- There's nothing like shooting an old nifty-fifty, so when I saw this Pentax 50mm f/2 up for sale for $10, I had to snap it up. I decided to review it by taking it with me to Malaysia for a holiday, this is the result!

Nice review and some really nice pics! picked one up today, keen to give it some use!
I know I am biased, but Pentax-M and Canon nFDs are the most consistent lines of vintage lenses I've tried. The zooms are a bit behind, but the primes always deliver great results!
Nikkor, Canon and Konica for me. If I were rich, I would just give you my dozen Pentax lenses (alas, I work slave labor)
Using this Pentax, I can definitely see why they were so popular back in the day. Really nice lens.
I haven't tired enough Konicas but, yes, they're very consistent!@@classic.cameras
Pentax M are dirty cheap and compact too.
The Pentax and Takumar vintage lens are fantastic!
I serviced many samples of this lens and what impresses is how thin the glass elements are and there is just 5 of them. If you realize that less glass is better, Pentax did a masterful job designing this entry level lens. The design and mechanics of this F2 is fantastic, helicoids and apertures run reliably smooth after 40+ years of use. Of all entry level nifty 50s, this one ranks HIGH in my book.
Absolutely. A very high quality lens in all aspects.
The Pentax A series came about 5 years AFTER the M series, and, in general, that's the series that added in more plastic construction.
That was the same with Canon FDn Lenses, but optical Lens quality was better then older models for both Canon and Pentax with the new Lenses !
The best ever analog SLR 50mm Lens are the Contax Zeiss Planar 50mm 1.7 T*, second are the Canon FDn 50mm 1.4 !
I have two of the M 50mm f/1.7 lenses. Both in excellent shape. It's funny how people get confused with lens nomenclature. This post is about the F/2 lens, not the F/1.2. That lens would would cost a lot more than $10! It would be around $300 on ebay!
I used two pentax 50 1.7 s both behave exactly the same which is nice. Cant say the same for my fuji lenses
You can pair this with a 28mm f2, 35mm f2, and 85mm f2....all smc and all M series. Then, with some simmod front rings and some tilta seamless rings you have a cinemoded f2 lens kit with outstanding IQ and matching, for around $650.
Two versions. There is the Metal and Plastic F Stop ring. The Metal are obviously the older.
Yeah, going off the (old) barcode on mine, I think this one's from the late 80's.
Easy to tell. One is plastic and the other is metal. Not much difference in optics. @@SovietLensReviews
I own plenty of M series Pentax , this F2 is so so...not bad but not great either, its just CHEAP.The 50 f1.7 is far superior(I have 3 copies) as is the F1.4 which lots swear by but I dont think its worth the extra over the F1.7.
My next kit would be a M f2 series....definitely I'll go for the f1.7 in the 50mm
😊
