    All I heard were excuses from Eric. The trainer didn’t care about him enough, the food service people wanted him to weigh in and he couldn’t find a place to do that, blah blah blah. He’s old enough to be honest and say he’s scared and probably has mental health issues that make him freeze up. Dr. Phil is going to understand, but he has to be honest. Speaking from my own personal life, it’s hard to admit you feel like you’re at war with your own brain and you’re losing.

      I know this statement has it's own truths, truths I agree with but sometimes the issue is deeper than just "I eat too much" there's other things to take into account like their upbringing if they were forced to eat this might lead to them eating too quickly which makes them eat more because they don't give enough time for food to reach their stomach which makes them believe they need more. Also what if they were raised in a home where food was something hard to come by they might overeat because subconsciously the think this might be the last of there food. For people dealing with these kind of issues it could be hard for them to point the finger at themselves.

    This kind of reminds me of the way I used to handle my mental health.. I would miss appointments, skip my medicine, etc etc and blame all of it on my doctor. Only because I was scared to change, and I didn't want the help... Then I realized nothing will get better if I do not change, so I put in the effort and now I am as happy as I've ever been in my life! It's something you have to learn to maintain, not a one-time works forever type solution.
    Eric needs to learn to take it one day at a time. Do everything your trainer says everyday until it becomes a habit. That's why they say it's a lifestyle change, not just a diet.

      Before the advent of mass fast food places people were generally slim-they prepared their own meals at home & going to the chip shop or KFC was a rare treat. Plates were smaller, portion sizes were smaller, ready meals weren't really a thing. By 2050 it is estimated that 50% of the US & UK will be obese, most are saying it will be considerably higher than that-yet while we hear non-stop about the ecological issues in the world we have fat acceptance & healthy at any size being paraded around & promoted by parts of the media-Tess Holliday is on the cover of Cosmopolitan etc & being held up as something for young women to aspire to. Calling people fat or obese is now frowned upon etc. Simply the NHS in the UK which is already at breaking point with obesity, alcoholism & drug addiction problems will not be able to cope & it also ties into the ecology issue with the transport of food around the world to keep 500, 600, 700 pound people that size.

      I think it's too late for him. He's got congestive heart failure, so I don't know if weight loss surgery is even an option. He'd be a super high risk patient due to his bad heart, but also he'd be non-compliant. It's not as easy as just going in, getting the surgery, and then losing weight. You have to stick with the program both pre- and post-surgery. They make you lose weight before the surgery, and there's no way he'd do that.

    • @livijones5409
      @livijones5409 4 года назад +4

      This reminds me of a bigger version of my father-in-law. His health is the worst I've ever seen, and he has an excuse ready in his back pocket for EVERYTHING. I try to suggest little changes he can make and why, and none of it appeals to him. But then he'll chow down on a bacon cheeseburger, diet Pepsi, fries, and a full bag of candy while telling my husband to lose weight. It's the same kind of thinking behind his idea that everyone else needs to have a job but he shouldn't. It goes so far beyond weight control, but that sort of mindset particularly doesn't work for gastric bypass. That's why patients have to fight for approval for that surgery: If you can't stick religiously to the new rules (no refined sugar, no citrus, no processed foods, drink a full glass of water before and after each meal, etc), you will feel immense stomach pain and then die. And then that doctor worked for nothing. It's really sad to see more and more people behaving this way, especially when it's not even an exaggeration to say that it's literally killing them.

      @Joanna Martin lady your heads in the right place. But it is selfish behavior just like any other addiction. (Ex heroin addict speaking here) we are struggling so much to deal with life we find a way to escape. That may be food or drugs or whatever. The people myself included are struggling but we arnt thinking about how our actions effect others and if we are the guilt just leads us into more selfish self destruction. You have to hold people accountable. It was only because people stopped feeling sorry for me and told me what reality is that I was able to look at myself and realize this isnt going to work forever and I need to change. If we continue to accept behavior that hurts others it will never change. We have to expect more for ourselves for everyone and letting people hurt us and kill themselves in front of us because they have "an emotional" problem or "they're hurting" we are doing ourselves an injustice and we are doing the people hurting an injustice. We have to expect more we have to require more if we ever expect anyone to change. Why change if everyone makes excuses for you and says its justified?

    I take issue with the way this was handled. Was Eric a model patient? Most likely absolutely not. Do I think that this trainer's style did not suit him and his circumstances? Absolutely. Just because he worked for dr Phil and Robin he should work for everyone? Nonsense. Nobody is "wrong" in this scenario, it was just not a good fit. And guilt tripping someone into thinking it is all their fault when it also most likely wasn't? Not cool. I enjoy Dr Phil, but his weight loss stuff always gives me shivers down my spine. Maybe its just my dietetic background speaking.

      I agree that people need personalized help, but I do think the issue is Eric. It is clear that he does not yet have the mindset of actually wanting to help himself. Other people can't be blamed for him not wanting help. Robert has helped numerous other client's of Dr. Phil who have all been in similar situations as Eric (continuing watching episode). I doubt Eric would've worked well with anyone else either because it is him not wanting to change his behavior. There comes a time when people need to stop making excuses. He either needs to learn to work with someone despite it being his "perfect fit," or he's going to die period.

    Feeling like someone doesn’t like you isn’t an excuse to not let them help you. When I went to rehab I really felt like this particular councilor didn’t like me -she was the senior counselor AND I felt this way about the nurse. I almost left, started folding all my clothes to leave n all. WELL... I decided to stay and work on myself. Fast forward a couple weeks and I had an AWESOME relationship with both of them and I realized that they were just didn’t like the way I was BEHAVING -and those two women actually wound up leaving a huge positive impact on my recovery.
    My point is, you don’t have to feel like people like you for them to help you if you are serious enough. Many times they will begin to love you if you start helping them fight for you.
    And I understand that he very well may have some mental health issues that conflate they situation because that was also going on in my situation. I was actually at a dual diagnosis rehab for substance abuse and mental health problems. (I already had my mental health disorders diagnosed before I went, but because I do have a couple “heavy weights” let’s say I had to go to that kind of a facility.)
