It's funny how much the perception of Russia differs from one fan to another and from country to country. First of all, as a Russian myself I've had close contacts with the Russian fandom and used to be friends with many Russian hetalians. There are two positions: Russians either despise him or adore him, no in-between. For multiple reasons. Also the fandom image of Russia is so OOC but it's rooted so deep into the fandom that people forget what his canon personality is. Russia is manipulative and creepy but also naive and childish and honestly kinda cute. Screw that, said the fandom, let's make him the most depressed edgelord in history, let's make him swear every five seconds and be gloomy and hate his life and everyone in it. I understand that his canon creepy cute yandere personality is perfect for comedy but not really fitting for anything more serious so adding that OOC part when you absolutely can't avoud it makes sense. The thing is, his personality matches Russia as a country the way it is seen in the world right now but Russian people are very different so he's kinda inaccurate.

What do you think about the polar opposite version of Russia? If it isn't edgelord Russia, he's a cute little baby that is so soft, sensitive and throws tantrums often. I don't even know why, but whenever I see fanmade stuff about Russia, especially today, he's often that not portrayed like that. Childish Russia IS canon an, like you said, kinda cute, but there's so many people in the fandom who take that to the max and absolutely baby him for some sick reason.
I think the reason why Hima made the Philippines male is that the nation itself was named after King Philip. Though I get why and many others are upset with his decision.
Another reason why I think Hima went with a male Philippines instead of a female one is because if you search Philippine personification, the name that usually pops up is Juan dela Cruz, which is a male name I mean there was a female equivalent which was Maria dela Cruz but the male one appears more often than the female one when you search it up

