Her Capitol albums sold millions across country and pop, and she scored other self-written classic hits like ‘Storms Never Last’ and ‘What’s Happened to Blue Eyes.’ Yet, she pulled the rug out from under her meteoric career to devote herself to something far more important than fame-her marriage to Waylon Jennings and to motherhood. Did she do wrong? No way. She turned 80 last month (May 2023), remarried after decades as a widow, looks like she’s 50, still sings amazingly, and has a new album of original country-rock songs coming out in September. Jessi played the long game, and, being the “Carly Simon of country music,” nobody does it better.

not a fan of the "new country", but this old skool ballad brings tears to my eyes......she has soul....."my eyes are not blue. but mine won't leave you".....Jessi had a very successful performing career, she was NOT merely "Mrs. Waylon Jennings"
Jessi has never been given credit or recognition for the true legendary artist she is. I don’t know how to describe it but listening to her songs much like Tammy Wynette is an experience and reaches down deep where your soul is. There should be an awards show that names simply legends of music and no not the hall of fame… I mean create Century Legends of Music as the top echelon of artists who’ve ever ever created and sang songs that will never fade away. Songs and artists who sing them like this or Etta James singing At Last. Willie Nelson singing Blue Eyes Crying or Led Zeppelin singing Stairway To Heaven and such.
Reminds me of my momma and that country bar we would go to. I’d make a killing at 7 years old running to the juke to play songs for the carnival of people who sat at a 3 sided small bar. Looking around you saw either Tammy Wynette hair or Waylon/Willie guys who were gruff. What I remember most about that place was my mom’s best friend’s who looked like Tammy Wynette and an accountant…. Shirley and Bobby. Their daughter was also a close friend… Anita. Why does the names fit a country trailer park community drinking their life away and reliving past loves and memories. I’m gonna write a country song about that tragedy of lost hope someday.
Exactly I have always said that. Once she got with Waylon it was all about him. I know that's what she chose and wanted and we love love Waylon and thank her for keeping him straight. Jessie very strong woman
Lucky you. My mom gave me her love of country music, but she never cared for waylon and never knew who jessi was. Theyre still my two favorites, though roger miller and Hank sr are pretty close calls.
I can’t listen to this without crying. For years my interpretation was that it was about a man whose love of his life left him. Then I read a comment under the album version by someone who thought it was about a widower and that gave it a whole new meaning. I guess it could be either way, but she sings “His hand lead her away” on the album and now makes me think the loss is final. Jesse’s beautiful voice really nails the sorrow in this song.
Oh... I NEVER knew.. but having just listened to Jessi in an interview talking about her religion... I believe you have it right. @@valeriepalmquist2597
It is highly unlikely that any female singer out there nowadays can sing this effortlessly. Simply amazing. The artist's of this era are in a class of their own
I think because everybody grew up around the piano or with a guitar singing. Sang in church, sang at home, sang along with the radio...everybody sang for their own entertainment..not like today, everybody glued to their own separate screen.
Corrine Baily Ray, Norah Jones, Dido, Amy Winehouse (R.I.P.), Lauren Hill come to mind. There are plenty of contemporary, talented female vocalists. This is quite nice though.
I love this song because I lost my husband in 2002-but he was a bad husband. about 5 years later I met my new partner in life-but I refuse to marry again. we are more married as single as I was with my husband. but for years in my sleep when I heard him shuffle around and thought it was my husband. no longer. he is no longer in my dreams. goodbye bad husband.
The lyrics are wonderful. The compassion of the woman for the man she loves is touching. She understands his loss and is sympathetic. Many women would be jealous but not the woman Jessi portrays. Speaks to the loving heart of Jessi.

