I personally would leave the piercing job. It's costing you money you're not making back, it's bringing you down and affecting your mental health. Stay at the bar job definitely, because it sounds like it's doing you the world of good actually, sounds like you're finally dealing with decent people 💚 look after yourself and shake off what drags you down x

1 you do not have to apologize for rambling or venting in your own video. we’re watching for you! you’re human and we all feel this so it’s nice to relate to. 2 you have piercing experience it hasn’t gone away so in the future if you wanna do it again then you can! it’s never never too late. but if the issue is you’re just not getting paid what you should and it’s draining do the job that makes you happy. life is absolutely too short to do a job that drains you. your goal in life should be happiness as well as surviving (so money). if you have enjoy your job and pay your bills you’re set. you can always go back into your career later. maybe there will be more and better opportunities. don’t fall for sunk cost fallacy

My tattooists wife is a piercer, she's also a dentists assistant. She works Mon-Fri at the dentist and Saturday's at the studio doing body piercing. Everyone knows that's when she'll be there.
I'd say cut your hours at the studio, Make it clear that you are there at certain times and days and that you can ONLY be reached on those days. Don't read anything from clients except on those days

Straigheners and any direct heat DOES fade hair colour!! Such harsh heat coming into contact with the cuticle will draw the colour out. This can actually happens even more aggresively on freshly dyed/bleached hair where the porosity is increased... it's honestly just like washing your hair in too warm of water! So you aren't crazy, it's just science 😫
Either way, you look EPIC, your style is so powerful 💚

yes I have seen this on my own hair! I dye my hair from blonde to black. during a certain stage of growing out my bangs I heat styled them bc I hated how they sat naturally and my bangs faded way more quickly than the rest of my hair because of the heat, you could really see the blonde starting to peek through.

If taking a break from the piercing makes you feel that good, then I think that's all you need to know. You're qualified so you can always go back into it, but it's obviously not serving you right now. Happy 2023! This is the year we all get better!

I've been in the same situation. I would stop the piercing job, personally. You seem so much happier with the bar job. Sure, it's something that you want to do for a career, but sometimes we need to step away from our "dream job" to figure out if we really WANT that "dream job". Much love Emily

Hey Emily, I've been depressed and stressed out too. I lost my left leg below the knee recently so my emotions are all over the place. I've been sober for a year off of H, an Army Veteran, and now an amputee. I was thinking about trying to do RUclips but honestly I don't know if anyone would watch it. U should take a break from the piercings studio for a while bcuz it doesn't seem to be making u happy. Your hair looks great!

She's now working in care again and SO much happier. Maybe just take a few months away from the studio and see how you feel then. You've got to be happy or it's just not worth it.

I totally get how money is such a struggle at the moment. Would you be able to take an extended break from the piercing job? As in 3/6 months then reassess the situation and think about whether you miss doing it or if your mental health is doing better. There's nothing stopping you picking it up again - hopefully if there's some end in sight to the cost of living crisis! At this moment in time, I definitely think it makes more sense to stay in the more financially rewarding place and it's a bonus that the people are nice there.

I used to be a tattoo apprentice - it was long hours and lots of work to do as well as the training side of stuff, as I'm sure you know. I loved it; it's always going to be a passion of mine, but I couldn't afford to keep at it and left for a sh!tty job with a wage. 8 years later, I finally have a paying job I actually enjoy, but reflectively, I absolutely think I made the right choice for me, even with the miserable jobs I've had. Financial security relieves so much stress and it's not like I lost the skills, so maybe I can revisit one day if I choose to; I think the same may apply to you.
If I were in your shoes, I'd keep the bar job which you enjoy and which pays. Leaving the piercing for now doesn't mean it's forever. x

I understand what it’s like having people not respect your boundaries. I have people message me at all hours , cancel last min.
I’ve been doing what I do now for 2 years ? And I can finally see things starting to grow.
Going to take a while to get to where I can drop my part time job but will get there.
But in regards to your situation go with your gut , maybe take a break or set strong policies and stick to them in regards to the piercing job.

