That scene with the Emperor was another one of those things they put in the updated version. Originally it was an old woman playing the Emperor (obviously a guy did the voice).
It wasn't until Return of the Jedi that Ian McDiarmid was cast as the Emperor. Lucas saw him in a Disney movie where he played an older guy and decided he would be perfect.

@leroylowe5921 I own the Despecialized Edition of the Original Trilogy and that version is the only canon version of those films IMHO. Once Lucas started tinkering with these films in 1997, they weren't the films he first released, which are far superior to the CGI tinkering he did afterwards.

Regarding lightsabers, at first there were only two colors : blue for good guys, red for bad guys. But in the Return of the Jedi, Luke had to use his lightsaber with a blue sky behind him. So to see it better, the saber was decided to be green. Then, the lore was built to explain that different colors of lightsabers mean that there were different types of Jedi : Jedi Consular (Green), Jedi Guardian (blue) and Jedi Sentinel (yellow). Years later, when Samuel L. Jackson joined the saga, he asked for a specific color : purple, his favorite color.

-Mark Hamill had facial reconstruction surgery following a motorcycle accident shortly after the release of the original Star Wars. The Wampa attack at the beginning was partly written in to explain the difference in his looks.
-The Battle of Hoth was filmed in Norway. Many of the Rebel troops were Norwegian cadets and trainees for their Home Guard and Alpine Rescue Brigade
-Yoda is puppeteered and voiced by Frank Oz, who's famous for Miss Piggy from the Muppets and Bert from Sesame Street.
-The Emperor is played by Sir Ian McDairmond, who wasn't originally cast until Return of the Jedi. This scene was filmed during the production of Revenge of the Sith for the 2004 DVD release of the Original Trilogy, alongside re-dubbing Boba Fett with Temura Morrison's voice.
-The only people who knew about the "I am your father" line before release were George Lucas, Irving Kirschner, Lawrence Kasdan, Mark Hamill, and James Earl Jones.

No.1 film of 1980, highest-grossing film of the original trilogy, among the greatest sequels of it's era and for all time.
The ongoing story of good and evil in this galaxy is entertaining.
Relationships between all the characters as these Star Wars wage on.
Han & Leia's romance, Boba Fett's original introduction, the Droids' reacting to these events and also meeting Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) are all perfection.
Luke's journey for me has had the biggest impression in the trilogy.
His growth into the realm of Jedi. mentored by Obi Wan in spirit and also the introduction of Yoda (voice of Frank Oz) is a epic highlight that you can never take away.
I remember feeling truly sorry for Luke as he discovers the darkest of secrets from Vader (Iam your.........) and totally knocked out everybody who witnessed it all.
The effects, the original score, set design, wardrobe were so in the pocket.
ESB also earned several accolades including 2 Oscars.
More than anything, Episode V set the highest bar for the films of the franchise.
Exceeding expectations and we expected the journey to end royally well with Episode VI.

the color of a lightsaber is determined when the one constructing it, finds the kybercrystal that powers the saber. kybercrystals are usually blueish white, but when touched by a force user they change color, depending on the kind of connection the force user has to it.
for example: the crystal turns blue when a jedi guardian touches it. those are very proficient in lightsaber combat, physically adept and good defenders and bodyguards. the crystal turns green when a jedi counselor touches it. they are jedi with great wisdom and a very deep understanding of the nature of the force.
there are other colors, but you get the idea. red crystals are created when a dark side force user forces all their hate in a ritual into the crystal.

I had to laugh at how concerned Tori was for R2 when he was in--then suddenly out of--the water. 🤣
Color of lightsaber indicates which "side" you're on. For Light Side and Gray Jedi (between Light and Dark), lightsabers can be of any color. But Sith and other Dark Side practitioners of the Force use red lightsabers.
Tori also looked a little surprised at how Luke was saved after dropping into the abyss. He did pretty much make a three-pointer that Allen Iverson dreamt of, steering his way right into one of those tubes.

A lot of people are pretty harsh on Han for the 'I know.' response to Leia's 'I love you.'. You weren't by the way. But I look at it as the movie shows us a Han who has pretty much worn his heart on his sleeve about how he feels about Leia, and he's been trying to convince her to admit she feels the same way. A lot of people who watch these movies close together don't really twig that three years have passed in the Star Wars universe between Star Wars and Empire. Three years of a relationship developing that they haven't seen.
Also, they couldn't get Han saying it back to Leia to sound quite right so apparently Ford went with that on a take and Lucas liked it.
Coincidentally somewhere between 6 months and a year passes between this movie and RotJ. Probably closer to the 6 months. Because again, they aren't forthcoming with exactly how much time has passed 'offscreen'.
Oh and being on edge at the end of this movie? Try waiting THREE YEARS for the next one!

