Hi this method really helped me so just a quick thank you, hit a 46 break for the first time yesterday, after usually getting no more than 10! ready for the Pro circuit!!
I have watched all the clips up to 9 so far. I am learning alot from these clips. I am totally terrible at snooker ( highest break of 25 or so :P ) but i am dieing to get better. I will watch the rest before going back to the club for a game :D Thanks alot for these clips.
@ Kash, you're absolutely right. My mate just came back from China, snooker is massive out there. Everyone plays for the shadows and lights. It really works. He showed me at our snooker club. It makes sense now!
nice vid maxman. just thought id share something with anyone watching, when I practise potting blacks of the spot i try to get position on black after potting and see how many i can do, think my record is about 8 .. fun to play against mates aswell. thnx keep the vids coming very helpull definatly improved.
thx for the comment jake.... i do mention in the clip that angles for potting can vary slightly......but the main 4 are full, 3/4, 1/2 and quarter this way its easier to explain
hello there .....and less of the old .......lol ........its the camera thats old .....and not the clip itself ........thanks for watching and commenting.......neil
Thanks for posting this. Still not sure how to aim for quarter/halfball etc., especially when cueball is long way from object ball. For half ball shot, would you be aiming cue at outer edge of object ball?
Hi Neil, thanks for posting these vids up, they are really helpful but I still can't work out what is going wrong with my game. My highest break is 37 but that was years ago! I'm struggling to get anywhere near that again, but I only really play once a week to be fair. I have a problem with consistency. Sometimes I pot 4 or 5 in a row and other times I can't pot the first ball. How can I become more consistent with my aim? Thanks.
thank you for the training, but in a real match we don't have 2 shots to try it out rather it is thinner or thicker. So what should I do? How could I pot a ball without trying it out twice?
But Neil! We can't afford to miss a shot on purpose just to see how to do it the next time. Isn't it important to get it right the first time otherwise you could lose the frame.
when standing behind the shot u look at cue bal, object ball and angle and pocket, but when u r down and featuring, u look at cue bal, object, but do u look or sight the angles towards pocket? plz answer tbx
nice lessons mate, are you going to cover shot selection at all? i`m sure it would go a long way in connecting the technical side of snooker to the practical side thus making the game more fun in the way of results plusi do like to hear the scouse accent!!
How do I avoid unintended side on the ball. I play pool and snooker both at a decent level. When I go back to snooker I find it really hard to make the switch.
hi i did the same practice last night for 2hrs but i dont understand i always hit the side to cue ball so strugle to pot the boll. i could only pot 2 out of 10 shots. any advise my cue was also straight.
neilmaxman i want to ask a question about posture of standing still perfect cue grip and about power shots ..... when i use power shot i cant pot any ball why? and i know every shot shot . full screw full top spin every side but i cant pot the ball... why ? plz help me sir .... i am playing for around two years and my break is about 16 i feeling frustrated while playing now ..... HELP ME Sir FROM INDIA YOUR FAN
hi Neil, Im a club player and can regular make 10-15 points but then i'll always miss a simple shot. And I have a problem i'll miss 8-9 of shots from the angle in your video while I can pot 7-8 out of 10 from the other side. Can you figure out my mistake or give me some tips. thx
@nissanr34blitz There is a great method for working out where to aim for any contact point. It is a new version of the overlap method found at - suite101.com/content/snooker-and-pool-aiming-the-overlap-method-a356906
This sounds like a big breakthrough idea. or technique... deliberately and consciously miss... know exactly why, where and how you missed, then re take with full focus to pot and obviously pot and know all the inner differences... And get the subconscious mind used to what a real pot feels and looks like for the right cue action!!! cheers. I will practice tomorrow for 4 hours and see what I get
the fact is trevor there are several ways of learning the potting angles ........and dummy ball is actually different to ghost .........simply because with dummy you have to keep placing a ball on the potting angle ........the idea is to keep the game simple .....so now your imaging a ball that isn't there and doing what exactly ........hitting a spot on the objcet ball.........so why not forget the ghost and just hit the spot .......simples
hi there ......obviously you're right from the perspective of playing a match ,,,,,,,but what i'm suggesting in the clip is from a practice point of view ....when you can play the shot as part of a practice routine as many times as you wish.......thus hopefully getting it right for the real thing .....neil
@jcjackstar ........hello again jcjack .........my highest is 147 ........my highest in pro-ams is 144 and my highest on the professional circuit is 134 .......thanks for asking
Kash Mahmood 1 second ago It's all to do with shadows/light , everything about drawing imaginery lines and pretending every shot is a plant is bull. The point of contact is the point furthest from the pocket. Ronnie O Sullivan didn't knock in a 147 in 5 mins by visualising and imaging balls and objects balls projected travel. The shadows and light on the ball tells you where to strike for the relevant pocket. Try it!
Neither Ronnie or any other pro will use shadows and light for potting angles. The table lighting for the television stages of tournaments is very different to the lights in Snooker clubs where most pros practice. He doesn't use the ghost ball technique either. He just knows where the aim point is most of the time.
The video isn't high quality, but it doesn't bother me...i don't need to see tiny spots in the cloth. I need to see the cue and the balls, and i can easily do that, so stop complaining.
Tell the truth pal. ALL PROFESSIONALS HIT THE LIGHT AND SHADOWS OF THE BALL. Nobody imagines a plant and imaginery lines. If you don't believe me just go and try it. I've been told by a world champion retired snooker player! Point of contact for object ball is furthest away from the pocket. The light and shadows find it. Physics lights angles. Just give it shot!
Kash Mahmood ........light and shadows....so how do you explain the fact there are no or very little shadow on professional match tables because of tv lighting rigs .....also would please like to name the retired world champion .....also how would I go about potting balls with no light on the table ....so there's no light and no shadow....smoke and mirrors maybe
All straight shots, aim furthest point from pocket. All other shots aim at the shadows. Did you watch the snooker final yesterday. Blind cut backs from 9 ft away where a red is hidden in the pack. Either you're very naïve or you really don't know. Put the cue ball on the pink spot and pot the green from its spot. HIT THE SHADOW. Don't argue just try it! I can come down and show you physically if you like. I'm in Bradford where ae you?
Kash Mahmood ....1. I'm a current professional snooker coach with 20 years experience 2. I was also a professional snooker player and played in 18 world championships....and played in competition or exhibitions over 10 world champions .....and WE don't play to hit the light or the shadows.....
Why do you people argue. For gods sake put the cue ball at an angle, to pot the green in the green pocket. Hit the light, or shadow. Just try this. Shall I demo it and put it on youtube. Just like in cricket people don't match fix, or doctor the ball to swing until they get caught. Its a secret players like to keep. JUT TR IT!
Kash Mahmood .....please feel free to put a clip on RUclips and explain how it works.....also please name the retired world champion who uses this method....beware of being libellous .....there is no secrets .....there are hundreds of books DVDs and RUclips clips on this subject.....wish I had a fiver for every person I've proved wrong who think hit it where it shines is right ....id be a rich man
Hi this method really helped me so just a quick thank you, hit a 46 break for the first time yesterday, after usually getting no more than 10! ready for the Pro circuit!!
Will people stop commenting on Neil's camera because it really doesn't make a difference! Thanks Neil for posting these vids! So helpful

