LOVE the sound of those old John Deere and Farmall tractors. We had an old Model A growing up. That was a fun little tractor. Dad sold it in 2000 for a LOT more than he paid for it back in 1974. Simple, easy to maintain machines that run and run and run.
i love restoreing and painting old tractors and old farm motors like the old hit and miss motors,, the old gas motor powered washin machines are fun to restore too, allways wanted to live on a farm and restore stuff,, old American cars and machinery is awesome in the way it was built and function,,
Nice 720 , yep im jealous lol ! I grew up running a 720 to work ground and green chop for cows. Its the tractor that got me stuck on John Deeres .Way to go Wes ! ! !
Great pair of tractors, that 720 is in really good shape your starting to get some nice toys. It would look good pulling a 3 or 4 furrow plow. Glad it went to a good home!
Nice looking 720 Wes! If i had the money i would buy a wide front 730 row crop. Thats my dream tractor. It will have to wait till the kids are grown. I hope they are some left then that are affordable.
Part 1: As far as the John Deere, I have no clue why they have 2 gas tanks. The John Deere does have 2 engines, a small engine to start the big engine. The Farmall has one engine but can run on 2 kinds of fuel. It has a small gasoline tank that is about 1 gallon in size and a big diesel fuel tank to run on which in this Farmall MD is about . The reason the Gasoline tank is 20 gallons in size.
Part 2: The reason the gasoline tank is so small is because the engine is only meant to run on gasoline for a few minutes until the engine gets warmer so it can run on Diesel. The Diesel tank is so much bigger because it is the primary fuel for the engine, which these Farm tractors mostly ran for hours at a time. I understand where you are coming from, I am a country boy (but live in the city) and we have a couple tractors of our own that I am trying to get up and running again. hope this helps.
it starts up on gasoline but is transferred to diesel, which is its main fuel. I think its for those cold days so the tractor can start easier and warm up on gasoline, then transfer to diesel when it gets warmed up because diesels doesn't like to start when they are cold.
Well it didn't take you long to figure out the 720! Nice tractor you got there. The pony motors cost more to restore than the rest of the tractor, so take good care of it. And just a tip, when you go to crank the big engine, don't touch the throttle because the extra fuel can get into the combustion chamber and backfire.
Twas really to cold start them. This tractor was built at a time when 6volt electrical systems were a way more common then 12volt. So 12volt batterys would have been a way more expensive and more often then not they wouldnt have had the output amps to turn over the engine quick enought to start them from cold. So the best way to start the big diesels from cold was to either have a gas/diesel engine like in the mcormick or pony start it using a smaller gas engine.
I used a case model 14 (iirc had positive ground) she was dependable, she had her quirks but she was dfependable, I am envious of the jd and your friends tractor too. might I ask what you got the jd for on ebay?
Those pony motors are amazing my uncle has an old bull dozer diesel that you start with a pony motor I love that thing it's fun to operate I'm in love with that 720 Deere sharp tractor did you get a good deal
It's wonderful to see running Johnnie Poppers and equipment that helped build America. A big Thumbs up to the John Deere engineers for getting so much from so little. At one time, it was so common to hear poppers daily, just like hearing the distance sound of steam engine trains. I remember when I rode on a steam train from Omaha to Arkansas and to a 5 year old, just how massive it was. It was, for me, a swell time to grow up in .
hey wes cut that straight pipe off 3 inches from the top to get rid of that shroud , then hook it to something heavy to pull then video those black smoke rings coming out of it - nothing sounds better and that old girl will blow smoke rings - hope to see it
lovely looking tractor there wes. i have one here in the uk but not in as good of condition. that button you was pressing next to the starter button is for the fuel gauge (only has power when you press it). Again, beautiful tractor you have there. Enjoy it.
My dads friend just bought a 730 John deere last saterday at a guys collection of John deere 2 cylinders that he had. He had all models up for aucion. I'm buying an A from my dads same friend. I like those putt putt As
AHA! Thank you! Boy, they were clever back then, eh? I was puzzled, because I could not see a 1 or 2 gallon getting you anywhere! But if you only use it to get things going, well, it would last a while. I wonder: Was there 2 engines, one small gas one and one big main diesel, or were they clever enough to make the same engine burn both fuels? (I know enough to know that diesel has always been cheaper than gas!)
Well, both. I thought they both had a small gas tank for the same thing. (I'm a city boy, interested in farming,. Not a wise farm boy. But Ya Gots to learn somewheres!)
every time you get a tractor you make a bunch of videos about the new tractor, which in turn helps pay for...another new tractor. i see what you're doing here.

Nice move--start a cold tractor, pull it off trailer, then open it up. (if it was a cold tractor) Especially a diesel.

720 standard pony start diesel. Yeah, I'm smilin'. Pistons as big as coffee cans!
nice looking tractor. and the sound... I love that sound. really nice

very nice tractors
Its fun to find buy bring home and use them old tractors My wife my son and I own a lot of them plus original equipment that go with them
I used a case model 14 (iirc had positive ground) she was dependable, she had her quirks but she was dfependable, I am envious of the jd and your friends tractor too. might I ask what you got the jd for on ebay?

Let it crank. Once it gets oil pressure (check the gauge), THEN you can move the throttle a little bit.
I'm a JD fan myself, but I'm working on getting a one owner Farmall Super MD TA bought to add to my collection.
It's wonderful to see running Johnnie Poppers and equipment that helped build America.

