The world watched as the plane idled on the Beirut runway. The access ramp at the back of coach was lowered. It was at this moment that a dozen heavily armed men stormed the plane. This must be a rescue operation, thought Tony. The passengers would soon be free - the nightmare over. The hijackers stood in the aisle as the militia filled the cabin. Hope of a rescue evaporated when Tony saw the hijackers and militia laughingly embrace each other.

I was a flight attendant during this time, for TWA. I was international. I flew this same route as the first flight to fly that same route after this hijacking. Security was never the same. It changed over night. I was very young but fully realized the seriousness of this incident. So sad. God bless these brave men. 💗🙏🏼

Why was security at Athens airport so poor? How on earth did they smuggle a pistol and grenades through scanning machines??
I flew to Athens in 1988.I’d like to think security was better by then…but Athens had similar problems after the hijacking’s of TWA 847

What an amazing story of true heroism. Suggs had me extremely emotional. I was just over a month old when this happened so I do not remember it. This was a great way of showing our history.

I piloted KC-135(R) StratoTankers, in the PA-ANG, back in those days, through GW1; very often, I'd have to travel via commercial aviation to arrive near a military base, where I could catch a ride to a base which would get me to my ultimate destination. Non-military travel became "more difficult, by necessity" after TWA-847; and Basic Military Training in NATO Countries, was augmented, to add training scenarios designed to deal with "general hostage taking situations". It was this training, that some believe, helped bring successful resolution to the 2015 Thalys train attack.

@@kevinkibble8342 Kevin with all due respect sir I believe the hijacker you speak of, Mohammed Ali Hammadi, was captured in 1987 at Frankfurt International Airport and ultimately convicted in West Germany of not only this hijacking and the killing of Robert Stethem but additional crimes and was sentenced to life in prison.
He was was paroled in 2005 by German officials and returned to Lebanon. There’s speculation that his parole was granted as part of a covert prisoner swap, in exchange for the release of West German citizen Susanne Osthoff in Iraq. In 2019 Greek officials thought they had caught him in Greece but they later said it was a case of mistaken identity.
      - Imad Mughniyeh is believed to have died in a car bomb explosion in Syria 2008.
      - Ali Atwa died of cancer in Lebanon 2021.
      - Hasan Izz-Al-Din believed to be alive and living in Lebanon.
All the others who were involved directly or indirectly I can only assume are either dead, living in Lebanon or the Middle East somewhere and have bounties on their heads.
Seems this is all I could find about the TWA Flight 847 Hijackers.

Yes. The entire movie was based on the hijacking of TWA 847. The producers approached us and asked if they could use our name and aircraft for filming.
      That request was quickly denied.
Hence the fictitious ATW airlines, that was used in the film.

I am currently in Iraq and in Jan 1985 when I was getting ready to get out of the navy I was drinking with Bob Stethem in the leprechaun in VA Beach with a man named rick futchirelli (EOD) who later became a SEAL . I knew bobby was in UCT because his brother Ken was an EOD guy like myself and then a few months later the incident happened in Beirut . These people are nothing but rabid animals. His brother Ken also became a SEAL

I knew Robert from battalion NMCB62 and remember him very well. At some point he mentioned that he was going to try going Seal but always talked about going to being a Navy Diver. He would run for miles during home port in Gulfport. I was on Det Adak when I heard about what had happened. It still to this day makes my blood boil about what happened. He will never be forgotten in this house hold. God rest his soul.

One of the 3 original hijackers aboard TWA 847 in June 1985, Muhammed
Ali Hummadi, was apprehended in Mykonos, Greece after disembarking from
a ship on Friday. His identity showed up on the radar as being wanted
in Germany during a passport check.
Hummadi was arrested back in 1987 in Frankfurt, and convicted in a
court in Germany for air piracy and the brutal murder of Robert Stethem
aboard TWA 847. He was known to be an member of Hezbollah, received an
life sentence but was paroled in 2005 and returned to Lebanon. He is
    also a suspect in a 1987 abduction.
He was also wanted by the FBI in one of the top terrorist in the most wanted list. See here: www.fbi.gov/wanted/wanted_terrorists/mohammed-ali-hamadei
