“Knowing that I’m better than that but questioning whether I really am.” Thoroughly enjoyed this series and the commentary with it. Very relatable. Great stuff and congrats on the bull!
I appreciate it Jay! Thank you!
I respect that you at least acknowledge that there is room for improvement. That's more than can be said for a lot of people who take marginal shots. Good on you for seeing it through.
Just simply let the thought of “what I could do” get in the way of what was probably going to happen, that I knew was going to happen!
It’s refreshing to watch a hunting video on RUclips without gear and equipment ads stuffed down my throat every couple of minutes. Well done on the video and Congrats on the Bull!
I appreciate it Tyler!
Great video! Congratulations on finding your bull. Your comments after you found your bull were well spoken.
Thank you for the kind words. I was very thankful to come out on the positive end of a screw up!
Loved your honesty of that feeling when your lost in the moment, it happens to anyone and everyone who hunts long enough even with a rifle. What an awesome journey you took us on and thankful you were able to find him
Thank you Brady. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much and understood what it was like!
Great content bud 👌. The videos are great and showing the true hunt without editing the video is what keeps us watching your videos.
Thank you!
Incredible hunt! I highly respect your willingness to admit what most of us won't!
Thank you Michael!!
Congrats on a great Colorado bull! We have all been in your shoes that have put in the miles and work! It was meant to be and god blessed you. I think a cow is a blessing with a bow on a DIY hunt in Colorado. Thanks for keeping it real!
I appreciate your kind words Jason. Thank you!
Way to persevere. Congrats!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! I appreciate it!
What a great series, Trent! Really admire your honesty and how you owned your shot, and put in the max effort on the recovery and never gave up! Looking forward to seeing more of your content in the future
Thank you Jason! So glad you enjoyed it!
Really enjoy your style of hunting and calling. Your honesty and commentary is refreshing and makes me reflect on my past mistakes and successes. thanks for sharing
I appreciate your kind words Gene! Thank you!
Dude, just found your content, awesome job. Dig your personality. I'm gonna dive into your content!
Thank you Jeremiah! Not always the best cinematography, but you’ll figure that out! 😂😂
I have archery elk hunted for 24 years and I truly respect how you made that happen and got it on video. I’ve taken several frontal shots and I’ve been lucky enough to find my bulls. Thanks for bringing back those memories.
I appreciate it! Thank you!
Great video capturing all the hard work and ethical dilemmas wrapped into hunting. That's a well earned bull-congratulations. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Loved going along with you.
I appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it!
Trent, good job. Oh the roller coaster we ride as hunters - especially as elk hunters! Don't beat yourself up over a shot. We have all been there, and it is easy to judge AFTER the shot. Great commentary. Keep up the good work sir.
I appreciate it Mike. Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos!
I’m happy to hear that! Thank you for taking the time to comment!
Agreed, glad you were relentless in finding him. Well done and congratulations!
Thank you!
Enjoyed the whole thing especially the retrospective.
Thank you!
I've lost elk. Not from giving up but like you said not feeling confident in the shot. Happy for you man! Love the honesty.
I appreciate it Torey. Thank you for watching and understanding!
Man - way too hard on yourself. Appreciate your effort and determination and skills. Learn as much (or more), from your honest and real videos and commentary than most all other Uber-polished ones. Really enjoy your work and efforts. Keep it up - you’re fun to follow :).
Maybe I am/was and I’ve thought about that plenty but I practice too much and respect these animals too much than to continue to take dumb shots. It bugs me deep down…if you can’t tell. Thanks for enjoying the vids!
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 I’ve been there myself unfortunately it isn’t all the practice that keeps us from those shots being a great archer and confident in our abilities sometimes leads us to believe we can make the shot, I really believe it’s taking them that teaches us not too. You did great man you took a high risk shot, owned it played your tracking game perfectly and found the bull congrats man success isn’t always pretty but it always leaves something to be learned.
@@KC-7mm Very great way to look at it. Thank you for more kind words! I appreciate you!