That is a most interesting tractor, I look forward to seeing more about it in the future.
hey wes cut that straight pipe off 3 inches from the top to get rid of that shroud , then hook it to something heavy to pull then video those black smoke rings coming out of it - nothing sounds better and that old girl will blow smoke rings - hope to see it
Nice tractor! thats a nice trailer how bout a video on it? What length, axels, brand etc.
Thats a nice new toy to play with.
Just one more reason to be jealous of your lineup, Wes! That is one badass tractor!!
I enjoy videos of the old tractors. Someday I shall have the land and the good, old machines to use. Where in the Midwest is this?
New Jersey.
Chuck Bronco
Wow, they moved the Midwest further east!
cool.... those ones im more familiar with... my neighbour had a 730 and a 830 john deere in his yard for ages.
lovely looking tractor there wes. i have one here in the uk but not in as good of condition. that button you was pressing next to the starter button is for the fuel gauge (only has power when you press it).
Again, beautiful tractor you have there. Enjoy it.
If that john deere 720 had, had a 3 point hitch that tractor would of been way better but it's still pretty cool
the 720 sounds really really good.
Correction. I recounted, and Wes Pandy has 22 tractors in his possession.
Great JD! I'd love to have that farmall! Keep the videos coming and keep up the good work!
Them rear tires were a great addition, over the stock skinnie's .
My dads friend just bought a 730 John deere last saterday at a guys collection of John deere 2 cylinders that he had. He had all models up for aucion. I'm buying an A from my dads same friend. I like those putt putt As
If it's old i love it, except old women. You got a nice collection tractors.
thats a good looking tractor nice find.
Thats a COOL tractor I like those old JD diesels. I know a 830 is 472cubic inch I dont know about a 720
I never seen your trailer swan neck before I've just been to a big steam tractor rally with our set up show u
Sweet tractor
Are these going to be fun tractors or working tractors?
Nice tracktor and i like that strait pipe
MD - amish special. Except for the pneumatic tires.
Like the 720 a lot more!
Grew up on 450 D easy on fuel, will start in cold weather, cracked the head twice. Traded for a clean 560 gas.
I think yoi should have another pulling competition. The farmall tim has and the 720
Nice tractor Wes, what year is it ?
AHA! Thank you! Boy, they were clever back then, eh? I was puzzled, because I could not see a 1 or 2 gallon getting you anywhere! that's a humdinger for sure!
Nice bit of Kit!
If you are ever between 76 & 70 I can always give you a meal or a bed
Canadacatylist does and also many traveling Bands
Many Blessings...SMR
Well, both. I thought they both had a small gas tank for the same thing. (I'm a city boy, interested in farming,. Not a wise farm boy. But Ya Gots to learn somewheres!)
Friends don't let friends drive red tractors.
Zack Zander why
Why the hell not? I grew up on red and green tractors!
Most of the 720's have pups but the later ones near the end of production had electric starters
That's lovely I would love to own Paul uk
Gas starts quick&easy, diesel is higher compression. Start gas, use gas to start diesel, shut off gas. Necessary with older/weaker electric systems
there are 2 engines one main diesel. and a small gas 4cylindar that turned it over.
your parents house looks nice
That is great I love it please film this a lot Paul uk
Do you still have the 720 in the video today?
The clutch needs to spins when running
The 720's main engine is diesel. Only the pony motor is gas.
nice
very interesting! both of them
Before you climb on one of those 2 cylinder hand clutch widowmakers you be sure you know what you're doing
Love the new toy Wes, but what about some new videos? I'm sure you have been at least working on the new toy.
it disnae have have a good crack to it wes,i like it**
wes, i might have to call the nj. hoarding patrol. / collect old bobcats
Well is this the surprise you were talking about in the state owned ground video ???
All 2 cylinder JD Diesels had a fuel gauge.
.......just what you need.. another tractor.. Sure is loud!
hi. wes. my. dad. had. farmall. m. i. liked. it.
Where at in Ohio did the red tractor come from?
The pony will re-start better the next time if you turn off the gas to kill it, if yiu use the kill switch it is prone to flood.
Is that an F1 pony motor?? Sucker sounds like it's revving around 5K or more.
good to. have
John Deere Tractor hoarder is ye ;) Nice new toy :)
Pony engine is rated to run at 5500 rpm in these tractors.
I like it!!
I think the 720 diesel won awards for fuel economy and took till the 80's to be beatin by another deere on horsepower hrs/gallon
Whatever happened to that little John Deere G you got?
Well are we talking about the Farmall or the John Deere?
Cool 720
Do all 720's have that small "pony" motor?
The fuel gauge wont work until you start the tractor
21 tractors is the tally now. My God Wes
the standerds in the 20 series and on had lift arms
the old farmalls start on gas then run on diesel that is why there is a carborator
Nice!
they could not make a starter so they put another engine ??? to start it ?
datguy807 500+ cubic inches of displacement in two cylinders
New holland v johndeer
Thank you.
get a 720 HD camera ! :)
good job romania health
Ok, you gotta make a video out of the pony start FAIL that you cut out of this one.
Just like a kid with a new toy isn't he. lol
your welcome.
every time you get a tractor you make a bunch of videos about the new tractor, which in turn helps pay for...another new tractor. i see what you're doing here.
Be a real pain in the but if up you stall it
I told you what you wanted to know. Tis your own problem now.
if the 720 STANDARD has serial # 7225157 I want to buy it
