This is my third year since I planted my Wolf’s Eye Dogwood. First and second years it did not bloom. When the leaves finally showed up they were a pretty bright variegated white/green color. My dogwood faces South and in the heat of the summer the leaves get very stressed and develop brown spots. By fall the leaves are so sickly looking that the tree does not put on a show during fall. Leaves fall off very quickly. Luckily the shape of my tree is unique. While many dogwoods are horizontal my is upright. So the branching is unique and pretty to look at. This year I see a ton of new growth. And a ton of buds that yet to open. This year I’m leaving the tree alone. I’m not spraying it or fertilizing. I’m letting Mother Nature do her thing because I’m convinced I’m loving my tree to death. Fingers crossed it will bloom. Great presentation. Thank you.

Any thoughts in regards to Cicada damage.....we have a couple of 4-5 year old "Princess" and "Brave" which were heavily damaged by Cicadas this Spring here in Missouri placing slits throughout the young twigs/branches and laying eggs in the holes. We are growing these trees in whiskey barrels as we don't have much topsoil on top of a limestone bluff. It is my understanding the larvae of the Cicadas will hatch and fall into the ground where they feed on the roots for the next 13 years. (Brood XIX) Since I'm growing in a whiskey barrel are my trees more at risk from these larvae feeding on its container roots ? And if so should I prune the tree WAY back in an attempt to get rid of the damaged branches with eggs and just hope for the best ? I assume the other method is to just let Mother Nature work and treat the tree as a cicada damaged tree planted in the ground....basically the tree will heal itself and the dropped larvae will serve their natural purpose.

This is the second summer for my two dogwood trees. They are in full sun most of the day and has always looked stressed with the leaves curling. Bark at the bottom looks a bit brittle. See pictures and let me know. The landscaper 7:36 planted them in April of 2021. Not sure how to attach pictures.