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 hey Trent just out of curiosity where did that arrow land between curiosity and helping guys in a future tracking Job if they could remember the scenario “which I wouldn’t “ be interesting to know where that arrow hit
@@KC-7mm Basically high in the throat. Right below the chin if he’s looking at you. Got his esophagus and an artery evidently
Mad respect for someone who can admit when they are in the wrong. Double mad respect for a person who did the right thing. It's worth watching to the end.
Draw unit and still getting people hunting on top of you, i have to hunt OTC in Colorado. It can be frustrating to even find elk all to yourself.
Thank you sir.
It happens all over and it’s a bit odd. I just don’t know why people want to hunt right where someone else is.
Man, I'm glad I came across your video. Going to be my first year archery hunting after 5 years rifle. So much good here, from your strategies to questioning the ethics of your shot and being brutally honest about it, within a culture where we are really hard on each other. Thanks for putting this out there, great learning experience for me.
Cam, I’m glad you got so much from the video and enjoyed it so much. I’m grateful for that! Good luck this fall!
I liked and subscribed about half way thru just cause I liked your honesty and how you came across. Elk hunting makes you do some silly things and often I go on auto pilot and I can say it hasnt always worked out....but like you I strive to be better and will give it up once that is gone. Hope you are getting ready to get out and back at it soon! My season starts on Sat!! Thank you for sharing.
I appreciate that very much. thank you! I’m after it right now. Found a high spot on a ridge with some cell service. Good luck!!!
Heck yeah man at least you found him I did the same thing myself solo 2.3 miles.was about to give up until I turned left and found him. Shouldn't have taken that shot either but the outcome was a success. Probably won't take a frontal again unless he's standing at20 or less.
I think it’s a pretty safe shot 20 and less. I just remember my pin burning a hole where it needed to be and I had that moment of “I can make this shot.” Which I can if he doesn’t move lol. Glad you found yours as well!!!
Excellent video. Appreciate your willingness to share.
Glad you enjoyed it Shawn!
Congratulations man nice bull!
Thank you!
great series and a great ending glad you persivered and found your bull that he deserved , when you seen that much lood at the site on the shot you know it can only end one way with a dead bull , congratulations ,
Thank you! I appreciate your kind words!
Awesome hope that first beer was a good one. Hats off for doing that on your own. Couldn’t imagine the work that took by yourself 👍🏻👍🏻🤙🏼
Thanks Armando. It definitely is hard work. this was a relatively easy pack job. I have had plenty that are multiple days.
Great series Trent! Gets me all jacked up!! Good luck this fall. Looking forward to seeing your successes
Thanks buddy! Looking forward to following along, on yours, as well!
My hat's off to you ..impressive lot's of motivation from you ....following your adventures now great job brother
Thank you Carlos. Glad you enjoyed that portion. Sometimes feels a bit embarrassing letting everything out for others to see but it feels “right” to me!
AWESOME VIDEO MAN! Thank you for this video. You prove hard work pays off.! Thanks again man. Awesome video.!🙏🏽 God bless great hunting this season
I appreciate it Paul! Glad you enjoyed it! Good luck to you!!!
Getting quiet is one of the most important things to learn elk hunting . I sit on dark trails and let them come to me in the morning as the others below drive them up at night I set up low elevation and in bad weather they come off the tops . Good luck
Yes it is! Thanks for watching!
Great Job. you worked hard and had a true straight arrow
Thank you!
I loved this video. Your little side commentaries are pretty much exactly like how I think. You did indeed get away with one. I do the same shit. I wish I had the discipline to not take anything but the highest percentage shots.
Thanks you Mr. Sockeye! I’m glad you enjoyed it so much and yes…there’s nothing further I can say in this comment section that I didn’t say in the video 😂 . Lots of emotions during that hunt.
Congratulations I love to see real hunters.
I appreciate it Ronnie!
Thanks for not edditting all the reality out of your videos. Plenty of that already everywhere. That was refreshing to watch and i understand the elation, regret, and self doubt. You know what you are capable of and i dont much believe in making decisions for other folks. Half the people bashing frontal shots, which im not a fan of, are the same ones launching arrows 80-100 yards. While it is easy enough to hit a target at that range, the targets hold a bit more motionless than the animals, in my experience. Great show! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Glenn. I’m glad you saw the experience I was trying to show for exactly what it is!