Back in the ‘80’s, here in South Carolina, I used to sing this song on the weekends with a little country/blue grass band at a weekend roadside place with a stage. Lots of local bands gathered there to fellowship & hear country, gospel & bluegrass. I sang mostly the old songs, & those from Loretta & Dolly, but the song that was most requested was I’m not Lisa from Jessi Colter. In fact people who requested it every weekend could not remember my name, but they’d see me in town in the grocery store, or at the gas station & yell across the parking lot, “HEY! You’re not Lisa!” One day my daughter asked if I cared that none of them could remembered my name, & I told her it was an honor to be remembered at all. I can’t think of a better song to be remembered for. It will always be one of my favorites.
@@sophiathebirdy9181 i agree...country music is absolute crap nowadays...it stopped being country music in the late 80s...now it sounds like rap-which is also abominable these days as well. Imagine a bygone era where actual TALENT mattered! Today's "artists" would know talent if it bit them on the ass.
I've never known a Lisa or a Julie and this song stirs no personal memories but, something about it awakens every emotion in my body. I'm 80 years old and when I hear it I feel like a teenager again.
I unfortunately had a Lisa of 18 years that left me and divorced and this song stings like a mutha even after 2 years...however I hope to one day find a "Julie" if that is how it goes. I learned of thus sing a mere few weeks before I met her. We joked about this song being her song. Can you believe the irony?? Those jokes just aren't funny anymore!
So glad the Universe opens paths to amazing talents. Been listening to Waylon and discovered Jessi. Somehow i missed them in their rightful era but discovering the talent now.
I grew up listening to this song and a many of The Great Waylon Jennings Songs. I just turned 54 Nov 25, and I truly miss and cry when listen to the music I grew up on.
30 odd years ago I was an RN at a nursing home working the Alzheimer's wing. A man named George had "sundowner's syndrome"; he was fairly normal until evening then deteriorated rapidly. He had two fixations come bedtime: One, he'd left his truck out in the field and was worried about it; and two, he didn't know where his wife was (dead many years.) The truck wasn't a problem; someone would jingle his/her car keys and tell him he'd parked it in the garage. When it was his wife though, he'd get more and more upset (and violent) until we finally had to tell him that she was dead. That was the heart breaking part, because no matter how many times this occurred, for him it was the first time he'd heard it and his "fresh" grief would tear out your heart. If this song is really about a nurse dealing with such a patient, my heart goes out to her. If not, then it certainly does apply with those nurses who have to deal with this.
Wow, what a gut-wrenching story. Bless you for what you did for him. And thank you for sharing it. Somewhere in heaven I think he's smiling down on you now....
I had a female patient like that...I can't imagine hearing that horrible news every day. Sometimes we'd tell her husband was late and he left a message telling her to stay the night with us and she'd relax enough to sleep. She'd also worry about her kids and who'd take care of them.
Remember when this was recorded and have always liked it. About 25 years ago some new friends daughter is Lisa. Every time I see her it brings back memories of years gone by. Also made one more person a lover of this song. Lisa plays it often.
One of the best for the simplest of reasons, Jessie did not try to over sing it, she just let the song be what it is. It is easy to see what Waylon seen and heard in her. God Bless
I am now seventy eight years old, I have loved this woman and song from the first release date. For as long as I live I will keep coming back to listen again and again.
The song breaks your heart every time to listen to it she's not just singing the song she and the listener are feeling this song You Feel The Heartbreak and every word
This is what country's music is all about real meaning sung from the heart, Jessi was in a class by herself God bless her + her talent she's a angel with a golden voice ❤
I am 85 years old and I fell in love with Jessie the first time I ever heard her sing. The face and voice of an angle. Good old school music is going away as all the "good country singers " are going to be with the Lord.
I've been listening to this song since I was a little kid and now that I'm almost 40, I just realized that Lisa didn't leave with another man, she died..... And "till the sunlight shines through your face" means once he dies.
One thing I really like about her music is she puts her Heart and Feelings of such sincerity. This is another song that I cannot get enough of, and I can really relate to it as well. If I said this song does not produce tears, I would be lying... One of the best songs of all time!
First heard Jessi when she and Ronnie Millsapp opened for Wayland many years ago at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Thought what a beautiful young lady with such a haunting voice. Recently discovered her on U tube, glad I did!
One of my favorites of all time. Even though I'm a male, I sing it in the shower. "My eyes are not blue but mine ...." is the best line in the song. He just does not know that he has a special gal in his life. The haunting question for me is "Did Lisa die or was she taken by another man?" I should check to original lyrics and see if the "H" in "He" is capitalized.
No one necessarily died. Colter is acting-out a character in her gothic story-song. In this story, a woman is pleading with her man to “get over” his past girlfriend/wife and start living in the present. The former partner (“Lisa”) is long-gone-she left for whatever reason-but “Julie” is with him *now* and will love him unconditionally ‘til the day he dies. But she doesn’t want to compete with the “ghost” of a former girlfriend. Tale as old as time, really. But Colter composed a haunting, unforgettable musical reflection upon that unique situation that happens sometimes between men and women. Magic song, as Waylon rightly described it, and one of the biggest hits of the 1970s. It sold nearly 3 million copies over the years as a single alone.
Mine was Roy and he's been gone 16 years this June 23rd. I just about lost my mind and grieved til I wound up in the hospital nearly dead. It's been two years June 13th and I've made a full recovery but at times I didn't think I'd make it back

