so the rain and irrigation does not send dirt into the pond.

We used a spray bottle to directly acid wash the mortar diluted to 50% and Rinsed the pond thoroughly before adding koi.
Minimum surface area? Good question and could be debated. I would say an 8' diameter surface area of water would be a good minimum starting point.

I am building a pond in my backyard and need some advice. I am not doing any special biological filtration, just a simple skimmer-to-waterfall filter design. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me if you like atlantic brand filtration systems, or if you dont use them because you build such elaborate ponds. If you respond, thanks a lot, and your videos have been incredibly helpful.

@HospitalWaste Since I was born and bred in Sunny Southern California I'm really not the best person to advise you on this topic. However I have traveled the US to visit koi facilities and I can tell you this: In Michigan, ponds are drained and koi are brought indoors over the winter. In Japan, mud ponds are drained and koi are brought into green houses for the winter. If you are serious about raising koi in your extreme environment, your koi will likely need to come in for the winter.

Thanks! All good info. I'm building a waterfall next to my house that has an amazing 12 foot 'lift'. down a steep bank. This makes a pond liner impossible at the top 3 feet. I rely on mortar. I noted your statement, (something like) "We're adding acid to counter the mortar." I might expand my project to include Koi fish so that interests me. (lime/ acid PH balance?)

Eric, I like the grounds as they are in this video; however, I wonder about something. From what I can see, the grounds are mostly dirt with boulders randomly scattered around. That looks awesome. What happens, though, when it rains there? Doesn't the ground turn muddy and run into the pond?

But i can only find the quarts sleeve's, were can i but a glass one?

@rollomaniac96 Several years ago we worked in Florida at the EPCOT center building a water feature for their flower and garden show. It was a temporary display that was up and running for 30 days. It took a big team (20) of us to complete it in less than a week. It was a great experience as we worked nights at the park because landscape work is not allowed durning the parks business hours. So we worked from 11pm till 7am. It was a great experience. @madisonblue96 Traditionally we work in the Southern California Basin but have been know to travel the US. Most of the times our efforts outside of California are somehow tied to a business training seminar that we are teaching or learning from. We would definitely be interested in building Indiana. The thing to consider is our Mobilization Fee would require me to lodge and feed my team. That adds a chunk to the cost of your feature. Give me more details and I can give you an idea of cost.

Have you got a video on something like what you have in the background, but not so deep or big.... so for a smaller space. Also where you cannot dig deep into the soil due to planning permission and underground pipeworks. I am looking for something similar but that can be paddled in by children and people. So not for fish and poop.. something that can be kept clean naturally with plants and stones or whatever.

Do you have any plans or suggestions on making a combination in ground and above ground koi pond? I have a small existing pond now that's only 3'x6' at 2 ft deep. I'm considering redoing it using the existing 2' and adding 2' above. But I want to make sure the sides (wooden pond?) are going to be able to hold the pressure of the water.