I like to think because of how awkward the history is. Hima does avoid deeper history because _hahah happy world peace yay_ but if Philippines was a girl, then we'd have lots of problems with wrapping without the w and extra p. I like him as a guy more, especially because people have less reasons to make him a Mary/Gary Sue (Hopefully...). I'm from the country itself, and every Filipino making a Philippines OC that's sooo cute and quirky, like wow, okay, you're a girl, of course the world belongs to you. _It makes me so disappointed that I want to move to Sealand._ But go pop off, I guess. @@TrademarkedIPAdress I see it as a good thing that Hima avoids the deeper underbelly of history and not show it on Hetalia, because the show is known for inaccurate and stereotypical portrayals of countries and the oversimplification of history. And it's not supposed to be an accurate history book of some sort. I really love the Hetalia now, but if one wants a more accurate version of it, they have to remove the charm of the characters and everything. Personally, it's best to keep history in stuff like documentaries and history classes, where making an anime of it isn't needed. And yeah, I have seen a few other Pinoys say that if PH was a girl, then it'll be a bad idea because of the things that happened to women in our history, particularly WW2. So far, I don't see anyone portray PH as a Mary Sue or Gary Stu, so that's cool. I used to like the whole "Piri is a cute girl who gets shipped by everyone and needs someone to rescue her" portrayal of the fandom's Philippines OC, but as the years passed by, I start to dislike that portrayal. I feel like the fandom could've done better ay making a female Philippines, but I guess more research needs to be done? I also wanna say this: me being attracted to dudes plays a part as to why I want HWS PH to be a guy lmao. (And on Twitter, I don't see a lot of Filipinos complain about PH being a guy. But I guess that's because majority of the Hetalians that I follow really loves the official Piri, so that's cool too. Also, you reminded me of that one time Hima posted a sketch of an unknwon female character and people thought it was Piri. 4:10 The way I see it, Ukraine as a PERSON feels a deep bond with Russia because they met when they were so little and they considered each other siblings. She has fond memories of Ivan and wishes they could all be family and close like things used to be (Russia also shows this sentiment from time to time). As Nations, however, they aren't supposed to be on as good terms. Katya was shown having been advised by her boss not to see Ivan and she expresses sorrow for this, because she misses being close to him as a person regardless of politics. Watching those anime episodes nowdays after the war started surely feels bitter, but I do believe it didn't actually age like milk, I've always thought what Himaruya was trying to convey there was their feelings as human beings and not as puppets by their respective governments. Hetalia characters always have their own personality, feelings and wishes that don't necessarily overlap with their people's average or their government's wishes. Germany not being a fervid Nazi during WW2 despite being forced to follow orders should've proven that enough.
As a portuguese I would like a lot more if Portugal was a woman, specifically because like ... PORTUGAL IN HETALIA IS JUST A CLONE OF SPAIN, but also because the Portuguese Republic in portuguese is female like the "gender of the words" is female and it would be really interesting to have another female character(also forgot to mention that the capital is always refered by the locals as a woman, THERE IS LITERALLY A SONG ABOUT IT("Lisboa menina e moça" for the curious)). Unpopular opinion: Hima was right about making Ireland as a male instead of a female. If Ireland was a female character we would have got 1849021 fanfics about how Ireland got pregnant of England and how Northern Ireland was born, we already had a few fics where England was like very bad with Ireland, can't mention here cause its sensitive topics when he wasn't even canon, so now that he is canon, I'm glad he is a male, I think you guys dont realize the AMOINT of England x Ireland or Scotland x Ireland if Ireland was a female so it's a big no for me. Philippines, Ireland, and Portugal is quite a troublesome in History if those characters happens to be female. Especially with the Philippines because of the treacherous history with Spain, America, and Japan. Are you aware of the consequence of the shipping controversy that may be tied with History? Himaruya with the given credit that took so long is because he wants to prevent a "Korea Controversy Scandal" where ironically Korea was omitted in the Anime. Many Filipinos who i know do not give a DAMN if the country was portrayed as a Man as long as the history is not inaccurate, lately in the country has been struggling with History Inaccuracy and History Revisionism for decades now. Also the country was named after a King of Spain. For Ireland, it is also again with history that may be more troublesome with England with England's wrongdoing with banning of Ireland's Culture and Language which messes up that not all Irish People speak Irish as their Main Language apart from English. Portugal also ties with History too with Spain Again i could go on, but given where credit is due to Himaruya, he does take time to do research with History and not to offend a lot People. Sometimes a Female character is not suited due to insensitive History and depiction of stereotypes. Korea is not in the anime, isn't it that not enough? i ain't sexist but i wish some characters were female too like Poland, Croatia, or Romania for example. There's a saying goes "This is why we can't have nice things!"
Well I may sound biased, but Hima is japanese after all so it's expected he'd favorize his own country over the others on way or another. We all would've if we were the authors tbh, but agree he should pay more attention around the world. I like the prefectures being characters tho cause I'd love more fanarts of the countries having land parts as their own characters (mainly in fan content, I just like that it's possible).
12:00 Poland didn't disappear for the same reason why Italy somehow existed through all the centuries when Italy as an actual Nation didn't exist, and the strip you showed at 12:07 implies this very well: this strip is about the raise of Patriotic sentiment in the 1800s, which was a big factor in why the multi-ethnic Austro-Hungarian Empire eventually crumbled from the inside. Hetalia Personifications are mostly not linked to whether an Independent government exists or not, but to whether they have people who recognize themselves as part of a set of traditions/cultures/language/history and perceive themselves as 'something else' compared to all other existing Nations. Poland disappeared as an independent Country, but Poles did not. Much like Italians, being ruled by foreign Nations only made their patriotic sentiment burn more strongly, which allowed their Heta-Self to survive.
Yeah, and Lithuania was partitioned too, yet no one sees it as weird that Russia just dragged him to his own house in the series and Liet didn't die as well... I imagine that either Poland as a character was living with Prussia/Russia/Austria, or had to do chores for them (idk, in turns?), or he escaped to France/Britain, like Polish elites did and came back for a while with Napoleon, then was back under Russia's rule etc. Like, Baltic states were seen as living with others, long before any independent sort of gov was established there and it was seen as ok to have them in scenes related to Poland-Lithuanian wars with Sweden and his gang, so I hardly think it weird that Poland didn't just die after partitioning (also some countries didn't recognise that, like Turkey, so that's more ambiguous).
At this point I just have decided that the whole regions are body parts aspect of Hetalia isn't canon and hasn't been for almost a decade. It was never a good edition to the series to begin with. Wasn't one of the first instances of this Hima making Corsica Italy's nipple? And he only did that just to have France molest Italy. Nevermind the fact Corsica is a part of France today so does that mean France owns Italy's nipple? Probably. It wasn't funny in 2007 and its not funny now. This lore can die, give me region personifications instead.
Your opinion on Russia is sad, but valid. Even though I joined the fandom pretty late, I knew he was a controversial character. Lots of reasons to love him, but also lots of reasons to hate him. He's always been kind of hard for me to define, especially because his actions and behaviors contradict his thoughts and intentions many times. A seemingly deliberate writing choice, but one that I'm not sure Hima has executed that well. I like Spain and generally think he's funny, but he's not much of a favorite of mine. The Romano stuff is a pretty big reason why, but I also think his personality is kinda boring lol I completely agree with you on the Ancient Nations. Their designs are so cool, but I could not care less about them. All that aside, your dedication to the series has always been admirable. I consider myself an avid fan of the anime, but have admittedly not even caught up to the most recent season. I don't even read the manga. Meanwhile you're like the Hetalia encyclopedia lmao. It helps that you also draw upon your own historical knowledge and worldly experiences.

