    Rugby is mostly technique… knowing where and when to hit , the positioning of the head in the tackle, is key. I’ve played since I was 5 years old, only a couple of injuries, and all my fault for wrong technique.

      @Peacelily I take the point, but I disagree in part. He was able to pick up passes from his bootlaces whilst in full flow. He was able to take half a team into trying to get him down and then offload the ball to someone to cross the tryline unchecked and unmarked. He was able to sidestep like a man half his size. He didn't often demonstrate his bag of skills basically because he didn't often need them.

      Just basically lack of technique. In American, football, I think anything counts as a tackle as long as there’s is no aiming for the head. And in professional levels, I think it is legal to hit a player midair? Take my words with a grain of salt as I’ve been only playing for 1 year

    Jona Lomu an All Black (New Zealand) was 1.95 metres (6' 5") tall and weighed 125 kgs (275 lbs) he could run the 100 metres in Olympic time and a Wallaby ( Australian ) was expected to stop him. He had a kidney transplant because of nephrotic syndrome but made a limited comeback. You have to admire such a man, even though he was the opposition. He sadly died in 2015, a great loss. Jona could have played any game he wanted, including American football, and made a lot of money, but he played rugby for the love of it.

    Back then in NRL you could use just a shoulder with no arms involved. But more players suffered brain injuries
    So now you have to wrap your arms around their torso to make it a legitimate tackle.
    Also nothing above the chest otherwise its a “high tackle” and a penalty

    There is a court case currently going on in the UK involving recently retired rugby players suing their federations because they are now suffering from signs of early dementia in their 40s. While I personally think the risks must be obvious considering you have 250-pound+ guys smashing into each other for 80 mins every weekend during a full season over a 10 to 15 year career, it shows how much long-term damage the tackles you see in these videos can make. I don’t know the situation in NFL but maybe those helmets and pads are a good idea in the long-term.

    • @antoinedenis9922
      @antoinedenis9922 3 года назад +2

      well as of right now the tackle technique are way more strict because of the damage caused being in higher league or even the tiniest one i get why they are suing them but that's a risk to take also the same subject was brought up numerous time for the nfl because they tackle way less but crash litteraly into each other the pads and helmet really help in that regard because those hit are absorbed kinda like a good tackle to the gut by the shoulder that force you to the ground. both sport have the concussion issue for rugby player the tackle began to be even more strict as for nfl they are teaching proper tackle technique rather than jamming youself to the opposite player.

    • @chiara71
      @chiara71 3 года назад +2

      I agree, and on that point, in the reaction video at 03.46 we have a very clear shoulder charge, that is totally illegal and very bad form and instead they think it is a good one.
      That's the difference in tackling in American Football and rugby: in the first they crash someway into one and another and in the former they tackle properly

    • @southerlybreeze16
      @southerlybreeze16 2 года назад +1

      If you wear a helmet you will probably lead with your head in a tackle because of the protection, in rugby league you are taught to tackle correctly with your head to the side. Leading with your head to make a tackle in league and union will guarantee you come out second best with a head ache or knocked out.

      until they can come up with a way to get more padding around your actual brain, no amount of padding on the outside is gonna stop the mushy bit from sloppin around in ya brain-bucket... they only find out after you hang up your eatin' irons...
      The translation for those who don't speak Strayan...the damage is caused when the brain keeps moving, after the body has stopped, and slaps into the inside of the skull... unfortunately, at the moment, this damage can only be fully diagnosed through the autopsy process...

    • @leopardprints
      @leopardprints 2 года назад

      A helmet won't protect the brain from a 'whiplash' type injury, the brain literally is shaken and bounces forward inside the skull. Repeated hits will build up over time and cause brain injuries.

  • @tullochgorum6323
    @tullochgorum6323 2 года назад +3

    Most of these were legal, but some look like red cards and long suspensions. You have to tackle below the shoulder, wrap your arms around the ball carrier, and be careful not to lift and pile-drive them. Hitting someone in the air is a serious offence - trying to hurdle the tackler is banned as well.
    In American Football, you can tackle in the air, hurdle, tackle high, spear, hit low without wrapping and a host of stuff that would get you sent off in rugby. In every NFL game I watch there are tackles that make me cringe - much more danger of spinal injury or serious concussion in your game. If I had a kid, I wouldn't want them to play the game, to be honest. If they want to reduce neurological injury, the NFL should look at the tackle laws in rugby. It looks brutal, but in practice it's objectively safer.

    Rugby! A man’s version of American football. 😬 I’m honestly curious, how do you all play with all that unnecessary equipment on? Those helmets alone must block your peripheral vision a great deal. Even with all your “safety” equipment statistics prove the NFL still has more injuries than rugby players. Each to their own I suppose. If you want to see some real hard hitting rugby dig up some clips of Jonah Lomu playing. The man was huge and moved like a speeding freight train. He was one of the best players ever. Sadly he died very suddenly at quite a young age due to a medical condition.

    You need to watch some skilful players. Rugby is not how you make it out to be. There might be one or 2 hits a game, the majority of the time in defence you are not trying to put a hit on, you are just trying to tackle the attacker so they cannot bust the line. The attacking team will always put on some sort of set play, it's not just about running straight like see in this highlight. Also, rugby goes for 80mins continuous, it's an aerobic sport, unlike American football. Half the time in rugby you are too gassed to put on a hit.

    Thanks for the videos man. I'm from South Africa. If you want to watch an individual from my country check out "Bakkies Botha - Rugby's Biggest Thugs". Absolute monster on the field and someone not to be messed with in the slightest. He would sort you out if you touch him when you are not suppose to.

    Hey man i know us Aussies tend to give you guys some shit about our footy vs your football but respect both ways man, i feel like yours is a much more nimble game which deserves respect for your ability to change directions on a dime plus your quick thinking must be on another level.
    We do use mouth guards altho with some of the hits you see, they just come flyin out or in my case, due to the aggression and me being a front row when i was playing i used to chew thru my mouth guard every other game so i stopped wearing them.
    If you need some names man Mel Meninga, Jonah Lomu, Sam Backo, Fatty Vaughton, Andrew Ettinghousen, Gary Hancock, Alan Langer and ofc the king, Wally Lewis would all be some good blokes to look in to, kinda old school coz im an older fella but most of those guys i mentioned are either big blokes and hit hard, super fast or just really good all rounders. All the best lads hope you enjoy!

    Joe Marler - sang Adele on the Jonathan Ross Show (very funny). Know for being a bit of a loose canon, gets into quite a few fights and very funny character.
