Hi Guys! Just for information - This rear trailing arm (C-Shape one) was designed that it case of any accident, it will bend itself, to avoid situation where it will destroy fuel tank (that’s why they have a little break in the middle). This is the same part that is used in Non-M E9X platform. Great video as always! Cheers!
Stuff like this is why I like factory arms when possible. I know on my SS there's a lot of aftermarket toe and trailing arms but the Z/28 has uprated bushings in both arms which is why I personally went with them. Of course it also helps that all 4 arms were less than a single set of aftermarket arms.
The M stock arms with sphericals I think is way better than the aftermarket ones with rubber that he replaced them with. Feel like M put more time into designing the part than those aftermarket ones. Its like a downgrade in my eyes.
Hey, don’t worry about that ground wire. Trust me, you guys are not amateurs. I was a BMW tech in a previous life, and I’ve made worse mistakes. One time while training an apprentice I left the fill plug on the transmission loose and the car came back a month later with a destroyed transmission. We all make mistakes. The important thing is you found it, and fixed it, and didn’t ruin anything in the process!
ProTip: The oil level display in the iDrive doesn't reflect the total oil level of the 8.8L V8 oil capacity in the Engine. It is just used to indicate when you need to add 1-2L. When the S65 V8 blew you said the oil level was at 3/4 full....That is 2L down and the oil status should have gone red. Those M3 owners who have had the oil cooler in the front bumper punctured (and continued to drive the car home) know the feeling when the oil level goes red. There is an oil level sensor under the metal plate in the front that should be replaced after 150k miles, earlier if you track your M3. It might give false oil level readings as the car gets older. The best practice is to do an oil change and top up right before a track day, so you know you have 8.8L of oil in the engine, Maybe just add 1-2L before a track day. Ignore the oil overfill warning. M3 S65 V8s burn oil (1L per every 5k miles).
I have a S65 M3.. I will say this comment is wrong. The oil level shows 1 liter difference from top to bottom. That is why if it is below the bottom mark it says "+1 qt" on the display. You need to drive it and take multiple readings to get an updated one. Also, I don't know about this person's M3 but mine only burns 0.5 liter every 10k miles. I never need to top off oil between oil changes. And my car has over 60 track days on it already. They do not all burn oil. He may just have a bad example of an M3.
You ever watch someone do something and think 🧐. Duh 🙄 why didn’t I think of that. Using the old arm and new on putting the bolts through to match the existing length was that moment . lol great job guys.
Very nice progress and love that you are retaining the active damper feature with the new Bilsteins for the street. Good work on scuffing up the rotors for the pad change...an often overlooked, but very important step.
Happy to see you got the engine and ground issue sorted, it’s so disheartening when that happens after a big job like swapping out the engine. Love the track wheels but I can’t say I’m feeling the TE37’s, to me, they are the pumpkin spice of wheels, but it’s your car and I love the content and I’m excited to see how it goes on the track. Great series as usual👍.
Since you asked, i do enjoy seeing beaters get a second chance at life. Maybe a 90s DSM build. Four eyed Fox body? S2000 in need of restoring? Really whatever comes up at the right price, there is no shortage of cool cars. You two always hit it out of the park. 👍
Problem with the lux angel rye kit is that the outter ring barely gets any light due to the right design. I ran them for years and then replaced them with angeleyeguys opaque led kit. Pretty striaght forward swap and all rings are even.
I live right down the road from Apex, I am friends with a lot of the people that work there, I let them shoot photos of my car on (the then unreleased) SM10-RS for their website, and own 2 sets of their wheels (including a set of VS5RS)! I love to see them getting so much love from content creators, and especially you guys since I am such a huge fan!
Great video. Man, you fellas are just so natural on tape. I think the term is called genuine. Love everything you did with this video man. You fellas keep up the great work!
i vote for the apex wheels, that brushed finished just pops. I love the sort of sport street build. I'm doing the same thing with my mustang after i had a more track oriented set up on my last car and hated that it was miserable on the street. you can cruise it on the road, rip around a mountain road at 8/10's and feel great, and still have some fun at the track.
I once chased engine lights/limp mode on my car for a year and a half. Many parts and several thousands of dollars, only to one day realise, I had two vacuum hoses back to front. So I feel you with that ground strap.
You guys have a good mix of econobox and "fancy" car love on your channel. I normally prefer the econoboxes (Hondas) so more of that would be good, but a BMW every now and then doesn't hurt either. I won't lie, I was excited to see the White civic run a better lap time than the M3 here in a fair competition.
10:06 That rear trailing arm is meant to be a sacrificial piece in case of an accident. Why? because it saves you puncturing (potentially) your gas tank. The piece installed now increases that risk… just sayin’.