With Poland I'm also angry that the WHOLE HISTORY WITH PRUSSIA WAS SCRAPED Like, this really is friends to enemies scenario (maybe Prussia being even jealous of Lithuania hanging out with Poland) and it wasn't even mentioned, Grunwald was a joke I heard that Hima later mentioned on his blog that he wished he did something woth Prussia and Poland, yet nothing came out for it
The points you made about some countries, especially Egypt and Cyprus, make me think of how probably not having official post-Yugoslavia countries + Albania may actually be a blessing in disguise, as I fear they could be made into something basic like these poor guys... Egypt and Turkey would probably be your typical loud salesmen guys next to which Denmark looks like a calm person, and Cyprus would be just as intense as Greece about his excavations and history and would boast about it quite often (and for a good reason). I'm not from either of these countries, I'm just reading about their history and people, that's the idea I'm getting from what I've heard and seen so far.
2:11 The heights Hima released recently are supposedly the ones they have in current times. 140 cm was the height Latvia was mentioned to have under the Soviet Union and he did mention that he should be 10 cm taller but his height was compromised by Russia constantly pushing down on his head. Since now the USSR is no more and Latvia is an independent Country, it only makes sense that Hima made him 15 cm taller (155cm). The fact that some of their heights changed from the 20th to the 21st Century based on historical events is furtherly proven by the strip where Romano notices that Italy grew taller than him despite being shorter during WW2. Hetalia characters' heights aren't simply based on average height in their Country, it's also (if not mostly) based on their history, geopolitical behavior and economy.
I agree with you on a lot of these! I also kind of fell out of love with Russia over time, though I don't really know why. I also just don't really like Spain or the Ancients. The implications of canon personified Japanese prefectures confuse me (especially as a state OC creator). And oh lord what the hell was Hima thinking when he made Picardy??? I once downloaded a countryhumans dating sim for shits and giggles and was expecting to laugh at it but I ended up actually kind of...liking a lot of the characterization??? Sometimes even more than the characterization in Hetalia??? Like the game's Finland and Sweden were quite different (much closer to the swapped-Hetalia personalities you mention at 1:06), I liked the Finland-Sweden and Poland-Lithuania dynamics (Lithuania is a badass buff gal which the Hetalia fandom would go WILD for), there was a great PolHun BrOTP going on, and I ended up going for the Poland route because I loved him in the game. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I honestly wish some of the canon Hetalia characters were more like the characters in the countryhumans dating sim.

Prussia: He acts like a militaristic Bavaria. I want to see Hardass Soldier Brother Prussia. He should be the REASON Germany is the way he is. Also why is he still alive? Why is he East Germany? He makes so little sense! Finland: I understand why you’re like this. Japanese people think of Finland as the land of Moomins and cozy furniture. I know this. I’m Japanese. But wow what missed opportunity. Philippines: Why are you male? HRE: The HRE was way more interesting than just an orbiter simp of Italy. For one, there’s a REASON they wanted Italy so much. It thought of itself as literally Rome reborn. Making HRE/Chibitalia _very_ awkward. Also where is his juicy rivalry with Eastern Rome? Swedes aren’t stereotyped as scary. I know about the Swedish Empire, but… Having a big scary Empire wasn’t limited to Sweden. Also why the obsession with Finland? He should have a similar dynamic with Finland as Spain and Romano, where Sweden raised him. Iceland: The national catchphrase is literally “It will sort itself out!”. And then we have this angsty boi. …??? And his clothing annoys me. Iceland had no concept of formalities until recently. He should be wearing a sweater or something. Estonia: Why is he a self-insert? He’s another one who should be portrayed as stoic. A deadpan character who the wackier characters can bounce off of. Instead we’ve got Mr. Self-Insert. Sigh. His lost potential crashes into Liet as well; they could have had a terrible friendship breakup due to the circumstances that erupted into the Polish-Lithuanian War, but we don’t get that drama. I mean, why else would Romano still exist? Korea… Imo there’s tons of potential with two Koreas you could do but I’m pretty sure Hima wouldn’t have done it justice. Awww but I like the ancients- Also man the prefectures annoy me too. None of them except for Okinawa should exist. Japan is a unitary state. I’d understand federal states having their pieces personified. Unitary ones though??? Okinawa is fine because she used to be a kingdom, but the others… Yeah no. I ignore them. Also since you put importance in lore, I’m surprised Prussia isn’t on here. Like why is he still alive? He existed as a German state for a while, which again raises the question of whether pieces of countries are personified or not. Then he became East Germany because… Why? No seriously, why? Other than him being too popular to kill off? There is no continuity between Prussia and East Germany, except for Brandenburg being in it.

