William Gay is absurdly underestimated. Such a great writer. Twilight isn't my favourite of his, but I devoured in a couple of sittings just the same. Horror (High) Literature done correctly. From the first time I've read William Gay, I knew he wrote in an antiquated fashion, you can hear it while reading: he wrote longhand, of course; I'm yet to read a Great Novel written directly in a word processor running in a multi-core computer. William gay was a true artist. And he seemed like a very genuine and interesting man. Absolutely great choice for reviewing.

Gay's short story The Paperhanger will haunt me until my last breath.

William Gay is/was a great novelist, a very worthy heir to the lineage of southern gothic writers like Cormac McCarthy, William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Conner, etc. Another spectacular review by Cliff, if you're new to his site go back into his other reviews and prepare to be astounded, he's that damn good and that damn entertaining.

He wrote a more pace-y novel, Provinces of Night, in 2000. “I have a lot of books and books are better if you can share them.” Yep.

Got to talk to Ron Rash when he came to uni forever ago. He’s so soft spoken. Saints at the River is my favorite by him. But the ending of Serena is epic. David Joy has a great Instagram (lol) and I prefer The Line that Held Us/When These Mountains Burn to his earlier stuff

Great review! If you like William Gay, you might want to check out Daniel Woodrell. He has recieved quite a bit of critical acclaim. Daniel Woodrell has been frequently compared to William Faulkner and Cormac McCarthy. He writes what he coined as hillbilly or rural noir. Most of his stories are set in the backwoods of the Missouri Ozarks. The first novel I read by him was 'Winter's Bone'. Cool novel, worth a read.

I actually got this book as a gift last Christmas! :D I really love William Gay; he was a master of prose. The Long Home was one of the most gorgeously written things I think I've read. Can't wait to get to this one now! :)

Do you still critique the writing that people send to you?
I have a finished poetry collection, that is quite philosopical in nature and i`m trying to get it published, which is a challenge
but it is a sort of work that is more geared towards people with a good understandings of classics, some greek and existentialist philosophy(mainly Nietzsche)

Icebound: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World by Andrea Pitzer is my book this Halloween. It's an historical read on arctic exploration in the late 1500's, following one particular Dutch crew trying to find an expedient trade route to China through the ice. It is perfectly chilling and semi-Lovecraftian, reminding me personally of At the Mountains of Madness. Is there a name for the subgenre of "winter naval period horror," like this or the first season of the television series The Terror in 2018? If there is, I'm a sucker for it.

I like your shirt! Just a heads up: For some reason it became very difficult for me to find your Werewolf by Montague Summers review. "better than food werewolf" no longer works for example, I only found bc it was in a playlist. Now I can still find it searching the exact name. Would be great if it got fixed (can you really ever fix RUclips?) as thats my favourite review of yours and I wish more people could find it! I rewatch it every Halloween

I haven't read Twilight (yet) but maybe the town's name is more a reference to Huracan the god of wind, storm, and fire, one of the creators of man. Not sure, but just throwing it out there until I can give it a read.

Have you ever heard of Cox: Or, the course of time. ? It's a book about an english clock maker who gets an invitation to come to china to build different kinds of clocks for the emperor. In the book the clash between those two cultures as well as the healing process of cox from traumatic experiences through his art is shown through the symbolic of different themed clocks. I originally read it in german but there is an english version as well. Seeing your general taste in books it was something i wanted to recommend. ^^

Dude, I feel the same way. It’s like, he’s right there, picking away at something truly great with his fingernails and then it just kind of crumbles and turns to dust. Good stuff, but just right on the cusp… like… you can see the finish line and then you pass out exhausted.
