  • One week ago the Taliban attacked Camp Bastion, killing two US marines. For the next four hours a series of intense firefights saw British and US forces repel the insurgents, killing 14 and capturing one. In their first television interview, RAF gunners and the RAF fire and rescue service have spoken exclusively to Forces News about the night the Taliban came calling; and the reception they gave them.

The RAF Reg, Rock Apes, Gunners- Whatever you want to call them, don't deserve the hate they get.
Yeah sure they have made some mistakes, but; Army infantry, Marines, Navy Sailors- aren't exactly saints and have also all made mistakes just a questionable through history.
    It's war, shit happens.
Yeah they may big themselves up to much by saying they are equal to marines, but some of the most arrogant cocky people I have met are from the Army who act like Action heroes.
And to be honest some of the specialist roles in the Reg are almost as advanced as something a Marine could be called out to do.
I personally wouldn't say as dangerous (although they can always be) or equal to what a Marine would do, but still specialist for a reason!
The Gunners can also join a dedicated SFSG within the Reg!
Now... the Special Forces wouldn't want people not good enough to support them would they? The Gunners are chosen for a reason.
You can call them glorified security guards but the reality is they; do some seriously important jobs, train hard, and they are a family.
No they may not; charge into battle first on a regular basis, or fight behind enemy lines, or have as many battles or kills in the line of duty, but so what?
What if some people aren't designed to kill on order, to go out with the intention to kill for a career- But prefer to rather kill if needed, to be more tactical towards combat and taking lives, to protect lives?
What if they want to be more free-minded and listened too?
What is wrong with guarding lives? Nothing.
What is wrong with taking lives? Could be a lot (Depending.)
The RAF Reg have had losses in battle- It doesn't matter if it is 1 death or 1000, they still gave their blood, and life for the country- And that makes them equal to any other armed forces in the UK.
The RAF Reg get; shot at, blown up, attacked, meet confrontation in towns (Like patrols around potential insurgent towns in the middle east).
They; are responsible for removing weapons or bombs from possible insurgents homes, have to drive multiple types of vehicle, patrol, learn multiple weapons systems, carry the same guns, go up in helicopters, get dropped in dangerous places, they are away from their families, could die, could see their brothers (or sisters) die.
You know who else does all of that?
Every other member of the Armed Forces.
You are all the same, it doesn't matter what; cap badge is worn, what uniform, division, rank- RAF, Navy or Army.
Stop being assholes to each other, I know banter is a big thing, but the things said about the Gunners is disgusting sometimes, they don't deserve to be questioned, hated or treated like lesser warriors.
    Everyone who serves is equal.

And who is on the back of that Chinook as air gunners and first out to make secure the area to evac the infantry out? And who is with every MERT flight into contact areas? Not everyone can be a frontline soldier my friend but these guys, who I served alongside, are there when you blokes need them and there when you don't even know it so show some respect. Just remember there are many RAF and Naval people right at the sharp end as well as you footsloggers.

I’m not sure the RAF Regt were air gunners in MERT? They provided FP for the medics at the pick up point and often assisted in treating casualties if the medics required an extra pair of hands but they certainly didn’t operate the aircraft or the weapons?

Of course we only have your word you ever served anywhere don't we Nigel? And your abusive and disrespectful remarks about other Servicemen and women ('rockapes') is something I have never experienced with people who have been under fire. Sort of an unwritten code of honour and respect. I didn't say they secured the whole HLS and neither could they I just said they secure the immediate area around the aircraft. Which to anyone who HAS served would be obvious. So maybe we should question YOU.

Hahahah RAF regiment, they made a mess of it.
The Taliban managed to get in, drive round attacking aircraft/Vehicles and personal, it was only due to the Army units at the camp why the attack was repelled.
They got into the biggest Camp in the country due to their negligence..............one Job 😂😂.

That's funny because I heard from a very reliable source that the RAF Reg got hammered and it was a Warrior AFV from the York's who rocked up and saved the day but the main credit was giveb to the RAF reg because they needed a win, some of the unsung heroes of this were the Fire Men.

It was a United Nations resolution with many other countries taking part and we we'rent taking their country from them, rather giving the country back to the people. The Taliban murdered a lot of their own people. In the end most of them were pacified and left alone to grow their heroin poppies. The dead didn't have to fight they wanted to because they absolutely loved it like the rest of us.
