Thanks!! You saved me a ton of hassle. I spent 20 mins looking at the damn filter wondering how the hell to get to it. I never would’ve thought to remove the grill and pop the headlight out. Thumbs up!!
Best and easiest way to change the oil filter on my 08 Jeep Liberty Sport. The dealership didn’t even know how to get to the filter. After watching this video, got it done quickly. My filter was loose as well, now it’s on a lot better. Great video my man!
Your instructions were perfect - taking out grill and light was simple. Access to filter was easier - i was able to unscrew filter by hand (but it was not loose). Thanks for taking the time to share this....
Thanks for that great video. I have a 2009 Jeep Liberty and it was impossible to get the filter off. After watching your video it took me 10 minutes to get it apart but it was well worth the extra work. Thanks again
Thank you!!!! Little more work but much easier. Just inherited my 08 Liberty and didn't have a clue where that filter was. My grill wasn't as easy to get off, but it finally did.
Thanks Brother saved me alot of time and patients figuring this out. Deff the best way to do it. Why they design these vehicles where its so hard to do reg. Maintenance
Thank you for this video! I can't tell you how much it helped me. I changed my oil yesterday and will continue to do it myself thanks to your information from this video.
Glad I found this video. My only suggestion would be to put a few layers of tape on the top of the bumper, I scratched mine up trying to get the grill out!!! At least now the oil filter is tight and not gonna leak!!
We have a Liberty Limited and this is how I change the oil filter now because my arm will not fit when trying from underneath the car either. I realized how easy the grill and headlights come off when I replaced the radiator and clutch fan...piece of cake.
Tried for over two hours. Took out the top screws on the fluid reservoirs. Then removed the air filter box to get at one screw right side. Then took out the battery but could not get the last screw out. Then went back under and removed the oil filter drip shield only to find out even when unbolted you have to lift out the motor to take it out. I am beginning to wonder if anyone has ever changed my filter. If I could have met the designer of this Nitro yesterday I would have taken him out to the wood shed for a chat. I gave up. It's gonna take a small armed pro. And I will gladly pay to watch.
@@harveyroad6 I don't have small, skinny, or exceptionally long arms, but I can get my filter from underneath, reaching up, without removing anything else. I can even get a filter wrench up there to loosen it. It sucks, but it can be done.
Thank you thank you thank you so much my man.. as a 2012 Dodge nitro owner it was very similar. But only 4 plastic push pins and about 6 metal screws.. both lights had to come out with grill. I'm a gym junkie so my arms are quite big but still managed to get my arm in there.
First, sorry for the hijack here. I've been able to get to my filter by reaching up underneath. Unfortunately, though, I'm adding a front hitch soon, so this access will probably be blocked by the hitch. In preparation for that, I went under and removed the oil drip tough. As someone below wrote, getting the two bolts off is pretty easy, but trying to get the three pronged trough out is pretty much impossible. After trying for almost an hour, and even removing my oil filter, I realised that it wasn't coming out. But then simply getting a hack saw blade and slowly cutting off the smaller driver's side prong off made it so I could slip the trough off easily. It's plastic, so it's not really that tough to cut it off, just takes determination. I don't know if having the oil filter removed is necessary, but if you try the method above, and still can't get it out, try taking the filter off. And once that trough is gone, you can just barely fit the filter up through everything and into place. I don't know how much more messy it's going to be the next time I change the oil, but at least I know it's accessible now.
My arms are small enough I can get in there to change it. Every time I get it done professionally I have to reach in and tighten it myself when I get home. They always leave it loose.
I have a 2009 Liberty -Rocky Mountain-, and found i can access the filter simply, by taking the battery and battery assembly out , ( pull out battery, then unclip the fuse box, and remove battery assembly /5 bolts - then gives you easy access, reach down and pull the filter out ! hope this helps ;)
Ive had a liberty for a few monts now and its amazing the shit i have to go through to do simple stuff. Had a small leak and traced it back to the filter. Removed easily from the top. Saw no issues with the filter replaced it AND only snugged tight. Leak came back in about a month. Decided to replace the filter and NOW cant get the filter to spin off. This jeep is really pissing me off. This isnt the only stupid thing just the latest..
I found that by removing the header tank above the rad (5 screws) and swinging it clockwise to rest on top of the block and removing the fan shroud (2 screws and a connector) gives full access to the filter, drive belt, AC , water pump and altenator. Saves a lot of scuffed knucles and grease smeared forearms. Just another poor design choice from Chrysler.
Ellie, it's an oil filter wrench. Also known as a filter cap wrench or filter socket. I was using it with a 3/8 flex head ratchet. I'm not a big fan of the flex head ratchets because they're great at busting knuckles :-(
thank you thank you for this video. I'm going to start changing my own oil. I just realized that the garage was NOT replacing the filter, when i went for oil change. it seems it's so difficult, they were skipping that part. then again thanks to jeep/chrysler stupid engineers to design an engine where you have to pull most of the car apart just to aceess the oil filter. (#jeep)(@jeep)
Hey man thanks for making the liberty videos, there are hardly any out there! Also did your fenders and bumpers come stock or did you get them after market?
Thank you Hilltown! I will give this method a try, absolutely could not believe this models oil filter change required extra just to access! What size wrench are you using there?
I was using a Vector filter wrench (size unknown) with a Tekton 3/8” swivel head ratchet. I’m not a big fan of the swivel heads because they’re tough to put any force into without them kicking out and smashing your knuckles (lol). Good luck!
Hilltown It worked! Easy-peasy getting access this way. We own an '08 Liberty 3.7L and only hang up was two tabs on front grill that connect to headlights. Thanks again for video man, really did help!
@@kaiboshdakaizer I to own a "08. The one time in my life I wished I had long "skinny" arms and fingers. My Fred Flinstone arms/hands make changing the "08s filter a true challenge. Thanks Hilltown, u rock!
Yep! Someone at Chrysler should have lost their job over this one. But any mechanic worth their weight in salt should have no problems. I changed mine from the ground under facing backward with my left arm going up by the radiator drain spigot and shroud using a band wrench. Have done my share of wrenching, logging, farming - including hand milking, and now a junkyard dog, so my forearms are not small. Sure you get some scrapes and bruises but isn't that our world without rounded edges!
That sounds ridiculous. Automotive engineers surely aren't thinking of anyone after it's designed, built and finally sold to unsuspecting consumers. expecting to be able to change an oil filter with out special instructions.
After watching this video, it really isn't' that much work to remove the grill and the head light. 8 stoppers and 2 rubber screws. then 3 on the head light. takes less time than spending a 1/2 hour just looking at the filter wondering how to get to it.
It not that hard. I do not no how to make videos but with the right tool that filter will come off and go on. mine has 200,000 miles and I change it every 5000 miles since new.
It would appear that the automotive engineers were warming their heads to 99.6F.
13 years and 136k miles later I finally have an easier way to change the oil on my now beater. Thank you! Wish I would have seen this year's ago!
This man just saved us an engine with the hint about the filter loosening. Hero!

