Asylum seekers staying in UK emergency accommodation are living in fear following a spate of anti-refugee protests.
Members of far-right group Patriotic Alternative have in recent days joined demonstrations outside hotels in Skegness, Knowsley and Rotherham that the UK Home Office is using to host people awaiting the outcome of their asylum applications.
Patriotic Alternative denies that it led the protests in Knowsley, but one of the group’s members delivered an inflammatory speech at a meeting in Dunstable hearing local people’s concerns about the arrival of asylum seekers at a hotel in the town. Anti-racism organisation Hope Not Hate says far-right groups are targeting local communities with leaflets and social media posts packed with anti-refugee disinformation and misinformation.
Refugee rights groups say people staying in temporary accommodation are scared they will be attacked if they step outside. They warn that recent provocative statements about refugees and asylum seekers by the UK’s Home Secretary and other members of the ruling Conservative Party is giving succour to far-right groups.
In this episode of The Stream, we’ll look at what is driving anti-refugee sentiment in cities and towns across the UK and ask what is needed to protect asylum seekers from harm.

@@garriejackson9551 those ‘colonised’ Countries didn’t put up much of a fight did they, so I suspect there were several factions within those Countries who weren’t particularly bothered by said Colonisation. Look at India, they repelled Alexander the Great and the Mongols prior to the British but somehow couldn’t overthrow a dozen men with a couple of rifles and a bayonet. Horrible as it was for them they were culpable in their own colonisation.

No foreigner can stay in any of these countries unless they are employed. They are also NOT permitted to change their nationality, hold a position in government and MUST return to their native country within two weeks of stopping work.

It’s not about race or culture it’s about the individuals. I wouldn’t want 10’000 of the poorest Aussies coming to the UK, the country can’t cope as it is and then is having to spend Billions trying to integrate people that don’t want to be integrated.

@Carly Hawthorne I'll tell ypu why, because foreign students are allowed to work, the new policy is they can now apply for a tier 2 skilled worker visa and not finish their course. Plus the government are giving 15 million to universities to help foreign students pay for food etc. The government should be using that 15 million to subsidies our kids to go to uni instead. We do need skilled workers to fill the gaps that uk citizens can't, else companies couldn't function and would close so british citizens would lose their jobs, but jobs such as care workers and other jobs where they rely on foreigners, the government should be paying to train people and get them off the dole, if the wage isn't good then make it so people can afford to live without penalties. The summer jobs could be filled by those on the dole, for the summer let them do the fruit picking while keeping their benifits so they can then get ahead ready for winter bills. Our country has it backwards.

Having listened to this I feel that listening to the British people, the message is clear, to illegal immigrants, don't come here. I'm not advocating for any group jut making the point that the idea that you can jump on a boat from countries like Pakistan and Albania and expect housing, a job and a better life, is a thing of the past. British people themselves are struggling from high taxes and housing shortages. Is that clear. I met a couple from York lwho had escaped England because of Sudanese gangs, they no longer felt safe in their own country.

Amanda Smith is a reporter and gives accurate reporting on what is going on in hotels, the hotels that are paid for by working people at a cost of £10 million a day just for hotel rooms. Knowlsey protest was over a 25 year old talking to a 15 year old schoolgirl wanting her phone number and to be her boyfriend even though she said she was 15. 2 gay men in Sligo were beheaded by an Iranian refugee last April. We have rapes and murders that have been committed by asylum seekers. We have citizens who have no homes yet our government is not housing them in hotels. They live on the streets and sleep on the floor. Rotherham and Rochdale are 2 cities were grooming gangs of Muslim men raped children and even impregnated. There is factual evidence, the men are imprisoned! The homeless on the street are not offered homes, this Guardian woman is not being truthful. If there were actually asylum seekers the British people wouldn’t mind we are a very welcoming country, unfortunately most of them are economic migrants who are just taking advantage of our system. We approve a far higher percentage than the EU and they are being coached by human rights lawyers to make up stories so they can get round our rules to stay. Also we have a bad housing problem in the UK and we don’t have enough properties for people already here, so many people live in either temporary or unsuitable housing, and our services are completely unsuitable, for example our NHS is in a complete mess. Most people want to help genuine asylum seekers but we just feel like we are getting taken advantage off, if more were women & children we would be more sympathetic as well.

The guardian recently ran an article called “Don’t be surprised when asylum seekers are attacked”. The example they gave was from 20 years ago when one of them was murdered. So this answers your question. They are not being attacked. However it seems a few times a month there is a story about asylum seekers committing murder and r@pe. But that doesn’t seem to be an issue.
When they leave the country they will be safe, we are not safe while they are here.

Asylum seekers are women and children not men.
Men who kill women come from all walks of life, but this is not simply about comparing the rate of men’s fatal violence against women committed by police officers against that of the general population of men, or men from other professions. It is about what the widespread and serious violence and abuse of women and children says about the police and their ability to do what they are supposed to do. The police rightly hold themselves to a higher standard of behaviour, they set themselves apart. They know and agree to this when they sign up. This is rarely the case with other professions. The job of the police is to uphold the law and prevent crime and bring justice to victims and perpetrators of crime. They’re supposed to protect, help and reassure the community; and on top of that to do and be seen to do this with integrity. They cannot do this if they’re abusing, denigrating, raping and killing women and children.
Absolutely. However, this does not mean it is best practice to import even more people who commit these crimes, as clearly we have enough 'home-grown' murderers as it is. Furthermore, the elephant in the room needs to be addressed: Islamic culture does not share western values when it comes to women. Just look how fast Afghanistan has regressed regarding women's rights since the west pulled out of the country.
