How to stop breastfeeding without pain

  • The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding from birth till a baby is 6 months old, then complementary feeding together with continued breastfeeding until the child is 2 years old. Sometimes, you may need to wean your child earlier than this because of separation from your baby, a new baby or pressures of work.
    To stop breastfeeding without pain, you need to do it gradually over weeks. This gives time to your body to adjust by producing less breastmilk, and then with time, you produce very little and you can stop breastfeeding without pain.
    On the other hand, if you go cold turkey, you will have pain. You can manage the pain with over the counter pain medications like paracetamol, and by expressing a little milk to relieve the pain and throwing away the expressed breastmilk. Also wear well-fitted brassieres. If your breasts get engorged and infected (mastitis), you need to go to hospital.
    You may feel sad or afraid that you will lose the closeness you had with your baby when you stop breastfeeding. What you can do is to spend more time playing, reading to your child or doing other fun things.
    Remember to make complementary feeds nutritious.

    Thanks for sharing but I’m going through so much pain 😭😭😭😭😭. I had to travel without my son and it’s just 2days and I’m loosing it!!! The pain is soooo much!!! Even after taking pain relief. The experience is making me feel sick and feverish 🥵. Just 2days of not being with my son who will be 2years in a month time. Women are underrated!!!!!!

      So sorry. Express a little so you feel comfortable. You can put a cold compress on it to help with the pain after expressing. But if you feel feverish, you need to see a doctor

    I stopped my breastfeeding now baby is 1.9 years . Taken cabergoline tablet for 2 days . Now 9 days over but still having milk clot in one place in my breast . If I am giving hot compression it is going again it is coming mam When it will go ? Is it normal ? Please guide me mam 🙏

    • @Babychildandco
      @Babychildandco  6 месяцев назад

      Cabergoline is not recommended for stopping breastfeeding. What you can do now, going forward, is to express a little, just rough to relieve 'the clot', and throw away whenever you feel pain. But if you are not in pain, I suggest you don't do anything. The breastmilk should stop if everything is fine.

      So sorry, dear mummy. I understand you are concerned about engorged and painful breasts because your baby took a nursing break/ strike. We have 2 videos that address these. See if they are helpful.
