The size of later model 4x4s has really been the push for larger tires. 35s were king from the 70s to the 00s. But with the JK being so much larger then a TJ and an f150 now making an OBS look like a ranger, 37s kinda became necessary.
To air down, side wall depth is necessary. Saw a pic from SEMA a Jeep with 20" wheels. The rubber band tires will get snake bite ( people who ride road bicycles know what I mean) punctures/failures are increased. Plus the ride softness is compromised when you air down and have large diameter wheels.
I've wheeled 20" rims with 32.8" tall tires before 😂 seemed fine air down to 20psi. I now have 17" rims with 33.2" tall tires since I wanted the dot legal bead locks (aka Icon rebound pro's). 😂 Snow is my terrain of choice.
Unless you want to replace wheel bearings often put them on. You must have a dodgy mechanic who likes to give dodgy pink slips if you live in Australia. Wheel spacers are a defect head up to Qld and glass house mountain see if the cops approve.
@@adsconlabouring Literally no different than changing your wheel offset. People who say this have no idea what they are talking about, and are just repeating a falsehood.
I run 18 in Sahara rims with mud tires and they get scratched up for sure but they haven’t popped a bead yet and I’ve had nothing but fun off-roading my Jeep
My F150 came with 20s and a 32in tire. I switched to a 17 and a 35. Even tho it’s just a 35 they look huge next to the stock wheel/tire with that much sidewall. I just can’t stand big wheels and tires with no sidewall.
Well, I’m trying to run 45s or bigger😅 so a 17 inch rim is the most common rim size for large tires. Other than that it’s either a 20 or a 24 to be able to run 58s and then try and find a off-set beadlock rim in a 17x anything is hard to find
right now my lifted sahara has 18 inch rims and the tires are 35 inch by 12.50. I thought about getting 17s because theres more rims and tires to choose from in that size buuuut id have to buy an entire 5 piece set
How do you feel about bolt on spacers like the ones in the video? 1” spacers are what I need to get the figment I want but I’m on the fence about them.
17s are too big for most jeeps. Unless you are running 39"+ tires, you should be on 15" wheels. Much more sidewall = better traction and handling on and off road.
I also have a 99 Jeep XJ, with 15” rim. I am planning to put 33” tire with 3.5 “ lift on, it should be Ok. I am not too sure about the brand of the lift though.
Still blows my mind that 35s/37s are run on so many dailys now! My 35/9/r16 used to be big boys!
Now that both the Jeep Wrangler 20th Anniversary and Ford Bronco Raptor can be bought with 37's, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of them.
I daily’d my 2004 LJ on tons and 40’s for like 10 months straight before I finally bought my pick up truck

I bought my jp w 33s and 12.5
I remember when I was growing up you were big shit if you had 33s
My 4runner I have now came factory with 33s. Moving up to 35s soon
17’s are just fine for most of us.
I prefer my 15” rims on my CJ with 35” tires. Great sidewall to squish on obstacles
17" are too big! 16" wheels are my favorite.
i love 16s. 18 inch wheels are the biggest that still look good imo
I run 18’s planning to go to 20’s
Gimmee 15” wheels all day

General role of thumb used to be to not have a wheel that was bigger than half the size of your tire.
So I can run 22 wheels with my 46 tires? Awesome!
15" is the magic number for a daily 4x4 rig. You get good sidewall without going to huge tires.
I'm still good with 17s on mine running 37s.
Same here!
Ran this on my Gladiator and do glad i didn't let everyone talk me into going with a 20 and 37's
Love how he shows the wheel spacers which are on of the most dangerous mods you can ever do
Wrong

What's the rule of thumb again? 60/40 rubber/wheel?
I wouldn't go larger then a 17 unless I'm running 40+
I love my 15x10 steelies on my JKU with 35x13.5 tires.
Yes brother! I think I'm going to go down to a 15 with some good old school Dick Cepek's on it.
@@daniellebrewer5450 gonna look old school badass and give you a ton of sidewall to wrap round rocks for grip
That is what this girl grew up on.
You had 5 extra inches on them tires!
16s BABY!
17 and 18 inch wheel sizes are more than enough ( beadlocks and non- beadlocks)👍
I currently have Pro Comp wheels 18 x 19 and Mickey Thompson, Baja A/T 33” and they work great.

running 235 with 16 procomp steel on my 13 jk, got maybe 3/16 inch room around caliper
Those wheels next to him will look good on my Jeep
I remember saying I'll never jump from 15 to 17, thinking they look dumb so big. Lol🤦♂️
My 07 said the factory size is 18 but I'm running 20x12 with 33 inch tires

Is there a video for the width?
I'd rather run 35s on 16s.
15” wheels up to 35s, 17” up to 42s
2inches is the legal limit in Australia. That includes the lift and tyre. Unless you want a defect go ahead
Why you discuss the width of wheels?
Most steering upgrades require 17s as well
Where’s the full vid? I need to understand the width part! Can I fit 285 70s on a 17x9?
Unless you’re running 40” or larger I’d never go bigger than 18”. I want that sidewall.
I have a Zj and got 16 on it I believe
so, would you put 17 or 18's on your YJ?
Because small brakes can’t stop huge tires.
How do you feel about bolt on spacers like the ones in the video? 1” spacers are what I need to get the figment I want but I’m on the fence about them.
Tinkerer's Adventure channel goes into spacers, wheels/ shocks & geometry. He's a rock crawler & engineer.
How bout 4inch wheels
*too 🤦♂️
Nice wheels
Isnt it true these days that all vehicles wheels and tyres sizes seem to be ever-increasing ?
17s are too big for most jeeps. Unless you are running 39"+ tires, you should be on 15" wheels. Much more sidewall = better traction and handling on and off road.
too
I got a 89 xj so I rock 31s on 15s 10.50 wide that’s all you need for an xj and I wheel better than brand new jeeps and side by sides
I got 98 I wanna put bigger wheels I got 15 rims.
Can I put 33?

Yeah but for 3.6 engines 😂
They're rims
I think some of the biggest problems are the stock wheels are 17/7.5 ... And yet they make 8.5 wides that are Not Recons.
I run 26’s perfect setup
18 minimum
No…. Just no….
@@AustinH7 Why not? 18 is the new15 when you are running a 40 inch tire. We have plenty of sidewall to flex and grip even with 35s on them.
Because you still don't have as much sidewall as a 15" wheel, and therefore are leaving performance on the table.
