I was at the game and it was all set up for Balmain to make the semis: Manly beat Canterbury the day before and all we had to do was win 😔 I remember the talk the next day was about the controversial missed conversion from Miranda..... I had always thought it happened in the second half. This was Dennis Bendall’s last game as well John Muggleton’s last game for Balmain before joining Parra.
Bloody hell all of those very close loses by Balmain gave Canterbury their opportunity to scrape into 5th place then get on that famous charge to the Grand Final. They easily beat Wests, Cronulla and Parramatta before losing the Grand Final to St George 17.13. Canterbury were absolutely brilliant in the 1979 Semis
Wow Balmain were heading for a Semi Final berth in 1979 but bombed out badly at the back end .They were in the Top 5 pretty much all season reaching to the top of the table at one point . They ended up losing their last 3 matches 11-10 to Parramatta , 11-8 to Cronulla and this game here 12-11 to Souths . If they just won this game here they would have scraped into 5th spot pushing past The Bulldogs who lost their round 22 match to Manly 23-11 at Brookvale . The Tigers were oh so close . Yesterdays fish & chips paper now of course , but if they had won those last 3 close games they would have finished in the top 3 .
@@graguitar6493 Yep The Tigers won 27-20 in round 5 , scoring 5 tries to 2 . Dragons George Grant had 8 shots at goal that day for 7 successes . 6 of them were penalty shots which helped keep the score kinda close . Balmain won the round 16 clash 20-7 at Kogarah .
@@MERCURYSUNSET George Grant won alot of games that year from he's boot. A 1 season wonder who picked the right season. Felt a bit sorry for Johnny Jansen though. He and rocket teaming up with Graeme Wynn would have made an amazingly damaging back row that year. JJ was never as impactful after he's ACL injury and Wynnie became very inconsistent
And they did basically the exact same thing in 1967, Lost their last 3 minor premiership matches by 2 points or less to miss the semis by one competition point.
Notice how quickly the tackler gets off the tackled player? These days (a tactic brought in by Storm I believe) the tacklers will lie all over the player and look around to see if their mates are back in position. The rule was that you had to get off immediately.
Last game of the season and nothing but dirt in the middle of the paddock. How different to today's perfectly manicured grounds. You would get tackled and graze your knees or thigh up to your butt cheek, it would just about be healed and first tackle next week you ripped all the new skin off again. Oh the memories...😅❤
Despite winning the final round match against Balmain, Souths sacked coach Jack Gibson not long after the win. Souths had a very disappointing season in 1979, after a very good season in 1978 where they just missed the finals. Sacking Jack Gibson as Souths coach after only 2 years was stupid & dumb by the Souths management. I think that Souths might have been finalists, even a premiership threat in the early 1980s if Jack Gibson stayed as coach. Over a year later after leaving Souths, Jack Gibson was appointed coach of Parramatta, & look what happened!! 🏆🏆🏆 If only the Souths management had the faith in Jack Gibson as coach, well anything would have been possible. A opportunity missed by Souths.
Jack Gibson said during that period at Souths, it was extremely frustrating as a committee were involved in chosing his side not only him. He called them hangers on, ex players that ate and drank at the club free and decided who made his teams for the weekend ahead. Extremely frustrating to say the least. In saying that Bill Anderson took over and did very well. But yeh crazy to not let Gibson have the free reign, definitely politics and power from people who should have been moved on from the board etc. But Canterbury took full advantage of Balmain's loss and played amazing footy throughout the semis.
Doesn't surprise me that Jack Gibson was constantly interfered with team selection at Souths. Too many Souths people having a say living off past glories thinking that they would do a better job than Gibson. Just ridiculous that it was allowed to happen. When Jack Gibson won those premierships at Parramatta, after leaving Souths, I have to wonder if those Souths people regretted their selfish, interfering, controlling ways? No wonder why Souths struggled a bit for a long time after the early 70s, too many old Souths people living off past glories. Parramatta obviously gave Gibson total control as coach & the results were ultimately legendary. It could have been so different if Jack Gibson was respected by the Souths people. He might have never went to Parramatta & won the 3 in a row there. 🏆🏆🏆
@absolutebore I need to say this that Bill Anderson did very well at Souths after Jack Gibson left. Bill Anderson had a great year as coach in 1980, getting Souths into the finals for the first time since 1974 & overall had a good 3 years coaching Souths. They were unlucky not to be higher up the ladder in his time as coach.

Lloyd Martin and David Grant were two of the best of that Balmain era.

Absolutely correct- I remember doing the same in club footy during the cold ‘n wet Sydney winters- awesome memories!