    Separate comment again...
Jim Henson, the man who first gave birth to the Muppet mayhem, was a big fan of George Lucas's first Star Wars film, so much so that he eventually befriended the guy, and the two would eventually work together on the cult film "Labyrinth", along with other creators. But anyway, I'm pretty sure it was after filming had concluded on Episode V when Henson and his team invited Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, and Peter Mayhew to be guest stars on an episode of The Muppet Show (which is one of the most memorable episodes of the show, might I add), 'cause that episode aired in February of 1980 (months before the movie came out). This wasn't the first time Frank Oz (Jim's close friend and one of MANY different Muppet performers) interacted with Luke Skywalker. I HIGHLY recommend watching that episode of The Muppet Show. You'll love it! Edit: Pixar voice acting icon, John Ratzenberger, also appeared in this movie, although it's really hard to spot him.

The only significant changes made to this film were for tying the stories of the Originals and Prequels together, and there are really only three major ones. First, the Emperor's hologram seen in this movie. Originally, he was portrayed by masked actress Marjorie Eaton and voiced by actor Clive Revill. When the Prequels came out, they changed his actor altogether for that scene - Ian McDiarmid who first performed the Emperor in Return of the Jedi. And the scene itself was extended to, again, further tie the Prequels together, 'cause originally, the scene was less than about two minutes long (maybe a minute and a half, but the point is, it wasn't as long as it is now). And finally, Boba Fett. Originally, he was voiced by Jason Wingreen from All In the Family, but when Episode II came out, Wingreen's lines were re-dubbed by New Zealand actor Temuera Morrison. The rest of the alterations made to this film were mostly compository such as the Battle of Hoth. There is, however, one other notable change, and that's regarding the Wampa (the snow monster that attacked Luke at the very beginning of the movie). They filmed a scene in which Wampas attack Echo Base while the Rebels are evacuating when the Empire storms the base. They had created a Wampa costume for that scene that was also supposed to be shown when Luke escapes the Wampa cave, but the costume they used looked, in a word, STUPID. So ultimately, they cut the scene from the movie and decided to not show the Wampa in the afforementioned cave scene, aside from a couple of glimpses. For the Special Edition, a new Wampa costume was made, and so they filmed new shots of the Wampa in the cave. The new costume looks WAY better, honestly. Oh, and Han's "I know" was ad-libbed by Harrison Ford. The script had Han say, "I love you, too.", but Ford didn't wanna say it, thinking it wasn't fitting for Han. Speaking of, during the carbon freezing scene, there was originally a shadow on his shirt in certain shots, but many fans thought he was wearing a jacket. Nope. It was just a shadow. They fixed it, though, and removed the shadow. The shadow could've been from the dark lighting of the room they were filming in.

6:40 Hey Tori! What's the internal body temp of a Taun-taun? Luke warm. :3
24:10 The Trial of the Dark Side. Yoda said what Luke takes with him will be what's inside. "Vader" didn't lift his lightsaber until after Luke raised his. Luke went in prepared for danger and violence, and at the first threat immediately went into attack mode. Jedi do not seek out combat, but use it as a last resort.
As I said on your previous video, without spoiling any other movies, lightsaber colors have changed over the years, but at the time of filming Empire Strikes Back, it's a simple "Blue good, Red bad".

34:31 For the most part, the lightsaber colors are just a visual means of telling the good guys from the bad guys. But there is some lore regarding what each color means, though it usually isn't an indicator of who is more powerful.
Essentially, the color comes from a special crystal inside the lightsaber handle called a *kyber crystal.* The crystal is initially clear and colorless, but the lightsaber's owner has to use the Force to "attune" the crystal when building their lightsaber. That's when the kyber crystal takes on its color. If the owner who attunes it is a Jedi (good guy), it'll turn blue. If they are a Sith (bad guy), it will turn red.
And no, it's not like a mood ring where it's constantly changing color based on their emotions at that moment. So Luke's lightsaber wouldn't have instantly changed from blue to red if he had chosen to join Vader. And it isn't like Harry Potter's Sorting Hat, where the person doesn't know what side they're on until after the kyber crystal changes color. The color doesn't tell the user if they're gonna be a good guy or a bad guy. Not ENTIRELY accurate and will probably confuse her when she watches RotJ. Officially, the colors can vary widely upon the Jedi and the kyber crystal used. Typically, the Sith will turn their sabers red, but it has been known that there have been orange and purple among some rare Sith. With the Jedi, blue, green, black, and even white are known with yellow being one color that the Sith and Jedi share (some imagine that this is some sort of indication of the support for "grey" Jedi). It is unknown why Master Windu has a purple blade (Sam Jackson had it written into his contract that it be purple. It was originally designated as blue and even some toys had a blue saber with Master Windu), given that it usually happens to Sith, but he is the only known trained Jedi to possess one (outside of the EU).

