Summer float fishing on the River Wey 🎣

- Join me as I rise at the crack of dawn on a sublime June morning and head for the River Wey in Surrey. There are mixed emotions as it was supposed to be the start of two mates' mini fishing festival, but despite my old pal's absence I'm surrounded by nature's summer splendour and enjoy bites galore - a solo angling adventure that sees me catch plenty of fish and recall some happy memories.
I fish feeder and a straight peacock waggler, really spraying in the casters and hemp, while coaxing the fish into a feeding frenzy and catching roach, dace, perch, chublets and even a bleak! As always, please sit back, relax and enjoy...

Lovely video again John, you really manage to capture the tranquility and peacefulness of fishing and are very natural in front of the camera. it feels as though I am there with you.
That’s always lovely to hear 💙🙏🎣 I once saw a comment under a well known RUclipsrr’s latest release, that essentially said they loved those professional level films because the rest of RUclips was now awash with vids of ‘random people’s days out fishing.’ It had me thinking, as that’s essentially what many of my vids amount to, but I try to bring plenty of variety, lose the common obsessions over tackle or size of fish, and celebrate the small but ‘magical’ elements of what we all love doing…
If that also helps a few people chill out, feel inspired to have a go themselves, or that they’ve been on a little trip out with me, then I’m happy 😊 🎣🐟 Cheers for now.
As always, another stunning video. I especially enjoyed the beginning, I am always in awe of the early morning summer mist as it burns off with the rising of the sun - as if the land & nature is casting off yesterday to refresh & enjoy a new today. Your videos really are inspiring & enjoyable.👌🏻🎣
Many thanks for watching and then taking the time to leave such a lovely comment - really appreciate it and they always make my day. Cheers
You capture the reason I go fishing, many thanks John, great film. 👍
That means a lot - thanks 🙏
I used to fish that stretch regularly as a kid. Used to be gudgeon after gudgeon in those days. And if you pulled a little roach out it made your day as a youngster. One time I pulled out a little gudgeon that was deep in a jack pikes mouth. He got lucky that day, unbroken skin and lived to swim away rather than become pike dinner!
Nice! Gudgeon are sadly a bit rare on there these days but I’m glad to say plenty of roach and dace. They seem to dominate but I’ve also had perch, bream (up to 8lb), rudd and chub. In fact there have been lots of chublets this season, which is promising. I do get the odd gudgeon though, along with the odd eel and occasional pike! Cheers
Hope you're mate gets well soon we all need mornings like that.
Many thanks for watching - and for commenting! Keep them coming and appreciate the support 🙏👍🎣
Another great video John... your B roll of newark priory! I fished that stretch as a kid! With my Dad. Ive shared this with him as lives 2 mins from here
Brilliant - great to hear 👏🏼👍🎣😃
Hi John ,brilliant video mate 👍 can't beat fishing the river with quality looking fish well done mate 🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟
Thanks 🙏🎣
Just came across this video. Used to fish this part of the Wey back in the late 60s and 70s brigs back so many memories of fishing with my late dad. Also fish the Wey at Godalming where I lived 5 minutes from the river
Hello John and thanks for dropping me a line 😀 I love hearing from people who have got similar strong feelings and memories about the Wey. It’s grand you’re still fishing it now and I’ve never got round to trying Godalming, although my stepson and stepdaughter have attended college there. I’ve just started exploring a stretch with Farnham Angling Society, too, but it’s the river around Woking, Send, Ripley and Wisley that I’ll always know the best. Fishing it really helped me settle into the south east after moving down from Sheffield some 25 years ago and I write about it in my book. Glad you’ve found the channel and there are plenty more videos filmed on the Wey to enjoy. Cheers for now.
@@themagicoffishing I used to fish the Abbey area. Also what it’s now called theHoe Stream where you could get roach upto 3lb, big dace and perch. It was jungle fishing back then. Where the Hoe met the Wey it was great for big pike in the winter. I used to live in pepperharow road in Godalming and the stretch of the Wey there was good for big chub and for some reason big bream. You can’t beat being by the river or lake at 3am on a warm summer morning
A really nice film, thanks for sharing this special fishing-trip!
I especially enjoyed the „interludes and flash-backs”.
All the best for your buddy!
Many thanks 🙏 Really appreciate your support and particularly the comment 🎣👍 Hope you enjoy more of the videos on this channel and you’re welcome in the comments section anytime!
Lovely days fishing John, looks a gorgeous day and venue. Thanks for sharing.
Pete
Cheers, Pete, my pleasure!
Another nice relaxing video John. Can't wait to get my rods out again fishing the river Shannon.
Thanks Shannon! Hope you’re back on running water soon 🤞🎣
Lovely video to watch mate. Like you I'm a local and that's quite a walk to get there mate. What a beautiful place to be and fishing is an added bonus.
