    SG1 alone ran for 10 seasons.

      @ieyke Месяц назад

      @johnyshadow Season one wasn't bad. But it wasn't exactly great. It seemed like it was wasting time. It was all set up and didn't really go anywhere.
      And then season 2 they started really going places and doing shit and it just kept getting weirder and more interesting and more alien.
      Just really flying into the unknown.
      For the first time really ungluing Stargate from anything familiar.
      Like there was no more connection to Earth mythology to lean on as a crutch.
      No more humanoid aliens because they were aliens stolen from Earth or whatever.
      It was genuinely flying off into the universe and encountering truly alien stuff. There was still following in the footsteps of some previous humans who used to sort of exist, but they're long gone. So there was still like an element of ancients around, but all of the active aliens were truly alien.
      And that's just something we don't get basically anywhere.
      And it wasn't just like aliens who were obviously following the same rules as humans, so that they're just humans who look like aliens. These aliens were genuinely alien and mysterious. Like you're wondering what the hell their motivations are. What do they want, what are they trying to say?
      It's hard to name anything else that does that.
      Star Trek, all the aliens are just humans and rubber masks, and they're all part of the federation, or some sort of one-off alien monster, or they are political enemies of the federation who operate by roughly human rules as if they were just another country on earth with weird tribal customs or whatever.
      Star Trek, same thing. Everything is either humanoid enough that they might as well be humans in masks, or their monsters.
      Battlestar Galactica, the cylons are just robots masquerading as humans.
      Sg1 and Atlantis, everything is some sort of variant of human aside from the asgardians, but he has Guardians are so linked to Earth mythology, and they act like humans that it doesn't matter that they're not humans. Like even the replicators make themselves look like humans, even though they're technically robot bugs.
      Arrival has actual aliens, but we barely get to see them, and that's just a movie. So we don't really get to explore too much in depth there.
      Stargate Universe it's like..... The aliens are a truly hostile species. And they come off as like Lovecraftian almost.
      They come off as like almost feral and dangerous, except for the fact that they're clearly ultra advanced. So it's more like and a race so advanced that thing see humans more like animals or pests.
      Which is so much more the classic alien thing, right? Alien abductions. Alien experiments. Somehow we never got any of that in any of Stargate, or Star Trek, over Battlestar Galactica, or anything. That never that never actually gets done. But Stargate Universe like that's at least the VIBE of the aliens.

    I always liked the use of the sarcophagus to 'resurrect' the dead. Sort of a vessel to move beyond death. It plays into the Egyptian ideas of a second life after death, mummies, burial chambers with stuff to take with them, etc. It's not expressly mentioned in the movie, but it is a very clever touch that shows someone put real thought into the worldbuilding of the story.

    • @Cau_No
      @Cau_No 4 месяца назад +7

      It's almost as the old Egyptian pharaohs, after Ra was driven out, tried to copy the concept but did not understand it to make the sarcophagus work again.
      There is also a real-life example for this: The cargo cult of Melanesia. In WW2, the indigenous people had their first contact with the modern world, the U.S: army coming with planes, radios and lots of goods they've never seen. They started to build their own things from wood to 'redirect' some of the goods from the gods to them.
      I like about this movie, that what we know about the real culture intersects with the script for the movie - down to the 'missing vowels' (The old scripts didn't have any).

    On the kissing topic:
    In 2015, a group of social scientists published a research report on this topic in American Anthropologist. The researchers utilized eHRAF World Cultures, the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample, and a selective ethnographic survey to document the presence or absence of the romantic-sexual kiss (Jankowiak, et al, 2015). They based their research on a set of 168 cultures compiled from eHRAF World Cultures (128 cultures) as well as the SCCS (27 cultures) and by surveying 88 ethnographers (13 cultures). Global ethnographic evidence suggests that romantic kissing is common in only 46% (77) of the cultures sampled. The remaining 54% (91) of cultures demonstrate no evidence of romantic kissing.

    Stargate is definitely S-Tier writing. Actual history and science that the general public had base knowledge of and taken to a fantasy level that didn't break our suspension of disbelief. The language barrier held true instead of the copout everyone knows English trope, also the language connection made sense. Too many movies tend to kill of the entire team leaving only two alive, that didn't happen here, a handful of soldiers got to return to Earth. No 'unobtanium', it's quartz. Fantastic film.

    Since you enjoyed the film so much, it would be cool to see ye react to the pilot for the TV show as well. It does a pretty good job following on from this, and laying the groundwork for a show that would run for 10 seasons. And once they get a few episodes in, there's good chemistry among the main cast. Like any of the network tv shows of that time, there are some ropey episodes, but overall its pretty solid, and there are some really great episodes (and some very good sci-fi ideas explored along the way). Edit - having looked at the episode list for season 1, it has a rough start after the first 2 episodes (3,4,5 are bad, 6 is decent). But then really picks up big time from episode 7 on.
