Dr. Clevens | Is there anything I should avoid before laser hair removal?

Dr. Ross Clevens: Let's talk a little bit about what to avoid before your own laser hair removal session. Ideally laser hair removal would be performed on skin that has not been sunburned, sun tanned or been subjected to a tanning bed. It's also important that the skin be fresh and clean. Be careful with the use of depilatories or shaving before laser hair removal, so that you don't nick or damage the surface of the skin that may compromise laser hair removal. In addition, it's very important to avoid medications both applied topically or to the surface of the skin where medications taken by mouth that sensitize the skin to the sun.
Because laser hair removal is using light energy, we don't want to sensitize the skin to the sun that may again make laser hair removal unsafe or not perform as well as we wanted to. Be certain that your skin is not tanned or burned, that you're not taking any medications by mouth that sensitize the skin to the sun, or you're not using any medications topically that might sensitize the skin to the sun and also be careful depilatories or shaving so you don't nick or damage the integrity of the surface of the skin before your laser hair removal appointment.