I feel your pain, this was the stage in my BMW ownership where I had to bite the bullet and sell the whole car for less that I spent on my rebuild. Nothing hurts more but the sooner you decide to bail, the more money you end up saving. I thought I'd tough it out because of how much I had spent already but then my trans gave out and basically just gave the car away because I was sick of fixing it every weekend even though I loved driving it.
Not a BMW guy but I’ve watched the full series. Once again you guys did an amazing job. The budget stuff is more relatable. I would love to see you guys do a budget 500hp AWD RSX(cheapest Honda to make AWD,comes with a K series already) vs a full bolt on EVO 8/6/X or an STi. Make it somewhat if a drag build but can also add in some of the signature track battle you guys are so known for.
Awesome video once again. Watching since the start and loved every episode, by far my favourite car series on this platform. Would be cool to see more videos like this.
After an engine swap the engine would die after the radiator fans kicked on. I was chasing electrical issues and about to tear the car apart until a buddy asked if I had an air filter on the throttle body. I did not and why would that matter I thought. The rad fans kicking on were blowing air into the intake tube and causing the MAF to get odd readings. Guy saved me an unreal amount of trouble.
Loving the mods you've done here Pete. Maybe a gunmetal wheel would have matched the car a bit better than the silver but that's a nit pick. Can't wait to see the track day rematch vs the built Civic! This car needs its redemption arc!!
@@zakarywin7645 I think the lack of gloss doesn't help the Rays. Either a gloss silver or gloss gunmetal/anthracite might look a little better and suit the grey paint better. I think those matte-finish silver Rays would probably look better on a brightly coloured car like a red or blue or yellow car. The polished aluminium finished Apex wheels look great and give a real motorsports look!
Love the series and seeing all the up and downs. Love the realness/honesty in showing the realities of car building and modifying. Not a Honda person but you guys did a great job with that one too. Love the builds, no matter what the price. I'd say keep mixing it up.
Now you need to run a couple RVS Technology treatments in it to keep protecting those rod bearings. We'd be happy to send you some, we have lots of happy S65/S85 owners worldwide 😎
the headaches you went thru with this build reminds me of what Im going thru now. Restoring my Celica SS-III to how toyota could of built it will be so rewarding in the end.
omg, you beautiful genius, I live in the Rust Belt, and when I replace my rotors I am going to spray paint the centers and probably do the nut that holds them. mine are disintegrating. thank you.
Couldn’t agree more with your suspension setup, have the same B6 shocks with Eibach springs. Previously had B16 coilovers and while they were great on track, absolute nightmare in NYC streets. The bottom of my car met the road more than I liked.
Great content as always. In the middle of the no start I was thinking to myself... this is exactly why I'll never trade my Honda life for the German life... but mad respect for seeing it through. And lastly, life is short and you work hard, don't sweat the cost. Drive what you love!
We had a similar wiring issue happen on my friends Celica GT-four. Toyota somehow overlooked that two plugs could be swaped and all we got was sparks when the battery was connected. Luckily no damage happened, but it took a fews days and a wiring expert to figure out what was wrong.
I like a good mix of different kind of car builds like you've been doing. It exposes me to different vehicles I'd never see otherwise as a person who is mainly just in the Honda world.
Really glad you didn’t JZ swap. I love the S65 V8 roar. Great build… but I really don’t get TE wheels. Your car, your rules though. Keep the content coming 😊
It's sitting just right now and both wheels are nice but the apex wheels suit best in my opinion. And the eventuri intake just completes the whole package. My dream car.
TE’s for the win! Ever since Ken Block started running them on his cars, it has to be one of my favorite rims, even if it is Japanese. The only other wheels that imo look as perfect on this car are BBS’s LM and a couple other styles but these are great. Yes since you are going with the black trim and accents, a gun metal or bronze would have fit it a little better, but the aesthetics are there! Such fine attention to detail and patience is why I always love watching these series. Personally the e90 is one of my dream cars and I greatly appreciated the knowledge I gained from the Speed Academy. These cars are not cheap for the regular joes out here, but you get what you pay for, but seeing an RCF built in the future would be killer series now that they are less then 30K used. Love the content guys, keep up the great work!
I think it's been a while since we've seen a Quick & Easy car done. Since the cold weather is coming, maybe a base Impreza with a little lift, winter tires, and some comfort and convenience mods to make the northern life a little easier? Something easy to find, all wheel drive, and capable
Pete, I actually love those TE37s on it! Fun and different and I think the color goes well with the body color - a little reverse contrast makes it unique!
