It’s like a non-stop game of Tetris in that apartment. Just so you know, we all admire your organization and passion for collecting physical media. If you move to a bigger place, would love to see those architectural skills first hand to craft a custom made wraparound CD shelving system. I’d predict that video would have the largest number of views ever!
Great efficient use of space, filling dead space. Practical to use stacks as end tables, Credenzas, etc. Could put a cloth table cover over a stack for waf, lamp on top. Yes, I am familiar with never ending Tetris game, but if enjoyable hobby, it's just more good physical activity, exercise 😝
Man, I’m just trying to solve my CD clutter issue. If I had that many boxes I’d be trying to look for videos on how to store boxes. Kidding, sort of. Great content!
More power to you, Brendon, for having the passion and dedication to maintain such a huge collection, but for me, when it gets to the point where I wouldn't be able to display or access them conveniently, it'd become pointless and impractical. And as much as I love holding the physical medium and liner notes in my hands, there are high-quality streaming services available for anything I'll listen to only occasionally. Part of it is "the age thing": I'm only going to be around for a few more decades, so maintaining a huge collection just doesn't carry the importance it did when I was in my 20s or 30s. Not to put you down for doing so, of course, because I can understand the thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of owning full discographies (of which I still have several, don't get me wrong!). Cheers!
Yeah I can totally understand that. And there are times I don’t want to move the boxes to access one CD. But in the end I’m always glad I have it even if it took some work to get there.
hey brendon wow 11,000 cds brother thats cool. i probably own around 300 (but i never count and i donate ones i do not listen to) i been working on my Meat Loaf collection the past 2 to 3 years finally found his stuff. at this point i got 10 out of 12 meat loaf studio albums. and my elvis collection that is another thing all together. but music is awesome. i am always open to new artists and old ones i missed. great video brother. your friend from canada eh mike
Man what a great video. Love these get a glimpse behind the scene's things, really nice addition to your other video's. You've really helped rekindle my enjoyment of listening. That new Accept blew me away.
I’m glad you enjoyed it getting see a little bit more about me and my collection. Yes that new Accept is outstanding. It’s been moving up my list as one of their best.
Hi Brendon, I found this a fascinating video. I love your creative way of storing such a huge collection in a limited space. I think most people have storage issues for their music collections so this was very useful. Thank you - Phil
You’re welcome Phil! Always glad to know a video like this is interesting to others. After making it, I had second thoughts thinking no one would care. Glad to know I was wrong 😂.
Yeah I wish that it would turn up on a compilation or bonus track. Joe Lynn Turner is one of those artists that has sung in so many great bands that Rhino Records needs to do a proper compilation for him and include some rarities like Heartless.
🙂👍. Dedication and care! Way to go, Brendon! I applied your box creation video and love my results. I truly appreciate your sharing this storage solution. I do not have as many as you do, but it all works very well for me. I labeled mine with tidy removable alphabetical stickers. Left some room in each for integrating new ones. Have one or two boxes dedicated to brand new ones that are listened to and to be filed. For digpaks, I put them in archival sleeves and store them in cute little wooden crates that I find at the Dollar Tree. A couple of little white bookshelves hold these crates. I prefer jewel cases. I do have an inventory that I update regularly as well. I am just starting to enter my vinyl and CDs on Discogs. Rock on! - Heather.
Glad to hear the system works for you too! We do what we can with what we got. One day it would be great to have that big massive wall of nothing but CD’s!
It must suck having to store your collection like this. I have shelves for mine & part of the joy of having it is actually looking at them on the shelves in all their glory like my own small music library.
Would be cool some day to see that entire collection on display on shelves. Seems like they’d be much easier for you to access, but I get it with space issues. I’m sure tossing all of those boxes around on a daily basis does something for you to keep you in good shape physically.
Lol, only have a bit over 6000 cds and organization is a problem for me. Own a house myself and can be overwhelming but not going to stop buying music. An addictive passion that in no hurry to give up. Thanks Brendon. Congrats on 8K scribes as so deserving of it as really must see posts. Always on point and very well done. 👍
I agree that I will never stop buying cds. But what happens when you eventually run out of room. Guess you can buy a lottery ticket and hopefully you'll win and have enough money to buy a nice house where you can buy even MORE cds.💿
I used to be like that. Have CDs scattered everywhere, under everything, until i started using those spacesaver sleeves. I know most people hate them but they save a TON of room AND you have access to ALL of them.
