I'm so glad I found this video. I've been living and working as a SWE in Stockholm since 2019 and I'm about to move back to the USA in two weeks. My salary was the same as yours and I worked near T-Centralen. Your office looks like Kista. The work culture in Stockholm is generally good but I just couldn't deal with the low pay, lack of career diversity, and the advancement bias against non-Swedes.
Yes office is Kista. :) When it comes to getting promotions it's also that at least at the company I work at, they want everyone to be around the same level and have same salary so no one pulls ahead. For example we were 5 people that started the same time and we have the exact same salary. Regarding advancement bias against non-Swedes I think there can be a little bit of it, but it can be that there some people who like to speak Swedish over English.
Hey man I am also american and have been here 13 years. I fully agree with everything you have said. I barely have motivation to work because it feels like you aren't rewarded for it. The Swedish and American culture is extremely different. I am very unhappy in Sweden, I go very much against the train of thought here. I am still here because I have a wife and son now. I have future plans of moving back to the USA with them. Not only is the pay low but if you are an American expat investments are near impossible. You more or less need to give up US citizenship or move back. Say what you will about the US but I miss all the loud, rowdy, beer drinking, pot smoking Americans. Sweden will unfortunately never feel like home.
Very true, you quickly hit the ceiling when it comes to salary and advancement in Sweden. If you ever wanna get over that 7-9k usd/month you have to become a manager with personell responsibilities. There is no other way. And if you go the manager/director path your coding will be replaced with managing people, recruitment, deadlines, expectations, team culture bla bla...
I say as a Swede that I think Swedish corporate culture is great for mediocre people and getting mediocre people to do great things together (like an ant colony). But if you are a hungry and ambitious person, most Swedish companies will feel suffocating. I would move to the US if I could but it looks like it's basically impossible.

I am an intern at a devops team at a software company right now. I really hope I land a junior role so I dont have to continue studying. The work life balance here in Sweden seems great though maybe not as flashy as the 10xers in the states.
quite surprised that you get 3200$ after taxes with 4200$ gross. I am working in Finland, make around 4350€, but only get little less than 3000€ after taxes. : ) Also the lunch is typically around 13.5€/serving, so also little bit cheaper there, which I also noticed when visiting Stockholm this summer, eating out, and services in general, are somewhat cheaper in Sweden. The work culture seems very similar, also the forest routes are very common here, even in big cities. About the salary. I think it quite normal to think in terms of needs and requirements; can I pay bills, do I get to go to summer and/or winter/off-week holidays, can I accumulate savings, can I do {insert_happy_activity}, etc. and after that the money really does not affect that much. And I can say even with this salary level there is quite enough money for monthly savings and hobbies if you don't have lavish lifestyle or too expensive house.
I think he has reduced tax because he pays rent on his apartment? And he lives in Stockholm, where the city tax is lower than most other citys. Yes, Sweden has become the cheapest country among the nordic countries because our currency lost so much valye. My daughter lives in Esbo and the rent is higher, food is more expensive, eating out more expensive than in Stockholm. + the food eating out in Sweden is much much better! Alcohol is also much cheaper in Sweden.
We have had income tax deductions since 2006, which has increased since, making the effective income tax ~23-24%, as opposed to the up-front income tax of ~30%. The tax system has become more fair to workers in the past 20 years.
I’m not sure if the salaries are comparable. In Sweden the employer pay 31,42% payroll tax before your reported salary. Which you then pay income tax on. Regarding lunch, we have a lower VAT on food and drinks which might explain the difference?

Used to work as a sysdeveloper for a warehouse system which supported socket api for Movex/M3. Working with one of Microsofts ERPs today.
Any insight in job demand and pay for the different software roles you mentioned? Particularly regarding frontend vs backend. I find frontend more interesting and rewarding but I hear it is harder to get a job and pays less. Am currently doing a master in software design and dont know which route to pick, leaning towards frontend. Great video by the way! I like the relaxed style of video and the life you are leading!

