- Welcome to Folk Food!
This is the first video in my new series where I will be exploring the folk tales and stories of this land (and lands further afield!) through food. Wisdom and tales are sewn into the food and flowers that grow here and the recipes that hands have been mixing for centuries.
In this episode we travel to Boscastle in Cornwall, the rugged coastal town where witches and pellars sold the wind to smugglers and fishermen alike. Whether trading in real magic or superstition, theirs was a booming trade - but one that came with the perils of being associated with the dark arts.
This is the story of one such local witch who finally found justice only 25 years ago.
Victory Scones Recipe (makes 4 large scones)
Handful of sweet woodruff
1/2 cup milk (plus extra to glaze the tops)
2 cups self raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 pinch of salt
1 tbsp sugar
1/4 cup cold butter
Handful of candied hibiscus
Jam
Generous handful of elderflower
Handful of blueberries
1/2 cup sugar
Cream of choice to serve
Steep the dried sweet woodruff in your milk, ideal for a minimum of 2 hours (please make sure you are confident of identification if you forage this yourself!).
In a mixing bowl add your flour, baking powder, salt, sugar and mix. Crumble your butter through and add chopped candied hibiscus. Add your milk, mix and shape. Bake on a greased pan at 220 for 15-20 minutes. To a pan ass your jam ingredients and let it summer down and thicken into a sticky jam. Again, please be confident of your elderflower identification! Serve your scones with cold cream of choice and warm jam.
Apologies to my Cornish puritans - you may notice that my scones have swung both ways - what can I say? I'm a fence sitter! I actually prefer cream first but as I am personally using cream cheese anyway its blasphemy all around!
I can’t tell you how much I love your content. I made your recipe the other night with chili and sweet potato and loved it. Unfortunately I grew up in a household where cooking was viewed as a chore as well as many other household activities, and that feeling passed on to me as an adult. Watching your content has made me want to find the magic in cooking and my home in general. I’ve been reading books about kitchen and hearth magic so that my home can feel like a cozy sanctuary and not a chore that drains my energy. Thank you so much for your videos. Want to let you know someone out there gets so much joy out of them.
This is so wonderful to hear! And thank you so much for your kind words xx
What a unique way to present your subject this time. Thank you for sharing.

We've been to Boscastle and visited the museum of witchcraft many times on holidays. Love Cornwall. Your scones look delicious!
It’s such a loverly place! And the museum is amazing
Beautiful video, thank you 😊🌿🌸
Great new vlog series, captivating both in the manner of your presentation and their content. Loved my time at Boscastle, taking an evening walk up to the watch tower. Thank you, take care now until the next time 😊
Ah thank you so much - it’s an amazing place!
Awesome
I just finished reading The Curse of Penryth Hall by Jess Armstrong. I had never heard about how the pellar is part of Cornish folklore. This was fun to listen to! Thank you
Ooooo I’m not familiar with that! The pellar is definitely an age old Cornish term with some interesting etymology that I intend to explore in another video!
Ps. Adore your top! Absolutely brilliant. Well done. Really enjoyed this. Thank you
Ah thank you!
I really loved this. Thanks for taking the time! I'm not a scone fan, but they did look delish!
Ah thank you so much!
The cinematography in this special video is sooo beautiful. You are very talented and I'm very grateful for this atmospheric, steeped-in-folklore video. Sumptuous bake too! Thank you, Laura. Many blessings to you 😋 🌱🌿
Is this why I feel so at home and relaxed in Cornwall? 😊
...and I am so glad that you had one scone each way! 😁
Probably! I feel the same!
Absolutely loved this vlog, I’ve been to the museum of witchcraft at Boscastle. I really loved it there, Cornwall is so beautiful and full of legend and history. You’ve made me feel hungry for scones, I may have to make some in the morning! X
Such an amazing place, thank you for your kind words! X
good vid on channel keep up the good vids
i truly adore your sharings
Nice 👍
Fascinating info, thanks ☺
Thank you!
Hi Laura very interesting video x
I think you should tell more stories, very interesting. 🤔
One of your best videos yet.
That means a lot thank you!!
With all the food coming out of your boat, I wish I was parked up next to you.
Man, you must have some unusual smells wafting down the tow path....
This is so interesting and so empowering.
Thank you for all your videos.
Also, those scones look mighty!
Just out of interest, which plant-based cream do you prefer?
It looks so thick and double cream-like.
Take care, x
Ah thank you so much!! So for this I actually used cream cheese (the plant based Philadelphia one) - definitely not traditional but it was really good!
Hi Laura 👋😀
lovely video. really enjoying the food and folklore. does your ink tie into this🙂
Not particularly!
Scones presented with one cream then jam, and the other jam then cream. Clearly you didn't want to touch that debate with your barge pole...
I’m a fence sitter! (I’m actually team cream first but couldn’t possibly do that alone jn a Cornish video)
I love having one each way - I try to show that it doesn't matter, as it all goes down the same way! 😊 (And there is a chance that I may be annoying someone... 😁)
Hey laura, I'm looking for a birthday pressie for my wife and struggling to find a decent mini broom to buy. Did you just make your own?
Hello Laura do you get lonely living solo on a narrow boat