God bless my friend love your passion for music I’m right there with you. Cheers from the Captain.👊 BTW loving the new Saxon album going to be tough to beat come year end.
perfect timing for me...i reviewed an older video of yours a couple of weeks ago...started making the boxes and was wondering about access...(kinda like the aesthetic too)...in the process i found a lot of cds that i had played once, a few never opened...as i had cds scattered in haphazard piles all over the place...anyway, i pleased with your system on several levels...thanks
I know the feeling. After my divorce I had to move my collection (6700 studio album cd's). And when you move to a smaller apartment, it is challenging. I'm now just waiting until I can get a place with enough space. A lot of discs (mostly compilations) are in storage. So I know the struggle. Keep up the cool content!
Sorry I don't comment much but I watch most of your videos on my tv but I was gonna say about the boxes being on top of one another I would be scared my cd's would get damaged but hopefully you don't have any problems with them.
Brendon, I use small crates in the bedroom that hold about 23 CDs plus I have others combos in the bedroom to hold CDs. I’ll count up how many CDs I have in the bedroom and get back to you.
Loved the video, Brendon. How I know that yours is the right system is that after removing all the boxes you pulled out the right cd, Live in Detroit. Hahahaha.
Hey Brendan I know the feeling I have over 4000 cds in boxes.100cd box sets..I hope they are iinsured.I live on the island and have the upstairs bedroom as a audio equipment, speakers, cd room...and its screaming to be put in order...grew up in LIC and Sunnyside, last place I lived was in Astoria before moving out to West Islip...Man O Man...LIC has exploded... I always like your videos...Take care my man....
Its great you have that many CDs i have a fair few cds here but i just have shelving here and i dont have them in any order because if i look for something i may find something i havent played in a while instead.
Hi Brendon, interesting to see your storage issues and solutions here! I have only about 200CD's and 200vinyl and already I am running out of space but I have about 1000 books and 200 board games which take up the bulk of the space even though I have a 3 bedroom house. I can understand why you live in NY City I have been a couple of times and loved it. Maybe I will take another trip one day.
Hi Paul! Yeah if it wasn’t for all the city has to offer I would have left years ago. Still may have to at some point. But I do the best with what I’ve got. Books is another hard one. I’ve got 3 different bookshelves filled around my apt too.
You should invest in wooden produce crates for your vinyl records. Check your local grocer (or retailer where produce is sold) for that. Or buy a piece of furniture where you can place your turntable atop with a cupboard underneath to store your vinyl. That's what I have. I also have a wooden produce crate. And Brendon's boxes apparently came from Staples. I imagine you could order these online via Staples. Foot lockers work, too.
Amazing but wow what a huge effort and space killer. I only have a quarter of your collection as I sold off a big part of my collection that I never listened to but it never was or is going to be as big as yours. I stopped being an artist collector a long time ago - just buy the albums I know I will keep going back to or have a special place for me. About 10 years ago I invested in jewel sleeves and did away with the cases and store everything in drawers. This greatly reduced the amount of room I needed and the collection is in nice looking wooden drawers. One in the living room, one in the dining room and one in the study. That said I probably need to by another chest of drawers as they're all super tight so adding CDs has become harder as I store them alphabetically by artist (need to leave room for new additions). The other benefit is you can slip in CDs without the missus finding out about it as they're all tucked away - having to buy another chest of drawers though means there's a reckoning coming ;)
Yeah that’s one of my boxes I haven’t done yet. Maybe for a future 5 Favorite Boxsets episode. Or whenever the new Album gets released I might tie it in and do a separate review then.
If my wife ever complains about my bookcase with about 300 cd’s, I will show her this. I do have a couple racks in a cove to hold/display my autographed collection. Spacious relatively inexpensive houses out here in northwest NJ!
I need one of those spacious houses…haha! Now if you show your wife this video it could backfire showing her how big your collection could grow to and she might become even more worried 😂
Thanks for the behind the scenes viewing of how and where you choose to store your music collection. Don't mean to be nosy but what kind of square footage is your apartment. Wouldn't mind working on a math equation on approximating how much space you have left for craps and giggles 🤔 before it becomes a serious problem 🤣 once again thanks for the insight and keep rocking out and enjoying your music collection 🤘✌️
That link is the description as part of the How To video for making the boxes, I got into detail in that video. There is no link to the purchase of the boxes. They’re not name brand and can be any “banker” box you want. All banker boxes are a standard size and will work. I recommend Staples as an option but there are lots while sell those boxes including Amazon.
You’ve got plenty of room to grow for the moment…but if you keep watching my channel, just a warning…your collection will continue to grow and grow like mine!