Right now its more difficult to get a job for example in stockholm when I started back in 2020 there were 2500 job openings on Linkedin, now there is less then 500 so less jobs for sure. But I do believe if you have done side projects and can write and understand code well, got good social skills and can speak the native language its still quite easy.
that's a lot of meeting my boy 3 hours meetings, 1 hour lunch break takes about an hour to get in to the work mode so you really get to write meaningful code about 2-3 hours if you're not late, in a rush and get distracted.

$4200 isn't even that much after 3.5 years. Sweden has laughable wages for people with higher education. There should be an incentive to pursue higher education. It is ridiculous to go to school and take csn and make as much money as someone driving a forklift over night. Can't wait to get through school and get the hell out of Sweden and back to the USA.

Right now as Im writing this comment it's definitely more difficult to find a job compared to when I was looking 4 years ago. Back then I remember there were 4500 developer jobs in Stockholm. Now there is around 700. As for suggestion on how to find a job I would say learn how to solve tech interview questions, I used a website called code wars. Then also do some side projects so you can stand out from other job applicants. A lot of people don't have any side projects. As for education getting a relevant 3 year degree is enough. I got a 5 year with masters but most of my collegues got a 3 year in IT or system developer.

I earn about $4000 before tax, close to 5 years experience, thought my job is in a town much smaller than Stockholm. Seems like we got the same work tasks and responsibilities. I got to ask, how many hours do you spend at work? I spend about 30 minutes to an hour at lunch, time not considered as a part of the 8 hours workday. I would love to be able to get some gym time in there, but that would make me have to spend closer to 10 hours at work (which is not uncommon at all). You seem to have it all figured out landing a terrific job at a terrific company.
I spend around 8h in total at the office. No one really keeps track of time but I try not to be the first to leave the office. I feel like once the first person on the team leaves then it's ok to leave also. But I would say lunch and gym is included since it's quite common for me to come up with solutions during time. We have also had lectures saying that we sometimes think better when moving and are not in front of the desk so I think my manager supports going to the gym.
So, as a Swede Im getting annoyed my many of the comments. Stockholm is very expensive, and its impossible to pay rent unless you live with others or have bought your apparment. Food is just as expensive as new York. And yes, tuition isnt free but payed with taxes. In the us, you dont pay 32% tax on your pension neither if you earn 1.200 dollar a month. Here you do. Youre welcome. And I have to say it looks very idyllic to live country side, but in the winter…the darkness eat you alive.
Whats stops me from biking is that the days becomes too short in Sweden (start of November) and then of course snow and ice. I would say this year I have biked every day between Mars - September

Yes I got an degree studied IT and then got a masters in software engineering. As for projects I just looked up a lot of tutorials online on youtube like creating a youtube website clone / facebook website clone and more or less copied and then added some more features to those websites. Then I also solved a lot of programming interview questions, I used a website called Code wars, and then had a link to my Code wars profile to show the code I have written. As for learning how to code I used Udemy and took some courses in Python and Javascript. I was not able to learn coding from School. Hope it goes well for you :)
For sure it will. The seniors who has worked here for 25+ years do the same work as I do. Each task is different but It's the some work flow every time. But I think the more experience you get the more freedom you can demand, since your slaary doesn't change that much at all. For example Im going to work from China again next month.

Seems much more chill than my day as a software engineer in the US, but WOW. $4,000 a month. I know its not all about the money, but wow... I think most software engineers in the US would decline a job if they offered DOUBLE that.
Yes salaries here are not comparable to the US, like the seniors who has worked 25+ years maybe make 8k USD before taxes. Living in Sweden is probably also a lot cheaper. I save around 1k USD every month.
Would that be 8000 before tax? And all includes? I also have 3 yoe as a swe in europe and make about 4500 euro before tax. But that does not include pension, transport, bonus, holiday allowance etc. In total i make 75k euro a year. 82k dollar. Working 9 days every 2 weeks plus 6 weeks paid time off.
@@NiklasHe 8k here is a good starting salary, what you would get for your first job after college, and taxes here are lower too. but of course on the flip side, you have to pay for health care, you have to save more for retirement, etc. I make about 12k, and save about 5k a month, but I save a lot more than most people I feel like.