Give urself a break babes!! Ur allowed to not find the piercing studio working for u completely. Plus any1 talking about what u earn n trying to judge u in any way is not on! U might share a lot but doesn’t mean they have right to quiz u on stuff.
When u split ur hair up can’t u stick some bacofoil on say the black bits while u bleach? (I did this a wee bit when my girl wanted multicoloured n seemed to work ok).
Think hormones r evil! Pcos effects hormones? Im sure some vitamins n minerals could help.
Try let things go , especially old stuff. Put a big red STOP sign in ur mind when u notice if u can. I needed this n helped a lot. Last thing to annoy u with is try to cut out calling urself names like calling urself stupid or ugly etc. It does a number on ur head. Cutting it out helped me not feel so overwhelmed. Before stopping this it was like ‘every1’ bombarding me with negativity. After I realised it was mainly me telling me bad sh*t that my brain was believing because it was me telling it!! Anyway hope it helps…
    Luv the Boo xx 💜💜🦇

You shouldn’t apologise for ‘rambling’ - we are here with you through the good and bad. I would personally quit the piercing job as it’s getting you down and you’re not seeing the desired profit. I was a makeup artist for like 6/7 years and ended up quitting even though I was so passionate about it because of similar reasons to you - lack of money, cost to keep going and ridiculous messages at all hours of the day with the ???? messages if I didn’t reply within like 5 seconds. It might be sucky as I know you enjoy piercing but in the long run it’ll be beneficial. Happy new year xxx

Sorry I'm late to the party, I only really get to watch youtube on the weekends.
Firstly, if you are taking a holiday from work it is so important to *actually* take the holiday. Put an auto-message on that will reply to people letting them know when you're back and if they feel they have a medical emergency to do with their piercing, they need to call NHS 111. People need to realise that you're not their piercing slave at their beck and call.
Also, have you considered turning the piercing thing into pre-booked appointment only? That way you can just book people back to back on specific dates, so you won't be wasting time sat in the studio.
I don't think theres a need to 100% give it up, but obv you need to do the jobs that willpay your bills.
It's ace you've found a place thats actually good to you. Spoons is evil tbh.
    Massive love

As someone who has been working in the “modification industry” in Ireland as a tattoo apprentice/artist after a year of working six days a week in the shop from between eight and ten hours a day depending on the time of year and then one day a week working on my art to sell I can say that I would never choose any other path in life.. In total I work about 70hours a week and I earn pennies only from my art and I live across the world from my family with no support from them due to my lifestyle, I live with my partner in a tiny apartment in a very expensive city and in the beginning I wanted to quit so many times because it was so hard and I was broke for three years to the point where I couldn’t pay anything so I didn’t have electricity nor hot water nor food in the fridge for weeks at a time and then I realised that it’s the life I had chosen and the job made me happy even tho it is really draining and talking to other artists in my shop I realised that if you want to work in that kind of industry you have to dedicate your whole life to it and one day it will start paying off. It’s a really hard road especially because customers see you as a 24/7 drugstore always at their disposal piling on top of mental health but as I said for me it’s the only life I can see myself living… life is too short not to be your best self but sometimes it might not be the right time to follow your path so do take into consideration that a job in the modification industry can always wait for you because people will always be looking for modifications… hope you find a solution that makes your soul happy. Love your content ❤

There’s such a huge difference in how you talk about the piercing job and the bar job. Your face lights up talking about the bar and you look happy! But I can see the stress in your expressions when you talked about the piercing job. I’d say stay with the bar. You can always come back to piercing later when you’re in a better position.
Either way take care and try to make time for YOU!! ❤

Imo either leave the piercing job for a while or see if it would be possible to do it at a closer/bigger studio where it's worth it for you to keep at it. It's not only a matter of what brings money, but also keeping your mental health and having time to rest. If you can pay your bills and credit debts just with YT and the bar and have more free time on top of it, 100% go for it!

I actually think straightening you're hair does dull the colour as your opening up the hair cuticle with high heat which leads to the colour deposit fading. BTW I'm no hairdresser, I remember reading it somewhere lol. I have the exact problem with Black hair dye, it turns brownish after a week! Pain in the ring!