Appears you don't write on the ends of the box to describe contents. I assume this is to allow changing contents, box reuse One option is to use sticker labels on the end , allowing I'd by color, shape or write on sticker label. Label can be removed with heat gun to not damage box, then put another on to reuse, or just put another label on top of old one. Name of the game if going all in on large physical media collecting is lowest cost per unit of media for storage. I use scrap adhesive labels so added cost is "free"
Wow thats crazy. I have a question though, how long did it take you to amass that huge collection. I mean, thats like 100,000 dollars worth of CDs, you must be spending a fortune on CDs
32 years of collecting and no not all are bought at full price. Lots are used and at lower prices. Still yes, it’s a lot of money. But then people who go drinking every weekend spend as much money. I don’t drink so for me it goes to CD’s.
Hi Brendon.I understand your space problem. It's like that for every collector. Do you know which cd is in which box? You have an awesome collection, my friend. Cheers 🤘
Hi Andy, I don’t always know exactly which box, but I know what stack and each stack is alphabetized by genre or type. That’s why some stacks are taller than others.
What a tremendous collection of CDs you have! I wonder how you find the CD you want to listen inside these? Do you have some kind of category or method that can guide you?
Each stack is of a particular genre or type. Then each stack and bock is alphabetical. So I know where to go and about how many boxes to remove to find what I’m looking for.
Massive collection, Brendon. WOW!! Very impressive. How do you fit that many cd's (90) in one box? And do you label these boxes? How do you know which box is which? You and Pete are officially millionaires with what you possess.
@@BrendonSnyder I always think the same thing when I daydream about selling music. The way great store owners churn inventory on used stuff is an art and a science.
This is very impressive. I have about 3500 CDs and I have a small room / large closet that I keep most of them in. How do you know what is in each box? It would seem if you get a new CD, lots of CDs would have to be moved around in multiple boxes if you kept them in any sort of alphabetical order. BTW, how does the portable air conditioner work (at 2:38)? I was going to get one but I had heard mixed results on how well they work.
Hi Shane! Each stack is a genre and then the boxes are alphabetized. Regarding the A/C…after years of window units I like the portable much better. It’s quieter, and I can remove the hose from the window on days I’m not using it instead of always having the window open. In NYC the outside can be very noisy so I like to keep the windows shut if not running the AC. The brand that I bought is made by two groups Koldfront and Midea. I think one main company may own both.
Architects make good money, come on, one extra room is all you need for your fabulous collection to be displayed properly! 😉 Oh well, maybe one day as you said…
I have a weekly series called What’s That You’re Listening To, where I go into why I picked what albums/bands to listen to. See link for the latest episode ruclips.net/video/ttka78lsK1c/видео.html
Like the video Brendon but I'm intrigued as to how long it takes to find a certain cd.For example if you wanted to pull the classic Stevie Nicks album ' Bella Donna' How would you know where it is?
Each stack is a genre like the one I was in was 12 boxes of Glam Metal. Each box is alphabetized so I knew to go down 4 boxes to hit the letter D for Def Leppard. So not to long at all to find what I want.
What is your system for keeping track of what CD is in each box? BTW, I like how you store them. Have been curious about it, especially being in NYC and familiar with its small apartments.
Hi Peter! My system is pure memory power. But each stack is a genre and then the boxes in the stack are alphabetized. As for the boxes, I made a video about them if you’re interested, see link ruclips.net/video/ttka78lsK1c/видео.html
That's great, but how do you know where is what? Let's say you want to listen to a specific cd, do you know in which box to find it? (alphabetical, x-cel document,...?). Cheers.
Don’t worry, I’ve got room to grow…first I will get rid of my bed and sleep on my CD’s, then I will stop cooking and use all of my kitchen cupboards and my oven as storage for more CD’s….finally I will create a new floor made out of CD’s 😂
An interesting video but you have to ask yourself do you really need that many CDs? There is pleasure in having a comprehensive collection which offers ease of access for sure. However when the boxes are creating all that clutter and a potential fire hazard it’s time to draw the line. I just wouldn’t want to go to a CD that was so inaccessible, for example in the bottom box of that wall of boxes. I would just pick something else. Also not being able to see the CDs to select from means you have to try to remember what’s in all the boxes - an impossible task! My suggestion is to cull it all to a max of 2000 and then cash in by selling the rest on eBay while they are still in demand! However the Grand Funk Trunk of Funk I spied on top of all the boxes is definitely a keeper!
Well a couple things Glenn, I’d question how die hard of a music fan you are if you can give up on what you want to hear because it’s not immediately accessible. That said, I think I showed you just how easy it all is so it’s not work for me. You do what you can with what you have and I think I make it work well. Now regarding your comment about this being a “fire hazard”. In what way makes any of this a fire hazard? First of all path of travel is not blocked, and if you’re referring to cardboard boxes being flammable, so is everything else in a home like carpet, curtains, furniture….all wood and fabrics which love to burn. But it’s also not like this can spontaneously combust so not sure how it’s going to suddenly catch fire and be a fire hazard. Remember I’m an architect, I wouldn’t create a life safety issue for myself.