Awesome job
I appreciate it. Thank you!
Great series congratulations! thank you for sharing all the highs and lows that you experience Elk hunting. It sure is hard to keep a clear mind with a bull in bow range Lol, great job on the blood trail i learned a lot from watching.
I appreciate it thank you! Thanks for watching with an open mind! ;)
Awesome video man. Great bull, Great hunt, Great man. The real ones always reflect wanting to do better and grow from their experiences. Thats what life is all about. We are always hardest on ourselves. But from sumolboy looking in you have always been exceptionally ethical in all your videos. Keep up the good work brother. 👊💪🙏
I appreciate it. Thank you! Hard on myself, no doubt but felt that shot wasn’t “right” and I took it anyway.
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 We are only human..
U r very lucky to of recovered that bull. 40 yds broadside is a hard shot. Frontal is bad. U worked hard on ur hunt. Glad it turned out. Learn and grow. U were honest about the shot. Thats a start.
Yes I am
Thanks for keeping it real. I can relate to wanting an arrow back.
We all have, I just hope to not ever have that feeling again. If it’s a good shot, but I make a bad shot, I can live with that easier than launching a questionable one.
Great series! I’m too selfish to film our elk hunts because you do give some of the experience to the viewers. I appreciate you filming your hunts and I hope you continue doing it. It’s getting me pumped for September! Good luck this season
Thank you! I understand fully. Sometimes I wonder what I’m doing 😂
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 no I’m glad you are so don’t stop lol
Great video. I enjoyed the slow times mixed with the excitement of bulls bugling, that’s hunting.
Thank you Dave!
Congrats!! He looks awesome! Opening day for us is this coming up weekend in Colorado too.
Good luck!!
Good video man. I appreciate the honesty and introspective qualities, that’s what bow hunting elk is about. You try your best, and sometimes you’ll make mistakes according to your own personal ethics and you just try to learn from them and grow.
I watched one of your old antelope hunting videos where a guy was going after a group of antelope from 1.5 miles away. Pretty certain that was me lol but I was coming back to the road from a different stalk and happened to be looking at those goats when you came down the hill. 😂
Thank you for the kind words.
As for the antelope, that’s hilarious! I was sure there was some kind of reasoning that made more sense than what it seemed 😂
Congratulations, I think almost all bow hunters have had their moments of regret on a shot. It’s tough when it’s played back so many times in one’s mind. That’s why we practice tho and glad it worked out!
Thank you Shawn!
Been there as well got desperate shot a small bull frontal at far to far. Knew I should not have shot as soon as the moment was over. Ultimately he went 50yards and tipped over. It’s easy to let yourself get caught up in the moment. Good work. Almost time to do it again!
We’re getting close!! Thanks man.
Good work Trent. Make the Kifaru work!
Mission accomplished! 👊
Hey man, good hunt! Way to stick with the track job! You did a good job grinding it out!
Thank you! there were a few sections that didn’t have any blood but as soon as he would turn down hill again it would open back up. kept giving me hope!
I’ve done same thing it’s something you learn from for sure
That’s exactly right. Mistakes happen in hunting. Glad I got away with it
Great job Trent 👊🏻
Glad it ended well for you
Thanks man
Good bull. loving your vids
Thank you!
So solid....
I haven’t yet figured out what you’re talking about…
Epic video man, your content is unique, and original. Thanks for the upload!
Awesome thank you! I wasn’t sure if you were throwing shade at me or not 😂😂😂
Hahahaha, I can see how that was a bit unclear 😅 Keep up the good work bro.
That looks like so much fun.... and pain. If I was young and lived where there were Elk, I would definitely try to hunt them. As for now, Whitetail archery open up here next Monday. Wish me luck. Manitoba. Enjoy your videos.