The way I learned to code and really understood it was to solve tech programing interview questions, I used a website called codewars but there are others for example leetcode. I started with easy problems and then worked my way up. But for me I had to start writing code and thinking about code and not just watch tutorials.

4200 is what a cleaning lady, server or retail cashier makes here in Switzerland. Software Engineers make at least 8k. Most above 10k. Heck even I earn around 8k with a regular office job.
Yeah, cost of living is a lot cheaper in Sweden though. This is just numbers from the top result on Google: "Cost of Living in Switzerland is 83.0% higher than in Sweden (without rent) Cost of Living Including Rent in Switzerland is 95.0% higher than in Sweden Rent Prices in Switzerland are 137.1% higher than in Sweden Restaurant Prices in Switzerland are 76.6% higher than in Sweden Groceries Prices in Switzerland are 85.4% higher than in Sweden Local Purchasing Power in Switzerland is 21.1% higher than in Sweden" So your local purchasing power is only 21.1% higher than here despite earning a lot more. Sweden is a fairly low income country with very even salaries across all fields if you take our standard of living into account. We don't really have the extreme lows or the extreme highs that you can see in other countries.
4200 is what a (low) manager level employee earns in Italy, so what? If you don’t take into account the cost of living, healthcare and other benefits, monthly pay is just a number…

Some companies prefer people who can speak Swedish but it defenietly isn't a must. English is enough to get a job since anyone can speak English here, especially in the tech industry. There are a lot of Indians and Chinese in the company I work. I found my job through Linkedin.

4200$ after working for nearly 4 years, that seems extremely low? In Denmark you would easily get a position for 5700$ if not slightly more. Do sweden not value their developers?
If you want to compare with danish salary, multiply the swedish by 30%, in this case 5460. Why? Because the social-security stuff is withdrawn before you see them in Sweden but not in Denmark. Then remember than taxes are higher in Denmark as well.
I think 4.2k is fine really. But the company I work at (Infor) definitely pays below average. Out of all the people I graduated with I have the lowest salary. Most of my friends make 4.5 - 5k. But I will try to push a little bit during the next salary talk :)
@@frstchan The average tax in Denmark is lower / near the same as Sweden. Only if you pay the highest tax (which few does), then yeah its high. People who say the taxes in Denmark are high either doesnt understand the tax range, or they assume the person is making 12k+ a month. I dont care what you say, 4200$ is undervalued for a developer, even in Sweden. (well apparently not) And you most certainly dont have to add 30% when comparing the salaries between the two countries, thats bogus. Some grocery categories does seem to be cheaper in Sweden, but rent and general maintenance costs are around the same between the two countries, unless you again specifically use CPH your basis (which again, people like to base their meassurements around the most expensive city to make it look worse than it is)

@@MrBa143 In Sweden, the pre-tax salary you will se will have all the pension/healthcare/etc cost withdrawn before you see it, and THEN income taxes are drawn from it. In Denmark, the pension/healthcare/etc is INCLUDED in the pre-tax salary you will see and THEN income taxes are drawn from it. This means, in Sweden, when you see a salary of say 4000, it already had these things withdrawn. And that is roughly speaking 30% of the salary. So you have to add this number to the salary to compare to other countries.
learn 🙃 My gf was dropped from university (has 2 unfinished universities, I tried just 1 and also didn't finish it) and after that she started coding. She was total beginner when it comes to coding. HTML > CSS > JS > ReactJs. She was depressed because she felt like failure. She also procrastinated coding. But after not even a year learning (on and off), she landed a job and is very happy. Don't give up. You got this 😉
I am a structural engineer in Denmark. Your salary sounds low! I have two years experience and have 6000 before taxes. And software engineers should get more than structural.

Yeah went to university for 5 years (Masters) although many of my colleges only went for 3 years (Bachelor). My entrance salary was 3200USD before taxes and 2400USD after.

My daughter lives in Esbo and the rent is higher, food is more expensive, eating out more expensive than in Stockholm. + the food eating out in Sweden is much much better!