I get the boxes from Staples but they are sold everywhere. See link for a video on how to make the boxes with more info ruclips.net/video/fbV8Z16nIEE/видео.html
Each stack is of a particular genre or type. Then each stack and the contents inside are alphabetized. So I generally know right where to go. Probably should have mentioned I was going right for that Def Leppard when I started moving the boxes because I knew where it was. That stack of 12 is all Glam Metal.
Hello Brendon!!! How many boxes can be stacked before weight becomes an issue? I also use the banker's boxes, but was wondering how high you think one can stack them to avoid crushed boxes or stability issues. I appreciate any advice. Thanks! Rick
If the CD boxes are relatively full they are very strong. You don’t have to worry about the boxes crushing. But weight wise you do have to consider the space you live in. I live in a very old NYC apartment that have very large structural beams so i feel comfortable stacking 12 high, but that is a lot of weight. Regardless I do not believe it is enough to crash through the floor.
Hi Les, there are times I stand in front of the wall of CD’s and can’t find a single thing and then just laugh at the absurdity because I own so many. The reality is I always find something but I can take a while to hit on the right sound.
So having 30 CD's from different bands to file away requires lots of labour and reorganising . Have you contemplated moving to a larger apartment or house ? Could the apartment hold 20,000 CDs?
Of course I’ve considered moving, but there are other factors. Yes the Apt. could handle as many I want. And I only file away and re-organize once maybe twice a year….usually in the Spring. That’s my version of Spring Cleaning. 😂
Are the stacks of boxes (generally) in alpha order? In other videos, I know you've shown boxes for bands and related artists, CDs from the same genre, etc. Is that how most boxes are set up? Had my CDs in smaller boxes for awhile. Then, switched to larger storage totes (which was NOT the way to go). Finally, I got multiple shelving units, so I can access everything without having to dig. FYI -- Amazon was sold out of those Universal Japan reissues on day 1. Thankfully, importcds has them for (basically) the same price.
Well when I grow up I want to be a fireman or cowboy or have over eleven thousand albums like you I'm only sixty I've still got plenty of time we'll fingers crossed I pre ordered tears for fears and the red hot chilli peppers new ones think I'm going to get two more cheap trick two blue oyster cult and maybe two more Ozzy getting close to the scorpions can't wait got two arriving Tuesday eleven Weds and I think Etddie bedders and slash Friday ttan't wait for those rock on brendon instill havnt got to sleep one more thing I heard
I understand the charm of shaving space and easy access. But probably 50% of what I own is not available to stream. For me that’s he issue with streaming is that not everything is licensed.
Well your love of music certainly keeps you fit, Brendon!
Yeah no other workout needed!

@@BrendonSnyder You know what I guess I'm the same but when the kids were born it just wasn't feasible.
You should do an unboxing if that smashing pumpkins box set
Yeah that’s one of my boxes I haven’t done yet. Maybe for a future 5 Favorite Boxsets episode. Or whenever the new Album gets released I might tie it in and do a separate review then.
@@BrendonSnyder cool
I have 32 CD:s so ... not a problem, my vinyl records on the other hand ... Thanks for your interesting channel.
You’re welcome Tony! Good luck with storing your many records.
Best solution for your vinyl records is either a foot locker or cedar chest.
It’s really tiny and wouldn’t normally state that but it’s only about 350 Sq Ft. Yes those boxes take up quite a lot but I love my music.
just noticed that you hit 8K subs...congrats
Thank you! Much appreciated! 🤘
Great video I relly enjoy it thank you
You’re welcome Landon! Have a great day!
Hi Brendon, amazing content as always! Can you add the link to the banker style boxes you use for your collection? Much appreciated! Keep rocking!
That link is the description as part of the How To video for making the boxes, I got into detail in that video. There is no link to the purchase of the boxes. They’re not name brand and can be any “banker” box you want. All banker boxes are a standard size and will work. I recommend Staples as an option but there are lots while sell those boxes including Amazon.
when you have too much,
I will take it 😊✌️
You’ll be the first person I notify!
Fascinating!
👍
Amazing! Thanks for the tour. I have a CD shelf in my room. It holds 250 CDs. I currently own 175 CDs.
You’ve got plenty of room to grow for the moment…but if you keep watching my channel, just a warning…your collection will continue to grow and grow like mine!