As a Greek i don't like how in Hetalia , Greece is portrayed as quiet and mostly sleeping or being sleepy. We are energetic people and love having fun. It would be better if he was kind of party animal. And it is sad that we never saw any interaction between Greece and Italy, since the two Nations have lots of things in common. We only see Greece interacting with Turkey and Japan. He should interact with more people.

There was also a missed opportunity to give Italy and Greece similar faces, because “Una faccia, una razza”. Well there was that one time France and Greece interacted… No mention of their close relationship though. Sigh. It’s been years and no Greece and Italy interaction. For some reason.
And I never understood why Greece is Hetalia is so close with Japan, while actually Japan is closer with Turkey. Also many past Giripan fanworks would make Turkey , unlikeable on purpose, so Japan would reject the "bad guy" Turkey in favour of the "good guy" Greece. And I never got it why Himaruya made Greece being so obsessed with cats. I know there are lots of stray cats on many Greek roads but we don't get crazy about them.
3:45 Honestly.... you can put Belarus on the same page as well, a century old spoiled milk on her part. Because of the severe censorships not a lot is heard about Belarus like Ukraine but there have been major conflicts regarding their leader and to an extent Russia (because it butts in) mostly in 2020 and the sentiment likely didn't fade due to the amount of violence that ensued from it. So unless the opinions of corrupt leaders matter more than the dozens of citizens, current aph Belarus is not an accurate representation of her country, like at all, she only shares the name. Also I think Egypt should've remained with brown eyes or turn them amber, too many characters with green eyes lately. Cyprus's hairstyle is a crime and he looks like a kid's first oc. Also as an artist I can kinda see why this dude has no fanarts, he's too plain looking. Hima should redesign him idc that he already appeared in the anime like this, no one will remember.
Russia used to be my favorite character in 2012 when I was obsessed with Hetalia. Looking at the anime now, Russia's cannon is way more like the country of Ukraine. The national Ukrainian flower is the sunflower, When attacked Ukrainians stayed and fought and kicked Russia's ass. No way in hell is Ukraine sad and whiney like the character is shown in the anime. The character of Ukraine is just an excuse to put big boobs on a character. Belarus's character more fits the country of Russia because no way is the country of Russia scared of Belarus. It's the other way around.
The way I see it if their designs should switch with each other, I think it fits better if aphRussia was Belarus and aphBelarus was Russia. And honestly double win cause it would've fit with the "mother Russia" memes if he were female.

I don't know why, but a lot of the characters from Hetalia I tend to not really care about the female characters. I'm a girl myself and I don't why, but when it comes to female characters from any show, I tend to favor the male ones over them. Does anybody know the reason for this?
I think its because aside from Belarus, most of the female characters just are not allowed to be as dynamic as the male characters. A lot of the male characters oscilate between being jerks, to being loyal supportive friends, to being dumb, to being smart. They are a lot of things. The women however are usually just nice. They aren't loud. They are usually very feminine. Even if they are tough they are still very feminine. Their accomplishments are often just told to us and not shown. They don't get to be more. Its in its own way, a form of sexism.

Actually both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have been shown and both of them are male, both being described as England's older brothers alongside Scotland and Wales

England wanted to be the main representative of the UK (he's often referred to as Britain for a reason) so they made an agreement, they let him represent all 4 brothers in international relations and he accepts that he's the youngest of them and lets them call him their little brother. Northern Ireland was introduced too and actually there was a huge chaos with him because canon Northern Ireland is basically fanon Scotland and canon Scotland was fanon Northern Ireland. Many people got mad at it because canon Northern ireland was supposed to be canon Scotland, because the only one with red hair was supposed to be Scotland instead of the brunette whim the fandom thought for many years it was Northern Ireland. Ireland was introduced like 2 months later in and even interacted with the rest of the UK brothers, there is a panel of Ireland and North together, so both of them are make characters
So, the funny thing is i will change their personalities so much. Like, take Russia for example. My headcannon is that, yes he is manipulative to some degree but he doesn't know that he's doing it. He has the mind of a child but can understand deeper things and can be kind. I do not listen to cannon because you do that. I keep their genders but change their personalities. And yes i care about the Anicents. (i'm a history nut)
I think Cyprus would be more interesting if Himaruya added the past of Cyprus and TRNC. But that would cause conflicts between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

