Most people think that this lifestyle is boring as hell, but we programmers are fighting dragons in the code every single day! It's absolutely never boring! 😂

Exactly how I start the day. Paradigms such as functional programming, architecture, pen test/cyber security, design patterns, network tech, etc. And this is the best time of the day.

Thanks for the DITL. That is a good question and thought provoking topic that you brought up about senior females engineers in tech. Maybe there’s still a lot of growth that tech companies have to do in order to help/encourage and support the women in tech.

I accidentally came across this vlog, and it seems really interesting. A morning code block dedicated to learning or working on personal projects is such a great idea-I need to try it out for myself :) Keep up the great blogging!

My 2c on role models: Have role models of any gender! I have both female and male staff engineers that I look up to based on their work and communication alone :) Genetic traits are not really important to me. For example, I'm black but don't feel like I need a black role model to stay inspired.

    I loved this video!
Regarding what you mentioned about the role models, I've been working as a Data Engineer for more than 3 years, I've worked in 4 companies and the truth is that at least in my experience, many situations have arisen in the ones that don't feel good and it's very difficult for me to find a female role model to follow. I really hope this situation improves.
I loved your video and your personality, and I already subscribed to your channel, thank you very much for generating these spaces!
    Greetings from Argentina!🇦🇷😊

People who work with laptops are very "special", just squeezing your fingers in that small space is crazy while you can have a full size keyboard haha. Thanks for the video! (I work as a Sr. LD in Sweden)

I think you are correct about female role models. Most women think or they are being made to think by society that, after marriage and pregnancy, they should focus on child and home, which is a typical patriactrical thought process. I am a male, but I really think women should not sacrifice their career and I hope companies understand this sensitive thing about women, and I mean, they should make policies and environment to encourage more women to continue in software engineering.

hey Vanessa, tks for your vlog! I've been in tech for 6 years now and I never had a female senior and actually I've never worked with another female developer 😰 as far as I've been talking with some female developer friends, most want to quit because they don't have female friends at work, it's very lonely and challenging. I myself feel like that sometimes... I mean, I'm fine, but I would love to say I had long term fun co-workers relations as my female friends in marketing or something... that was not possible tho

It was soo cool when you suddenly started playing PS5.
It´s interesting thou, that if I who got a vision disability and can´t work anymore feel that I have to game every day to be creative. But I can´t play relaxing games, it has to be some part of RPG in them.
But at weekends I feel like I can play relaxing or party games.

But what you should try is to bring a friend a weekend and go to ROQ Odenplan because there is Hey STHLM. A unique Japanese arcade with a lot of games both for Girls and Gents. And there it gets easier to relax with a nice drink!!

My experience on female developers is that they are more interested in the interaction with the customers so they move on to careers focusing more towards technical project managers.

May i add something that my parents had, they had short and long term projects in life, the thinking is that having some change in life keeps the mind moving or something.
So they built 3 houses, with some help.
Having architect and builder among close relatives help ofcourse but most work was dont by my parents exept on the last one when me and my siblings was old enough to help.
Having that in life and perhaps in some way in ones job should help chasing away most of any boredom.
Also i think development/change in whatever one does matter alot to females, more so than for males but they also need the development/change.
Then we have individual differences ofcourse.
    Just my thought here :)

I worked for an American tech company as a Senior Engineer and now left - the workplace was very toxic and i would not encourage women to work in such a negative toxic work environment. More power for women to leave such a bad situatiom

Regarding the situation with very few women staying in tech, I think it's because women are less likely to stay in a place that doesn't fulfill them or exactly like they said, is not hospitable. There are so many companies that build software using very old mindsets where programmers are just seen as code monkeys, or cost centers, and so few good companies that adopt a lean mindset and gives their engineers freedom to decide for themselves and allows them to build agency in the business, build trust between teams and company leaders, etc. Sweden is probably very fortunate in this sense because of the culture there. I didn't check but I wouldn't be surprised if they have one of the largest female tech workforces in the world.

Stumbled across this video and it was interesting.
My personal conviction in judging a rolemodel doesn't account for a persons gender (or other aspects such as religious or political beliefs, sxal preferences, appearance or even education), I look to their character, ambitions and accomplishments, and decide if that person is someone I would want around me or strive to become. While I sympathize with young aspiring females who find difficulty in the 'scarcity' of female rolemodels (within these male-dominant workplaces), I do think the idea to attach or lock gender to a role model is detrimental and should be abandoned.
Besides, role models don't necessarily have to be those in your proximity. It's perfectly valid to look back in history or across the world and aspire to be as great as Margaret Hamilton or Grace Hopper, who pioneered the field and made significant contributions. Or even those not in your domain such as Bridgit Mendler or Francesca Albanese.
Also, about the instance in your company; would it not have been possible for you to be promoted to a senior position? That way you can be the rolemodel for others joining the team. Maybe it's easier to suggest something like this here in a comment rather than in a meeting at work (might come off as too opportunistic lol, "promote me to senior so I'll be female jr devs' role model =D"), but I suppose the idea is also valid, instead of looking for a role model - become/be the role model.
About the sedentery lifestyle in IT; if you have the option I recommend getting a height-adjustable desk and a walking pad. I find it to be amazing especially during the winter half of the year when the weather isn't as optimal for a run or walk like in the summer (which is what I usually do). It's very convenient and I easily hit 10k steps per day with it in the morning as I go through emails and prepare for the day.

It sounds very odd (and probably not even legal) to specifically search for a female senior engineer, pretty sure that is a clear cut case of discrimination so you probably shouldnt share that here if thay is the case 😂
I think you should improve your home setup if your working on a laptop with no mouse and keyboard and external monitor all day as a SE, that is just not good. As for the lack of sun, yeah it is one of the big minuses of living here in the north 😀 But its not that bad, in april the sun usually rises like 6 am and sets at 7:30 pm.
Very interesting to hear an americans perspective on living here, I feel we really dont have that many americans living here in Stockholm.

I think iss simple for women to just learn more and get promotion, and I think is not in women nature, so they don't feel like it is worth it. But in all it is possible, it is not about Men, it is women giving up and using more of emotions.
    All the best 💗💗💗

Not a role model problem, not an "inhospitable environment" problem, not anything. In this industry, whoever is good, climbs the ladder. You CANNOT be a good engineer that is provides good code, good system designs, and move positions up. It's not a matter of gender. Male senior engineers, and female senior engineers....how about senior engineers? Without the gender? If you are good, you are going to reach that milestone. If you don't have the same passion as others and are not trying to improve in all aspects, then you are going to leave the industry and call it an "inhospitable environment".
