18:52, In the summer when there is a worst bad weather monsoon season in the South China sea that runs from June until October, they have to detour to Kagoshima and Guam airspace to avoid the worst bad weather and turbulence in the South China sea.
They detour and take the more eastern route when there's bad weather near the Hong Kong and Guangzhou FIR which is common in the summer months. Now, the better detour would be to head north from Manila, hug the western coast line of Taiwan while continuing to fly north then finally switch back to Shanghai FIR north of Taipei and east of Wenzhou at the Shanghai/Taipei IFR handover point and fly West. However, only direct flights between mainland China and Taiwan is allowed to use this handover point, and also international flights to and from mainland China also aren't allowed to use Taiwan airspace at all. That's why they have to fly much further east and spend an extra hour, though the flight scheduel is padded to allow that route to be taken so you'd usually still be ontime arriving into Shanghai, and if the shorter route is taken then it's common to be an hour ahead of schedule. Interestingly mainland China does allow international flights to and from Taiwan to overfly mainland airspace, but they are still not allowed to use the more convenient handover point north of Taipei to go into China. They have to fly south towards HongKong, get handed over to the Hong Kong FIR, then once they reach the Hong Kong/Shenzhen handover point be handed over to Guangzhou FIR by Hong Kong FIR - no direct handover between Taipei and Guangzhou FIR. Before the Ukrian war CI/BR typically head north and fly over Russia for their flights to Europe but since then Taiwanese airlines have been prohibited into Russian airspace so that route is not usable anymore.
In fact, all curved (not straight) routes between Chinese mainland and Taiwan are required by Taiwan. Because Taiwan is afraid that PLA soliders will land in Taiwan quickly by civil aircraft. On the other hand, Chinese mainland is not worried at all that Taiwan will use civil aircraft to attack the mainland.

Recommendation: fly on air Asia a321 it’s pretty comfortable in a 3-3 config with usb A ports in the arm rests but no adjustable headrest sadly
