8:20 I think in English the most common word for those words that join two sentences is 'conjunction', or at least that is what I learnt at school...
Also I think 'but rather' is used more as an intensifier of surprise in English, normally when you want to express something that confounds the expectation of the audience or define something in a new and unexpected way - especially in writing - similar to ''sino más bien" in Spanish. In a political/business context "it's not the fault of X, but rather the consequence of Y" would seem the most natural use of it, IMHO.
I would say 'sino' a secas would more naturally translate as 'but instead'.
I was thinking this as well, "instead" sounds much more natural.
