    Recently bought 1985 Chevrolet Caprice 305 8 Litre, and I love her. She really is a money hole though lol. Any idea where I can find my idle air fuel mixture screw? I’ve been struggling

    Mine is getting a new fuel pump and fuel filter. You'll be driving along and it will stumble and die and you'll be sitting at the side of the road. It will try to fire when you crank it but it wont start. The second time it did that a neighbor took me back to my house and I gotm gas and filled a little bottle and brought 5 gallons just in case it was out of gas and the gauge was wrong(It wasnt, the gauge on both that and the 1981 Bonneville are very accurate). So I poured a little down the carburetor and it fired right and and drove home.

    Great video! I have an '84 Caprice with a 305. Yes, can you show a photo of the cover of your manual?
    I'm getting wisps of smoke from the rear of the engine, I'm thinking it's from the bad valve cover gasket.
    My thought is that there might be a wire or harness that might be causing the burning also at the rear of
    the engine.

      There must be an image of the manual cover in one of my caprice videos…. It’s just the 1985 Chevrolet shop manual for the Impala, caprice, Monte Carlo, and el Camino.

      This video is the closest I have so far, as I pan across the compressor, accumulator, etc., and you can see the wiring from that. If you have a specific question I can check wiring colors, and the shop manual and reply again. Just let me know.

    How can I get the vacuum hose connections for a 1988 caprice

    • @LongologoProductions
      @LongologoProductions  Месяц назад

      This can be quite difficult. I assume you no longer have the sticker under the hood showing the vacuum connections for the rudimentary emissions controls in a high level diagram. This sticker is shown on the fan shroud over the radiator in my video. I would then look to the shop manual for the 1988, as well as online for any under-the-hood images of 1988 cars with the same engine configuration as yours. Sorry I can’t be more help.

    • @LongologoProductions
      @LongologoProductions  Год назад

      Perhaps you’re not getting fuel to the carb? Is the fuel filter clogged? No clicking might mean the fuel pump isn’t working.

    My caprice has diesels very badly after I stop it, sometimes it even afterburns or afterfires. What would you say is the issue? There could be tons of things but what’s most likely in your opinion?

    • @LongologoProductions
      @LongologoProductions  9 месяцев назад +1

      @BenjaminMilton-zj9wb: From the shop manual for dieseling, it says to first visually check your vacuum hoses for any splits, kinks, or improper connections; check carburetor choke, throttle linkage, and fast idle cam for sticking; check cruise control for proper adjustment (?); check engine idle speed; check ignition timing. From the shop manual for backfiring, do the same visual checks; make sure hot air tube is connected to air cleaner; check for proper operation of THERMAC; on cold engine only check EFE valve; check carb accelerator pump operation; check Differential Pressure (VAC) sensor hose for restriction or for fuel/water in hose; check for proper operation of EGR valve; perform compression check - look for sticking or leaking valves; check for restricted exhaust system (MY NOTE: also check for clogged catalytic converter -- this happened to my car several years ago); check for crossfire between spark plugs, distributor cap, spark plug wires, and proper routing of spark plug wires (wires for cylinders that fire in sequence should be on the same side of the engine and should not be routed next to each other, i.e., 8 and 4, and 5 and 7); check for proper valve timing.... I hope something here helps!

    I have an 89 caprice. The problem I have is when I turn the switch, all the lights come on, but it will not make a sound when I turn to start it. I've replaced the switch cylinder and the computer part of the switch also. I've replaced the neutral safety switch too. I can start the car if I jump it from the starter. It has a good battery and fuses. If you have any idea what the problem is, your help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @LongologoProductions
      @LongologoProductions  Год назад +1

      I researched the shop manual on this. Assuming you have one of the original engines, it sounds like you have a bad connection between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid, and/or a bad ground from the starter solenoid over to the battery. Does the battery recharge normally while the engine is running? If so that should mean that your connections from the battery light on the instrument panel through the generator and to the battery are OK. Then it would be a matter of checking/cleaning/reconnecting/tightening your connections from the battery to the starter and from the ignition switch to the starter. The fact that you can jump start it from the starter is pointing to a bad connection somewhere in these places. Chasing bad connections is a pain. I hope this helps you.

      @@LongologoProductions yes its the original tbi 305. I haven't checked to see if it's charging the battery when I do crank it from the starter. I'll have to check that. But I really appreciate you responding and helping me out.

      @LongologoProductions it ended up being the wire from the switch to the starter. I had to run a temporary one till I take it to the electric shop.

      @@user-me1sv7bt8g The shop manual says this could be caused by a number of things. I assume the same problem occurs whether the engine is started after being cold or hot. Check to make sure the hot air tube is connected to the air cleaner housing. Check to make sure the THERMAC (on the arm that extends from the air cleaner housing) is operating properly. Check the carburetor, choke valve, throttle, linkage, and fast idle cam for sticking. Check to make sure all vacuum lines are connected properly to the carburetor. Check EFE valve (black plastic piece in front of the carburetor with small hose connections at right angles) (I have had to replace the EFE valve before although I don’t have a video on it). Check the EGR valve (see my other video on this). I hope this helps.