We have had income tax deductions since 2006, which has increased since, making the effective income tax ~23-24%, as opposed to the up-front income tax of ~30%. The tax system has become more fair to workers in the past 20 years.
I’m not sure if the salaries are comparable. In Sweden the employer pay 31,42% payroll tax before your reported salary. Which you then pay income tax on.
Regarding lunch, we have a lower VAT on food and drinks which might explain the difference?

Used to work as a sysdeveloper for a warehouse system which supported socket api for Movex/M3. Working with one of Microsofts ERPs today.

I find frontend more interesting and rewarding but I hear it is harder to get a job and pays less. Juniors are struggling a bit right now but a couple of years ago the market was wide open. It will swing back.
Right now its more difficult to get a job for example in stockholm when I started back in 2020 there were 2500 job openings on Linkedin, now there is less then 500 so less jobs for sure. But I do believe if you have done side projects and can write and understand code well, got good social skills and can speak the native language its still quite easy.
that's a lot of meeting my boy 3 hours meetings, 1 hour lunch break takes about an hour to get in to the work mode so you really get to write meaningful code about 2-3 hours if you're not late, in a rush and get distracted.

$4200 isn't even that much after 3.5 years. Sweden has laughable wages for people with higher education. There should be an incentive to pursue higher education. It is ridiculous to go to school and take csn and make as much money as someone driving a forklift over night. Can't wait to get through school and get the hell out of Sweden and back to the USA.

Right now as Im writing this comment it's definitely more difficult to find a job compared to when I was looking 4 years ago. Back then I remember there were 4500 developer jobs in Stockholm. Now there is around 700.
As for suggestion on how to find a job I would say learn how to solve tech interview questions, I used a website called code wars. Then also do some side projects so you can stand out from other job applicants. A lot of people don't have any side projects.
As for education getting a relevant 3 year degree is enough. I got a 5 year with masters but most of my collegues got a 3 year in IT or system developer.

I earn about $4000 before tax, close to 5 years experience, thought my job is in a town much smaller than Stockholm. Seems like we got the same work tasks and responsibilities. I got to ask, how many hours do you spend at work? I spend about 30 minutes to an hour at lunch, time not considered as a part of the 8 hours workday. I would love to be able to get some gym time in there, but that would make me have to spend closer to 10 hours at work (which is not uncommon at all). You seem to have it all figured out landing a terrific job at a terrific company.
I spend around 8h in total at the office. No one really keeps track of time but I try not to be the first to leave the office. I feel like once the first person on the team leaves then it's ok to leave also.
But I would say lunch and gym is included since it's quite common for me to come up with solutions during time. We have also had lectures saying that we sometimes think better when moving and are not in front of the desk so I think my manager supports going to the gym.

Stockholm is very expensive, and its impossible to pay rent unless you live with others or have bought your apparment.
Food is just as expensive as new York.
And yes, tuition isnt free but payed with taxes.
In the us, you dont pay 32% tax on your pension neither if you earn 1.200 dollar a month.

Yes I got an degree studied IT and then got a masters in software engineering. As for projects I just looked up a lot of tutorials online on youtube like creating a youtube website clone / facebook website clone and more or less copied and then added some more features to those websites.
Then I also solved a lot of programming interview questions, I used a website called Code wars, and then had a link to my Code wars profile to show the code I have written.
As for learning how to code I used Udemy and took some courses in Python and Javascript. I was not able to learn coding from School.

For sure it will. The seniors who has worked here for 25+ years do the same work as I do. Each task is different but It's the some work flow every time.
But I think the more experience you get the more freedom you can demand, since your slaary doesn't change that much at all. For example Im going to work from China again next month.

Seems much more chill than my day as a software engineer in the US, but WOW. $4,000 a month. I know its not all about the money, but wow... I think most software engineers in the US would decline a job if they offered DOUBLE that.
Yes salaries here are not comparable to the US, like the seniors who has worked 25+ years maybe make 8k USD before taxes. Living in Sweden is probably also a lot cheaper. I save around 1k USD every month.
Would that be 8000 before tax? And all includes? I also have 3 yoe as a swe in europe and make about 4500 euro before tax. But that does not include pension, transport, bonus, holiday allowance etc. In total i make 75k euro a year. 82k dollar.
Working 9 days every 2 weeks plus 6 weeks paid time off.
@@NiklasHe 8k here is a good starting salary, what you would get for your first job after college, and taxes here are lower too. but of course on the flip side, you have to pay for health care, you have to save more for retirement, etc. I make about 12k, and save about 5k a month, but I save a lot more than most people I feel like.