well done and i'm glad you've found the clips useful ........hope you're grandad doesn't do any clips he could do me out of the job .......lol
thx for the comment jake.... i do mention in the clip that angles for potting can vary slightly......but the main 4 are full, 3/4, 1/2 and quarter this way its easier to explain
simple way to improve and understand angles more- very good indeed.
Thanks Neil, I never heard of using dummy ball before hehe
very good lesson thank you alot, however i have trouble with potting balls which are just slightly off the cushion? any ideas? thanks
you're absolutely right clayton .......dummy ball or ghost ball whichever you call it just gets way to confusing for a lot of players .......neil
really glad its helped .....and thanks for taking time to comment
hello there .....and less of the old .......lol ........its the camera thats old .....and not the clip itself ........thanks for watching and commenting.......neil
Very nice video! Keep it up!

I have made century breaks. My judgement of the potting angle is always in relation to where I visualise a full ball shot will go.
Me too. Only I don't make century breaks. I think my cueing needs work. I know what I have to do, but doing it is another thing. It's called practice.
Knightlore10 thats interesting..so you mean..visualise hitting it full in the face and then adjust
Thats interesting. So you always calibrate from full ball?
thank you for the training, but in a real match we don't have 2 shots to try it out rather it is thinner or thicker. So what should I do? How could I pot a ball without trying it out twice?
not sure why you're getting poor ratings. your videos are fantastic. keep it up.
thx for the advice, its kinda similar to how i practice- which is helping nicely :)
also trevor thank you for watching my clips and sharing your opinions .............
But Neil! We can't afford to miss a shot on purpose just to see how to do it the next time. Isn't it important to get it right the first time otherwise you could lose the frame.

well when you are able to precisely miss the black intentionally, i guess you should be able to precisely pot the black as well
Lol thats what i thought. The opponent will be just as pleased if you keep retrying your shots!
