By far. In terms of driving home the gravity of the situation, this one hits harder than all 3 of the previous eos combined. However, I’ve heard all this type of stuff before. It was the boring details I wanted to hear about the process of volunteering there as I want to go over. But not for the dramatic stuff.. There’s a lot of stuff they need manpower for that isn’t dangerous, but still valuable. From caring for animals in the overflowing shelters to electricians. Funny enough, it’s exactly what I expected. It’s only for people who can be independently helpful, self-starting and resourceful and that as long as you’re truly helping, you’ll have free reign and people to help you get around red tape.

As for driving over landmines; I've a friend who did so twice in the Rhodesian war, his description of it is stark: total noise, utter surprise, complete silence, check everyone, help anyone who can be, get away from the vehicle (in case of ambush).

This was the most moving out of all of the interviews you've done. The way Brandon talks about his experience and the feelings that caused him to stop doing civilian work really hits hard. I absolutely couldn't blame him for stopping. I can't imagine the frustration of risking your life to save someone who then refuses to go with you. All I can say is I'm glad he made it out of there and helped as many people as he did. Not being scared isn't courage it's stupidity. Courage is being scared and doing it anyway. And deciding to stop endangering yourself when you know you could be doing more elsewhere isn't cowardice. Sometimes it's just the smart thing to do.

I have seen his videos of the evacuations. Some of those people are truly mad, props to all the people doing civilian evacuations, that has to be a truly demanding job with little gratitude from the people they rescue. Quite a few families or seniors had to have volunteers come 3-4 days in a row, sit and talk, share coffee, cigarettes, alcohol and bring them food and fuel just to keep convincing them that being in the only house left standing with Russians looking for targets to mortar isn't a good idea.

I kept google earth to the side when listening to Brandon's stories and it got me hooked up at these old pictures of views around Soledar and old reviews on little shops around the place. It reminds how communities have gotten and are still getting destroyed by this useless war. I just can't imagine how it really is to have the whole world around you get obliterated.
On one side I understand that it is frustrating that people like Brandon risk(ed) their lives for these old Babushka's who don't even want to leave in the first place. But on the other side, looking at my own grandparents, their world gets smaller with the years. Friends and family pass away or move on with their lives differently, so the circle of people around them grow smaller and smaller. There in Ukraine, with all the youth leaving, they must experience ten-fold of the loneliness that people here in western Europe are experiencing. It must be really scary to leave everything they still have behind; their home with all the memories of better times.

Writing as a designated Geriatric, I can suggest a reason why some grandmothers do not want to leave:
Example, my son or sons grew up here to be men, they know where their mother is and their home if ever they need me. I don't know where they are now but they know where I am, waiting. They know me, everything around me are the things they grew up with, it is their home.
Because, I am their mother and will be until I die.

    • @jgw9990
      @jgw9990 7 месяцев назад

That reason is getting other grandmother's children killed though when they have to try and evacuate underfire. Not just in Ukraine, this stubborn behaviour endangers rescue workers in most situations.

This has been said to you before and it'll be said again, but this is proper IWM resource stuff. You are a superb interviewer: empathetic but not intrusive, prompting and guiding but not dominating, always asking intelligent questions or making insightful observations. I really hope that some folk from the Imperial War Museum will see these excellent interviews and speak to you about making use of them. I used to teach History and I really respect this as an amazingly credible secondary source that puts our news outlets to shame.

That reminds me of back in 5th grade when our English teacher was disappointed that we were using the same boring adjectives each day: Crazy, funny, interesting! What is actually enough to briefly respond to anything, if you think about it. She made a bet with us. If we could list 20 adjectives there would be no homework. Everybody only allowed to name one each. I don't remember if we made it or not, but it was close. 😂

A comparison for the language question is the island of Ireland. Everyone can speak English, but not everyone can speak Irish. Some want to be British, but most want to be Irish, despite only speaking English.
Language is a big part of identity, but it's NOT the only part of someone's identity.
(The comparison of English and Irish doesn't quite work on a linguistic level as Russian and Ukrainian are quite similar, like Spanish and Portuguese, or German and Dutch).

I think, if it’s not crass to compare two wars over two centuries apart, this war is Ukraine’s “war of 1812”.
A much larger neighbour with similar cultural heritage invades a country, as it assumes that it’s people are unhappy with their current government’s attachments overseas. The invasion was assumed to be a quick victory, which is all the invaders planned for. However, while the inhabitants of the border region may not be thrilled with their current government, it turns out they dislike being invaded a hell of a lot more.

Yup, and international support was underwhelming due to other concerns (Napoleon in that case) so Canadian militias ended up doing all the fighting until the very end of the conflict, leading to a peace that left the Canadians where they were at the start... and the Haudenosaunee got completely screwed over by both sides.

It's a tale as old as time, a large regional power wants to subsume a neighbour to further their own security interests.
It's a logic that's difficult to escape without a large alliance or Hegemon.
Ukraine is a prelude to the new state of the world of our Unipolar moment ends.

@@teagame1011 Obviously someone is making a profit of of it, someone has to make the weapons, but that doesn't mean the war wasn't started by a dictator with imperial ambitions. "Muh MIC" did not spend the last 15 years undermining Ukraine with propaganda or arm and support criminal gangs in the Donbas. "Follow the money" is a very intellectually lazy approach to determining culpability and it usually leads to the wrong conlusions.