Good luck Allan! I enjoy the cat and mouse with whitetails as well! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Congratulations man. Awesome hunt. I really enjoyed watching your hunts. I wish I had started video my hunts over the years. I understand why you shot. The opportunity of a Co bull on public land are few and far between.
I just didn’t need to shoot. I let all of the close calls talk me into thinking I could disregard the bull moving. that’s the main reason to not take longer frontal shots even if I felt I could hit the target.
Hard not to take those shots but glad you found him. Way to not give up! Filled the freezer with protein and learned a lesson as well. Where did the shot end up going in?
Basically that’s what it boils down to. Not taking those shots that are hard not to take. Basically high in the throat. Got his esophagus and an artery evidently.
As a retired photographer/videographer that hunts, it requires a camera person to get quality images. As u know now, GoPros are more for B-roll or very close encounters. Would be cool to have image stabilized binoculars that also recorded video and stills on the fly
Yes it does! It’s just extremely hard to do solo with the big cameras but up going to try harder to pull it off when I don’t have a buddy around.
U put in the steps on this hunt , sometimes that is what has to happen to be a successful hunt
About the only way I get “lucky” is lots of steps!
Very well done TW. Congrats on your success! Let this be a lesson to everyone watching…CO is the only state in the west with elk in it 😁.
Bruh, everyone knows Colorado gives away way too many tags to non residents already. We don’t need any help.
Yep! everyone head there!!! Thanks SW. I appreciate it!
@@opigonbad1 Bruh, the tag quotas are set. This was a limited quota hunt. I don’t have the ability for Colorado to give out more tags for limited quota units than they already do. The unit was never mentioned in any of the videos. Those that can figure out where I was likely know what the elk hunting is like there anyways.
Low percentage shot for your typical archery hunter, but you clearly are not the typical archery hunter. You can be proud of executing a tough shot I am sure it was not just luck, maybe you take it next time maybe you don’t congrats on a great hunt !
Thanks…I think…
Nice job +
Thank you!
Trent you need a HECS suit and the squirrels won’t bust you.
I don’t think HECS makes me invisible ;) . I’ve never believed in it
Awesome series my friend! Thank you for keeping it honest and real. It is one of the things that sets you apart. Is it September yet?!
Thanks pal. It’s sure getting close! Out looming for an antelope right now so it’s not all bad!
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 sweet! Tear it up!
Could definitely see the other truck; I know your pain! Have the same issue in MT and ID...
I have plenty of these problems everywhere I go. I just don’t understand it…
Most of the hater’s that comment negatively are the same people who don’t practice shooting, can only hit something at 20 yards or less and constantly either never recover an animal and just wound every animal out there
That’s probably true too!
Great commentary and honesty. How many yards do you consider to be the bubble you try to get inside before challenging the bull?
I appreciate it Tom! Thank you!
Just out of site is the very best. That varies with terrain but in “normal” thick timber that’s usually about 80 yards. if you watch the “healing heartache” episode, I challenged a bull we could see from about 150 yards and it worked. There are no set rules as to when they’re going to come but “as close as possible” is the best answer.
Ur camera man gets a little excited, u can hear it in his voice and his breathing 😊
Congrats- I lost a bull 2 years ago in CO after burying an arrow to the nock on a frontal- completely lost all blood after a 1/3rd of a mile- 4 of us spent 2 days gridding and searching- never found him...Still bothers me to this day- I know he died.
Yea that’s a tough one to swallow. It’s just flat out amazing how tough an elk is!
Awesome hunt just found your channel love it. What is the go pro mount you have on your shoulder?
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying the videos! Honestly, I have no idea what it is. It was an off brand Amazon purchase
Incredible series. You and your wife remind me a lot of my wife and me. We bow hunt together also. What did your arrow end up getting into that brought him down?
Thank you Jason. I’m glad you enjoyed it! he basically ducked it straight down, so I hit him high in the throat. Flight path would’ve been just under the nose.
Hope that limping cow at 11:40 isn't from Hoof Rot.
No clue 🤷♂️
You shoot at the top part or lower part of the neck
Look up “elk bone structure” and it will
Show you where you’re supposed to hit.