Yeah it’s a bit of a trek with the gear but that means it’s rarely fished by others (in my experience) 👍🎣 Agree it’s a lovely looking stretch and it gets a bit calmer during the week. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🙏
This is a place I used to fish back in the late 70s early 80s, and a lot of photography there, back when I fished here i caught grayling, I was telling Dave the bailiff,
i will return in the next few weeks, great video John, and well done for getting up early.
Im off to the river Thames tomorrow to try lol lol and catch a Barbel, so up at 3.45 four a 4 hour session before to many people wake up, and all the best mate.
You are exactly the kind of angler I’m in awe of - anything before 5am is pretty much middle of the night to me 😄 But I might be improving with age… Hooing to fish the Thames myself this year and I know it holds many big lumps, even if they can be few and far between at times. Gonna be a scorcher tomorrow so you are giving yourself the best chance. Tight lines 🎣
@@themagicoffishing I will fish maybe 4 hours, but will enjoy...every second, if I catch its a bonus, but a week of planning and tactics, thank you for your kind words, have a great weekend John.
Just moved near this river in the Hampshire section and looking really forward to fishing it
Sounds good! Hope I’ve provided a bit of an appetiser. You’ll find quite a few vids on the channel on the Wey, and also other venues in Hampshire. Farnham Angling Society is worth looking at if not already a member as they have a LOT of waters in the area. Cheers for now.
Another great video and glad to see your other half as well... Give Andy our best regards for a speedy recovery and look forward to your next endeavour :)
Tight lines !
Paul.
Thanks 👍
Hi John hope your well ! Great video what a lovely setting with amazing countryside and with the lovely fish you caught you couldn’t ask for more 😊👍
Thanks Andy 🙏 Glad you enjoyed and thanks for taking the time to comment - please keep ‘em coming 🎣👍
The tench were superb, crucians also, so healthy, wonderful setting with common terns busying themselves noisily above, black headed gulls competing for the highest screech & blue darter dragonflies in abundance, one settled on tip of my rod soaking up the rays. I was hoping there may be a hobby chasing them looking for a snack, but not to be. I tried Desborough cut last night, very quiet, using mussels for chub but no takers. Sleeping has become ridiculously bad recently, seems I have a condition called sleep apnea, waiting for a referral to get it sorted. Not going to let it rule me though, too much out there to enjoy. Tightest of lines & thank you for your undying passion for fishing, always look forward to next film. 🐟🪱🎣👍
Hope you get that referral before long 🤞
Great video as always 👍, I used to freeline for bleak when me and my friends were kids fishing at Walton on Thames in the late 70s, I miss fishing rivers
Thanks! Yep, they are a classic childhood fish, although I don’t really see any until I first fished the Trent in my teens. They weren’t everywhere in there but could show up in big shoals from time to time.
Lovely session John, keeps me going while I can't get out at the moment due to a house move, hopefully next week back on my beloved River Leam Warwickshire
Fantastic to hear! House move eh? Right up there with some of life’s major stressors, but exciting too. Never fished or even seen the Leam (which always reminds me how much fishing I’ve NOT done). Great you have a somewhere that you know and love intimately. Thanks for commenting and please keep ‘em coming.
Hiya John, now, that was a session. Fish all look pristine. Helicopters were going into Fairoaks for racing at Ascot. I was on Brookwood ponds that day, did ok, but I was in same form as England team, just couldnt get it together. Plagued with sleep disorder of late. Since then I had my first visit & definitely not my last to Marsh Farm, stunning! Keep on loving life mate, 🐟🪱🎣👍
Thanks very much! Yes, I did wonder if it was for the racing 🐎 They were everywhere at times! Glad you tried Marsh Farm and I need to get back there now it’s summer. Have a go for the tench and crucians. Feel for you with a sleep problem - I’ve suffered with poor sleep on an off over recent years and it can really make a day or week difficult. Lots of fresh air and exercise is the best cure whenever that’s possible.
Really appreciate you taking the time out to share not only the fishing experience of catching, but the amazing bonus of your surroundings especially that early morning experience that can only be equalled by an evening session at the end of the day, when life slows down and eternity graces the earth with time stopping and the natural world takes over - heavenly! Great to meet Rachel, just towards the end of reading the ‘Magic of fishing’ for the second time, so great to meet the characters who are so much an important part of your life that you’re willing to share with us. Glad Andy is on the mend, sounds like time will be an important part of the healing process, so best wishes to him also, as well as Rachel and family. 👩🌾🙏🫶🎣🌅👏👏👏🐟🤫👍
Many thanks for leaving such a brilliant and thoughtful comment - made my day 😍👍🎣 Really glad you’re enjoying the videos and are also familiar with the book 📕 Always love hearing that it’s brought some amount of pleasure to a fellow angling addict. Hope to see you again on the channel soon 🤩🤗
A nice video that mate , thanks for sharing again . That river looks bang on happy days ❤
Thank you 🙏
a nice therapeutic watch
thank you john
My pleasure.