I want to take a break from school but I also know I'm almost at the finish line. If I take time off, I can work on my passions and return later. It's so confusing and frustrating. Life's funny sometimes. If I had a job that I always wanted to do & loved it, but maybe wasn't overly happy with it at the minute, I might give myself a month/time that I'd say to myself "look, if I still feel overwhelmed and stressed by this date/time, I need to either work out a different type of schedule or leave." If I found myself not enjoying any job, I would try to leave & move on to the next thing as soon as possible. I've always thought happiness is one of the most important things at a job, but bills and putting food on the table are important too.

You're definitely doing the right thing leaving the piercing job. It seems to cause more stress than good right now and you can always go back as you said and go back anywhere. Maybe to a busier studio where your get more clients so more money. 😊
So you find Electric Lizard works/lasts better for you than Lunar Tides? You do look cute with the sides grown back and I can totally relate to the thin hair thing. My whole sides are shaved off and almost half the back too due to having my head tattooed and the top is really short so I've got a mega mullet right now. I can't stand hair on the sides of my face though so don't think I could deal. I can wear wigs on the side of my face but only because I can take them off. Do you ever put dry shampoo in? I use that on my roots to give mine more volume. The styling paste type. The spray tends to make my scalp itch.
Happy New Year to you, Been and Emily 💚💚💚

I can't say too much about my experiences working for free for a career, but all I can say is that eventually those kinds of gigs can become extremely debasing. I didn't have much confidence to begin with, but I will second the comment about being able to pay off debt it's great to just live a life. I gave it up because it started to become horribly damaging. Sometimes what we think we want, is really just the idea of it and not actually what we're having.

Personally i would keep the bar job for now to pay off ur debt and save up for future endeavours(like perhaps a piercing place). You can always come back to piercing. Also could try setting firm expectations/boundaries like only doing piercings on a Saturday and only being available via messagener on Saturdays.

i'd leave the piercing job. i mean you could always....go back? like maybe not to that studio, but you could choose to apply for a job at another studio after some time. you're not on a time limit! and if that's the job that's both stressing you out the most and paying the least, it seems like a pretty clear-cut choice.

  • @starrywizdom

Is there any way you can dial back your piercing gig to one day a week? Letting it go entirely would be sad, but it doesn't seem to be working for you right now...
Heat actually can make the outside of each hair shaft less shiny/more dull, which doesn't affect the colour of the dye on the hair but could well affect the way the dye LOOKS on the hair, if that makes any sense. Think about how much brighter & "neon" looking green pvc is than green twill of the exact same shade.
You might consider keeping the hair in the spots you like to shave between 1-2 cm long. Short hair underneath long hair does make the long hair poof out & look thicker!

I would take a break from the piercing, yes it’s a career but is it worth your mental health. Is there a pattern to piercing ie summer time more people want piercings, if so is it something you can do seasonally? As someone who left a really well paid job for mental health, I’ve never been happier, it’s not been a total fix but I have definitely noticed a difference. 🖤🖤🖤🖤

Ugh ok, pausing the video. Emily I wish I could give you advice on this. You’re probably much older than me so I feel like I couldn’t adequately give you advice anyways. But I’m glad you talked about this because I feel that I’m in a similar crossroads with my jobs and career too.
But anyways, I would say maybe to take a break with the tattoo shop. You have learned the skill and been piercing for at least a year now. If you put this on pause, it doesn’t mean you have to stop piercing forever. The bar job is good because it makes money. Costs are rising everywhere. It makes more sense to keep the job that makes you more money. Also, you are lucky that you have an online platform already. You aren’t going to just become irrelevant if you step away from the studio like others without followings. So I think if you step away from piercing for the time and focus on paying back some of your debt, you may be able to recoup at a later time with your piercing career. I know you worked really hard to become a piercer, but you’ll always be a piercer if you know the skill and the trade.

I would LOVE to see the uncut version of the vertical labret piercing process!! I'm considering getting one myself, so it would be educational haha.
When it comes to the job question, I'd say give the bar job a lil bit longer and see if you still like it, cause new jobs always have an excitement (at least for me haha). If you really WANT to be a professional piercer, I'd say give it some more time, but if your fav job/"dream" job is being a RUclipsr, than quit the piercing job so you can give yourself time for health and rest. Don't put your mental or physical health at risk for a job that doesn't give you the support you need.
    Proud of you, Boo