The way I learned to code and really understood it was to solve tech programing interview questions, I used a website called codewars but there are others for example leetcode. I started with easy problems and then worked my way up. But for me I had to start writing code and thinking about code and not just watch tutorials.

Friday during the summer break (July - August), I picked a day where there were gonna be less people just to make it easier for myself to record and not having to explain to a lot of people.
4200 is what a cleaning lady, server or retail cashier makes here in Switzerland. Software Engineers make at least 8k. Most above 10k. Heck even I earn around 8k with a regular office job.
Yeah, cost of living is a lot cheaper in Sweden though. This is just numbers from the top result on Google:

So your local purchasing power is only 21.1% higher than here despite earning a lot more. Sweden is a fairly low income country with very even salaries across all fields if you take our standard of living into account. We don't really have the extreme lows or the extreme highs that you can see in other countries.
4200 is what a (low) manager level employee earns in Italy, so what? If you don’t take into account the cost of living, healthcare and other benefits, monthly pay is just a number…
Different countries, I think its still pretty good compared to most other countries so not complaining at all. :)

Some companies prefer people who can speak Swedish but it defenietly isn't a must. English is enough to get a job since anyone can speak English here, especially in the tech industry. There are a lot of Indians and Chinese in the company I work. I found my job through Linkedin.

4200$ after working for nearly 4 years, that seems extremely low? In Denmark you would easily get a position for 5700$ if not slightly more. Do sweden not value their developers?
If you want to compare with danish salary, multiply the swedish by 30%, in this case 5460. Why? Because the social-security stuff is withdrawn before you see them in Sweden but not in Denmark. Then remember than taxes are higher in Denmark as well.
I think 4.2k is fine really. But the company I work at (Infor) definitely pays below average. Out of all the people I graduated with I have the lowest salary. Most of my friends make 4.5 - 5k. But I will try to push a little bit during the next salary talk :)
@@frstchan The average tax in Denmark is lower / near the same as Sweden. Only if you pay the highest tax (which few does), then yeah its high. People who say the taxes in Denmark are high either doesnt understand the tax range, or they assume the person is making 12k+ a month.
I dont care what you say, 4200$ is undervalued for a developer, even in Sweden. (well apparently not) And you most certainly dont have to add 30% when comparing the salaries between the two countries, thats bogus.
Some grocery categories does seem to be cheaper in Sweden, but rent and general maintenance costs are around the same between the two countries, unless you again specifically use CPH your basis (which again, people like to base their meassurements around the most expensive city to make it look worse than it is)

@@MrBa143 In Sweden, the pre-tax salary you will se will have all the pension/healthcare/etc cost withdrawn before you see it, and THEN income taxes are drawn from it.
In Denmark, the pension/healthcare/etc is INCLUDED in the pre-tax salary you will see and THEN income taxes are drawn from it.
This means, in Sweden, when you see a salary of say 4000, it already had these things withdrawn. And that is roughly speaking 30% of the salary. So you have to add this number to the salary to compare to other countries.

learn 🙃 My gf was dropped from university (has 2 unfinished universities, I tried just 1 and also didn't finish it) and after that she started coding.
She was total beginner when it comes to coding. HTML > CSS > JS > ReactJs.
She was depressed because she felt like failure. She also procrastinated coding. But after not even a year learning (on and off), she landed a job and is very happy.

I am a structural engineer in Denmark. Your salary sounds low! I have two years experience and have 6000 before taxes. And software engineers should get more than structural.

Yeah went to university for 5 years (Masters) although many of my colleges only went for 3 years (Bachelor). My entrance salary was 3200USD before taxes and 2400USD after.