It's funny how much the perception of Russia differs from one fan to another and from country to country. First of all, as a Russian myself I've had close contacts with the Russian fandom and used to be friends with many Russian hetalians. There are two positions: Russians either despise him or adore him, no in-between. For multiple reasons. Also the fandom image of Russia is so OOC but it's rooted so deep into the fandom that people forget what his canon personality is. Russia is manipulative and creepy but also naive and childish and honestly kinda cute. Screw that, said the fandom, let's make him the most depressed edgelord in history, let's make him swear every five seconds and be gloomy and hate his life and everyone in it. I understand that his canon creepy cute yandere personality is perfect for comedy but not really fitting for anything more serious so adding that OOC part when you absolutely can't avoud it makes sense. The thing is, his personality matches Russia as a country the way it is seen in the world right now but Russian people are very different so he's kinda inaccurate.

What do you think about the polar opposite version of Russia? If it isn't edgelord Russia, he's a cute little baby that is so soft, sensitive and throws tantrums often. I don't even know why, but whenever I see fanmade stuff about Russia, especially today, he's often that not portrayed like that. Childish Russia IS canon an, like you said, kinda cute, but there's so many people in the fandom who take that to the max and absolutely baby him for some sick reason.

I think the reason why Hima made the Philippines male is that the nation itself was named after King Philip. Though I get why and many others are upset with his decision.
Another reason why I think Hima went with a male Philippines instead of a female one is because if you search Philippine personification, the name that usually pops up is Juan dela Cruz, which is a male name I mean there was a female equivalent which was Maria dela Cruz but the male one appears more often than the female one when you search it up

I like to think because of how awkward the history is. Hima does avoid deeper history because _hahah happy world peace yay_ but if Philippines was a girl, then we'd have lots of problems with wrapping without the w and extra p. I like him as a guy more, especially because people have less reasons to make him a Mary/Gary Sue (Hopefully...). I'm from the country itself, and every Filipino making a Philippines OC that's sooo cute and quirky, like wow, okay, you're a girl, of course the world belongs to you. _It makes me so disappointed that I want to move to Sealand._

@@TrademarkedIPAdress I see it as a good thing that Hima avoids the deeper underbelly of history and not show it on Hetalia, because the show is known for inaccurate and stereotypical portrayals of countries and the oversimplification of history. And it's not supposed to be an accurate history book of some sort. I really love the Hetalia now, but if one wants a more accurate version of it, they have to remove the charm of the characters and everything. Personally, it's best to keep history in stuff like documentaries and history classes, where making an anime of it isn't needed.
And yeah, I have seen a few other Pinoys say that if PH was a girl, then it'll be a bad idea because of the things that happened to women in our history, particularly WW2.
So far, I don't see anyone portray PH as a Mary Sue or Gary Stu, so that's cool. I used to like the whole "Piri is a cute girl who gets shipped by everyone and needs someone to rescue her" portrayal of the fandom's Philippines OC, but as the years passed by, I start to dislike that portrayal. I feel like the fandom could've done better ay making a female Philippines, but I guess more research needs to be done? The way I see it, Ukraine as a PERSON feels a deep bond with Russia because they met when they were so little and they considered each other siblings.
She has fond memories of Ivan and wishes they could all be family and close like things used to be (Russia also shows this sentiment from time to time).
As Nations, however, they aren't supposed to be on as good terms.
Katya was shown having been advised by her boss not to see Ivan and she expresses sorrow for this, because she misses being close to him as a person regardless of politics.
Watching those anime episodes nowdays after the war started surely feels bitter, but I do believe it didn't actually age like milk, I've always thought what Himaruya was trying to convey there was their feelings as human beings and not as puppets by their respective governments.
Hetalia characters always have their own personality, feelings and wishes that don't necessarily overlap with their people's average or their government's wishes.

As a portuguese I would like a lot more if Portugal was a woman, specifically because like ... PORTUGAL IN HETALIA IS JUST A CLONE OF SPAIN, but also because the Portuguese Republic in portuguese is female like the "gender of the words" is female and it would be really interesting to have another female character(also forgot to mention that the capital is always refered by the locals as a woman, THERE IS LITERALLY A SONG ABOUT IT("Lisboa menina e moça" for the curious)).

