Is there any options to turn on/off USB controls? AND have you tried running it through a powered hub? maybe there's just not enough juice going to it.
Larry Bundy Jr Havent tried a powered hub but will try today. There is no option for controllers to turn on or off. With the branded controls it takes control over the on board controls if using p1 port, onboard would be p2 if you didnt have a p2 controller plugged into p2 side. Same thing if p2 side had a controller plugged in, onboard would stay p1 if no control plugged in on p1 side.
Madlittlepixel I love your show but I think that you would need not to use an adapter for micro USB to USBC I don't think that dongle will ever work but if you had a USBC if you like build your own harness then you can control exactly the button layout this coming out of the USB c and a plug it into the system itself I'm not an engineer I just thought of that I just love video games so that's how my mind runs like ramp it hope that helps and hope somebody can come up with something like that and then we can get around purchasing those type of expensive controllers and we can use the ones that we have that we can plug USB

Oh you know the folks at Hakchi are probably working on this! But I've been hearing all around that other controllers just don't work. I wonder why they bothered putting that lockout in there? It just doesn't make sense.
The controllers are available for purchase on Amazon for $25, I just bought mine this morning, go now and get it. The International NEO GEO is also available again for preorder.
I'm thinking that if someone came up with some kind of adapter, similar to the Breek Super Converters for the main consoles and the like, this could easily be accomplished. The question is, would there ever be enough of a market to warrant something like that? Personally, from what I see from this unit, I'm currently not all that interested in it. I like the design and I love the nostalgia of SNK and the old Neo games, but there's too many more convenient ways to play these games ATM. Even so, my interest might pick up if they made it easier/more affordable to play these games like I want to. Congrats on the inevitable 20,000 subscribers, dude. You deserve it.
@@Interstate_78 Yes but it's not the same. Playing it on such a small screen isn't really enjoyable, and I've heard many complaints that even the video out is poor quality. They could've just gave us an AES mini like the SNES classic with regular HDMI out, and 2 controllers. It would've been way more worth it.
I bought a Neo Geo Gold System on launch day, (my EB only had Baseball Stars bundle) point I’m making is if they sold this with the 2 controllers included, I would’ve put the money up to preorder the mini. It’s their fault I don’t own this, I’m not taking the blame here :P
Is the international version of the neo geo mini (snk 40th anniversary) censored? Metal slug for example I heard that they replace red blood with non red blood. Just curious before I buy the device. Was looking at the console at my local retro game store. Thanks !
It is not a proprietary connection. It is just the connection protocol used. You have almost covered all your bases. 360 for windows, standard USB fight stick for your X input type, and The NGX stick used direct input protocol. Only other one I would check is a generic USB. "SNES" controller for good measure. But as I said before... If it uses a proprietary protocol the your are just up a creek.

Cool, I believe it has to be an actual usb-c controller, they have change the usual pins that everyone uses for controllers so that you have to buy their crappy neogeo-cd type controllers.
I’m wondering if the problem might be the use of the USB-C adapter itself. You are getting a signal with your Xbox and 8BitDo Controllers so maybe a Micro-USB to USB-C cable might be better instead. (A direct connection from controller to mini-console.)
On my neo geo x, the only external other controller I can get to work is the Xbox 360 rock candy controller, the regular version (same as in this video) doesn't work but the rock candy one does. May be worth trying out if you have one laying around.

They really missed a trick with not making it compatible with USB controllers Or maybe they planned that to sell those naff feeling NGCD style pads, it seems the only way to make them work would be to crack them open and hard sodler the connections Damn it SNK, why did you have to cut costs on the stick/D-Pad, people like me would of gotten it if it was decent

Can you try one of the Power A wired Nintendo Switch controllers? They’re natively wired and USB. The Switch also supports USB C. I won’t be able to test until my Japanese mini is delivered sometime next month.
Try using controllers that doesn't rely on the USB Type-C adapter, something like a Switch Pro Controller or an 8Bitdo SN30 Pro controller, those had a USB Type-C wire that could easily hook up to the device. My guess is that the USB Type-C adapter being inserted into that device made the device unable in recognizing the connection so when it doesn't recognize the connection, it just does what all USB Type-C port are meant to do and charge the battery only.
Now one thing I wonder is if maybe the controller ports don't work unless you are hooked up to the T.V. through HDMI. Maybe redo your test, but have the system hooked up to the T.V. and see if it works then. It's a long shot, but at least it will cover another possibility on why other controllers don't work on it.

Hopefully somebody will take apart a official controller and find out what makes it work vs third party. I assume it's some quirky driver that's not proper XInput or Direct Input.
Prime-1 I didnt think of that, but from what I understand the branded controllers take control over the inputs on the unit for player 1, the unit if only 1 controller would be player 2. But I will still try that out in the morning and report back.

This makes me wonder if using a neogeo mini pad with a converter would work on a neogeo x. I doubt it but because the X is hacked to shit it may be possible to hack the system more to recognize one.
I think xbox controllers need drivers installed and the 8bitdo is only bluetooth and I think the usb is only used for charging. I would try like an ibuffalo controller.

Man, this thing is not worth spending any extra money on. Soft image, lack of variety games wise, a built-in analog stick (!!). It looks like SNK looked at what Nintendo has done with their excellent mini consoles and did the exact opposite.

It just seems like these classic plug and play systems are always missing something. It’s a shame.
Have you tried using the built in stick and buttons to select the game, and THEN try to use 3rd party to play?

Its a shame the official pads for this thing are still impossible to find in stores. I've only seen listing for marked up pads on Ebay.

USB 3.0 vs 2.0 cable, I’m also wondering if that is a factor as well.

Try a usb keyboard if that works you could wire up a teensy arduino hooked up to Sanwa sticks

Hopefully it should be a simple fix of patching and reflashing a custom kernel...
Did you try to boot up a rom first ? The option menu might only be controlled by the unit itself.

Try holding the X (home) on the 360 until it find's Player One, the one light, might help, what about a Bluetooth dongle from that c-type adaptor ?
Jaz808 another person reccomended holding the home button as well.. I tried it and nothing. Ill try something with a Bluetooth dongle tomorrow.
More likely (c-type) usb is a "Non Standard" to their encoder, as you say if connected more likely nothing is configured, good luck man

Whats a RetroPie controller, or what specifically do you mean? The controllers I tested are all the main ones I use on RetroPie.