Thank you very much for the video. It really helped me. Now I can take the dealer on .
Good deal brother!
Thanks for the video I had the same problem having to bring it back to the dealer to have them tighten the filter again. Thanks again!
I figured there had to be somebody else in my shoes. Thanks for watching pal.
Thanks for the video.

I almost wish I still had the Jeep to try this method. Almost.
I love that Jeep and thanks for the tip!!
thank you its the same with the 2012 Jeep liberty Sport Model
You need to run a credit card on the lower corner of the headlights to release the bottom tab of the grill to get it to release.

Sounds like my experience. Mine was halfway reliable, but I had all these nuisance issues that drove me nuts. Good luck.
This was great. Thanks. Idk if Imma try it lol but still good
Thanks John.
I have a 2012 Jeep KK Liberty Jet and have the same issues. Unless you have a hoist and slim arms, the headlight removal isthe only way to go.
GretschenMunch Bummer! If i still had the Jeep, i was planning to purchase a filter relocation kit to rectify the problem.
they're tough to change the oil filters, I AGREE.
Thank you! I have a 2011 Dodge Nitro i am going to try this maybe it's the same process ,good thing this time i am replacing headlights .

I like that idea, and your last sentence is spot on.
My 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport has the exact same issue - stupid design. The relocation kits seem to have quality issues.

I don't know how I missed your comment, but I just stumbled upon it today :-) The Jeep was stock...that scheme comes with the Renegade package.
Just did this - its quick and easy - YAYx1000
Does your oil change work on a 2009 Jeep Liberty limited? My grill doesn't look like your renegade. I love your video great way to do it
Dom Pug Don’t quote me, but I think it works on 2008 and up Liberty Renegades. Thanks Dom!
Can we just use a small filter?
Not sure that would help much. At least for me, it was more of a reach issue.
I’m so glad I don’t have that skid plate. On mine But even with out that skid plate it’s hard to get up in there
Thank you!!! Been doing my own oil changes all my life...I'm in my 50's, this is the
dumbest design I've ever seen!
You and me both!
There is an adapter you can buy that relocates the filter to a less stupid location