Unpopular opinion: Hima was right about making Ireland as a male instead of a female. If Ireland was a female character we would have got 1849021 fanfics about how Ireland got pregnant of England and how Northern Ireland was born, we already had a few fics where England was like very bad with Ireland, can't mention here cause its sensitive topics when he wasn't even canon, so now that he is canon, I'm glad he is a male, I think you guys dont realize the AMOINT of England x Ireland or Scotland x Ireland if Ireland was a female so it's a big no for me.

Philippines, Ireland, and Portugal is quite a troublesome in History if those characters happens to be female. Especially with the Philippines because of the treacherous history with Spain, America, and Japan. Are you aware of the consequence of the shipping controversy that may be tied with History? Himaruya with the given credit that took so long is because he wants to prevent a "Korea Controversy Scandal" where ironically Korea was omitted in the Anime. Many Filipinos who i know do not give a DAMN if the country was portrayed as a Man as long as the history is not inaccurate, lately in the country has been struggling with History Inaccuracy and History Revisionism for decades now. Also the country was named after a King of Spain.
For Ireland, it is also again with history that may be more troublesome with England with England's wrongdoing with banning of Ireland's Culture and Language which messes up that not all Irish People speak Irish as their Main Language apart from English. Portugal also ties with History too with Spain
Again i could go on, but given where credit is due to Himaruya, he does take time to do research with History and not to offend a lot People. Sometimes a Female character is not suited due to insensitive History and depiction of stereotypes. Korea is not in the anime, isn't it that not enough? i ain't sexist but i wish some characters were female too like Poland, Croatia, or Romania for example. Well I may sound biased, but Hima is japanese after all so it's expected he'd favorize his own country over the others on way or another. We all would've if we were the authors tbh, but agree he should pay more attention around the world. I like the prefectures being characters tho cause I'd love more fanarts of the countries having land parts as their own characters (mainly in fan content, I just like that it's possible).

Poland didn't disappear for the same reason why Italy somehow existed through all the centuries when Italy as an actual Nation didn't exist, and the strip you showed at 12:07 implies this very well: this strip is about the raise of Patriotic sentiment in the 1800s, which was a big factor in why the multi-ethnic Austro-Hungarian Empire eventually crumbled from the inside.
Hetalia Personifications are mostly not linked to whether an Independent government exists or not, but to whether they have people who recognize themselves as part of a set of traditions/cultures/language/history and perceive themselves as 'something else' compared to all other existing Nations.
Poland disappeared as an independent Country, but Poles did not. Much like Italians, being ruled by foreign Nations only made their patriotic sentiment burn more strongly, which allowed their Heta-Self to survive.
Yeah, and Lithuania was partitioned too, yet no one sees it as weird that Russia just dragged him to his own house in the series and Liet didn't die as well... I imagine that either Poland as a character was living with Prussia/Russia/Austria, or had to do chores for them (idk, in turns?), or he escaped to France/Britain, like Polish elites did and came back for a while with Napoleon, then was back under Russia's rule etc. Like, Baltic states were seen as living with others, long before any independent sort of gov was established there and it was seen as ok to have them in scenes related to Poland-Lithuanian wars with Sweden and his gang, so I hardly think it weird that Poland didn't just die after partitioning (also some countries didn't recognise that, like Turkey, so that's more ambiguous).
At this point I just have decided that the whole regions are body parts aspect of Hetalia isn't canon and hasn't been for almost a decade. It was never a good edition to the series to begin with.
Wasn't one of the first instances of this Hima making Corsica Italy's nipple? And he only did that just to have France molest Italy. Nevermind the fact Corsica is a part of France today so does that mean France owns Italy's nipple? Probably. It wasn't funny in 2007 and its not funny now. This lore can die, give me region personifications instead.
Your opinion on Russia is sad, but valid. Even though I joined the fandom pretty late, I knew he was a controversial character. Lots of reasons to love him, but also lots of reasons to hate him. He's always been kind of hard for me to define, especially because his actions and behaviors contradict his thoughts and intentions many times. A seemingly deliberate writing choice, but one that I'm not sure Hima has executed that well.
I like Spain and generally think he's funny, but he's not much of a favorite of mine. The Romano stuff is a pretty big reason why, but I also think his personality is kinda boring lol
I completely agree with you on the Ancient Nations. Their designs are so cool, but I could not care less about them.
All that aside, your dedication to the series has always been admirable. I consider myself an avid fan of the anime, but have admittedly not even caught up to the most recent season. I don't even read the manga. Meanwhile you're like the Hetalia encyclopedia lmao. It helps that you also draw upon your own historical knowledge and worldly experiences.

