    Kendra is a "mother of many" living just outside of Los Angeles, CA. She started Catholic All Year as a way to share the practice of celebrating the liturgical year in the home, and getting to know the saints and seasons of the Church calendar through food, prayer, and conversation. If you’d like her guide to liturgical living, it’s available in book-form in The Catholic All Year Compendium: Liturgical Living for Real Life and The Catholic All Year Prayer Companion: The Liturgical Year in Practice, both of which you can find at CatholicAllYear.com.

      That is an interesting life experience. I work with several Burmese Muslims that are all younger like in their 18-26 range. Outside of dietary restrictions they kinda just seem like secular American kids listening to rap, smoking, and cursing like sailors. One guy said he converted to Islam because he thought of Christianity as a white man’s religion.
      As a former Muslim what do you think about this?

      @@prestonowens4594 christianity is a peaceful religion that is inclusive, equality is important, and inter-marriage of faiths is accepted, and fully accepting others of different beliefs/races etc., no one is 2nd class, nor is it allowed to lie/steal/cheat or kill others as excuses to ''further the religion for god' - in Christianity all are equal and equally black and white race people. Jesus was hated by the 1st century leaders, as he freed the people/slaves from despot rule, He taught that GOD is in heaven [our father prayer] and that those living in the deserts palaces&mountains temples were simply rogues /bankers etc and absolutely not gods - the ones referred to as gods were evil and kept the people/commoners enslaved in superstition, ignorance, and poverty, and controlled them by fear, plagues, famine&cruelty.

    POPE BENEDICT XVI: “People should not fear God, thinking he is always ready to punish, but rather they should love him because he is always ready to forgive.
    God is not a relentless sovereign who condemns the guilty, but a loving father whom we must love not out of fear of punishment, but because of his goodness.
    The Lord is a God who is just, but always ready to reveal himself as merciful and compassionate.”

      I love this video! Fun traditions from different cultures. What a breath of fresh air after seeing a bunch of Catholic videos that basically just come down to some trad complaining that there are no rails any more. Then she does this fun one that's just an exploration of fun cultural celebrations of feast days around the world. See THIS is what I signed up for.

    A catholic tradition that's popular where I am from is celebrating the nativity of the blessed virgin.
    A week starting from Sept 1 - 8 families gather flowers and offer them to mother mary and sing devotional hymns to her.
    On the feast day which is September 8th, families celebrate the harvest festival. Everyone sits on the floor and eats an array of vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf.

    In the Philippines:
    * Basaan ("Watah-Watah") Festival on Saint John the Baptist Day, when people throw water at each other.
    * Penitents scourge themselves and get crucified on the Holy Week.
    * Carabaos (Asian water buffalo) are trained to kneel for Saint Isidore the Farmer on his feast day.

      Thank you so much for celebrating my boy Isidro. Those of us who still make it living off the land appreciate that this holy man is still venerated. I didn't have a tradition for him than a statue and a novena but it sure is nice to know that someone is interceding in my behalf on matters of sun rain and wind and hail that I can't control. St Isadore the Farmer pray for us.

    Where I live in France, we go to the top of mountains nearby on June 25 night and light up some fire, and people have a good time together, like a scout camp but for june 25. And as our parish has a relic of St James (a rib), we also do the same on July 25 as it is the feast day of our parish.

    Unfortunately we swedes grow up having no clue Santa Lucia is actually a Chatolic saint, it is just something we do as a tradition, and we have no clue to why..as always..."nah, I dunno why we do it, its tradition" But it is a really beautiful tradition. Especially when they are visiting the elderly in nursing homes.
    Thank you

      Yeah, in the secular world it's become pretty much a celebration of light and forgotten that that light is christ (a bit like how O helga natt always sung at the Bingolotto with no apparent reverance or reflection to the meaning of the words). But at least the christian roots are made clear when celebrated in churches. I always try to attend the Luciatåg here in the Dome church in Stockholm. Very beautiful indeed.

    I love learning about other cultures! There is a tradition in Spain during the Immaculate Conception (December 8) called "Tió de Nadal". However, it has nothing to do with the Church and is the weirdest thing I've ever read. Pardon me if I'm mistaken about this information.

    This MIGHT get me excommunicated 🤣…. To me its “ASH WEDNESDAY”. The Readings chosen by the USCCB snd maybe around the world, not sure - is to NOT show you are fasting and to wash your face - so what do most catholics do (even those who make it one of only a handful of days they enter a church each year - unless many funerals, weddings, baptisms, confirmations, holy communions and maybe even an ordination) 😉…… I am a practicing catholic, and participate in Mass at church several times besides Sundays each week BUT I just can not get into the symbol of ash Wed. I know memento mori but the practice drives me nuts!

  • @wms72

    Interesting, but I'd drop the adjective "weird." "Weird" has a strong connotation of "demonic", used to describe witchcraft in Shakespearean times and in Old English and Old Norse. Better to say "Funny Catholic customs." Better to not say "traditions," to avoid conflating them in non-Catholic minds with Divine Tradition, which is the oral Word of God guarded by the Catholic Church.

    Don't a lot of these traditions come from pagan times? (like bonfires)

    • @alphacause
      @alphacause 29 дней назад +7

      Sure. Undoubtedly many beloved traditions and celebratory customs that Catholics practice have their roots in pagan practices. That, in and of itself, doesn't make those practices bad. It is how we adopt and express those traditions, through a Catholic lens, that determines whether they glorify the Lord or are just a means to commit idolatry which detracts from the worship of God. If we were to jettison everything that comes from pagan culture, many things we value, like philosophy, democracy, and geometry would have to be expunged from our world.

    • @Jack-hd1zn
      @Jack-hd1zn 29 дней назад +4