Still think you guys need to do an ISF build and then throw the M3 and the F in some head to head battles! Because I think even you guys are underestimating it, and not giving it it's due credit as a driver's car AND as a reliable daily saloon. That would be a fun series and shed some light on the F cars IMO!
People go spherical front control arm bushings over poly for a reason. Spherical allows for full articulation of the arm, while a harder rubber bushing restricts articulation. Beyond, spherical front control arm bushings introduce very little NVH…
Loving the content guys! An Older Mercedes build would be an amazing series on this channel!!! Om606 swap!!! Something completely different than your normal builds. Mechanical fuel injection, big turbo, lots of smoke…now we’re talking!
So, BMW had finally started to use spherical bushings where the arms would twist under load and you add hardened rubber bushings back in? Kinda backwards if you ask me :D In all cars before, people are paying good money for aftermarket arms with sphericals :D :D
Thats the trend to do sphericals and for track use yes its certainly the way to go. I wanted to try how all rubber would feel like given how bad our roads are. Make sense?
@@speedacademy I heard a lot of feedback that it doesn´t impact ride quality much if you stay mostly rubber bushing on the rest, so I´ll give them a try. Let us know your experience :)
I had a similar mistake like that. I had a check engine light for about six months. AC wasn’t working all kinds of stuff but car ran perfect checked all my fuses. It turns out a positive wire that connects to my top of my battery was not tight and that fixed everything to be in six months to find that.
I want to find one of these and equip it with BBS LM's.. It's a Dream look, though the 5 Series is at the top of the list. Have you checked your Ground? Oh wow, it was ground related.. So glad you guys worked it out.
Recently picked up a 2010 E90 M3, DCT as well and did the RB/TA maintenance along with Ohlins with the spherical bearing for the front control arm. I also did the ESS G1+ blower and the Do88 coolers as well. Been fighting an idle stumble whenever the car starts and a low speed stumble between 1000 and 1500rpm. Made me go look at the negative terminal out of curiosity LOL. It was correctly connected so thats not it LOL... These are great cars, coming from my most recent toy which was a AMG GTR many thought it was a step backwards. I feel its a step forward, V8 sounds with the DCT and blower make for a fun but inconspicuous sedan
IND sells gloss/matte painted roundels on the the edge so you can avoid the vatozone all black roundels. They have a huge wait period for turnaround time now tho. FYI.
PT, the TE’s are one of the best choices for the E9X platform BUT I think you missed out on a huge opportunity by not going for a bold choice with a Mag Blue set! That coupled with the OG TE Blue Rays decals would be SO good. I’ve absolutely loved watching this series though, an E92 M3 is my all time dream car and this has me more excited than ever to own one soon!
Stay humble and keep an open mind when working on new things. Stuff like that always happens. I feel the pain lol I’m guessing the low voltage of the can systems wasn’t enough to trip the fuse
Like both types of builds to give perspective, budget and high end. W204 C63 is a sick car too, add headers and tune and it’s absolutely transformed, handles amazingly too but and it’s a big BUT…the M156 6.2 V8 has its issues too, an absolute beast of an engine but AMG engineers must have been on some serious mind altering drugs designing that thing with the stupid issues it has, all fixable of course but definitely hurts the wallet too!
I want to love the TE's but the silver just isn't working. Definitely better outside but they would look amazing on a red/blue/whatever car. I'm not a huge fan of block wheels but black might look pretty sleek on there or TE37 Saga bronze (no idea what color options are available). Great comeback for this car. It's a super cool platform. Fun to see such a thorough build. And like you said, BMW really hits the mark for sports luxury.
The no dipstick thing was my only real worry when I had mine. The first long trip I took in it I kept getting low oil warnings which freaked me out and turned out to be false anyway, just had to run a little over fill capacity so it didn't read low running long trips and of course keep an extra bottle or two of 10w60 in the trunk just in case lol. As always great video, I personally would have gone black on the Volks but they still look pretty damn good.
Amazing build. Great work as always guys. I think the TE's should have been in a darker colour. it doesnt match very well and looks odd on the car as the silvers just so light. Love the wheels just not the right colour for the car.
Instead of throwing parts and pulling the car apart, figure out what CAN line is being killed and remove each individual module on that CAN circuit until you don't have failures. This can ID the faulty module. From there check power, ground, and communication wires to the faulty module.
Titanium Silver is an OG Rays color and one of the best finishes they offer, alongside OG Bronze. The VS5-RSs looks good too. Give the TEs some time, I think they'll grow on you.
For people to keep on mind as I finish the no-start bit: E9X and later gens have faults in the modules that will put the car into no-start. That many errors can indicate one of the modules going bad. A friend of mine has a side hobby of buying these no-start cars, swap the modules and reprogram tbe DME and turn then back out as used and working cars again.
