- I filmed Yorkshire Royal in the Ringing Chamber and outside, but I don't know what was rung on the back 8 when in the Belfry. All I know is the tenor ringer can't have rung the bell much before! lol
Yorkshire Royal is a lovely method, but I am yet to learn it! It's my next challenge after Cambridge Royal, which (if I can remember it) is dead easy.
Chesterfield bells are great if they are struck well. Some of them are very odd-struck, especially the 9th.
Chesterfield church is famous for it's Crooked Spire. There are many stories about how it came to be crooked, my favourite is that it saw a virgin getting married there and it was so surprised it turned round to have a look! The more scientific story is that wet wood was used in it's construction, and the wood then dried and warped, creating the famous spire. This seems to be the correct theory, as there are three sets of wood in the spire: the original set, and then a second set put in in the early 16th Century, and a final set put in in the late 16th Century. The spire is so full of wood that if stood inside you cannot see more than a few metres up.
Also, never stand at the base of the spire with it tilting over you and look up. You feel as if you are falling off the tower! It is very strange.
Chesterfield College are keeping an eye on the spire (see the bit in the video) and keep the church updated as to it movement of it: it doesn't stand still!

What a fantastic ring of 10. So musical.
@irkibby Its where the weight of the lead spire tiles twisted the wooden structure. THe spire was actually built straight in medieval times!!!
Was here the other day; hung around for the whole afternoon (nothing to do in CHesterfield on a Sunday!!) but they still werent ringing for evensong :(
Glorious noise though, and some good spire footage. WHat were they like to ring?
THe back 8 sound GLORIOUS!!!
Love the story as to how the crookedness came to be :)
SOunds like GRANDSIRE rung on the back 8, though i COULD be wrong - we are only human after all :)
BTW, Yorkshire ROyal is EASIER than Cambridge - it helps that you NEVER dodge with your before-and-after bells in the middle :)
wow, they sound great and the spire looks very crooked! :]
Chesterfield lad here I want this as my ringtone.
Oh yes, and one expert even blamed BELL-RINGING for the Crooked Spire!!
“expert”
Have you met my friend Andy Thackeray heis on the treble with head band on
My home town. I miss hearing the bells.
They were rung for new years and I believe they are looking for new recruits
AllonsyRapunzel Yes they are, and my parents were two of the people ringing in the new year on Chesterfield's bells too
Yes they are me and my friend try to attend as much as possible.
@@8spliced 10 bells cast by mears and stainbank tenor 25-1-5cwts and a scantus bell by whitechapel
heavy crooked spire
it is grandsire. there was a bob at the start.
A crooked spire is FAR easier to deal with than a crooked rector, in my experience! But thatnks, absolutely fascinating video.
Another story is that the devil came to Chesterfield but the locals chased him up the spire and it twisted while he clung to it!
The spire is just... what the hell?!
Another fantastic Whitechapel job - 1947
A truly amazing ring...very tight

@simonbellringer
Oh yes, I know that, but even with a rational explanation, one looks at it and thinks "wtf?"
I have been up the tower twice here on ringing outings and it's a real mess of woodwork