Beautiful! THIS is country NOT the crap they howl today. Geeesssseeee.. they sure could learn from the classics.
From a time when Country Music had a message and was worth listening to!!
What? You don't like "country girl shake it for me?" LOL….me neither.
@@sophiathebirdy9181 i agree...country
music is absolute crap nowadays...it stopped being country music in the late 80s...now it sounds like rap-which is also abominable these days as well. Imagine a bygone era where actual TALENT mattered! Today's "artists" would know talent if it bit them on the ass.
4 sure
The country music of my youth told a story and this song is a perfect example.
still do mate...
I'm Lisa and my sister is Julie. Lol
Mom sang this to me ALL my childhood. She is deceased now and I cry every time I hear it. I guess some people can guess my name now
I am right there with you!
So glad the Universe opens paths to amazing talents. Been listening to Waylon and discovered Jessi.
Somehow i missed them in their rightful era but discovering the talent now.
I remember being totally stunned when I first saw her sing this song some 50 yrs. ago. Stayed with me a long long time. Just beautiful!
I grew up listening to this song and a many of The Great Waylon Jennings Songs. I just turned 54 Nov 25, and I truly miss and cry when listen to the music I grew up on.
By the way I am LisaAnn
That is so sad for you and for him.
I had a female patient like that...I can't imagine hearing that horrible news every day. Sometimes we'd tell her husband was late and he left a message telling her to stay the night with us and she'd relax enough to sleep. She'd also worry about her kids and who'd take care of them.
All nurses are heroes and not appreciated enough. Your story is so true for so many nurses.
That was tough to read
Nothing like her voice love her boice
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. SHE WAS AS BEAUTIFUL AS HER SONG.
She has aged BEAUTIFULLY. LOVE JESSI. MISS WAYLON. TGF You Tube. Love the HYMNS 💞💞💞🙏🙏
Your absolutely right .
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
😥🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️😘💯
Remember when this was recorded and have always liked it.
About 25 years ago some new friends daughter is Lisa. Every time I see her it brings back memories of years gone by. Also made one more person a lover of this song. Lisa plays it often.
Hard to believe she's 80. Was married to Duane Eddy and later to Waylon Jennings, what a girl!
Still loving this song in November 2019 ❤️
Marilyn Henriksen ...you GO, gurrlll...;!
Me 2
Yup, me too. I visit this song about once a month...
loving this in December 19...
me too.
Beautiful thing about getting old is the memories of these songs take us back to when music was so great.
I love this song. A great voice. Jesse deserved more recognition for her talent and this beautiful song!
One of the best for the simplest of reasons, Jessie did not try to over sing it, she just let the song be what it is.
It is easy to see what Waylon seen and heard in her.
God Bless
How well said that is, Jerry Frederick. Thank you, I completely agree!
@@kizpawsListen to her sing a sight for sore eyes with waylon. Like this one you just can't stop playing it have a listen and keep it country
I am now seventy eight years old, I have loved this woman and song from the first release date. For as long as I live I will keep coming back to listen again and again.
Nothing like the classic country music that my daddy played and I grew up on god bless you for my childhood memories ❤❤
Such a moving song. I don't believe I breathed through the whole thing. She's beautiful and her voice is haunting.
😢😢😢😢❤
The song breaks your heart every time to listen to it she's not just singing the song she and the listener are feeling this song You Feel The Heartbreak and every word
Hey how are you doing?
One of the sweetest voices in Country Music forever.
I remember watching this performance on tv and was immediately hooked on it. Very soulful song.
Hello how are you doing…..?

