  • "How to wire turn signals and brake lights into a single filament bulb?" is a question I often get. It is slightly tricky to do, but very doable with the help of some relays and a RUclips video. The key to making there whole thing work is understanding how a relay works, specifically pin 87A. That is the pin on the 5 pin Bosch style relay that allows this functionality to work. Hopefully this video helps you wire your tail lights and turn signals on your automotive project!

      can you expand this setup to include a hazard light switch? and what it would take to make hazards operate at the same time that brakes do? in other words single filament bulbs used in the rear for brake and blink but when hazard lights are activated the brake switch will still illuminate the rear lights solid, not blinking

    • @AztecWarrior69

      @@straightouttheshed Adding hazards is easy. Just use a DPDT (On-OFF) switch and a diode will do all of that. Can use that SPDT switch or a OEM on the column Turn Signal Switch.
      If you are making from scratch like on a dune buggy or ATV or Go Cart, then you can use just 2 relays, 2 DPDT Switches and 3 diodes.. Less wiring.

    First off WONDERFUL videos
    I have learned from them. They way you explain and build them out os perfect.
    I've been combing through your videos looking for something matching what im trying to do on my 2008 Tundra.
    Right now, I have the ALL the interior removed and trying to think ahead on some wiring changes I want to do since I'm here. I don't want to remove all this again.
    I am making my truck kind of a "show" vehicle that is a "tactical" and have the ability to manipulate different aspects of "black out drive". Oneday will try and include a FLIR system (maybe).
    I am trying to do a
    -one switch activation to kill all rear lighting (i.e., breaks, reverse, marker) along with the interior door activation switchs (so if any door is opened, nothing indicates it).
    However, where I rub my head, do that this is not my level of expertise, is how do I have an indicator switch (when turned to "kill mode") indicate with no power to the rear lighting? Not the other way around, where the indicator is "on" when the lights are working, then is "off" when in "kill mode".
    I hope that makes sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    For hazard lights, switch needs a 4th position that sends power out both sides (to the 4 white wires) Therefore activates all 4 relays instead of just two.
    Or you could wire in a seperate hazard switch with its own power feed, send the power out to a flasher relay then the 4 white wires or pin 86 of all 4 relays

Second of all the relay connectors I purchased were not wired as yours are. That took a bit to figure out. The clue was that the stop light switch activated the turn flasher..... oh, that's not right.....Once I realized the issue I just had to follow your chart and de-pin the connectors and re-pin as yours are. Quick question for you on the "ire Turn Signals AND Brake Lights into a ONE BULB" video: This is exactly what I need as I have completely removed all factory parts and wiring on a street/strip vehicle but in order to run the car on the street, obviously I need turn signals and brakes.
    That being said, I AM using std. 1157 dual filament bulbs up front and in the back of the car, so... Do I wire it the same way you demonstrate in the video or is there a tweak required because of the 3 contacts on the 1157's vs. the 2 contacts on the 194's in your demo?
    Thank you very much!

    thank you very much for this video. I do not like have the brake light turn off only to flash on the rear. I never understood having a one filament bulb having two functions. In the early 60s I rewired all my VW Bugs and Vans to have a separate rear double sided brake light with a separate amber left or right turn signal. Now I am wiring up a self powered 7 Way trailer light test box. I was really disappointed when I found out that the 7 wires in a 7 Way trailer light circuit used the terrible combined brake and turn signal system. I needed this circuit to duplicate what the towing vehicle "tells" the trailer. I just wish you had included much simpler to follow .

      @@AztecWarrior69 I put them on a garden tractor. I did not require the ignition to be on in order for the lights to work(brake, hazard, etc). I definitely considered the fact that hazards disable brake lights with this arrangement but for my purposes, I don't think it is that important. If I was putting them on an on-road vehicle, I would have a separate brake and turn signal. I know that there are many alternative options which I could have just as easily tried(using arrangements of diodes, relays, switches, etc) but I wanted to try something a little different and I would probably use one of these arrangements in the future if needed.

    • @ElectroTree01
      @ElectroTree01 4 месяца назад

      @@AztecWarrior69 Different was referring to something that I have not done before. I have used a combination of diodes and relays in the past. Maybe you didn't get the implication. Mowing, no. Thanks for the video! It was a great help. However, I have an issue with wiring my brake lights. I seemingly have all my wires set up just like you, except I have 2 relays instead of 4. I have my left side together and my right side together. All the blinkers and things work great, but the brake lights, specifically, do not light up. They do not brighten when pushing the brake switch. It's a brake switch like the one in the video (it closes the circuit when pressed). When I have the brake switch wired to power and the switch wired to the relay, and I press the turn signal, the turn signal lights stay on when the brake is pressed, but the rear lights still don't light up??? They only brighten up when I disconnect the brake switch from a power source, and the blinker works as it should. Could this be because of my relays are bad? They are brand new and both do this.

      I agree, I would like to incorporate a hazard flasher into this system. I there a way to put a switch into the flash circuit from the factory flasher to function like the factory hazard switch?