The points you made about some countries, especially Egypt and Cyprus, make me think of how probably not having official post-Yugoslavia countries + Albania may actually be a blessing in disguise, as I fear they could be made into something basic like these poor guys... Egypt and Turkey would probably be your typical loud salesmen guys next to which Denmark looks like a calm person, and Cyprus would be just as intense as Greece about his excavations and history and would boast about it quite often (and for a good reason). I'm not from either of these countries, I'm just reading about their history and people, that's the idea I'm getting from what I've heard and seen so far.

The heights Hima released recently are supposedly the ones they have in current times.
140 cm was the height Latvia was mentioned to have under the Soviet Union and he did mention that he should be 10 cm taller but his height was compromised by Russia constantly pushing down on his head.
Since now the USSR is no more and Latvia is an independent Country, it only makes sense that Hima made him 15 cm taller (155cm).
The fact that some of their heights changed from the 20th to the 21st Century based on historical events is furtherly proven by the strip where Romano notices that Italy grew taller than him despite being shorter during WW2.
Hetalia characters' heights aren't simply based on average height in their Country, it's also (if not mostly) based on their history, geopolitical behavior and economy.

I once downloaded a countryhumans dating sim for shits and giggles and was expecting to laugh at it but I ended up actually kind of...liking a lot of the characterization??? Sometimes even more than the characterization in Hetalia??? Like the game's Finland and Sweden were quite different (much closer to the swapped-Hetalia personalities you mention at 1:06), I liked the Finland-Sweden and Poland-Lithuania dynamics (Lithuania is a badass buff gal which the Hetalia fandom would go WILD for), there was a great PolHun BrOTP going on, and I ended up going for the Poland route because I loved him in the game. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I honestly wish some of the canon Hetalia characters were more like the characters in the countryhumans dating sim.

Prussia: He acts like a militaristic Bavaria. I want to see Hardass Soldier Brother Prussia. He should be the REASON Germany is the way he is. Also why is he still alive? Why is he East Germany? He makes so little sense!
Finland: I understand why you’re like this. Japanese people think of Finland as the land of Moomins and cozy furniture. I know this. I’m Japanese. But wow what missed opportunity.
Philippines: Why are you male?
HRE: The HRE was way more interesting than just an orbiter simp of Italy. For one, there’s a REASON they wanted Italy so much. It thought of itself as literally Rome reborn. Making HRE/Chibitalia _very_ awkward. Also where is his juicy rivalry with Eastern Rome? Oh wait, we can’t discuss the Holy ROMAN Empire actually thinking of itself as Rome because of his romance with Chibitalia! Siiiggghhhh.
Korea: Hima, you didn’t have to be 100% PC. I get it. But this was a minefield. I also wish Korea was depicted as this serious workaholic perfectionist who is way in over his head, not the annoying little brother.
Sweden: Why is he scary? Swedes aren’t stereotyped as scary. I know about the Swedish Empire, but… Having a big scary Empire wasn’t limited to Sweden. Also why the obsession with Finland? He should have a similar dynamic with Finland as Spain and Romano, where Sweden raised him.
Iceland: The national catchphrase is literally “It will sort itself out!”. And then we have this angsty boi. …??? And his clothing annoys me. Iceland had no concept of formalities until recently. He should be wearing a sweater or something.
Estonia: Why is he a self-insert? He’s another one who should be portrayed as stoic. A deadpan character who the wackier characters can bounce off of. Instead we’ve got Mr. Self-Insert. Sigh.

Poland in my Alt-talia series has got to be one of my favorite characters to write. Though I have him literally cloned into three people after the partitions, because other countries have had their borders abolished and not died, but I write him during the Commonwealth era as this large ham who grandiosely declares himself the BULWARK OF CATHOLICISM and I love it. His lost potential crashes into Liet as well; they could have had a terrible friendship breakup due to the circumstances that erupted into the Polish-Lithuanian War, but we don’t get that drama. I don’t find the fact he still existed after the partitions to be too lore-breaking; again, other countries have had their borders abolished and still exist. I mean, why else would Romano still exist?
Korea… Imo there’s tons of potential with two Koreas you could do but I’m pretty sure Hima wouldn’t have done it justice.

Also since you put importance in lore, I’m surprised Prussia isn’t on here. Like why is he still alive? He existed as a German state for a while, which again raises the question of whether pieces of countries are personified or not. Then he became East Germany because… Why? No seriously, why? Other than him being too popular to kill off? There is no continuity between Prussia and East Germany, except for Brandenburg being in it.

