The fading out of the choir at the end is meant to represent the infinite nature of the space beyond Neptune. It always makes me think of the path of the Voyager probe as it left behind our solar system.
This movement has always baffled me. It is so nebulous, so foreign, and so strangely beautiful and captivating. No other music - not even the famous Ligeti pieces used in 2001: A Space Odyssey - quite as accurately captures the mystery and uncertainty of deep space. It's almost as though Holst's music itself was brought to us from a different planet.
My favorite part is the 15 seconds at 3:45 where the organ bass pedal and celesta are so many octaves apart but work beautifully. That almost infrasound bass adds to the awe of this piece. I’m sure in person it resonates in your bones!
This is my favorite of The Planets by far but {1:48-4:10} sends me into an outer worldly trance every time I hear that section. I also love when the choir comes in.
What a perfect performance! I love the organ pedal as it approaches infrasound and adds awe and mystique to this piece. That and the choir gives me goosebumps every time!
Once described by a music critic as 'As for Neptune nothing like it exists in British classical music. All atmosphere, one of the most awe inspiring imitations of the infinite ever registered'.
Yes. That combined with that pianissimo bass drum hit always felt to me like a deep breath before plunging further into the infinite. A musical "Here we gooo!" Makes something happen to my eyes every time.
@IsraelSilvaOficial its the celesta. you can tell its not a harpsichord because when it is played you hear a metallic ringing, something similar to the glockenspiel, and not the signature plucking of the harpsichord.
Superb music throughout the Suite. A treasure. Why could it not be presented as an entity rather than the 7 sections scattered among the various other listings from Proms programs?
There is a BBC vid out there somewhere, this is not it, where we saw the chorus walk off the stage as it is supposed to do. Saw it on Classic Arts Showcase,
The female choir would just suddenly 'be', like they appear out of nowhere, as if they had been hidden from hearing or woven unheard into the music itself. If one would listen it with eyes closed, it would confuse the first-time listener. I did.
Muy buena performance, pero pienso que la mejor interpretación fue la de la Filarmonica de New York, version beta, conducida por el magnífico y mejor director de todos los tiempos Leonard Berstein
Holst : The Bringer Of Movie Soundtracks

This is pure GENIUS! The composition is phenomenal. Bravo to the conductor and the musicians.
This is the best performance of Neptune I've ever heard!
Like a definitive guidebook to 20th century film scoring. Amazing how much composers like Bernard Herrman and John Williams owe to Holst.
This final singing is awesomeness.
Beautiful and haunting... This orchestra did one of the best live performances of the Planets.
This is my favorite of The Planets by far but {1:48-4:10} sends me into an outer worldly trance every time I hear that section. I also love when the choir comes in.
I love this suite and this is the one of the best performances I have heard of it 8) wish I was there 8(
My favorite interpretation of this work lately
What a perfect performance! I love the organ pedal as it approaches infrasound and adds awe and mystique to this piece. That and the choir gives me goosebumps every time!
The choral part is great! Holst = Genius!
Awesome and ethereal.
By far my favorite piece from the planets
Éste es unos de mis videos favoritos qué tengo en RUclips, lo veo casi todos los días... Muchas gracias por subirlo a RUclips...
The women's voices just seem to float in from the ether - like other-worldly presences.
Once described by a music critic as 'As for Neptune nothing like it exists in British classical music. All atmosphere, one of the most awe inspiring imitations of the infinite ever registered'.
Finally, a version that has the Celesta higher in the mix. Thank you!
I love the part at 3:45 when the organ pedal comes in. The sound coming from the 16 and 32 foot pipes blend amazingly with that section.
Yes. That combined with that pianissimo bass drum hit always felt to me like a deep breath before plunging further into the infinite. A musical "Here we gooo!" Makes something happen to my eyes every time.
One of my all-time favorites, very well-done here.
This will always be the greatest performance of The Planets
I love how you can't see the choir. So ethereal.
Fantastic!
Absolutely spine tingling
Beautiful piece my favorite from holst. Such a shame about the audience hacking and coughing.
So far ahead of his time was Holst.
I'd love to be able to hear this one at the actual Proms and experience the ethereal sound of the women's choir literally fading out into space.
For me the planets are overwhelming at points. Holst is such an inspiration to me.
Sublime!

So this is what is sounds like just beyond Uranus.
*uranus*
This is like listening to angels in heaven. I know that sounds cheesy, but I'm 100% serious in saying that.
Daniel Smolko what do you mean by that?
this was the last piece until Collin Mattews added Pluto, The Redeemer
being a double Pisces I love Neptune adrift in waves of mystical visions and poetic ecstasies
4:30 5:10 6:20 Listening to Siren's song; feeling like being HOOKED by irresistible/addictive magic~
Neptune. The planet of visions dreams ethereal transcendence, marijuana, intoxication,
art and music
Superb music throughout the Suite. A treasure. Why could it not be presented as an entity rather than the 7 sections scattered among the various other listings from Proms programs?
Because Proms.
I agree with you totally
There is a BBC vid out there somewhere, this is not it, where we saw the chorus walk off the stage as it is supposed to do. Saw it on Classic Arts Showcase,
0:13 the eyes tho lol
When the spider dissapears
Peace!
Chanson mystère et mythiques j'ai aimé la première fois que je l'ai écouté mystique comme Erik Satie
I love the harp at 1:45
4:03- the bowing reminds me of jelly fish somehow
The female choir would just suddenly 'be', like they appear out of nowhere, as if they had been hidden from hearing or woven unheard into the music itself. If one would listen it with eyes closed, it would confuse the first-time listener. I did.
In its own way, as groundbreaking as Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps.
4:24 Choir excerpt
oh!planets`~
Arrg -- too fast from 4:10...
Also, did Holst ever meet Bartok..?
OMG very nice music im a music teacher
@IsraelSilvaOficial: Do you mean the celesta?
@dauiske79
The animal, not the band, right?
This is in Apollo 13
DAT PICCOLO
Fantástico, una delicia, aunque imposible de superar la grabación de Von Karajan con la Filarmónica de Viena de 1962.
@IsraelSilvaOficial harpsicord

Rafael Vangelis what language is this?
• satansangel • Try Spanish.
JUST JOKING
the person playing the piccolo is creepy
thats a relatively fast Neptune but none the worse for that
Not bad but I felt like this piece was too rushed for me.