    Check out "Kwik Wire" chassis wiring harness i was very surprised to learn when i bought there kit they dont use relays for any lighting for the exception of there flasher and emergency flasher. Other then that no relays? They do use fuses but claim relays are not necessary due to there AWG of wiring is so heavy. I would love for you to order there 8 curcuit kit as i did and do a review on it with an explanation for there thinking???

      Solid question, and you are totally right under normal conditions, which you can see in this video I made ruclips.net/video/QCkfFCLa_Jg/видео.html. However - this specific video is a special case when we are using them in reverse to get the desired result we need. As long as the proper fuse sizes and wires sizes are in place, it should function just fine. As I’ve said in a whole bunch of my videos, there are many ways to wire a circuit, and this is just one. :) Thanks for watching and posting this question - I wish I had planned better and answered this in the video itself! Ah well, each video I learn a little and try to make the next one incrementally better. Thanks again.

    I like your wiring, but one more question:
    while breaking and signaling a turn, how does the Relais stays on during flashing without a capacitor? In my mind, when the turn signal switches from on to off and back to on, in the off phase of the flash there isn’t power sent to the Relais, isn’t it?

    I know others have asked but they either didn't receive a reply or their reply doesn't answer my specific question. Im employing this system but if i was to add hazards how would I do that? Could it just be setup for the hazards switch trigger pin 87 on all 4 relays and if so would anything bad happen if the turn signal switch got turned on? I understand with that setup the hazards wouldn't work without the ignition on, correct? I know this is a lot but would appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance.

    This was a great video and really helped me solved getting the brake light and turn signal portion of rewiring my 1965 Corvair, thanks a bunch! One small request though, is there any way you could include how to have a brake switch connect to a relay to send power through pin 87A on the LR and RR relays? I was able to figure it out on my own but someone may need the heads up before they try to hook up their brake lights through a >5 amp switch.

      "how to have a brake switch connect to a relay to send power through pin 87A on the LR and RR relays?"
      Did you not watch the video? That is the way it is in this video.
      Are you meaning to say that you want use the brake switch to energize a 5th relay and that is what connects brake power to the other two relays?
      And what's wrong with using a Greater Than (>) 5 Amp Switch?

    Fantastic video!!! Quick question. I'm restoring a '36 Ford that originally used this circuit with single-filament bulbs, but I want to upgrade to a 3-wire (brake, tail, ground) LED unit so the lights are brighter. Does this circuit still apply, or could I run separate brake, turn, and tail circuits as if they were all separate bulbs, and then run them through one of those Curtis 4 to 3 wire adapters like you find on trailer towing kits? Thanks!

    • @AztecWarrior69
      @AztecWarrior69 4 месяца назад

      First off. "'36 Ford that originally used this circuit with single-filament bulbs" No it does not use this circuit. It does not use relays at all. It uses a slider turn signal switch.
      "and then run them through one of those Curtis 4 to 3 wire adapters like you find on trailer towing kits?"
      That's not how those kits work. You actually have to have the wiring already there.
      In order for you to have seperate the circuits at the switch by taking off the brakes and running it separate to the rear (whole new wire)
      "3-wire (brake, tail, ground) LED unit so the lights are brighter."
      It is not being 3 wire that makes it brighter, since the power draw is the same. It is the type of bulb, Gauge wire, quality of the switch, that are the determining factors of brightness.

    Thanks for all your videos about relays, I have learned a lot from. I have a question about a 3 wire light for turn signal and side marker, I want it to cancel the marker when I put the blinker but don’t think it’s possible with one relay because if I wire the the marker to 87 and my blinker to 87a I would have to turn my side marker off via switch every time I would turn my blinker on for 87a to work. If I wire side marker to 87a I don’t think would work either. Any ideas would be appreciated ? Thanks again

    • @AztecWarrior69
      @AztecWarrior69 4 месяца назад

      The wiring is almost the same. Difference is that you will wire the running light circuit, to the side marks, in place of the brakes. And it can be done using only two relays. Of course you will need to Either change out your turn signal switch to a DPDT. Or use timer relays.
      It all depends if you are trying to do this as a "from scratch" wiring or trying to add this to non modified stock vehicle.
      So you should start by giving more details about the vehicle you intend to do this on.
      I have diagrams.

      I’m not sure it’s legal to have a hazard button with single bulb stop/turn set up, as hazards on would mean no brake lights. Generally cars that used this set up were produced before hazards were invented.

    I've been wanting to modernize the wiring on my 1966 VW bus for a while now using modern day relays and fuses and was wondering if any of your videos show how to wire a single LED tail light to work the tail lights, brake lights and turn signals since that'll be the almost the same on my VW bus which uses a single dual filament bulb to work all of those circuits. Great videos by the way.

    • @AztecWarrior69
      @AztecWarrior69 4 месяца назад

      Why? Unless you don't already have the wiring, then it is just a one for one swap. Fuse box: just upgrade and reconnect. Flasher: Swap out for an LED flasher. Lights: Swap out the lights for LED.

    The issue is that when your at the back of a car and your trying to use this method, you dont have a switch to turn the relays on...No one is going to run a 3 way switch to the front of their car to be able to use their turn signals and brake lights...Just sayin...
