Just wanted to say thank you for uploading the subtitles with this rip. Even some official channels (looking at you C4) don’t upload them, despite them having been broadcast with subtitles.
Very sorry to see Open go - a lovely bunch who don't even share a campus! Well done, Christ Church - some incredible early buzzes. Farewell to Gavaghan's Glasses!
Mr Wotton did very well and I saw his extra happiness with those welsh bonuses 😉. Annoyingly this match's outcome was spoiled by the BBC 'accidentally' disclosing next week's games participants before they took it down. Very slow, and lots of dropped starters, but Christ Church's prize nonetheless is one last chance against my own Manchester I believe ⚔. Which means Birkbeck will play Trinity in a fortnight. Will miss Open very much 😥 - they've done so well, but a shame this match had to be their worst with only 5/18 bonuses.
So sorry to see the losing team go - they put up a great fight through the tournament. Many congrats to the winners - well done you all!! Looking forward to seeing you in the coming weeks. Thank you CP, once again, for putting this up so quickly.
Thanks again, CosmicPumpkin! A close match at the first that became a rout as the match progressed. The winning team was just more knowledgeable about the questions asked, and quicker on the buzzer as well. The losing team was a wonderful group, and I'm sad to see them go. But it is a competition after all, and the better team most definitely won. My best to both teams, and to each individual.
Am happy to see Gorgianah getting into her element and seeming to enjoy the game more (though she got a few wrong). Like what Amol said, the team seems to be hitting their stride at the right time.
Me three!!! Those questions were often about the arts & they still missed the answers. I don’t know if Christ Church will get into the final but good luck & job well done!!!
@@johnahearn7964 I don’t mind that they missed the answers so much-it was _the way_ they missed the answers. They’d try to figure out the answers and were very often wrong, sort of like that kid who thinks he’s the smartest one in the class but isn’t. (In contrast, a team like Birkbeck - London was really good at coming up with the answers.)
Christ Church’s Arthur Wotten did fantastically well this match-his answer regarding the “early astronomical device” on the flag of Portugal 22:57 really surprised me as I had no idea about what the flag of Portugal even looked like (and, if I had, it wouldn’t have occurred to me that that “device” even _had_ a name!). He was ably assisted by teammates Eliza Dean and Melika Gorgianeh (with Elliot Lowe chiming in). Amol Rajan, somewhat untypically, refers to Gorgianeh’s area of expertise-“If only you had an astrophysicist on your team” 9:12-which she takes in good stride. She _does_ name the possible answers to all the questions but guesses wrong on one of them, the kind of thing that haunts one. The Christ Church team gives the impression of actually _knowing_ the answers-Wotten just nails them-in contrast to Open University, who seem to be trying to deduce the answers-which _can_ work, just not as well-a lot of the time. In these final matches, the questions _do_ seem a lot harder-I myself got only eight correct this match but at least one answer, regarding “primordial soup” 4:46, was one that _none_ of the contestants knew, which counts as some sort of consolation.
There's been a recent twitter attack on Gorgianeh and I just want to reach out and say I've been so pleased to see her come into her stride in this challenge. She possesses everything the UK should be proud of as a doctoral student competitor. And great job to all, for this episode and the whole series!
you know what ? that first collective question about the Matter of France ? i had never heard of it !! i did learn something about my country history, through a British tv programme.
These folks are so knowledgeable that when they don't know something, it sometimes comes as a shock. "Black Swan" in the sense Taleb defines it has become a basic part of vocabulary in some circles, it really took me by surprise when they didn't know that one.
for me it was not knowing that "Lutra lutra" is otter, but in my circles every now and then there's discusison abt abimals whose latin names are two words repeated
Yes. I was very surprised no one knew Black Swan was the answer especially as I was watching UC in my library and could see the Nassim Taleb book. As you say,, it is a term that often comes up in conversation.
Thanks again, Cosmic P! Again this week, the team on past stats who probably should have won didn't! However, without Witton being on fire tonight for CC-O, the result would probably have been different!
Maybe I was just lucky but I was surprised how many answers I got today including a few which eluded them. Usually at this stage of the competition most of them fly by me, unanswered.
Good game! Sorry that Open didn,t surge ahead...expected more action from Davidson. Wotton was amazing! Two very likeable teams. Well done to them all, congrats to Christchurch on a well deserved win.
There is a mistake in the question about quaternions. Amol said that the symbols i, j and k were the unit vectors in the x, y and z directions. They are in fact three orthogonal square roots of minus 1,such that :- i squared = j squared = k squared = ijk = -1 When i, j and k are used as unit vectors in 3-space they are written as î, ĵ and k̂ and are called i-hat, j-hat and k-hat. Bamber would never had allowed such an error to get through.
Thanks from Allen, Texas Was hoping Open would win, but no to be. Got a few no/wrong answers, so not totally dead weight. Personally, I think Amo is doing a splendid job. Finally! Gavaghn states her roots and I *love* her glasses! No shame in being from Philly (even though I'm a Saints fan)
Wotton did well to hold his team together given two of the contestants look like some of the most nervous people one has ever seen on University Challenge
Just when I was getting fond of the losing team…am happy for the winning team though, I quite enjoy their more aggressive go-for-it style. I do wish Amol would stop making such a big deal of clapping for the opponents; isn’t it rather basic and common etiquette?
@@castelodeossos3947 exactly, it rings hollow when he says it so often and there’s really nothing to it, unless it was a very close and hard fought match.
Lot of sitters missed in this episode. For eg: JBS Haldane and moment. Also, it is quite unpardonable by UC standards to miss Periodic Table questions.
Poor Amol had to sit there and listen to them butcher the pronunciation of Malayalam 😄 (Based on his name, Amol is most likely of Malayali ancestry himself.) To be fair, the fault is with the anti-phonetic nature of English spelling and the way the transliteration "Malayalam" really gives you no clue about the vowel lengths.
There's also a (proud?) British tradition of blithely mispronouncing even well known foreign placenames. One example I'll always remember was an announcer on the BBC World Service pronouncing PITTSBURGH to rhyme with EDINBURGH.
Thanks for the upload as always CosmicPumpkin. Personally I am glad not to be further subjected to Ms Gsvaghan's riduculous eyewear in this competition. Apart from being a genuine and general distraction, I distinctly got the impression that she was unable to make important eye contact with her team. Some fashion is just plain dumb.

Wotton absolutely broke the back of that quiz - think he almost singlehandedly dragged Christ Church from 55-55 to 135-55 or something.