I'm 34 years old and I LOVE Jessi Colter from bottom from my heart.
I'm 58 and am appreciating this good music.
A beautiful song by a beautiful woman who meant every word.
Hey how are you doing…?
@@drakehonest2 NOT falling for a creep like YOU, that's for sure!
This is what country's music is all about real meaning sung from the heart, Jessi was in a class by herself God bless her + her talent she's a angel with a golden voice ❤
Hey how are you doing today..?
Come on! There are alot more country singers that show more feeling in the songs.. open your eyes.
@@madvette74No need to be a douche twizzler about it.
I am 85 years old and I fell in love with Jessie the first time I ever heard her sing. The face and voice of an angle. Good old school music is going away as all the "good country singers " are going to be with the Lord.
Because naturally, EVERY country singer goes to heaven, right?
The word is angel NOT angle. Clearly you and I did not attend the same school.
@@ndhan72 Nothing better to do?
I've been listening to this song since I was a little kid and now that I'm almost 40, I just realized that Lisa didn't leave with another man, she died..... And "till the sunlight shines through your face" means once he dies.
@@glenntrail1811 no she hasnt oh sorry shes a trans
She is quite wonderful isn't she! I just love her singing. So much passion and feeling.
I am only 75 but I fully agree with you . This music is all we have to hang on to . God Bless
Foolish really..
WHO did you say "bless" ?
One thing I really like about her music is she puts her Heart and Feelings of such sincerity. This is another song that I cannot get enough of, and I can really relate to it as well. If I said this song does not produce tears, I would be lying... One of the best songs of all time!
A SONG THAT STILL RINGS IN THE HEART💝AND SOUL 🤗PRECIOUS 💎
Jessi Coulter, Linda Ronstadt, & Melanie Safka - three of the most beautiful women of that era, & no one has come close since.

This is so haunting and beautiful. She sings with such grace and emotion.

Simply the best
JESSI SINGING THIS SONG TEARS ME UP..IT'S BEAUTIFUL..CLASSIC TO ME
This song is so simple yet packed with SO much emotion and grief at the same time. ...so intensely moving.
Hey how are you doing…?
This song makes me feel hopeful knowing there is someone out there that'll actually care for once
tears in my eyes as I try to sing along with Jessi.
This girl is amazing. She is an angel.
This song was a monster hit from way back in 1972. One of the best songs of that year. I always loved it and still do.
1975
I was madly in love with Jessi from the first time I heard her perform this great song. I just never thought I could beat Waylon to get her.
What a beautiful woman she is and such a great voice
First heard Jessi when she and Ronnie Millsapp opened for Wayland many years ago at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Thought what a beautiful young lady with such a haunting voice. Recently discovered her on U tube, glad I did!
Just utterly hauntingly beautiful! I saw her sing this in concert!!❤
Such a Beautiful And Strong Voice! Every word , Clearly enunciated; a real Tear-jerker 🥰💯🤗
Hello how are you doing..?
This song brings back so manny memories of a better world

No one can sing I’m not Lisa except jessie and her only if you like country music that is one beautiful song thanks Jessie
Hello how are you doing today..?😮
A beautiful song, a beautiful face & voice. Lots of emotion & passion.
Hello how are you doing today…….?
I haven't heard this song in decades. This takes me back to the summer of 1975 when I was 11.
Hello Glen, OK so I looked up the lyrics and the word His is capitalized, as in His hand took her away, but it's up for debate, I hope that helps....
@@laurallewien2165 Thank you. Not 100% proof she died but to me that makes it a tad more romantic. Thank you.
Love Jessie's voice!!, beautiful songs
Miss Waylon and so does
She
God bless you and family. Luv 💖 💖 💖 💖
@@jonathankieranwriter Well thought out. Agreed!
My mother's favorite song way back in the 70s. One of my favorite songs today. Thank you Jesse for the memory
Hello friend, how are you doing today?
If you have ever lost someone you loved ,this song brings it back in tears but also precious memories.

Oh my God she's probably one of the most beautiful women I ever laid eyes on and the feeling in her voice so beautiful and I never say that
This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs, in my opinion.
When my husband was a live he listen to this beautifull song over and over every evening
So sorry for the infringe on your privacy. Beautiful song. Hello
Sorry for ur lost 😔!
what a haunting love song........ her voice is amazing. this song is like, what could or would have been!
I think anyone who has lost the love of their life can relate to this song, whether a "julie" ever came along to heal your heart or not.
Mine was Roy and he's been gone 16 years this June 23rd. I just about lost my mind and grieved til I wound up in the hospital nearly dead. It's been two years June 13th and I've made a full recovery but at times I didn't think I'd make it back