Appears you don't write on the ends of the box to describe contents. I assume this is to allow changing contents, box reuse
One option is to use sticker labels on the end , allowing I'd by color, shape or write on sticker label.
I doubt if I'll ever make it to 2K cd's...let alone 12K.
Each stack is a different genre and then it’s alphabetized.
This is the kind of collection that turns into a music store one day, physical or online. Ever think about that as a retirement gig?
I don’t know how good the store would be as I only have one of each item so stuff would always be sold out….haha
😉 Oh well, maybe one day as you said…
It’s not the cost, it’s the moving….it would be a nightmare. But it’s needed and will happen….eventually.
How do you decide what you want to hear? I have about 4000 CDs and 5000 LPs and often I stand before my collection and don't know what to play next.
Very impressive collection. Do you know how much your collection is worth 😊
No idea but I know about how much I’ve spent on it over 30+ years and it’s way more than I can insure it for.
Where did you get the shelves? I need shelves for about 1200 cds. Thanks
I made this when I was in college.
That's great, but how do you know where is what? Let's say you want to listen to a specific cd, do you know in which box to find it? (alphabetical, x-cel document,...?). Cheers.
Yeah I’m realizing that I left part of the info out, which is that each stack is a genre or type and alphabetized.
the weight on the lowermost cd's doesnt hurt the cd's?
Not at all.
Hi! Do you ever worry about getting a visit from the makers of Hoarders for the next season of the reality show? 😀
Haha…no, I think I’m a little more organized than those on their show 😂
I'd like to know your answer to the burning question of how to find what you're looking for?
Where do you buy your boxes from and what size are they
Hi Robert, you’re in luck because I made a How To video on this topic with all the info, see link ruclips.net/video/fbV8Z16nIEE/видео.html
What happens when u get a few thousand more cds , more boxes?
Hey Brendan, where do you purchase the boxes for your cds.l see they have numbers on the side. thanks!
I get the boxes from Staples but they are sold everywhere. See link for a video on how to make the boxes with more info ruclips.net/video/fbV8Z16nIEE/видео.html
Cool video. How do you know which box to find a particular cd you are looking for ?
Each stack is of a particular genre or type. Then each stack and the contents inside are alphabetized. So I generally know right where to go. Probably should have mentioned I was going right for that Def Leppard when I started moving the boxes because I knew where it was. That stack of 12 is all Glam Metal.
@@BrendonSnyder bruh I didnt know that many glam metal albums existed lol
Do you make digital copies of all your CD's??
No, not interesting in them digitally. For me it’s all about the physical interaction while listening.
Hi Brandon, Since these boxes are not labeled, how do you locate a specific CD?
Telepathy…no jk! Each stack is a specific genre and then the boxes are alphabetized. I’m in and out of them all the time and know exactly where to go.
How do you know which cd is in every box? Do you keep a file with info of every box? Are the boxes numbered?
Yes I should have elaborated further to say each stack is a type or genre and then the stack is alphabetized.
Also if I had this many cd's I wouldn't know what to listen to
Hi Les, there are times I stand in front of the wall of CD’s and can’t find a single thing and then just laugh at the absurdity because I own so many. The reality is I always find something but I can take a while to hit on the right sound.
So when you get a cd of a group you didn’t have…..and the box is full….. what do you do?
So when you say you have over 11 thousand CDs like what genre of music does it consist of the most of
Different genres of rock and metal.
Hi Jared, yes all boxes are alphabetical. The big stacks of boxes, each row is a genre, and alphabetized. Probably should have mentioned that…😂
@@BrendonSnyder Cool! Mine aren't alphabetized! But are in order LOL!🤫😄👍
Are they stored alphabetically? If not how do you find anything?
Yes of course.
Related question: I've been wondering how you keep track of which albums you own? Memory, database, Discogs, etc?
No database, just good old memory.
@@BrendonSnyder My memory serves as my own personal data base. 😄🤖💽🖥
Where you buying that boxes online?
I buy my in person from Staples but you can buy them online as well.
A ok thanks for the information. Another great video.👍
That’s a good goal to have! You’ve got plenty of time and been doing good with all your recent acquisitions of new music too.
I think I would be playing a lot of those CDs as mp3 files.
Ugh! That’s the whole point with owning these… to avoid shitty MP3s. If that’s your goal, you can just stream.
I understand the charm of shaving space and easy access. But probably 50% of what I own is not available to stream. For me that’s he issue with streaming is that not everything is licensed.
You really need a bigger place
Yes I do. That’s an understatement! 😂
I hope you don’t move too often….
Haven’t moved in a while, but I do worry about it.