As a Greek i don't like how in Hetalia , Greece is portrayed as quiet and mostly sleeping or being sleepy. We are energetic people and love having fun. It would be better if he was kind of party animal. And it is sad that we never saw any interaction between Greece and Italy, since the two Nations have lots of things in common. We only see Greece interacting with Turkey and Japan. He should interact with more people.

And I never understood why Greece is Hetalia is so close with Japan, while actually Japan is closer with Turkey. Also many past Giripan fanworks would make Turkey , unlikeable on purpose, so Japan would reject the "bad guy" Turkey in favour of the "good guy" Greece. And I never got it why Himaruya made Greece being so obsessed with cats. I know there are lots of stray cats on many Greek roads but we don't get crazy about them.

Because of the severe censorships not a lot is heard about Belarus like Ukraine but there have been major conflicts regarding their leader and to an extent Russia (because it butts in) mostly in 2020 and the sentiment likely didn't fade due to the amount of violence that ensued from it. So unless the opinions of corrupt leaders matter more than the dozens of citizens, current aph Belarus is not an accurate representation of her country, like at all, she only shares the name.

Russia used to be my favorite character in 2012 when I was obsessed with Hetalia. Looking at the anime now, Russia's cannon is way more like the country of Ukraine. The national Ukrainian flower is the sunflower, When attacked Ukrainians stayed and fought and kicked Russia's ass. No way in hell is Ukraine sad and whiney like the character is shown in the anime. The character of Ukraine is just an excuse to put big boobs on a character. Belarus's character more fits the country of Russia because no way is the country of Russia scared of Belarus. It's the other way around.
The way I see it if their designs should switch with each other, I think it fits better if aphRussia was Belarus and aphBelarus was Russia. And honestly double win cause it would've fit with the "mother Russia" memes if he were female.

In songs ("Wake up Baltics - Three Sisters stand by the coast of the sea"), sculptures ("Māte Latvija ar kritušiem dēliem" aka "Mother Latvia with fallen sons") + LatvijA - in our grammar, if name ends on A then its a female name. To me Nyo!Latvia is canon Latvia (sorry Raivis)

I don't know why, but a lot of the characters from Hetalia I tend to not really care about the female characters.
I'm a girl myself and I don't why, but when it comes to female characters from any show, I tend to favor the male ones over them.
Does anybody know the reason for this?
it's either you're a straight woman or that women tend to be written pretty blandly compared to the men and don't get much screen time

I think its because aside from Belarus, most of the female characters just are not allowed to be as dynamic as the male characters. A lot of the male characters oscilate between being jerks, to being loyal supportive friends, to being dumb, to being smart. They are a lot of things. The women however are usually just nice. They aren't loud. They are usually very feminine. Even if they are tough they are still very feminine. Their accomplishments are often just told to us and not shown. They don't get to be more. Its in its own way, a form of sexism.

Well, Hidekaz Himaruya only show Republic of Ireland as a guy but never mention about Northern Ireland was also guy, so your dream of Ireland being a woman is still alive and I also hope that Himaruya makes Northern Ireland as a beautiful lady.
Actually both Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have been shown and both of them are male, both being described as England's older brothers alongside Scotland and Wales

@@maxdavis7722 (I'm quoting the manga rn) Basically in their case (at least with the UK 4) at first they all had no idea who was the oldest and youngest. England wanted to be the main representative of the UK (he's often referred to as Britain for a reason) so they made an agreement, they let him represent all 4 brothers in international relations and he accepts that he's the youngest of them and lets them call him their little brother. With Rep. of Ireland I guess Himaruya just liked the idea of the Big Brother Ireland.
Sometimes age makes no sense in Hetalia but here it's not even their actual ages

Northern Ireland was introduced too and actually there was a huge chaos with him because canon Northern Ireland is basically fanon Scotland and canon Scotland was fanon Northern Ireland. Many people got mad at it because canon Northern ireland was supposed to be canon Scotland, because the only one with red hair was supposed to be Scotland instead of the brunette whim the fandom thought for many years it was Northern Ireland. Ireland was introduced like 2 months later in and even interacted with the rest of the UK brothers, there is a panel of Ireland and North together, so both of them are make characters

So, the funny thing is i will change their personalities so much. Like, take Russia for example. My headcannon is that, yes he is manipulative to some degree but he doesn't know that he's doing it. He has the mind of a child but can understand deeper things and can be kind. I do not listen to cannon because you do that. I keep their genders but change their personalities. And yes i care about the Anicents. (i'm a history nut)
I think Cyprus would be more interesting if Himaruya added the past of Cyprus and TRNC. But that would cause conflicts between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