What a beautiful place to fish John. Very nice video
Thanks man 🙏👍🎣
Another really enjoyable video, great early morning footage. Many thanks
Thanks! I was chuffed with it (as well as being genuinely blown away by it all).
Two legs on my Korum barrow chair had the same welding failure. Won't be buying again. Great video. Hope your mate gets well soon.
Thank you 🙏
This was a great watch! I also fish the River Wey
Good on you - it can provide some fantastic sport on its day 🎣
@@themagicoffishing oh! It certainly can! Who knows! Our paths may cross one day
Lovely blog mate. Even with my one eye I can see that you need some instruction on how to put the line through the eyes.
I guess you are away from home atm.
We will have to do the same on the thames shortly.
Great stuff mate and I’ll see you when you return. Hopefully behind a couple of barbel rods.
Thank you 😆 Eagle eyes! Or eye. Yep, I was so eager to set up I initially had the line around the top section but DID notice it myself, too, eventually… 😄
Nice one buddy lovely day 🎣😁
Thanks Paul!
brilliant video! I fished that stretch afew weeks ago for the first time and had 2 barbel. My first time on the trent also!
Nice work! 🎣🐟 Barbel are never easy from the Wey unless the conditions are spot on. And welcome to Trent fishing! That river is addictive and offers something completely different from the gentle Wey of course. Thanks for commenting and see you again soon 👍🐟🎣
Nice one john. Thanks
Cheers
My campaign this year. Bowers and upto Triggs.
Nice! Tight lines for that 🎣 Thanks for commenting - keep ‘em coming.
Love your videos 👏👍
Love your comment 😍
Great video. Interesting about the chair weld issue. I had the same happen to my chair 2 weeks ago, the weld broke in the same spot as yours. i guess 3 years of carting my gear around using the barrow kit has took its toll
Thanks. That’s all I can think - mine’s had about 8-9 years of heavy vibrations! Weird you’ve and similar - and recently - though. I must say (Korum) they have been mega helpful since I contacted them, although everyone is out of stock at the moment.
@themagicoffishing if it's the x25 I've found it hard to get a replacement. I'm looking at the s23 deluxe when funds allow as it takes the barrow kit
@@mattylamb9638 I have the s23 and i advise, Not to buy. Good other make and a trolley or barrow is my suggestion mate
@@Paul.anoldangler problem is I have invested in the barrow kit and loads of accessories for the korum
Are there any barble along the strech, I am sure there are Carp there, I used to catch some nice Chub over 40 years ago.
Definitely some nice carp and chub but I’ve never heard of a barbel from that particular stretch. There are supposed to be a few just upstream though, up towards the ruined Abbey, which is called the Abbey Stream. I’ve had some nice chub out of there but never connected with a barbel.
@@themagicoffishing Yea I had a feeling about that, ok mate, thank you.
hi john. been fishing the wey for a few years now. started my angling journey lure fishing for pike and perch i simply got bored, been fishing feeders and floats for some time now and i must say i enjoy it much more something about that float going down or tip going round. been catching perch up to 4lb on worm and maggots, few chub.. but i’m after something bigger, wey barbel. know any spots for chub and barbel in they wey john? near guildford way. great video as always mate
Hello! Thanks for a great comment 👍 Interesting to hear you’ve gone from predator / lure fishing (all the rage it seems) to more old skool angling with floats and feeders. I pretty much love all kinds of angling and agree wholeheartedly about the visual bite! Although feeling a take on a lure can be pretty exciting too. I’m jealous of a 4lb stripey - that’s a monster and good perch are rare in the Wey (in my experience). The Thames seems to be the place for them but I’ve only just discovered fishing in that river as you may have seen. As for the Wey, I have strong associations and happy memories with the river but only know Woking’s stretches well - plus a few new Farnham AA spots - and sadly haven’t explored much around Guildford. Not yet anyway…
@ some good perch and chub, even a few old carp near guildford john 👀
Nice video, I know the Wey pretty well and the Ripley stretch that featured in the opening part of the video used to be good but for me it’s been ruined by paddled boarders and wild swimmers. The little car park before the bridge is now full all day from the early morning by paddle boarders cars so turning up for a bit of speculative fishing is out of the question. Bloody shame really as it means lake fishing is fast becoming a more attractive option.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Martin! Great to hear from another local angler. Yeah, I know what you mean about how popular that stretch has got with other river users - particularly since the days of lockdown. I find weekends a bit too crowded, like you, but midweek is still fine if I can get a day off. I also fish it a fair bit in autumn and winter (if it’s not too coloured). Glad you enjoyed the watch and you’re welcome to enjoy and comment on the many other local videos to be found in the channel! Tight lines for now 🎣🐟
looks fantastic is it on a day ticket?
Thanks 🙏 ☺️ I’m afraid not, although there are stretches of the Wey available for free, such as in Guildford. The area I was fishing that day is run by Woking and District Angling Association. Cheers for now 🎣🐟
breaks barrow and invites wife down, smart move that 😉
😄
