it's ironic. and i love the sound of the sax too, i switched to clarinet from flute, it seems much easier., the other day it was very nice in Ohio on Wednesday evening, and i went outside to practice, later one of the teens was dropped off and their dad thought i was playing the sax., i dont know if thats a compliment.. maybe it is ?
Ms Doreen I never knew a clarinet could sound like that until the first time I ran across you playing, (House of the rising sun) on Royal street in 2017, the beautiful sound coming from your clarinet picked me up out of my shoes. Thank you Ms doreen I respect you greatly🙏🏾

I grew up in Lafayette and that tone was frowned upon by my HS music teacher. Thankfully I had many cousins in the New Orleans bands and they made sure I was good. Thanks for teaching the style.
I was in many different school bands, all the way from Germany to Canada to multiple US states, nowhere ever even mentioned a clarinet could sound like this let alone teach how to achieve it. Idk how Lafayette is now, but when I graduated we were extremely hardcore straight to point no waisting time, play it as it's meant to be played. Which was very interesting to me that Louisiana of all places I felt the least freeing my music and the most "judged" in a bad way while playing

I'm a hobbyist. My cousin is a music student and he taught me flutter tonguing (spanish R), to practice tonguing as well as learning the pressure required for the reed to make a rich tone.

I used to know how to growl, and completely forgot, and this retaught me. Now I just need to find a time and place to play.

Ms. Ketchens, Sista Gurl... i'm so glad i found you.. YOU is THE Bomb. Truly. You get my flowers while you're still here. True story: a couple of months ago, after i had bought a cheap flute and was looking for lesson info on RUclips.. you came up on the sidebar (playing "House of the Rising Sun") and when i heard that "Growl.." and how you do the damn thang... i was like "Dat's dat Sh!t, right there".. you brought me to a Louis Armstrong Satchmo place.. i clicked off RUclips, and Googled you, to do more and more research on this Doreen Queen. After that i knew flute wasn't my cup of tea.. I never dug blowing into the hole and holding the instrument off to the side, i just wasn't ready to go far with that. So i moved on, and got into those mini-saxes with a Reed (oh no, a Reed), the first of 2 i have, is made of Bamboo. i had my initial nightmares.. getting my embouchure right.. Then went on a vacation, to ... The Philippines.. & just happened to be in a music store one day.. and saw a Clarinet sitting there.. it was "Calling" me.. so i bought it... and it's been love at first sight.. Again, at first the reed playing was a struggle. & in my search for the right Reed, i found a store in Manila (Musicgear Manila), and the good people in there have everything Clarinet that you could ask for. I got the reeds and mouthpiece that made a ton of difference for me. & the Ligature: BG Duo is my soulmate. Plus they told me about a guy who gives lessons.. & dig this (blessing from above, when you know God has stepped in the room) that guy LIVES IN THE SAME BUILDING i was staying at.. after just 2 lessons, my embouchure/reed issue was past history.. But, i feel like you and your whole bag of Doreen Ketchens wonderfulness.. planted this seed.. & i must say, you are inspirational. God bless you. Omfg I have been playing with the growl and I didn't even know it I do that when I practice scales I do it all the time im good at something I didn't even know I was doing
I had to leave Lake Charles due to the hurricane 🌀 and I moved to New Orleans, then Ida came. But music like yours keeps me going and brings back hope for my hometowns in rough times.
Hey Doreen...Your Magnificence...I have no problem doing the "rrrrrr" until I put the clarinet in my mouth. Can't make it happen with single lip, only quickly switching to double, which is impractical. Any ideas? I'll save your answer for the lesson. I'll be in touch.
Hello Doreen! The spanish r... do you roll it back of your tongue or the front? I'd always thought the front was fluttertongue, and have never managed to roll an r from the back. Front of the tongue rolling has given me trouble with air volume before... I should try it again. maybe with House of the Rising Sun. Third way I know about is humming a note off from what you're playing.

Hello Darlin, Here From Ohio.. watching your clarinet lessons. i had to stop taking lessons being that i had a scheduling conflict / and drs appointments, but take my lessons from a gentlemen from Tennessee he started doing zoom classes with his student's during the pandemic and it's been still going, his name is Mr. Borchers, i switched to clarinet because it's so much easier than the flute, in my opinion.,i know this video is old but curious if you'd be doing any recent lessons? for this year?... i plan to re-apply for some liberal arts universities in Ohio, for their music programs , i also play Irish Tin Whistle or anything with holes? i guess. any who. i stumbled upon your channel, i hope it's ok. i'm still a beginner but i am the type that can pick up my instrument and play a song. i n ever learned, i love the house of rising sun.. can you do a tutorial on that song Ms. Doreen?

Hi! What vowel are you thinking to get your throat together to growl on altissimo notes? That’s where I’m losing it and it just can’t figure out how to structure my airstream/throat/back of tongue for this. Ee hasn’t been helping.

I growl on my Clarinet by letting a little sloppy air out on the right side of my reed. I learned how to do it on the Saxophone first...