Love the e9x cars but I firmly believe if you are looking for a good v8 car that’s great on track and usable for easy weekend driving you can’t beat the z/28 🤷🏼♂️
Love the suspension upgrades, if not the base 318i spec black grills / other tat. Might as well switch one exhaust tip out for fake whilst you're at it :)

@@speedacademy I heard a lot of feedback that it doesn´t impact ride quality much if you stay mostly rubber bushing on the rest, so I´ll give them a try.
Let us know your experience :)
@@speedacademy makes sense. Hopefully they’re “Hamilton Spec.” 😅
Those TEs would probably look way better in gunmetal...
Glad you got it running. It's quite the machine. Track Battle V2 next year??
I had a similar mistake like that. I had a check engine light for about six months. AC wasn’t working all kinds of stuff but car ran perfect checked all my fuses. It turns out a positive wire that connects to my top of my battery was not tight and that fixed everything to be in six months to find that.
I want to find one of these and equip it with BBS LM's.. It's a Dream look, though the 5 Series is at the top of the list. Have you checked your Ground? Oh wow, it was ground related.. So glad you guys worked it out.
Great video. Keep enjoying that wonderful machine
Congratulations on the rebirth of your motor, music is right. It would be amazing to see a redux of your track battle.
6:35 😂😂😂 Pete, you may not know but that stance is the preferred method of F-15 maintainers when they are working under the jet. Doin' me proud 🥺🥺🥺😂
They are the best sleepers with oem wheels and a blower
Been there too many times … congrats on the solution. HUGE relief !
This turned out fantastic and a great recovery from the track day blues. With all the money in the BMW now does the Civic get more upgrades?
IND sells gloss/matte painted roundels on the the edge so you can avoid the vatozone all black roundels. They have a huge wait period for turnaround time now tho. FYI.
One of my favorite build series. Only M3 Chassis to ever and always to have a NA V8.
Hyper mag blue for the te37 wheels paired with stud conversion kit👍🏼
Like both types of builds to give perspective, budget and high end.
W204 C63 is a sick car too, add headers and tune and it’s absolutely transformed, handles amazingly too but and it’s a big BUT…the M156 6.2 V8 has its issues too, an absolute beast of an engine but AMG engineers must have been on some serious mind altering drugs designing that thing with the stupid issues it has, all fixable of course but definitely hurts the wallet too!
Those APEX's are astonishingly beautiful
The TE37's in satin bronze would look killer on the silver paint.
Amazing build. Great work as always guys. I think the TE's should have been in a darker colour. it doesnt match very well and looks odd on the car as the silvers just so light. Love the wheels just not the right colour for the car.
I'd love to see or at least hear more on this car. It just sounds and looks so damn good
Hell yes a 40 minute episode
Time to watch it at work 😂
Build, race, break, repeat... as it goes! Enjoyed seeing the redemption of the M3
Instead of throwing parts and pulling the car apart, figure out what CAN line is being killed and remove each individual module on that CAN circuit until you don't have failures. This can ID the faulty module. From there check power, ground, and communication wires to the faulty module.
Thanks for documenting the whole process! Wheels look so good. Choice
Titanium Silver is an OG Rays color and one of the best finishes they offer, alongside OG Bronze. The VS5-RSs looks good too. Give the TEs some time, I think they'll grow on you.
Don't like the TE37 at all in this car (much prefer the OEMs over those), but the other alternative you had looked beast!
I enjoyed every bit of this series. Thank you SA!
Nice suspension upgrade. 👍
I like the height. I am in the process of raising up my Volkswagen right now pretty much doing same thing you’re doing
W build i was hoping youd get a new engine for it and im glad you did as well as those mods very tasteful another win for speed academy
Love the e9x cars but I firmly believe if you are looking for a good v8 car that’s great on track and usable for easy weekend driving you can’t beat the z/28 🤷🏼♂️
Is there a way to add a dipstick? I’m sure there is some gear head that thought of it?
Nice work guys love the BMW content how about a beater E60 build?
I love some TEs but on a BMW I prefer a wheel with narrow spokes. I think the Apex wheels in Anthracite would look really good.
Love the suspension upgrades, if not the base 318i spec black grills / other tat. Might as well switch one exhaust tip out for fake whilst you're at it :)
37:40 There are a couple of vendors that do a dipstick conversion for these, I believe.
Dp:It feels like you're just debadging it outta spite.
Pete unconvincingly: no no no...
I had a similar problem on my gen 2 mini ground strap went bad and suddenly wouldn’t start. It looked fine but wasn’t.
Was genuinely thinking ground issue straight away.
