      beatmaps are saved in the installation folder of the editor. in steam you can right click on the app in the list > properties > local files > browse and in the folder it opens there should be one that says CustomSongs, your map file will be in there

    Thanks for this. My wife and I recently got into this game, and I'm excited to try my hand at creating custom maps. It's a bit daunting at this point, so many bits, but this video is a great help. (And by the way, your custom maps are the best we've found. Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels is a blast.)

    If you're someone who is thinking of using this software, consider the following:
    There's benefit to easier songs that are more fun than challenging. Expert level tracks are nice, but I'm not really great at dancing and I just like moving to music. It's a huge bummer every time I find a song I love that wants me to flip myself backwards and jump around my room. Maybe after the expert version is done, go back and cut out some of the sections that might require me to dance while facing backwards (I swear some tracks only make sense to me if the creator wanted me to turn around for entire segments), and you've got a fun regular-hard-mode track that's challenging but still accessible, and fun to play.

      I know this is an old comment, but I personally feel like rhythm games are meant to be fun, not about getting super high scores, so there's no shame whatsoever in turning on no-fail mode. Some maps will still be a bit unfun for being too difficult, but it lets me play some really really fun maps without having to worry about bouncing off of walls to not fail them.

    Absolutely amazing tutorial! It helped so much and I am having a blast making maps! The only question I still have is how are some mappers adding square and triangle shapes (they seem to be barriers) to their maps? Is it some sort of mod or is this possible in the base game?

      it is a feature of the beta editor on steam, there are quite a few quality of life updates in the beta as well:
      To opt in:
      - Open Steam and right click on the Beatmap Editor
      - Choose Properties
      - Choose Betas
      - Opt in to the "public.beta"
      beware that it is in beta so there may be bugs, if you encounter any please report them on the official discord!! :D

    Fantastic work, thanks. Coming from the animation world, I have to ask, do you ever use performance reference? I think it could be helpful. Imagine that the song plays, and you record a "sketch" of the poses you want the notes to hit, maybe triggers on your controllers emit particles like strokes, and you can bring in that "sketch" as reference into the editor to match a more natural, human-performed flow at scale. I think this is possible even with basic tracking of a video recording in after effects or a tilt brush sculpture, and just scrub that clip at the song.

    • @whattheshark7787
      @whattheshark7787  Год назад

      i have referenced dance before! speaking for myself, most of the things i map have some form of 'intended choreography'. having worked off reference and just from my own brain - i would say that working off reference, for me, is a loooot slower than just mapping freehand. people in the community have made tools in the past for tracking motion though.

      hold Z and scroll further down the timeline, when an area is selected ctrl c to copy, then when you want to paste ctrl v (or alt v to mirror paste)

  • @neutech

    Thanks for the tut but how do you copy a string of notes?

    • @whattheshark7787
      @whattheshark7787  3 года назад +1

      hold Z + scroll to select a section, then Ctrl+ C (ctrl + v to paste). if you want to copy a whole difficulty you can use Ctrl A to select all of it. if you want to copy a large section, without scrolling you can also use bookmarks (hold Z at the start of the section then continue holding it as you click a bookmark and it should create an area selection - the timeline will be highlighted). hope this helps

      @@bleukreuz you can open the copy of the synth file you have placed in the CustomSongs folder in the editor and it will save to that version. it's just the default location for new synths is inside the Editor's install directory. just be careful about having the map open while the game is also trying to read it, not sure how it handles that.

      Sure, you can download songs from a community-run website, but it doesn’t necessarily make it legal to do so. I can only talk about things from that perspective, for an official resource like this.