That knob you have on your shoulder to keep the bugle tube string off your neck - is there a name for that thing? Thank you!
It’s called “the frankenstud sling keeper” if you Google that you’ll find the site!
Well said. 😉
Thank you
Been there, wanting to take that arrow back. Good job keeping at it and finding him. Just curious, where did you hit then?
Hit him basically high in the throat. Got the esophagus and evidently an artery.
What is that spool you have on your shoulder that your bugle tube string slides around? I always hate when the string binds up on your neck.
It’s called the “frankenstud sling keeper” it’s for the sling of your rifle but works great for this aspect! Just Google that and you’ll find it!
Congratulations… what pants and shirt did you go with in your hunt
Thank you Lance. I almost always have on kuiu attack pants and a black ovis merino wool shirt.
❤
As they say, that’s hunting. Where did your arrow end up hitting?
Basically high in the throat. Arrow impact would’ve been right under his nose. Cut his esophagus and evidently an artery.
Dude I need to learn everything you can teach. Do you move camp constantly or is the tent at a stationary spot. So many questions! Congratulations great hunt.
Hey thank you! glad you are getting something out of it! I’ll try to incorporate those kinds of things in future videos without getting too boring. I will move camo but didn’t this time as it was nicely centrally located and I killed that bull from hearing him from camp. I brought the backpacking tent to the other side of the mountain a couple times but didn’t stay over there. Feel free to message me on Facebook or Instagram with any questions you have!
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 thanks man I appreciate it.
what is that knob on your right shoulder? it looks like it would stop that dang elastic burn on your neck each time you use your tube!
It’s called the “frankenstud sling keeper”. it’s for a rifle slung, but yep it doe the job for a bugle tube nicely!
@@TrentWilliamsOutdoors1 Awesome! Thank you, Great vid showing the emotional roller coaster that is Bowhunting!
@@andrewcox5704 Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Ok where did you get the thingamajig that you wrap your bugle tube string around that’s on your pack? I searched for it for about 30 min the other night but I don’t know what it’s called.
It’s called the “Frankenstud Sling Keeper”. If you Google that, you’ll find the website. It’s for a rifle sling, but works great for keeping the bugle tube string from digging into your neck as well, as you saw!

How many pref points for that? Trying to juggle how many to save up for
I burned 10 and I think it took 1 or 2 less but it creeps at least .5 points per year.
What is your opinion on early season or later season. Do you think they were bugling more during late season? I'm heading out next year with a few buddies. And want sure if late season would be better? Thanks
If you’re talking later or earlier in September then yes later was better. The woods were rocking basically as the muzzle loader hunt was ending.

Honestly, WE ALL HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS, but we all take shots we know we can take, yes frontal isn’t my first choice but, I will take it, if I have a good angle…. Regardless of what others say, my theory is they are on their couch watching , they aren’t out there with us and don’t know the situation or that we are good ethical hunters, they are just haters… nice bull good job, and if you ever need another Wyoming bowhunter to help you pack one out pm me
Yes we do. It’s tough to decipher that in the field! Thank you for watching and take the time to comment!

It makes it much more enjoyable for sure!
You can thank some of the more well known elk hunters on RUclips for popularizing frontal shots on elk which should not be done. Shooting a frontal shot on a elk at 40 yards is shameful.
You don’t say… I don’t think it’s their fault. it’s mine.
If you had hiked in… why did you hear a truck start, and doors slamming?
And how in the heck did you get a set up like the tent, cot and stove all the way up there if it wasn’t trucked in?
Can we believe anything? Are you a road hunter?
Yes. Proud road hunter here!
Oh boy, a bit naive are we Kirk? Watch the video again bud.
@@gnix20and again….and again and again!
A frontal shot is a very deadly shot if u can execute I would have shot to don't know why u beat yourself up about it.. it's very deadly. If your not a good shot then I understand but if u are then don't pass it up. Congratulations
Correct it is and I’ve executed it perfectly a few times. The problem is the distance. The elk comes in alert and had jumped long before the arrow got there, which is why frontal shots should only be taken at close range where the animal won’t jump the string.