I love how the script explains things but one has to pay attention: General Rieekan Tells Solo 'because of the asteroid activity in that system it's going to be difficult to spot approaching ships'. Then later when Vader claims General Ozzel is 'as stupid as he is clumsy', we understand by coming out of lightspeed too close they missed an opportunity to sneak in before being discovered, even possibly avoiding it.
Also seeing this in the theater is the best way to appreciate that POV speeder scene as they fly over those ridges. The eyes trick the brain making us feel like falling each time they cross, like a roller coaster.

The reason Old Ben Kenobi didn't tell Luke that Darth Vader was his father in the first film, number 4, is that when the movie was made no one knew that. No one expected Star Wars to be the huge success it was, they might have dreamed of making more Star Wars movies, but for all they knew it would flop. So many things that come up in later movies are retcons or just hadn't been thought of when the first came out. So in the first movie Vader killed Luke's father, in the second he is Luke's father.

Back even before the movie was finished and the leaked title "The Empire Strikes Back" was thought to be just a working title and an inside joke/homage to George Lucas' love of the old adventure serials with their melodramatic chapter titles, I read rumors in sci-fi movie magazines and fanzines that the movie would reveal Darth Vader to be Luke's father, so when I saw it in the theater and Vader said "No. I AM your father," I just thought "Son of a gun, the rumors are true!"

I read David Prowse, the bodybuilder who played Darth Vader revealed some of the secrets including that one in an interview. In later years he acted like he couldn't understand why Lucas didn't want anything to do with him. However, Lucas still used him as he didn't feel anyone else had the right movements for Vader. He tried to replace the very tall actor who played Chewbacca who got injured and he felt couldn't delay filming, but when watching the daylies the movements looked too stiff and it was obvious he needed the original actor. He was allowed to heal up and the filmed other scenes in the meantime.

Like for real, nearly every movie cut to Han and the gang, there are basically about to die, as they narrowly escape. Meanwhile, Luke is on the verge of a spiritual awakening, and R2D2… is straight up just chillin’ like a villain who’s out there running those mean streets of a galaxy far far away…😂

David Prowse, bodybuilder and actor who was the man under the Darth Vader costume had already revealed it in a magazine, but unlike today with no real internet besides bbs boards that only supergeeks used there was no way of spreading the info, so some superfans suspected it, but apparently the average fan had not heard of the interview. Lucas was still pissed though and wanted nothing to do with him after filming wrapped on Jedi. There were a lot of legal battles between the two as Prowse insisted he was the "real" Darth Vader.

Back in the 70s, I bought a fanzine (independently published magazine made by fans) that had a cartoon strip with the Wampa (the big snow creature) approaching Luke and Luke cutting off its arm and running away. The rest of the strip showed the Wampa picking up its severed arm and walking into the back of its cave where it has a little table set up with a little tea set and plush animals seated around the table. Then the Wampa sits down at the table a sheds a tear, obviously feeling lonely and wanting someone to play tea party with it. It was funny and sad and, of course, ridiculous. Wish I still had that fanzine so I could share the cartoon on social media, but it got tossed out long before home internet was even a thing.

The color of the lightsaber has to do with the character of the person
Blue - Blue lightsabers are said to represent righteousness, bravery, courage and protection
Green - The color green is associated with people who value wisdom, harmony, helpfulness, cooperation, spirituality and goodwill
Violet - A purple lightsaber, however, represents the balanced connection of its user with the light and dark sides of the force. (in Episode 1-3)
Yellow - it seems to symbolize the balance that has been found between the dark and the light side of the force (not personalized)
Orange - that orange lightsabers belonged only to Jedis who had sworn to use their weapons only in extreme emergencies (in a Star Wars Game)
White - the white lightsaber stands for neutrality, independence and non-affiliation to the Jedi Order. (Ashoka Series , A cleaned Red)
Red - The red lightsaber symbolizes a person who cannot control his emotions and who solves almost all of his problems with brutality, violence and ruthlessness. (Sith, synthetic)
Black - The black lightsaber represents the spirit of leadership of its owner (the series The Mandalorian)
    and Other Colours
